Spellbinding ... absolutely spellbinding. Thank you!
Thank you - very kind of you!
You’ve introduced real drama to this humble Airfix kit. 👍
Thank you David :)
Ahh good old airfix,I have an original sea king, this one ,I have had this kit in my collection for about 15 years
Yes, it's a good little kit. I was surprised how old it was actually. Surely due a new tooling at some point?
Шикарная диорама!😊🎉
Thanks!
Looks fantastic! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻
Thanks
*Very nice diorama, only missing is a rotating rotor and it'll be 100% realist! Great job MN!*
Thanks. I did consider the rotating rotor but decided against it in this case. I'll definitely do some props like that in the future though, at some point.
Nice work creating such a lovely water texture without using lots of resin!
Thanks Will. I'm a big fan of this technique - and as you say, there is no messing around with resin, fumes, leaks, and so on.
All in all a really good and careful piece of art , also the voice over very calm,I i've never built a helicopter kit before ,but the Sea King Is a great machine
Thanks for watching!
Excellent build and diorama came out great...
Thanks Henry
Great job 👏 so appreciate you sharing your knowledge and skills, thanks
Thank you Rob - and thanks for watching
Wow amazing!.. 5:50
Thanks
@@ModelNerdIf I were to express a diorama with a helicopter like this, I would like to express it with a Kidult of the uh-60j Blackhawk "119 Helicopter Version" rather than that helicopter! 0:11
What a great job of my 2nd favourite helicopter a kit I wouldn't say no to making
Thanks Andy. It's an old kit, but still very decent. It would have been nice to have a bit more surface (rivets etc), but otherwise all good.
Nicely done - like the water build and mounting how-to.
Thank you Bryan
Excellent build. Top notch helo, crew, and water base.
Bill
Thank you Bill!
Brilliant! I've just finished my HC4 of this kit with a diorama
Thanks Martin. Enjoy!
A fantastic rescue diorama, the watter effects are just perfect!
Thanks Phil!
A true work of art...congratulations!
I suggest you make a video explaining how to make a Nimitz class aircraft carrier flight deck surface to place naval aircraft kits .
Thanks Fábio. That's an interesting suggestion - thank you.
congrats.
Thanks
Nice diorama, turned out great.
Thank you very much John :)
Stunning! 😍
Thank you! 😊 Their new 1/48 would be very nice too!
excellent work
Thank you!
Very nice diorama,,very realistic and the water effects are really well done ,nice relaxing video to watch
Thank you mate
fab work there looks great
Thanks mate
What a great scene!
I love how diverse your channel is. I myself mostly built armor models, sometimes a car. But you give me the inspiration to look a little further and discover interesting models and topics. Thank‘s a lot!
Thank you fuxs, I appreciate that. Yes, I do like to vary things a bit. Civilian cars and gundam are really the only things I don't really build.
Great job!
Thanks!
Just watched this video (01/11/23) I recently purchased this exact model and now with thanks to yourself I've managed to order a pack of the SAR crew members.
Fantastic - I'm glad the video was helpful. You might have been just in time - I think PJ Productions might be going out of business.

Thank you Freddie
Outstanding
Thank you Stephen
fantastic.
Thank you Eric
Hi Nerd, that whole diorama turned out perfectly, you do e a great job of both the Sea King and the water, the tissue idea was excellent.
Thank you Les. I can't claim it as my original technique though - there are quite a few examples of it out there :)
Top job!
Thanks Dan
I bought this kit a couple of months ago. I don't think I've seen this water technique using tissue paper before - it's an interesting one with a nice end result.
Thank you David. Yes, there are a few people out there using this technique - though more often on smaller scales like model railways.
Very dinamic and spectacular!
Thanks mate. I'll definitely try this technique again in the future, and hopefully improve it
Excellent use of everyday products to create a very realistic sea base for the diorama.....terrific visual effect using tissue paper, PVA, water and gel. Great job on the Sea King too. Thank you!
Thanks Robbo!
Nice video of a fantastic build! I'm building the same kit with a similar diorama concept (I'm going to include some rocks and a stranded 3d printed boat). I mistakenly cut off the notches that separated the landing gear cowls from the fuselage. Realized my mistake only too late.
The water effects are spectacular
Thank you! Ah, I know the pain of doing something like that! Hopefully you'll be able to reattach them, or replace them with a small piece of styrene?
Nice job. Good subject.
Thank you Daniel
That was an awesome job. Well done on the water effect for the diorama!
Thank you very much Tim!
Really enjoyed the video. Thanks for uploading it.
Thanks mate
That turned out brilliantly. Very interesting. Cheers.
Thanks John. Looks like you've got some interesting projects in your painting lineup too!
