  • On a desolate Norfolk beach Clint Mansell's excellent GHOSTS has an uncanny encounter with the great 1968 TV adaptation of M.R. James's WHISTLE AND I'LL COME TO YOU.
The music is Mansell's own vocal version of a track he wrote for the film Requiem For A Dream.

The singer is Clint Mansell, the song is from the Requiem for a Dream Remix album.

And I agree with you Calico. This is my favourite version of the song. There's something precious and earnest about the lyrics. I remember hearing this during a very difficult time in my life. It reduced me to tears. As the sun came up at around 5 in the morning, I was in total breakdown mode, tears, sobbing, the works. now, I can hardly even imagine feeling that way again. This song always brings me a great deal of comfort after that. It feels human and raw.

I disagree. I think the singing adds a poetic value to the song, which fits the entire concept.

I disagree. There is vulnerability in his voice which perfectly matches the tone of the song, Plus here we hear a certain amount of sensitivity in the vocals and lyrics which was never displayed during his time with PWEI.

It works in the movie.. it is in Requiem of a Dream, right?
well, I think this type of music loses its power when it is removed from the movie.
I don't like the vocals.. It sounds like a nervous guy at a kareokee-bar.

This would have been great without the singing but is great with it as well.

can you tell? can you see? // I don't believe in me anymore // pull me from the wreckage // of a life grown more pathetic // even I can see the message:
time to treat yourself more precious // shine a light into the darkness // put some life into the deadness // where there used to be the ?head nest? // now it's just a fucking mess.

It's spelled "Ich bin ein Ausländer"... but it's ok. You don't even have "Umlaute" (an a, o or u with two dots above it) to spell it right ;)
