  • Why didn't Cut Lawquane's chip activate during Order 66? How do the chips work, and is it possible for a clone to overcome the chip's programming on their own? That's what we're exploring today!

    The very fact that Cut was independent enough to desert in the first place may be a sign that his chip was simply defective to start with.

    • @Daniel_Paterson
      @Daniel_Paterson 3 года назад +65

      That's exactly what I have been saying for a while, his desertion was probably only possible because the chip was inactive/malfunctioned, allowing Cut to express atypical behaviour in comparison to the rest of the clones. It would also make sense considering his distaste for the Empire, something that the inhibitor chips also wouldn't allow.

      @@Daniel_Paterson The Umbaran arc shows that regular clones are capable of independence and a refusal to carry out orders.

      @@nathandts3401 arent the Umbara clones generally trained for independance though? From what I think now seems to be the case, is that the order 66 protocol enhances a clones will to follow orders, more in line with how crosshair was affected. Biggest problem however is that Jesse has shown a lot of independence in for example the Umbara arc, while he was still immediately affected by his chip. What I feel like the Bad Batch series is trying to establish that the chips are more in line with extra safeguaring for following orders, ala what the kaminoans said, instead of making it a purely jedi killing device, more in line with loyalty in clones and how legends tackled the order 66 scenario.

    In the Vader Comic on Mon Cala when Vader and the Inquisitors were hunting down Jedi, Ferren Barr activated the chips in Vader’s purge troopers who were from one of the last batches of clones, this causes them to turn on Inquisitors and Barr alike, this would suggest that the command is required for it to activate. However, this is all from a comic and they could retcon or change that if they want

    I think Cut Lawquane's chip was inactive from before Geonosis, which allowed him to desert the Republic. This would also explain his distasteful feelings towards the Republic, Clone Wars, and Galactic Empire seeing as Order 66 wasn't the only purpose of the chip, but to also ensure loyalty to Palpatine and the Sith.

    Tangentially related thought I have always had: The command "Execute Order 66" is not telling the Troopers to kill the Jedi. Order 66 is itself the flipping of the switch on their chips, and it's that switch is what tells them to kill the Jedi (and also to completely shift their loyalties from the Republic to the Empire). Order 66 is "activate the chip" not "kill the Jedi".

      Well that's technically not true. The clones have a ton of different orders that are basically protocols. Order 66 is in case the Jedi turn on the rebpublic, and order 67(I believe) is in case the chancellor does the same. Of course, I don't think order 67 has anything to do with the chips, but still, their are I the order. Hell, in legends, their was order 37, which was super fucked up. Basically the execution of civilians to draw out a target.

    It was interesting to me that with the exception of Crosshair, most of the Bad Batch had no idea what Order 66 even was. This seems to tell us that the entire mission profile of the assignment was stored in the chips. None of the clones were ever briefed on Order 66 or had it explained to them why such a contingency may be necessary. Attack of the Clones shows a Kaminoan explaining to Obi Wan that the Clones were conditioned to never disobey orders, but clearly, it goes deeper than that; the chips could potentially be used to send Clones any kind of information or intel.

    • @meganofsherwood3665
      @meganofsherwood3665 3 года назад +1

      Agreed! It was amusing to see Hunter & Co trying to figure out what "Order 66" meant, but I think you're right - the fact they didn't instantly know suggests the mission information was also encoded in the chip.
      I seem to remember, either from a Wookiepedia article or from one of the Lost Missions, where they had Fives (or was it Tupp? Somebody help me out) refering to it as "The voice in our nightmares" - nightmares of betraying and murdering those they had fought beside for so long. That would suggest they were aware of the order, but only on a deep, subconscious level

    To your "Flip a switch" hypothesis: it wouldn't make a substantial enough difference.
    1-The signal would be broadcast on the same communications network otherwise they would have to create a new network specifically for that signal.
    2-Needing Palpatine's voice for the command give him total control over the Clone command structure. If the Kaminoans could flip the switch that would be a critical area of control out of Palpatine's reach and he would not allow that.
    3-All clones active in the GAR have constant access to the communications network and can be reached at anytime. Those that don't are presumably deserters and are of no use to Palpatine anyway.
    It is both more practical and gives Palpatine greater control if he were to just send his signal on repeat over the GAR communications network to activate the chips as seen on The Bad Batch.

    I don't know about Cut, but I always assumed that Wolfe and Gregor's chips were both damaged as a result of traumatic head injuries. It's true that Palpatine didn't contact each Clone Commander individually and give the order. From what I understand, after he contacted Commander Cody first and gave the order (Palpatine specifically wanted Obi-Wan taken off the board first), Palpatine basically recorded the part of the transmission where he says "Execute Order 66." and sent the recording out to the rest of the Clones Commanders simultaneously.
    The order then likely gets repeated through the Clones' comms ensuring that every Clone hears the command in the Palpatine's voice.

