Finishing Basement #19: DIY Stair Railing | Farmhouse Iron Baluster & Newel Post Installation

- In this video we build our stair railing for the basement. We chose to go with a horizontal iron baluster design with a walnut wood newel post. This video includes a step by step tutorial on how to build this basement stair railing. It was pretty easy to build and turned out amazing! It was free for us to build because the walnut post and board was harvested from a tree on our farm that we cut up on our sawmill. The 5/8in steel rods that we used for the balusters were left over from our farmhouse build. We purchased the steel rods from our local metal fabricating company for super cheap! Shop local when doing home renovations and DIY projects because it's way cheaper and you can often get remnants or leftover stuff for almost free (an you're supporting a small and local business!) Let us know if you have any questions about this farmhouse basement iron baluster and newel post project for our basement stair railing/handrail. Thanks!

You guys are such a great team!!
+BRAiNStORM CHALLENGES THANK YOU! But don’t give us too much credit. We certainly aren’t perfect, but we do work well together:)
Beautiful!
+ED Seventyeight THANK YOU! :)
Definitely a good choice using walnut
We couldn't agree more! We absolutely love walnut! We also love that this wood was free because we cut down a walnut tree on our farm and cut it up on the sawmill last year.
I absolutely love what I saw in the picture you showed on the up stairs!!! and I just read bout where you bought the steel rods. I hope I can find here locally the same kind of rods!
+Simona Buna Thanks! We love it too. My husband did a great job building our banisters and handrails with the steel rods. It’s so cheap to do and really looks amazing! I hope you find some too and make it! :)
Another great job!!
+Rusty Young Thank you! I’m obsessed with how this one turned out:)
@@CollinsCountry that's what it's all about! As always, super proud of you guys!!! Keep up the awesome work. Make a great team!
+Rusty Young You’re too nice. Thanks!!!!
Great work, how did you connect the handrail to the Newell? What size screw? And is there a reason why you did not use fasteners?
Were the measurements for the rods the same distance on each newel?
This is beautiful! However I don’t think it would pass inspection. I don’t know where you guys live, but here in pa I tried doing horizontal rails and It wasn’t to code because they are “clombable”
Sorry to hear that. My inspectors main concern was that the horizontal bars are close enough together that a child couldn’t get there head stuck. I will say my inspector was east going. More so than I expected any way.
