    True story for ya: Back in '89, my Mom rented a game with a printed label on it that said 'Baby Mario' , and it had a Famicom to NES converter attached to it. I played the heck out of this game to the point that - because my Mom kept renewing the rental - my Mom asked the rental shop manager to buy the game outright; this was my second game for the NES after Q-Bert and it got all the play time. In later years, I would come to discover that this title was actually called Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa!! by Konami, which was a Famicom Disk System game in 1988 but that was thrown on a cartridge in other territories (before being put on cartridge in Japan in '93). My sister still has that cartridge, while I bought a Disk System just for this one game; it's one of my favourites!
    Upa is a cute little baby character who crawls through platforming levels and whacks enemies with his rattle, which blows them up like a balloon. You can let the enemies float away, headbutt them to use as projectiles, or jump on them as platforms. Levels are really creative, being made of candy, school supplies, Lego, toys...all kinds of kid-centric things (one level is a cake you have to eat your way through, lol), and the music is what you'd expect from Konami.
    Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa!! is a wonderful Mario-like game that's a real trip with good challenge. You can play as Upa in the Parodius games, but his one solo experience certainly deserves a look by those who like Mario games!

    Rayman 2 and 3 are games I would easily suggest for Mario fans. Or fans of 3D platformers in general. They have amazing music, great controls, unique stories and characters, and a really fun world to explore. Though the games are mostly linear in their structure, your goal is generally just to get to the end of the level, the way you go about it is so varied and fun. I recommend the Dreamcast and N64 versions of Rayman 2, as for Rayman 3 you really can’t go wrong with any of the home console releases. The Xbox and Gamecube versions would be my picks though

    Personally, I think of Klonoa as being somewhat closer to Kirby and Yoshi games. Why? Because Klonoa, like those games, is a platformer where you have to use your enemies. Kirby eats them for powers, Yoshi eats them for eggs as ammo, and Klonoa throws them for ammo and for movement. Also Klonoa tends to be on the easier side, much like Kirby and Yoshi games (also, yeah, I differentiate Yoshi games from normal Mario).
    Not that Mario is that far off of a comparison, seeing as they're both fun and delightful platformers.

    All great choices
    If we're including headdy, Ristar, and rayman I would recommend Plok. It's also a mario inspired game where you throw your limbs and also very challenging like those, it's not very similar to mario games but it has the bright colors, catchy music, and strange levels.

      It also inspired the visual style of Yoshi's Island, ironically enough. And Nintendo themselves almost published it.

      Plok has amazing music, although the first couple levels are a weird combination of boring/weird difficult if you aren't patient.

    Ape Escape, for PS1! Great 3D platformer with a huge variety of worlds, via time-travel. Even the camera mechanics are similar to Super Mario 64!

    Some fine choices here RB. Especially Klonoa and Rayman legends (SO GOOD). I had a really good time with Rayman 3 on GBA as well and it’s still not very expensive.
    And hey, for anyone who has ever wished that Mario was a robot and had a gun for an arm, maybe try some mega man!

    I'm a Sonic fan, but I do have my favorite Mario games. Anyways I like Aero, Bubsy, and Astal. Then Rayman , High Seas havoc, Dynamite heady, and Ristar came into my life . I have more mascot platformers I love but there is so many

    We need more videos like this:
    Games for Zelda fans (we already got that "Zelda clone" for Genesis, it's on Genesis 2 Mini)
    Games for Metroid fans
    Games for Mega Man fans (Mighty No 9 is one example)
    Games for Pokemon fans
    Games for Final Fantasy fans
    And so on, and so on...

    Nice recommendations. I've been playing a game called Spinch recently which I would definitely recommend to Mario fans. It's a very unique 2d platformer with psychedelic visuals and awesome synth music. Definitely go for the Steam version if you can though as the Switch port has issues.

    • @IronMadden
      @IronMadden Год назад

      I've tried Spinch before, and while I found the game alright, I honestly couldn't stand the underwater mechanics, and the last level has a major difficulty spike that can take you by surprise if you aren't ready. Swimming underwater felt like swimming through molasses to me.

    Klonoa is great. Years ago I bought a loose disc copy, it was $90 CAD, I thought that was expensive then. Defanatly try the Switch version, it's a fun time.

    I gotta check out those first two! For me, I think two games that I would recommend to Mario fans are A Hat in Time and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. A Hat in Time is just as good as any 3D Mario game (albeit less polished, as an indie) and its combination of open world collectathons and linear platforming should satisfy fans of any 3D Mario game. I would put it third to 3D World and Galaxy 2!
    As for Kirby and the Forgotten Land, I specifically recommend it because it is very much Super Mario 3D World with a Kirby coat of paint. I think if you like the level design of 3D Land and 3D World, you will like Forgotten Land. It scratches the same itch.

    One thing the video doesn't mention, is that, even though I LOVE Treasure and was really looking forward to playing Dynamite Heady for the first time last year, I thought it was ruined by the game's imbalance and difficulty spike in the second half of the game. Felt very cheap. Apparently, the owner of Treasure, Masoto Maegawa said in an interview that Sega Of America insisted on that . The Japanese version has much better balance. Play it on the Genesis Mini and just switch the language to Japanese.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  Год назад +1

      The Japanese version has a lot of other regional differences as well, so it's definitely worth checking out.
