As much respect as I have for Miyamoto, his constant dislike of story in games needs to go away forever.
Adding even simple story context to a Mario game, fleshing out the reasons why you're doing what you're doing, can add a lot of extra engagement to the game. It doesn't need to be a Metal Gear Solid style epic. The story we got in Galaxy was plenty. I like having a goal other than "Complete level, beat Bowser, acquire princess"

Miyamoto's insistence on taking away story elements from Mario games is such a horribly bad take. I've played and enjoyed most mainline Mario games but never considered myself a fan like I do other game series, and I've realized it's entirely because of this insistence on keeping the games devoid of story elements which can make people more invested in the characters and world. It always just feels like I'm playing a video game with Mario rather than letting myself have a suspension of disbelief to get immersed in the world. Galaxy 1 will always be better than 2 in my eyes simply because of its heavy immersion.

It makes it fun just talking to the NPCs and seeing what they have to say. I recall stuff like in the first level, that mother with her kids will throw you because she's annoyed at her kids and after a while in a later episode she's like "You just enjoy getting thrown, don't you?" and a similar thing happens in the hotel where a female pinata starts thinking you are going in the ladies room on purpose. It doesn't have to be Metal Gear Solid as one comment here already said, but just a little story can make me feel more invested than just going from point A to B.

Miyamoto's insistence in this solely gameplay-centric ideal is seriously a hindrance and is counterproductive for the medium. It's like in his perspective, the idea of having good gameplay whilst it still managing to have narrative depth is just not possible--that they are simply mutually exclusive. However, the reality of it says otherwise as embracing the storytelling capability of games would only serve to add more depth and give meaning to its gameplay. In fact, having narrative depth or the possesion of meaningful theme goes well in the act of preserving a game, as with it focusing on the meaningful experience it can provide--no matter how much certain gameplay convetions ages--as long as it has this focused vision, the rich experience a game is trying to convey will stand the test of time. This is the reason why games like Majora's Mask where despite admittedly having certain aspect of it aging terribly, like with its controls and various quality of life features it lacks, is still revered in its strong narrative theming and proper utilization of games' storytelling capabilities as a medium of art.
It's just that, certainly, not all games needs to be so frivolous and perhaps pretentious as to take on the moniker of art. It is absolutely fine to choose to tackle the image of games as just glorified toys meant to deliver fun and fun alone. But even so, to be so actively against the quality of games being art like how Miyamoto is adamant about is simply just that--ignorant and a little bit foolish.

