DIY Stair Railing Makeover Baluster and Newel Post Revamp

  • This DIY stair railing makeover project is a beautiful, modern remodel of our outdated stair railing baluster and newel post. I designed this stair railing using metal as well as wood in a horizontal orientation for a contemporary look.
I chose steel conduit as my metal because I could cut it with an angle grinder to my desired length, measuring about 1/4″ less than needed so I could wiggle it into place.
For the wood newel post, I bought 1/4″ thick MDF and used a brad nailer to attach it to the existing post. I couldn’t access the newel post through the basement ceiling, so I just built off what was already there and I knew was stable. I bought the topper and bottom skirt as pre-made pieces. They were originally meant for outdoor decks, but I didn’t see why I couldn’t have them indoors. Building my own newel post with parts instead of buying a pre-made one saved me more than $100.
For complete materials list, cost, and more information, visit my blog www.welcome-to-...
Enjoy my stair baluster transformation, step by step!

If she verifies her plans meet local code before she begins all is good. Her home, sure, but when they hit it big on RUclips they will be selling, realtor then has to sell a compliant home.

I love that you went through six wardrobe changes. Kind of puts DIY projects into perspective; never have I ever started a project and finished it the same day... although usually my clothes don't change or are even washed between stops and starts:)

Yes exactly! I actually did do this whole project in a week, but it was lots of wardrobe changes. I'm sure at least one of those wasn't because it was a different day, but because of baby spit up lol

This looks so nice, I adore this look. Plus you did a killer job on the work I respect! It is unfortunate as others have said, against building code because of climbing dangers. The design idea has been removed from production because of it. Sucks because it looks so good. I was just flipping through a design text an hour ago and they had some modern 80's designs with horizontals like this, they do look good and I bemoaned the fact we can't use them anymore.

It looks great and I love the modern look of horizontal balusters - but unfortunately some of the other comments are correct. For anyone else looking in and thinking about doing a similar DIY - just be aware that this is against code in most states before you go forward. If you have any future plans about putting the home on the market, you'll never be able to resell with that up.
