I'm in my forties. The best thing about my collection is having all the consoles and games I used to have and want as a kid, and discovering all the games I missed from the '80s and '90s. I've been collecting for the past 6 years and it's been so fun and fulfilling. The only newer consoles I have is the switch and 3DS. I love adding new sega, nintendo, and Super Nintendo games to my collection. I just bought Splatterhouse 3 and Turtles 3. Gonna be a fun weekend.

I don't know if I want to start collecting for it. I already have about 700+ games in my collection. All killer no filler. I don't know if I want to keep going. I sometimes have thoughts about selling everything and only keep my original NES stuff. My original plan was to only collect for NES and have an epic collection for it. But then my desires grew.
@@Orbinater86 Yeah dude that shit happens. The collection starts to balloon and stress you out, then you want to contract. My advice is to think of the whole thing as your hobby. You buy up a bunch, contract it down, then maybe buy up in a different direction, contract, etc. It's all fine if you are having fun. The collection and the playing are really separate things. For myself, every six months or so I go in a different hobby direction, I embrace it. Books. Music. Miniatures. Games. Sell. Remorse. Buy. hahah.
My "collection" is just a library of games that I have decided to buy with the intention of playing. I have a connection to nearly all of my games and I like it that way.
The games and systems I still have from growing up are the most special to me, and in close second are the systems and games I always wanted as a kid but never owned until I was an adult

The whole segment about suddenly being interested in genres you used to think you disliked is 100% correct. I used to think I hated shoot 'em ups, and essentially ruled out the possibility of me getting a TurboGrafx-16 because of it, however a couple months ago I thought about how I did like Galaga, even though that was a shoot 'em up game, which made me try some other good ones and I then realized I liked shoot 'em ups, I was just avoiding them! All of a sudden, I wanted a TurboGrafx-16.
For me, what makes a collection "complete" is that I own all of my absolute favorites. There will always be a few favorites remaining out of reach (cough LITTLE SAMSON cough), but with those, you just pretend they don't physically exist ;)
The nice thing about owning a thing is you can forget about wanting it any more. Get yourself a Virtual Boy and never look at another Virtual Boy auction again or waste any more time and energy wondering if you ought to bid on it, because you already have one. And if you never play it, well at least your mind will be free. My collection is already too big, but you know I don't actually have a copy of Rocket Knight Adventures so can I really go to my grave with pride? Certainly not if I end up buried next to Retro Bird; it will be a cold grave of shame.
Retrobird- QUICK little story for ya! My copy of Super Mario RPG is the most meaningful thing in my collection. Long story short, I got hit by a car - on my bike ride home, after getting it from EB games. The game (and I) both survived the crash. As for the bike I was on, and my helmet - were destroyed. When I got home from the ER - I was freaking out that my game was broken or lost in the crash somehow (it was in my back pocket at the time of impact), but my mom brought it to my room after I woke up the next morning. I was 12, with a broken leg, and played the game for the next week straight while NOT at school. I was 12 (29 now), and it’s one of the only games I kept from my childhood, before getting back into retro gaming years later. Sure, I have more expensive and rare games now…. But this one has that history behind it. I’ll never run out of new games to play, or add to my collection, because there’s always new ones to discover and try. but I’ll never get rid of this cartridge. To this day, I still play it once a year.