@@ModelNerd Thanks mate - the sea base/effect is incredible. Your panel highlighting was quite effective on that bright yellow finish. The dogs are happy when I'm sitting here not moving about. Cheers
Great build…I always admire your attention to detail and the overall time it must take you to create and build these projects. You really give it your best efforts! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you T.J!
Great work on everything 👍
Thanks mate :)
I remember having the Apollo recovery version of the Sea King back in the day...
That would be cool!
That looks amazing bud. The way you have the downwash is outstanding. Really Amazing.
Thanks mate - I appreciate the feedback! Glad you liked it 🙂
@@ModelNerdamazing result,well done....as Lord Vader himself would say....."Impressive,MOST impressive"
Nice job - including a pretty realistic seascape. The Winch Operator should have been moved forward, so that his right hand was steadying the cable and his left hand would have been in the cabin operating the hoist control. He would normally wear a green immersion suit, and the Winchman wore a yellow suit for water entry. The yellow objects to the rear of the Cargo Door are MS10 life rafts. The roof stretcher is a Stokes Litter, and there was tons of other crap stowed inside. If you wanna be perfect, manufacture some winch weights to hang down by the door -they helped stop the door sliding shut when the door brake was weak. Very nice though, very skilful. The major error is that the Winchman is not slim, young and handsome enough!!!
Thanks Matt, I appreciate knowing these details. Haha, very important point there in the final sentence!
Something tells me you were a Winchman once :D
👍@@WatchinDWorldGoBy
Great build, I watch a few modellers, this video popped up as a RUclips "might be of interest one", and yeah its great, I love the yellow Sea King and the ones' used by NASA early space program, so anyway you have a new subscriber here, keep up the great work.
Thank you, Richard. Yes, if I hadn't gone for this scheme the NASA recovery scheme would have been my choice for sure :)
Excellent work Sir. Ged
Thank you!
First time watching one of your videos and I have to say I really enjoyed it! Great diorama and that water was genius.
Thanks mate - glad you enjoyed it
Great job! Turned out really nice.
As far as clear parts goes, I now only use a UV glue on them. As the hold is very strong and the glue dries clear. Give it a try, you might not use anything else agsin. lol
Continued success on your builds!
Thanks mate. I'll give that a try.
Great Diorama! The walter looks really nice!! I would only suggest doing more color layers and layers with a gloss clear coat to get even more depth :)
Thanks. Yes, the depth is something I'd like to work on a bit more. The colours look better in real life than on camera unfortunately. I think I might also try PVA glue as the gloss layer, since it will probably go down thicker.
Great build as always 👍
Thanks Aaron 👍
Awesome build.
Thanks Ian!
The water is fantastic. A static model which shows a lot of action and movement. Great job. Thank you as always
Thank you Michael, I'm really glad you liked it
Looks fantastic
Thanks Liam
I'm actually building one of these kits at the moment :)
Really nice build, and a great diorama 👍
Thank you!
Nicely done! Hopefully with much practice and these videos, I too will be able to achieve results like yours. Cheers!
Thanks Andrew. As long as you're having fun!
'That yellow bag near the door' is an inflatable life raft.
Thanks :)
Nice work! Interesting technique with the base!
Thanks. I've got a couple of sea planes I might have to try this technique with in the future :)
Awesome job that 👏. Would love that in a display cabinet at home
Thanks Lloyd
Absolutely crisp model. You really did carefully in every detail. The one thing I'm looking for is a model with antennae rigging. I got two models and I'm pondering to work the rigging out in this portion of both helicopters. Maybe is not very wise but I will try. Of course I wont use any kind of plastic thread but a piece of sprue enlarged with a mild flame.
Thanks Charlie. I did consider rigging this but found conflicting information in various sources. Good luck with yours!
@@ModelNerd ups, you're all right. Maybe is not rigged at all on actual helos. Thank you for your answer
@@ModelNerd I've checked the actual helo and indeed the antennae is rigged all the way down to the tail.
If it were me. If you were to decorate a diorama like that with that 1/72 scale Kidult!. Rather than that Sea King, I'm thinking of assembling and painting the uh-60j Blackhawk and decorating it into a diorama! 4:01
Because there is a video on RUclips of the Sea King Helicopter Kidult decorating it into a diorama! The Blackhawk helicopter Kidult called uh-60j is completely decorated as a diorama, and there is no video showing it, so when I get the chance, I want to upload a video of me decorating the Blackhawk helicopter Kidult into such a diorama on RUclips! 4:16
Sounds good
@@ModelNerd the pin wash?? 14:15
excellent build!
