When Did Crosshair Remove His Inhibitor Chip?

  • Crosshair recently revealed that he removed his inhibitor chip some time ago, and that he has been willingly working for the Empire. So when did he do that? We can't say for sure, but I went back and rewatched all of his episodes in the series so far to make my best guess.

    I think it has to between when we see him on Bracca and the Ryloth episodes. His behaviour is much more sinister and straight up evil before that moment I feel.
    For instance in the Bracca arc, he directly says "aim for the kid" when Omega starts to talk about the inhibitor chips. But in the newest episode, he seems to be more human with his approach of dealing with her. I feel like in the episodes before Ryloth his goal was to kill his former squad, but the removal of the chip mixed with Howzers speech may have moved him towards seeking his brothers out once more.

      I have a feeling it could be as early as episode 3. In that episode, some operation was done to him. We assume his chip was supercharged *again* but it was not confirmed, and AZI tells him his vitals are good (removing chip could be lethal as we saw in Clone Wars). Then, Nala Se says "he responds positively to procedure" and Tarkin says "lets see if he stays that way" (which feels as if he was worried he doesnt remain loyal).

    This follows what I have concluded based on his actions alone, I agree that the Venator engines cooked his chip. I agree that he feels betrayed by the others of close force 99. I think we will see a redemption arc in the next season, or the season after, once he stops trying to get captured by the empire (playing the long con, that never pans out). I think he will just be happy to be with his family again, despite their differences in philosophy.

    Can I just point out that the first thing Hunter and co. did after escaping the cell on Kamino was try to find Crosshair? Crosshair didn't see that happen obviously, so it still doesn't invalidate his feelings in the matter, but as an audience member, I just like to remember that moment. In the beginning, it was very much a no-win situation, and later they might have felt it hopeless. I'm inclined to believe that they would have tried to get to him had they not been captured first. Though non of that would be seen that way through Crosshair's eyes for obvious reasons

      I don’t think that’s what Crosshair meant when he tells Hunter that they left him behind. He talks about being disloyal to him. To me, he meant that he made the right choice to serve the Empire, and the others didn’t agree and left. They didn’t join him. When he says to Hunter that he didn’t have a choice, I think he meant that due to his enhanced inhibitor chip, he was ordered to kill them and that’s what he tried to do.

    I think the "burn" scar isnt actually a burn scar he got from the venator. The wound he has, and its the only wound I might add, is waaaaay to convenient on the right spot.
    My 5 cents is that the venator accident deactivated it and he forced AZI to remove back it on Kamino, leaving a burn scar to cover it all up. Thats why AZI was "hiding" in Nala Ses secret Lab.

    I noticed when I rewatched the Clone Wars season 6 arc featuring Fives, Fives does NOT have a scar after his operation on Kamino. I paused the show at S6 Ep4 when he gets out of the taxi on Corusant and saw no scar. This leads me to believe that they can remove the chip on Kamino surgically without a lasting scar while perhaps the medical facility on the Venators are not capable of chip removal without some kind of tissue damage. I just wanted to report my findings. I also think with this in mind, Crosshair could have had the chip removed in episode 3, but i think that is unlikely. Like you pointed out, the Empire wouldn't just let Crosshair have the one thing controlling him removed unless it was damaged. I still believe that the time they took it out was after Bracca. I just think that it would be more tragic if he had it removed before then. It would make his character more complex, like adding more jealousy towards Omega. Love the content and I can't wait for the season finale.

    The Batch/Hunter had no way of knowing if or when Crosshair became free of his Inhibitor chip. In their last encounter with him, he tried to kill them. And now that they are protecting Omega, they are reluctant to attempt to rescue their lost brother. It would put Omega in peril.
    Furthermore, Crosshair has not made any attempt to contact his brothers after the incident on Bracca. So he blames Hunter and his brothers for not rescuing him, when he did nothing to contact them, except when doing the Empire's bidding.

    He doesn't have a scar, but neither did Fives. He had his chip removed, but it was on Kamino and treated right away with a special little bacta patch thing. Rex has a scar because it wasn't treated the same way, and I imagine the other Bad Batch members have scars, but I keep forgetting to look for them. They're always in headgear or facing the wrong direction, or I just never noticed. We know Wolffe and Gregor also get scars, so I think it's really just about how the wounds are treated afterward and with what. Crosshair not having a scar could just be a result of how he was treated. His injuries on Bracca were treated immediately, but they weren't on Kamino with the best medical facilities readily accessible, I think that may be a factor. He would have said he had his chip deactivated rather than removed, so I think it's whatever good stuff they got on Kamino keeping him scar free.

