I assume two things: you sell as much as possible to help defray costs for your customer and you have at least an idea of what an hour of your time is worth. Research the realistic value for the things you can sell. By now you have a reasonable idea of how much time things will take. If the extra time it takes to remove it carefully gets eaten away by your labor… hack away guilt free.
I love the idea behind this build. There's a ton of large 4x4 suv's out there that are in decent shape but getting bad fuel economy that could be converted. There's also no pure electric's being sold that are comparable.
On the EV charger, I would have mentioned to the folks on the gauge wire that's used because of the 30 foot length. Longer length cables require heavier gauge wires because of the amperage/voltage loss.
I wish I could do a build like this. I would keep the transfer case, mount the electric motor where the transmission was, and place the battery bank where the engine was. Keeps the offroad, low range, and all wheel drive features depending on which TC you have. Cool build, excited to see it through
My opinion, if someone is going to complete a motor swap or fuel tank swap, they will buy new rubber hoses or use theirs. I would cut lower coolant hose at lowest point to drain. Fuel tank filler hose, it would be damaged too. To increase pay per hour. I believe it has to be done. Rubber hoses are consumable items. They age and brake.
This was the project I was looking forward to seeing. Amazing to see how much stuff was in there and so many gasket failure points... Glad you got that impact wrench! Thanks for showing us this next project!
Don’t beat yourself up too much. I’m a professional mechanic going in about 6 years, and I’ve learned some stuff, but one thing that always helps is taking a step back or just working on another part of the car like you did the with exhaust. You’re doing great from the standpoint of just starting on your automotive repair/conversion career. Just remember that we hate the engineers just as much as you will soon 😂
Don't bring your ICE vehicle to this guy to repair it, expecting it to still run on dinosaur juice! He only knows, how to strip them to pieces and replace all dinosaur juice to speed converter parts with lightning to speed converter parts. :D
You might want to watch channels like Fab Rats or Robby Layton or Colt Builds It. They routinely swap out one existing gas engine for a different kind of gas engine. including all the gas tanks, exhaust and front and rear suspension. But, my point is that they do it without taking everything apart like you do. Might learn how to save yourself a lot of time getting rid of the gas stuff.
I get the feeling that there are slack times in any build, waiting for parts or send cut send products. It might make sense to have more than one on the go at once.
@@NeptuneSega i was being sarcastic, cause he was still working on the 300zx and now a jeep lol. Wouldn't it be better to finish the 300z before starting on another project? it must be one of those where a customer drops a stack of cash to get started on their car and put others on the back burner etc.
How about waiting for parts. So while the Z sits idle, a smart businessman would not waste time and works on what can be done now. Plus we get a new video on a different vehicle to nitpick on his work. Right?
Chrysler loves using those nut retainers on the exhaust and they're a good idea until the car has a couple miles on it and the retainer rusts out. Then you're hosed trying to get a wrench on a square nut in a location you cant reach while trying to also pull the bolt. I end up cutting at least one bolt with the torch almost every time i pull exhaust on a Mopar. So annoying. LOL You would think that after 150 years or so of automobiles someone would come up with a coolant drain that didn't spray coolant everywhere except your drain pan but no. Sometimes I use a hose on the little nipple by the plug which keeps it from spraying but it takes forever to drain so you have to remember to do it first thing so it drains while your doing other work. I would like it they put a drain plug on the lowest part of the system so it would drain the block as well as the radiatior.
Looks like the pinion seal is bad and slinging rear axle grease over on the gas tank... Great video! It's a good thing you are getting rid of the rear axle!
I know exactly what you mean about the impact wrench. I was wondering when you’d get one. The best electrical tool I’ve ever bought for mechanical work. I even take it on road trips if I have to change out a tyre (plus the torque wrench of course) . So much easier!
I was already super excited for the Nissan build but now I’m really super excited for the jeep build. This is going to be awesome. Keep up the great work bro. Maybe one of these days you could do it old school, Chevy caprice, classic conversion have always wanted to see that and I don’t think anybody’s ever done that the 90s box style.
I really admire your patience when facing such a grueling task! What do you do with the parts you removed that are in good shape? Is there a second hand market for those? Cheers
engine, transmission, transfer case should be an easy sell if they're in good shape (and he has a video showing them working right before he removed them) gas tank may also sell but could take a bit of time. exhaust is almost always scrap unless you find someone desperate. drive shafts I'm not sure if they'll sell
i have that exact jeep. 13.5 mpg, clips all break like crazy any time I work on anything. Done the starter twice, it is an absolute nightmare to get out of there. I had to take the starter apart to get it in and out of the hole. Tesla convesion for the win
I thought you might make a temporary jig to locate the transfer case in the chassis so that you can put it back with Tesla motor ( and reduction gears?) attached later in the same place.
Great start to the build Jeremy. For removing the exhaust, a Sawzall is fast, maneuverable, and reasonably priced, as well as being versatile and much faster than a Dremel style cutter. I am sure you are aware that catalytic converters are quite valuable, both as parts and salvage, being between $75-$500 for the latter. Are you reusing the transfer case, or going with a pair of drive motors and switching from 2- to 4-wheel drive that way? Curious how this one is going to be achieved. Looking forward to more on this build, as my friend has 2 Jeep Cherokees, and this may be a viable option for converting over.
Love all your builds man! But you gotta start valuing your time more and cutting through things like hoses, exhaust, and unnecessary wire harnesses. If it won't be used after you electrify the vehicle, then it's of no value to you in your work, and ultimately of no value to your customer either. Your customers need to understand that the service you offer is making their vehicle run on electricity; not scrimping and scrapping every part to recoup costs. The time you spend being so gentle comes at the opportunity you have to get other things that could actually make you money. I want to see you be successful at this!
Question, on the Nissan you are working on do you like the AEM system or do you like how you have done other cars where you have picked what you want to use to make a EV conversion? Thanks ahead.
So much of it depends on the goals of the conversion. AEM only can control the large drive unit. So, if you want dual motors, you have to go elsewhere.
unless you are selling the engine with the harness its faster to just go in and cut everything connected to the engine, you only need to take the care you do on parts you are keeping.
The conversation from ICE to EV is cool, but if it's a true EV conversion don't waste the time just use a Sawzall. I don't think there is a line of old Jeep owners waiting for used rusty parts.
I am currently in possession of a modified Tesla performance large drive unit from Stealth EV and I'm looking to sell it for much below retail and I'm not sure how else to contact you. Please let me know if you are interested and, if so, how best to contact you. Thanks.
You need to find a mechanic that will take off all the ICE components and will be paid by selling them (or some percentage of selling the parts) - win-win for you m, the mechanic and your customer (who will need to pay less for your time)…
@@ElectricSuperCar there are about a dime a dozen channels working on ICE vehicles. Your channel is special. With the time (and money) get more projects and focus on the EV side. If it actually allows you to lower the price of conversion (since you need to spend less time), assuming owner is ok with your mechanic companion selling the parts for labor, it would likely increase the number of projects you can get (lower price, more demand). 🥳

There are a couple of plugs on either side of the block under the exhaust manifolds that you can use to drain more coolant.