    I think the chip only triggers when receiving the order from a higher rank figure. So through comlink would be the local commanders broadcasting the order.
    Commanders themselves received the order from Palpatine, maybe from other admirals working under him (like Tarkin etc).
    Since Cut is a deserter, and he doesn't follow hierarchy anymore, maybe it cannot active at all (though unlikely if he received it from palpatine himself since he's likely added as the supreme authority figure in the chip) or at least resist it.
    In the Darth Vader comic we had seen a jedi use the mind trick on clones to trigger Order 66 by making them briefly think he was Palpatine giving the order, and it worked.

    I’ve always assumed that as soon as a clone commander hears “Execute Order 66” in Palps’s voice the inhibitor chip in his head will send out a single to all other clone chips within a radius and the radius moves with the commander as a way of making sure all clones fall under the order. So when Commander Neyo got the order Cut was too far away and the signal never reached him.

    It could depend on what the chips actually do. The shows have been hinting that maybe Order 66 isn’t the only thing they do since they were introduced, and even in the case of Fives we see how he’s a little more aggressive even than he was before it was removed. Nala Se even says as much, how it’s designed to make them less aggressive, which could actually not be a total lie-it’s just not all they do.
    The chips could just be what help the clones be such disciplined soldiers in the first place, and Order 66 is simply a dormant command that causes it to go into overdrive.

      Palpatine sends out the order to the commanders and it gets broadcasted among Clone comms to trigger everyone else. We see this happening to the Clones around Rex in the final Clone Wars episodes. We hear Wrecker and Tech say as much in the 1st episode of Bad Batch.

Ahsoka had to knock him out and perform surgery on him before he stopped trying to kill her. Most Clones are going to fall into this catagory. They might be able to break free but not immediately nor easily.
    Cut was for all intents and purposes a defective clone, I don't think his chip works at all, despite the Kaminoans best efforts he did not take to the indoctrination. There might be others like him but not many.
    Echo is literally brain damaged, the mind machine interface the Techno Union turn him into probably fried the chip without the Union noticing it. Any Clone that has survived serious head trauma or brain injury might be like Echo, Gregor might actually fit here.
    Clone force 99 is different and I think Tech is right. Crosshair was a jerk but that's not what made him give into the chip, it was that although his mind was divergent from a Reg, it wasn't by much. All the others have more divergent minds from the Reg standard than Crosshair, so it didn't work or would have to be modified to do more than just give them nagging unease and a headache.
    Omega is a Clone, but might not be a Jango clone, or only a a partial Jango clone. I think more of her genetic material than just a Y chromosome came from a different donor. She might not even have a chip or not one programmed the same way.

    Yeah, I think Cut's case is as simple as - he's a deserter, so he's staying away from technology that could lead him to be discovered, meaning nobody would call him to give the order. I don't think Sidious or the Kaminoans have any master switch except maaaaybe the possibility of Sidious using the force to activate the chips, but you'd need the right commands for it to work (so basically, you could think of it as a mass mind trick). Basically, not crazy about the idea that you can simply overcome the chip through will alone, because the chips overriding free will is literally what they're designed to do. See my comment on Rex below. I think you'd have to do a lot to reach out to a clone that's been activated under the order. I also don't think Cut's chip was malfunctioning like some said, because I feel like it's more powerful if he is just a normal clone who deserted, instead of having a biological reason behind his decision.
    For Rex, I think it's simply a matter of him knowing about what Fives told him. I think his relationship to Ahsoka and Anakin would've meant nothing if it weren't for Fives, if he got no warning and suspicion, he would've just flipped like the other clones. He could only resist like he did because he knew what was happening to him. In Tup's case, I don't think he needed to hear anything, I think his chip malfunctioning was all there was to it. There was a mention of him disappearing briefly, which is probably what caused the incident that led to the malfunction. In Grey's case, I like to think there's some Force stuff at work, like either enough time has passed for it to not be working at full capacity but I think Caleb's bond with Grey probably manifested in the Force in some way, and Caleb maybe unwittingly used the Force to reach out to Grey (think like Ahsoka using it to find Rex's chip).