    I think that crosshairs chip was somehow deactivated when he received that burn form the venators engines, it seems likely that it was deactivated or at least severely wounded, and who knows? Maybe the empire put some kind of medicine in his burns and that somehow worsened his chip in doing it’s proper function but idk. But one thing is certain to me that if crosshairs chip was removed or damaged at some point in the series, when he got burned on the head by the venator it seems likely that his chip was burned during that encounter with the batch.

  • @Ana36377

    I agree with you. When the episode came out and a few people on a Discord server and I were discussing it, I suggested that Crosshair’s chip was, quote, ‘burnt out from his head during that episode with the engine’ and pointed out his burn scars as evidence. I wasn’t sure if my Discord friends knew what I was talking about since it was poorly worded (‘accidental deactivation’ sounds a lot more likely than ‘burnt out from his head’). Interesting that you note his behavioural shifts - they do seem different now with the information that we know. He acts less out of cold blood and has more thought put into his actions as well as his emotions to drive them, very much unlike a mindless clone drone (rhyme not intended).
    Funny side note: I was almost about to suggest the ‘Chip Enhancement Scene’ as a ‘Removal’ scene but decided against it because it sounded silly. Thanks to this video, I’m pretty sure that possibility is impossible. I actually forgot about the ‘Good Soldiers Follow Orders’ thing ever since Bracca Part One (seriously) and the issue of the chips in most of the Batch had been resolved. We also never hear Crosshair say it ever again (which in retrospect something I should’ve taken into consideration), although I did note in Return to Kamino Crosshair did tell his brothers something along the lines of “See, it’s not that hard to follow orders”. Not sure if that’s an important point or not.

    Great explanation, but they could have clarify that in the conversation between Hunter and Crosshair.

  • @dethoza

    Crosshair is very particular when it comes to the execution of his tasks. He doesn't question the intent behind it and he was probably aware that he had to right, what Hunter left him with when he didn't order the execution of the civilians. He sees himself as a lone wolf, but at the same time he wants his brothers back, which is at the same same time not something he wants to admit to himself.
    He probably got his chip removed, but he is sticking with the empire because otherwise his actions up to that point lose their purpose for him. He has a problem with Hunter being in charge and his tendency to make choices which complicate missions, while being the right thing to do. This personality will never stop colliding with the rest of the Bad Batch unless he gets over himself and accepts that he wants to be with them more than he wants to oppose Hunter. It's funny how this is en par with his role as a sniper, since that naturally requires precision and what he dislikes about Hunter is how he tends to change the focus of the mission, which in his eyes seems rather imprecise. He wants to avoid complications and Hunter causes them. Which works better as something you hunt down than something you are a part of, when you think like Crosshair.

      I wholeheartedly believe he still has his chip. It maybe damaged but I don't think either the Kaminoans or Empire would have the power of the it intensified only to shortly after remove it. He was probably told after Bracca that it had been removed so he thinks it's out. He couldn't tell Hunter when it was removed for good reason.

  • @larkmacgregor3143
    @larkmacgregor3143 Год назад

    Hunter never had the chance to offer anything to Crosshair. As you will recall, they had escaped from their cell and headed toward the hanger where their gear was being kept so that they could go rescue Crosshair. They were suiting up when Crosshair appears, in new Imperial armor with a new squad he is now Commander of, to take his brothers into custody. When they refuse, he and his new squad attempt to kill them, shooting Wrecker and only failing to shoot Hunter because Omega shot his rifle from his hands. Yes, he was definitely under the chip's control at that time, so even if they had been able to try to reason with him rather than flee for their lives, I doubt that any negotiations would have been successful. Remember - none of them knew about the control chips at that point, so even if they'd been able to capture him and take him with them, they wouldn't have been able to change Crosshair's now-enhanced programming, or even known it would be possible to do so. What would they have done with him - keep him imprisoned somehow until they could find out what was going on and fix it? So I think it's really unfair to blame the Batch for failing to do something they had no chance to do. That Crosshair would feel that way is logical from *his* point of view (and also extremely self-serving), but he was the one who, through no fault of his own, left them, not the other way around.

