  • This is my full build video of the Italeri Sikorsky SH-3D Sea King "Helicopter 66" in 1/72 Scale. Helicopter 66 is possibly the most famous helicopter in flight history. It was used for water recovery of astronauts of five Apollo space missions. On July 24, 1969 it took off of USS Hornet, hoisted the Apollo 11 astronauts aboard and safely returned them to the carrier.
    Stay tuned to my channel and don’t miss out on upcoming build videos and more! I consider myself an advanced beginner in the world of scale model building and I am doing my best to improve my skills and techniques. that is a really nice model, you did a good job. the only thing missing is the ends of the rotor blades on top have the tips painted in either white, or yellow so when they are spinning any person leaving or entering the helicopter or flight crews working around the helicopter can see where they are and not walk into them.

    • @RWOModels
      @RWOModels  Год назад

      Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on the video, appreciate it. The Italeri build instructions did not indicate painted rotor blade tips, and in the photos I used for reference I could not clearly identify white or yellow blade tips either (maybe I missed it or the image quality wasn't good enough). That's why I decided to leave the blade tips unpainted, but I'm with you, it's definitely an important safety feature. Thanks again for bringing this detail up.

    That was GREAT!!! An excellent choice of SH-3's.......I myself have an older Hasagawa 1/72 SH-3 that I still have and want to build, but I have a few questions... 1) What psi do you use for your airbrush....it's been awhile that I used one, 2) Is it Tamiya yellow tape that you use, 3) What type of putty did you use for that painting of the grey underside (the one that goes around the whole A/C, and lastly, have you thought of having the sliding door open (the Big one on starboard side) to show off interior???
    Otherwise Super!!

    • @RWOModels
      @RWOModels  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for your comment! Below a few answers to your questions, hope this helps:
      1) I usually start at 15psi (0.2mm nozzle). Sometimes even a bit lower, in some cases up to 25psi. But approximately 15psi is my most used pressure setting.
      2) Yes, I mainly use Tamiya masking tape in different sizes. When I need to cover larger areas I use cheap no-name „sensitive“ masking tape.
      3) Stuff is called „UHU patafix“ here in Germany, another brand would be „Tesa Tack“. Not sure how this is called in other countries.
      4) The Italeri/Fujimi kit does not offer too much interior details, and since I usually build my models right out of the box without additional scratch-built or aftermarket parts I decided to build the door in closed position.
      Thanks again and all the best from Germany, RWO/Oliver

      Hi there, not sure if I understand your question correctly, but usually there is no residue from the tape if you use special masking tape like Tamiya etc. It is a special low tack tape designed to avoid picking up paint as well as leaving residues. 🙂 Apart from that it is always a good idea to properly prepare and clean the surfaces before painting, for example with isopropyl alcohol. Very nice build of an interesting subject! I find it very annoying that Italeri doesn’t include the Apollo capsule when the kit is called Apollo Recovery featuring the Apollo Command Module on the box art. I will wait for the Dragon kit that will include this. The Dragon kit will be based on the Cyber Hobby model first issued in 2012 (according to Scalemates). The Italeri originates from the Fujimi kit dating back to 1981.

    • @zvedberg1
      @zvedberg1 3 года назад

      I just noticed another interesting thing about the Italeri kit. The box says ”Lunar module and and figures not included” in a small text at the bottom. The Lunar Module was crashed into the moon as soon as the crew had transferred to the Command Module so there would be no reason to include it in the kit. If you’d believe this literally you’d still expect to find a Command Module in the box. Makes me even more annoyed. 😬

    • @RWOModels
      @RWOModels  3 года назад

      Hi Magnus, I think you're absolutely right concerning the Lun..., err, Command Module! :) I must admit I also expected it to be part of the kit, not knowing at the time it was basically an old Fujimi re-release. So when I opened the box I was a bit disappointed, the capsule would have been a great addition anyway! Thanks for watching, stay safe! Cheers, Oliver/RWO

  • @mh53j

    Pretty sure (without checking my stash) that this is an older Fujimi Sea King from the 80s. Tag saying kit made in Japan, the pointed pillars the seats rest on and the awful windscreen indicate this.
    They were good at the time but....

    • @RWOModels
      @RWOModels  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I also read somewhere it is an old Fujimi kit. Not the best kit in any terms, but received it as a gift, so I'm not complaining. :) Cheers!

      @@RWOModels I purchased several of the Fujimi Westland Sea Kings several years ago on eBay for only a few bucks a piece to rob them of their six bladed tail rotors, interior troop seats and the "early" pattern main rotors to refit some Revell Germany Sea Kings to Falklands War era HAR3s and HC4s. Even the newer Airfix HC4 and HAR3 have the newer main rotors and need an older donor kit to backdate to Falklands era.
      Pretty sure Testors carried the Fujimi Sea Kings under their brand in the late 80s..
      Worst part of the Fujimi kit was the cockpit windscreen; the framing was way out of proportion. Rest of the kit really wasn't too bad.

      Hi, I don't have a general thinning ratio, I add as much thinner as needed to achieve the paint consistency that I want (the lower the airbrush pressure the thinner the paint). For some colors the paint/thinner ratio may be around 80/20, sometimes 50/50, or in some special cases (post-shading etc.) it can be even 20/80. So it all depends. 😉 Hope this helps anyway, thanks for watching!

    Lot of skill displayed but little pr no research dome with the construction of a sea king (a great deal of trimming to ensure a "good fit" makes this model incorrect. (There is a gap between the fuselage and sponson you can fit your hand between for example). Interior colours and rotor head colours are made-up and way off the realkty.