Thanks Daniel - I'm glad you liked it
Amazing!, v.talented, you have a great voice for narration also 😀👍
Thank you Gary, much appreciated
Beautiful build 👌🏼🤘🏼... he need a reason to be being winched down 👍🏼
He's going for a swimmer who has just disappeared below the surface...probably....
I have the same kit and hope to the same. I really benefited from your video and the small points needing to be fixed.
That’s a great result from the kitchen roll/ gloss mix. I think that’s my way forward too.
Again thanks and I look forward to updates 😊
Subscribed with pleasure, Ian
Thank you Ian - I'm glad the video was helpful :)
@@ModelNerd 👍🏼
On helos with retractable gear. You always lower them in a hover. It provides a small level of protection in case we lose lift.
Thank you, Robert, that's great to know. I did wonder why they were down in images :)
Not altogether true. The Sea King had a poor single engine performance and so hovering over land we would always lower the gear. Over the sea however if one of the engines failed the Sea King could land on the water, dump fuel to a predetermined weight and attempt a single engine water take off. For this the gear needed to be up. So generally gear down hovering over land and up over the sea.
Amazing. Keep it up good work.
Thank you mate!
Very nice indeed.👍😎
Cheers Lloyd - glad you liked it
Wow that looks awesome 👍🏻
Thanks Brian
@@ModelNerd You’re welcome
Epic result my friend. Keep ups the good work. Stu
Thank you, Stu - I'll try!
Great build mate, looks awesome in yellow, built this myself recently and agree that yellow paint is a challenge to use well, still have a window rattling about inside the kit though, should have used more superglue 😆
Thanks Anthony. Nah, it's not rattling around - it fell out :D
Красиво!
Thanks :)
Awesome video!
Thanks Daniel!
Super job. I use tin foil for sea effects.
Thanks Paul. Yes, foil can work really well too.
Nice 👌🏻
Thank you :) Cheers!
Great subject and an excellent build.always a shame when bits are missing. (no matter how small) in saying that ,the S A R Sea king is resplendent in its final paint finish... But you have excelled in the sea scape. ATVB2U Scott Somerset
Thank you Scott, I appreciate the feedback. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Mainly used by the Coast Guard
dont know if you know this, but if you use tamiya extra thin quick setting, and just touch the corners on the clear parts it will capillery around the edge and fuse the pieces togheter and because its the quick type it wont fog the windows if you are careful. i am impressed at how you are able to use superglue to mount the clear parts without ruining them.
Thanks - I didn't know that. I really don't like the smell of Tamiya extra thin for normal use, but I might have to keep some aside for this. For the superglue it really was tiny amounts I used, applied with a cocktail stick.
@@ModelNerd yeah extra thin Quick setting does smell sort of like mustard
Thankyou Model Nerd! This is a great video I’ve enjoyed all of these you have made. Your calm dialogue, interesting descriptions and flaws and all presentation have really gotten me through the lockdowns. Please keep up the great work, these videos are appreciated whenever they appear in my feed. 🙏🏻👍👊😎
@@antmerritt Thank you Ant, I really appreciate your support and I'm glad the videos were useful.
I think Airfix do a RNLI Severn class lifeboat to the same scale .
Yes, they do - I've been quite tempted by it to be honest...
Nice diorama, but if they were actually rescuing someone in the water would have made it a great diorama. 👍
Thanks Andy
Great work, especially the water effect but I think the black part of the fuselage should be bare metal and then have exhaust staining?
Thanks mate. I'm not sure about the black part - I haven't seen any reference images with it in bare metal?
Yet another excellent build ! Water effects are fantastic . Never built a helicopter kit and i am now going to try one . Take it you didn't need the life raft for this diorama, that i sent you the suggestions for or is it for a future build ?
Regards nick
Thank you Nick. No, the raft was for the Sunderland build, when I eventually get around to it.
@@ModelNerd Thanks for reply . Ahh right ok , got it now , hence the box art picture . Look forward too that build , sunderland looks like a great kit . Good choice , no doubt you will do it justice .
Good choice
Here in the u.s. they used to use HH-52 Helicopter
That's a great one. Why didn't you use resin for the water? (Not bitching, just curious)
Thanks mate. Fair question indeed. I guess a couple of reasons: firstly, it is notoriously awkward to use in thick layers, and I've had issues with it before. Related to that, because this is supposed to be the ocean I would need to colour it quite heavily or pour it quite thick, so that we wouldn't see the bottom of the base. I do have some resin for a future project though :)
Great build and diorama. I’m curios, the 1 yellow blade is it standard or an artistic liberty?
I built a 1/35 kitty hawk approaching a building to drop a SEAL team off. Inspiration from the movie Blackhawk Down.
Keep up the great work.
It was standard, it created a flickering effect making the helicopter visible from above.