  • @FabledVerse

    Maybe the heat from the engine deactivated the chip - but later he had the already deactivated chip removed. So when he said he had the chip removed a while ago maybe it had short circuited due to the heat from the engine prior. This maybe why the empire may have removed it - if it was already deactivated.

    I really hope he is not lying. Villains need to be menacing, competent, dangerous and scary. Especially in a franchise like Star Wars. I know it's all about good and evil but the paralels are there with real life events. The evil of the Empire is something real and tangible. It appeals to people, it lifts some people up while crushing the masses. Its leaders and followers need to be rational, hell, even "good" men who chose evil willingly for whatever reason. Otherwise the lesson is that evil is ludicrously incompetent. As we can see in the real world, all evil needs to triumph is for good men to do nothing. Can't wait for the finale, I feel really sorry for Crosshair, I hope they manage to redeem him in some way, even though my gut feeling is that it will be the typical self-sacrifice story where he won't actually face the consequences of his previous choices and actions.

    What if after he was injured by the Venator engine, the empire told him that the chip was removed, but in fact didn't. Crosshair probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference and believes no that he is acting on his own accord. Therefore what he told Hunter was true, he thought his chip was gone.

    Bracca is the only time it *could* make sense, but I still believe he has the damned thing. Why else would they show him touching his head in pain. Wouldn't make sense to show this unless his chip (unknown to him apparently) is still present. Which makes me *very sad & frustrated.* I don't believe he's lying just that whoever told him it was taken out, *is.* Huge Crosshair fan.

    I’m not sure if it really matters. In fact, it does not matter if he has it, is lying about it, or has been deceived by the Empire.
    As Qui-Gon used to tell Obi-Wan, “Always be aware of the living Force.”
    All that matters is the here and now. Whether his chip is gone or not does not matter, anymore, He is an Imperial sympathizer.
    Crosshair gave the Bad Batch the ultimatum that we first heard from Darth Vader, “Join me, or die.”

  • @jadensmith4607
    @jadensmith4607 2 года назад

    I am probably wrong about this but my guess is that Crosshair is either lying or he did get his chip removed after the burn injuries he sustained on Bracca.I think due to his mutations Crosshair's personality was already predisposed to following orders. Which makes sense since he is a sniper, and he has to shoot without hesitation. Not only did Crosshair have his chip activated but it was later intensified to turn him into a loyal killing machine. With those to factors in mind I reckon assuming the chip got removed, due to his underlying personality and the experiments done on his chip I think Crosshair has been permanently altered. Like that's just the way he is now even without the chip. I think the only way for him to return to normal is to reverse the experiments somehow, maybe while unconscious someone like Ashoka could use the force to tap into his psyche and make him normal again, or at least less abrasive lol.

  • @michaelharvey7793

    Personally I feel his chip was removed just after the events in replacements, he realises that his imperial squad is loyal to him and he never says 'good soldiers' after this episode. Everything after this is mostly trying to remove the one thing that broke them apart (Omega) or eliminate them all entirely because they refuse to come back. I feel that look at the end of replacements is there to signify a huge change in crosshair and there wouldn't be a point to have it there for nothing

  • @Iceskyguy
    @Iceskyguy 3 года назад

    How would you even be able to tell if he has the removal scar, he's got so many on his head it's impossible to see😂😂
    It's also possible that he believes his chip was removed but it actually wasn't, so he's telling the truth, or at least what he believes is the truth and he is being honest. Maybe the Empire told him they took it out due to the nature of his injuries but really they didn't. Rampart seemed to be looking for any excuse to disgard clones entirely so maybe he tried a little experiment, telling Crosshair the chip was gone and seeing what happens. If Crosshair turned or became unruly, he could say to the Empire the chips are unreliable in the long run but if he didn't, Rampart still gets results for Tarkin. I hope he still does have it truly because that means the Batch can show Crosshair the Empire doesn't value him as much as he thinks and reconcile with him, not that I think they hold any blame for what happened and it's frustrating me that people are blaming them for leaving him behind when they had their choices taken from them like he did.
    I'm hoping for Crosshair to be brought back because I haven't liked him very much due to him saying he has no issue leaving other clones to die in TCW and I want that to change genuinely. If he's redeemed and does better than before, there's a chance that will happen. I never interpeted that scene in Replacements as him being sad or remorseful, it looked to me like he was feeling nothing because his chip had been turned up so much. If he felt anything for his brothers, it was gone by that point. People had been hoping to "real" Crosshair to break through the chip but that was never going to happen IMO because of how they turned his up