This may not be official, but I've always seen the reason for Galaxy 2's story as this:
At the end of Mario Galaxy 1, if you examine Rosalina's dialogue, you can gather that the Galaxy reset itself, and thus the events of the first game were canceled out by itself. She also said that "the cycle never repeats itself in quite the same way." I always viewed Galaxy 2 as the cycle repeating itself, but slightly different. It is really sad to see Miyamoto seemingly have a passion to shut down almost everything that is related to story.
The "heavy" story elements like the story book or dialogues did not take away anything from the game or it's gameplay and only added stuff. Not to mention that the story book is entirely optional.
And then there were "light" storys like the evolution on the penguins to become the best racers in the cosmos or Captain Toad and his crew exploring the galaxies for research.
On your first playthrough you might miss ALL of this but there is a lot to appreciate upon closer inspection. Once again I want to stress that this didn't take anything away from the core game at all.
These story elements were sadly missing in Galaxy 2 and don't get me wrong, I really really like Super Mario Galaxy 2, it is an amazing game, but the story elements, both the heavy ones like Rosalinas past and the light ones like the storylines of Captain Toad, the Pengiuns, the Bees etc., gave Super Mario Galaxy 1 it's strong identity, which to this day very well may be the still unmatched Magnum Opus of Mario Storytelling among the Mainline 3D Mario Games.
I respect Miyamoto as a creative but I can't wrap my head around, how he can possibly be so narrow minded and blind, when it comes to these things and yes, I know that these are really hard words to describe it, but critique must be straight-to-the-point and this is a topic I am really passionate about. If your gaming franchise isn't driven by the story, it doesn't mean you should basically do no story at all.
When playing Mario Games today, my desire for some sort of a story rarely get's satisfied. Mario is a franchise driven by gameplay and this is perfectly fine, but Mario Galaxys story did not shift the focus away from the gameplay, it just gave the game more ground to stand on and some things extra to discover for players, who don't just play the game but want to discover worlds and characters within the game.
I was so happy, when I saw, how Super Mario Odyssey tried to put more emphasis into a story, even if it's rather simple compared to Galaxy. They created tension within the world and actually a good chuck of the story, like Mario trying to secure the wedding ring from being stolen by Bowser in the Sand Kingdom, is optional.
Mario Odyssey might have kinda a weird pacing, when it comes to the story sense, but it took steps into the Super Mario Galaxy 1 direction by introducing subtle story-elements and moments of tension into an otherwise simple story but not taking away from the most important part of Mario: The Gameplay.
All thanks to Yoshiaki Koizumi and Miyamoto this time giving the team more freedom in this sense.
Once again I respect Shigeru Miyamoto. He has a hand for gamedesign and his hand for creating good gameplay experiences lead to some of the most enjoyable games in the history of gaming and set a standard for many games afterwards, but his approach to story is so minimalistic, that it is really saddening upon closer insprection.
When Miyamoto hands the keys to the Mushroom Kingdom over to someone, I hope it is Yoshiaki Koizumi. I think Yoshiaki Koizumi understands, that gameplay is the driving force of Super Mario but you can incorporate a story without hurting the gameplay to create tension and hook the player even with the most basic storyline.
Thanks for this video DYKG. Super Mario Galaxy is my most favorite game of all time and I love that you highlighted the story aspect of the game and the games that came after, since it is something I (as a soon-to-be-author) am really passionate about and stories in Mario Games get overlooked very easily.

I have to hand it to my boy Koizumi since having an actual fleshed-out story is what makes Super Mario Galaxy so special to me and why I prefer it over the first one. Not that Mario games need an epic and impressive story or anything, since they most certainly don’t, but it just felt like an added touch that I didn’t know I needed but still elevated the series to heights it hadn’t reached beforehand. Miyamoto’s a great game designer and all, but making Mario Galaxy 2 go back to a basic and bare bones Mario story was a big mistake and honestly just borders on lazy. Maybe in the 80s and 90s, games could get away with this, but in the modern era his mindset just seems to be severely dated and only stifles creative freedom, which’s why I’m actually glad Koizumi ended up helming Odyssey while Miyamoto only really served as a producer instead.

I appreciate what Miyamoto has done for Nintendo but he is REALLY holding them back now with archaic ideals, your Average child these days handle ipods and tablets, im pretty sure Mario games are never gonna be as complex as Miyamoto fears for "anyone" to handle, which has been his main argument for keeping Mario so simple, he wants Mario accessible to everyone of all ages, kid, teens, adults but the demographic of minimal intelligence has risen, no one will ever find a mario game "Complex" anymore, you wanna know complex? Elite Dangerous, Eve online, Game of fucking Thrones.
Yea, Miyamoto needs to chill or retire and let the fresh talent take the wheel, Mario Galaxy was great and then Galaxy 2 was just "Go Save things! no story lul, oh but we added Yoshi so... 60 bucks please. :> " lol thank goodness i never brought Galaxy 2, it certainly would have been a rip off with Miyamoto demanding less story and more simplified gameplay. :/

I never knew you felt so strongly about story in a Mario game. I mean the first game in 1985 had such a rich compelling story that even the 1986 sequel took it a step further and made it much deeper, right?

Honestly miyamoto has lost his touch and it’s time for him to stop having so much influence. I don’t need a masterpiece story in Mario, but the best zeldas have been plot heavy and I’d argue stories that are more than just “hurt dur peach gone get her that’s it” would improve Mario greatly.
It’s fine to have that trope, but there’s so much more you can do with it.
Miyamoto feels less like a visionary nowadays and more like someone stuck in an era that’s over. Plus all his new ideas have mostly been wack, like star Fox.