Thanks CJ. That SEAL team diorama sounds great - I'm really glad more aircraft are available in 1:35 these days. Yes, as Kitbag says - the yellow blade is for visibility. The instructions say top and bottom were yellow but the example at RAF Hendon only had the top yellow.
i noticed when you fitted the wheels you put the flattened part to the top... that flattened part is to represent weight on wheels when landed and should be on the bottom... Of course in flight the bulge in the wheels would not show, and the tires would look perfectly round
Yep, that's exactly why I did it - because I wanted to hide it in flight
NIce built. But who or what are they saving? both wear orange, so its the same crew?
Both figures in orange are part of the rescue crew - a crewman always gets lowered, never just an empty winch. Who are they rescuing? Somebody who just disappeared under the waves. Or maybe they are just training :)
If using the oil paint mixed with thinners for pin wash, does it dry as quick as say🤔 tamiya panelline🤔
Oils in general will take maybe a bit longer to dry I think - but it also depends on how much you let the oil soak out before use (by placing the paints on a piece of cardboard or paper towel).
@@ModelNerd thanks👍
@@ModelNerd gr8 sea king build buy the way, ive noticed pieces broken off in airfix kits ive done aswell, i think really its not acceptable for it to happen aspecially for a company like airfix ☺👍👍
Can you help me out with an issue I am having? I recently built the new Airfix 1/24 scale Spitfire and want to build it into a diorama. However, there is nothing like figures and vehicles so would using say a 1/35 scale work any advice please
Hamish, I know the feeling! I think there is a single pilot figure out (which may no longer be available) and nothing else. Unfortunately I don't think 1/35 would work: a 6ft / 185cm figure would be 77mm tall in 1/24 but only 52mm tall in 1/35. That's quite a difference.
Perhaps, maybe, hopefully, somebody will release ground crew in this scale in the future - but I wouldn't hold my breath.
did he catch that the compression of the wheels was facing up?
Yep, he did. There shouldn't be any compression on hover so I tried to hide it.
Wasn't this in FSM?
Not mine unfortunately :)
If I were to express a diorama with a helicopter like this, I would like to express it with a Kidult of the uh-60j Blackhawk "119 Helicopter Version" rather than that helicopter! 0:17
Sounds cool!
How did you paint the inside of the helicopter?? 7:50
When coloring this aircraft, it wasn't just done with one airbrush! 3:32
Well, unless the whole thing was painted with an airbrush. Did you also brush it? 3:32
Actually, after watching this video, I was thinking of coloring two of the three 1/72 scale UH-60 Blackhawk Kidults with an airbrush when adding "stripes (lace painting)" to the outside of the fuselage! . Watching this video, I was completely shocked by the fact that the airbrush and brush strokes were completely mixed! 3:49
How did you paint those small parts like seats [chairs]? 3:55
The bigger parts were all airbrushed. The smaller parts were brush painted :)
I feel like I’m on hold at 5:19
Yeah, it's hard to choose decent background music sometimes
Sir pls post the materials you used to build this diorama
What paint did you use to color this aircraft!..?? 18:13
Tamiya XF-3 yellow
@@ModelNerdDid you airbrush paint the entire fuselage with Tamiya acrylic paint!..?? 16:35
Yes :) I use Tamiya acrylics in my airbrush a lot. That said, I might have used X-8 Gloss yellow rather than the one I mentioned above.
How did you paint the inside of the helicopter?? 6:28
Is this fuselage painted with lacquer paint..?? 10:59
It's painted using Tamiya acrylic paints and an airbrush
@@ModelNerdThat landing gear and internal instrument panel must be very fine and small. How did you paint them?? 7:44
Just a comment for the algorithm
Thanks Robert
Where do you sell those figures?? 14:55
What is the main purpose of that Lee Gang-yong thread? 14:56
But is it appropriate to color using lacquer paint and acrylic paint alternately? 15:09
I just use acrylic paints
I bought them from Hannants in the UK
@@ModelNerdYes, what!.. They painted it by spraying acrylic paint with an airbrush!..?? 13:09
This kit really disappointed me. It's missing the prominent VOR/ILS antenna on the tail, the vent screens on the top front of the main rotor housing, the troop seat supports are in the wrong place and using decals to represent the many cooling vents really doesn't look convincing. Main rotor also pretty simplified. Will use some of this kits interior parts on the Revell Germany Sea King.
You did an excellent job on yours though.
I have several of those crew sets; think both the winchman and rescue swimmer are supposed to be positioned in the door, not on a rescue cable.
Thanks. Yes, it isn't great and it's a shame this gap in the market hasn't been filled. I think you're right about the figures - neither pose was really correct for being lowered, but I had to do it :)