3:15 I'm 15, and I play retro games as often as modern games. Both are great types of games in their own ways. retro games are awesome! (I mean, I'm watching your channel, so it's obvious I think that)
For the longest time, I looked at my DS collection and thought "one day, I will reach one hundred games for this system". Well, guess what: it took me something like 18 years, but this year, I achieved that goal! Nr 100 was Pokemon Black 2. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself.
Got a Japanese Nomad that charges instead of batteries, but only plays Japanese Sega Games. Got a Japanese 600 in 1 Cartridge for it...done collecting Sega. PS it does have Rocket Knight Adventures in it as well. Just found out the Wii can play Nintendo Game Cube games. My son's Wii he never plays is in our attic, going to claim as my own. Got Game Cube games to collect & play now. As long as I can still play video games, I will never stop collecting.
I don’t have any complete collections, but what I did complete is getting back every console I’ve ever had growing up and almost all of the games and accessories I once had. It all started with the nostalgic finding of my busted Atari Jaguar with no controller. My mom bought me Doom and a controller for the Jag my birthday five years ago. Then I found how to fix it, learned to solder, and replaced the busted parts and got my system back in action. Best feeling ever! It exploded from there. Awesome video, Bird!
I regret selling my boxed SNES and Genesis stuff but now I can enjoy those games and more in multiple ways, and it's really new games that get in the way. More of a player than collector, so it's all good.
One of the reasons why I started collecting "Everything" for all of my consoles was I didn't have enough time to play all the games but wanted them on the cheap. One thing that surprised me was when I have felt most content about any of my console collections. For example: I sold most of my almost complete n64 collection to help pay down my mortgage a few years back. I kept 30 games from it but sold the rest saying I would start the collecting for the n64 again. However, now I feel fairly content with where it is at and I am actually playing them now! I think just the fact of owning them at one point was enough to give contentment over that console.
One does not simply complete their collection, they always add to it. Whether it be games, accesories, strategy guides, tormented spirits...it's always growing. Thank you for the shoutout. I'm glad my videos are helping people at 2 AM in the morning.
As someone that just finished their game collecting after 5 years trust me, you don't want the collecting to last forever because you will run out of space or have more games than you will ever be able to play. It's very important to set an end goal and be done collecting once you've reached it.
When you're getting ready to move and dread having to pack up and ship off all your stuff, that's when I start to wonder "hmmmmmm, maybe my collection is MORE than complete."
Yeah, you wanna keep your collection as small as possible but also as impressive as possible. It's a challenge and most people just hold on to every game they buy which is a fair way to collect for sure but hard to maintain.
My favorite game in the collection is the OG Dragon Warrior for the NES. My mom and I played it together when I was a kid. First game we ever beat! I owe a lot of my love for video games to my mom and us rocking some of the early puzzle game together too, like Dr. Mario and Tetris.