    Maybe Cut has slight genetic mutations from standard clones. He looks a bit different (his hair looks more brown than black for example and has that grey stripe). Maybe this was enough to make him more independent and defect in the first place, and for order 66 not to register in the same way it didn’t for most of the bad batch

    Seems to me that Cut's chip never activated because he isn't a stormtrooper.
    I actually think Cut has the highest stakes of any clone in Order 66. Every other clone would lose themselves and turn on their Jedi, but Cut would lose himself and the family and the life that he's worked so hard for

  • @Ken-1313

    I think this is really convincing, and makes sense, but the way I read it Rex would have executed Order 66 if his chip wasn't removed. He was crying and shaking, but he still would have killed Ahsoka - which is a huge, huge deal. I don't think he could have overcome it if Ahsoka hadn't removed it. Also, Cut, Suu, and the kids are just great I hope they have a nice little farm life.

    I’m thinking it is as simple as this ... Cut never heard the order. As Tech explains in the first episode, the Palpatine didn’t make individual calls, a general order went out on repeat on Clone communication channels. Any clone using normal clone communicators or who was just near one who was would hear the order at some point that day. Cut was farming. Crosshair just wasn’t mutated enough to resist the order. Tupp’s chip malfunctioned. The ONLY reason Rex resisted the order was because he already knew about the conspiracy and was prepared to have to resist it.

  • @Flynn01979
    @Flynn01979 3 года назад +1

    I think the only reason Cut didn't carry out order 66 is because his chip didn't activate. I believe it required the code word for the chip to activate. Of course Palpatine didn't individually call every clone trooper. There was likely a mass message transmitted to the comms in the helmet of most of them. In the case of Tup, yes it did activate without the code word. But, that was only because it malfunctioned.

  • @general_cameroni
    @general_cameroni 3 года назад

    I do believe it's more complicated than just hearing the words. It is possible, however unlikely, that those words could have been said at some point to a clone simply by chance, as they're not really obscure words. Like Alex mentioned, the act of Palpatine contacting clones is more for the viewer's sake I feel. More likely I think it's the "switch" idea, that someone can press a button and the clones are all basically just droids. Because Cut left after Geonosis, he was probably just presumed to be dead and maybe his chip was simply disconnected from the control. But regardless, each clone's disposition and independence can impact how they handle the order. So it's of course a complicated web of things but the fact that Cut doesn't execute the order doesn't seem strange to me at all.

  • @imgrizze
    @imgrizze 3 года назад

    I think it's a combo of all these points. He was independent enough to resist, he wouldn't have been given the order, though I'm sure he heard it, and there were no Jedi around him to purge. The real question is what happened to Slick? The clone who defected to the separatists in the first season of clone wars. I wonder if he'll show up and will they touch on if he did it didn't take part in it

    Star Wars is built on hope. It would be deeply disappointing if every clone were a lost cause the moment that the chip is activated. And, as you said, we have evidence against that, even excluding the Batch. I would say that some clones are going to be a lost cause - for example, if they have weak wills or, even worse, want to go along with the chip's orders for some reason - but it would be bad storytelling to make all of them like that.

      It's also interesting that Kamino was actively developing a way to enhance the signal on Crosshair. Admittedly, Crosshair is a very valuable and talented clone, but he is one man. Perhaps the effort they put into developing a workable amplifier suggests that other clones were beginning to resist the chip

    And yeah, obviously Palpatine didn't call each and every clone. They passed the message along. Could be just the words "Execute Order 66" or it could be Palpatine saying it, either in person, or in a recording. Personally I theorize that the Kaminoans are able to remotely deactivate inhibitor chips of clones who are MIA or go AWOL as a means of protecting the secrets of the chip, because if it were to randomly activate in a clone who was not in the army at a random place and a random time, it could cause much bigger issues that they would be liable for but would have no way to monitor, whereas a malfunctioning chip in a clone who is still actively a part of the GAR and therefore under some level of surveillance is a much easier problem to manage

    Maybe plap just called up commander Cody specifically for some reason or another and for the rest of the clones he just out a net call of execute order 66 over all clone frequencies. That actually gives me an interesting story idea. What if there was a company of clones who happened to have gone dark when the order was issued meaning they never heard it.

    • @e115mastery

      I always thought that he called Cody specifically, and probably first, due to Obi Wan. He needed Kenobi out of the picture from the start as if there was anyone who could tempt anakin away from the dark side, it could have been his closest friend and master. Anakin was too caught up in his own 'save padme' narrative that Kenobi's survival didn't make things better but rather worse at the time.

  • @figjoy

    I think Palpatine wants to get rid of the clones for two reasons. Firstly, as you hope they may have a level of independence and strong minded clones that defect represent a substantial threat especially compared to storm troopers. Which leads to my second reason, the less expensive obedient storm troopers in such mass numbers are completely under Palpatine's direct control where as the clone army depends on the trust of the Caminoians.
    So yes, I think the clones can overcome their programming given enough time and will power, but removing the chip is the path to true independence.