The problem is that it doesn't even really end with the games. I used to love the posters that came in Nintendo Power when I was a kid, but I ruined most of them by tearing them out roughly, attaching them to my walls with tape and not storing them neatly when they weren't on display. I'd love to run into somebody selling those in great condition at a convention sometime.

I got into poster collecting a few years ago,they're so easy to damage from getting creased you have to be super careful unrolling them and putting them up. The really good promotional ones typically cost way too much.
I got priced out of recollecting PS3, sold my collection in 2019 because I really needed the money. I got like $7 for games like Puppeteer and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots CE that are now worth $60 / $90 respectively

As of this weekend at a gaming convention, I can now join you in beaming with pride as the owner of a complete copy of Rocket Knight Adventures. For me, my collection of shoot em up games is the cherry on top of my overall collection. Part of that is having been smart enough to buy a lot of them early on, while they were still cheap, and part of it is just my love of the genre.

Nice. I've never played Mega Man 5, 6, or 7 yet. As a kid we owned 1, 3, and 4 CIB. I kept telling my Dad there was more than 4 Mega Man games, we didn't even own Mega Man 2 for some reason. When we got Mega Man X a few years later, I was like: "See Dad, they're already on Mega Man 10 ! We need to play the other ones." 😂
I'm not really a collector as I've learned I don't always even play the games I collect. It used to be collecting for the sake of collecting which gave me less time to actually enjoy _playing_ a game. I realize I can't play everything, so I usually ask myself before a purchase: "Will I actually play this game soon?" If the answer is "yes" then I consider picking it up. This never was an issue as a kid as I rarely got games, so the games I owned were more valuable to me. Also, there were way less games to actually choose from in the 80s and early 90s (compared to today), so it made choosing games to add to my collection a whole lot easier! 😅
Cannot say that it's complete, as you mentioned in the video, I've been one of those selling off entire collection multiple times and instantly regretting. What makes me feel good about my current collection though, that will not be sold, is that I have most of the best games I remember from growing up playing round friends, myself or relatives + arcades.
Always will be my Sega Saturn JPN collection. Part of me always feels like I could just focus on that and I’d be happy forever…then a VHS special edition of shredder’s revenge shows up and Bam! That log analogy my dude…hit home hard.
I think my collection is now finally getting to the point where I have all of the things i want. I mostly collect for games and game collections that i know i've enjoyed, and felt comfortable picking up without being completely priced out of my level. I've also had no problem buying repros of those same games that i knew are outside of that comfort zone, or other means of playing them. I love your videos, Retro Bird. Keep up the great work!
Man your videos are so addicting, it's almost 4 am and I cant stop, why must you be so relatable! Lol I also love your use of humor throughout your vids! Keep it up! I'll be here even if I'm the only person. But I would like to think I'm one of many who are thinking the same thing right now!
In one way I have completed my so called "childhood games" collection. With emulation it has become even easier. Gladly my ambitions for collecting the whole collection of a console has faded away. Although I have to give kudos to some people who do these complete collections, because they are the ones who are part of preservation games. Without them, even emulating wouldn't be able. On the other hand people who fall into an unhealthy collecting habit, told me, after they finished a collection they've described themselves as feeling empty. I still have some goals but my top one passion, music, took me more into collecting and trying out weird or unknown music instruments.
My sega Saturn collection is my first the System I started collecting for so it’s got be my favorite and got me started down this rabbit hole. Great video man
My game collection isn't particularly large, roughly 100 games across several consoles, and i love it. I only occasionally add to my collection games that i've played on an emulator beforehand to see if i enjoy the game, if i do and i want to continue playing the game then i'll think about adding it to my collection. It will never be complete as such, though in my heart and mind i'm very happy with what i have. Excellent video, thanks for this 👍
My game collection is around 20 games I think. I haven't counted but I did part with a few gems recently. Tiny collections are easy to maintain but it's painful when you have to swap a game out for a different one. I like it though because I could totally pack up my whole collection if I wanted to go on a vacation or something. IDK I don't travel.
Born in '83, grew up w/ NES & genesis, i have both systems with everdrives and ALL games(roms) for both. Happiness. I wish i could time travel and show my younger self this technology.
I think the feeling of completeness has layers for me. First and foremost, I want to have all the games I had as a kid and grew up playing, which isn’t a huge number. Then I’ll move on to the games I wished I had as a kid. After that, I’ll just happily collect games that look interesting and that I hear others highly recommend (in certain genres anyway). It’s important to me to actually play the games I collect, so my collection will never be huge. And that’s honestly a relief, because this can be an expensive hobby and I’m never going to devote a lot of money to it. I’m raising three kids, after all! Thanks for another fun video Retro Bird!
I had to sell a large chunk of my collection recently. I realized there are untouchables, and they all come from my childhood. The nes, snes, and genesis I will never sell, even if the games are bad.

Will collection ever be finished? no because if a friend gave me stuff I would take it. Am I done spending money on collecting with the current prices? Yes. Grateful to have built up a nice collection over the last 8 years, adding back lots of titles I enjoyed as a kid and regretted selling. Im sure ill be done collecting at some point, but i like to look at specific collection goals rather than my total collection. Plus I play both new and old games so itll probably be never done

Virtual boy is a strange item for me. Every time I see one at someone's home it stays in the corner like a decorational flower pot. Never used, and don't bother to ask for little test play because - " I don't know where cart/ac adapter/joypad are". Completely decorational item to show "you're loaded" as they are expensive here in Warsaw.
I used to have ambitions of having a wall(s) of games like you often see youtubers have. But now I’m content with the methodical collecting I’ve been doing. Prioritizing childhood games, and collecting essential (to me) games for essential consoles I’ve gotten. It’s freeing!
One thing I've recently picked up was Celeste Collectors Edition for the switch. The game lives up to the hype for sure, but what made me care for it more than many other things is the in game mountain is based on a real Mount Celeste only 2 hours away from where I live. Page 26 of the manual actually has a little picture of a map and my neighborhood is on it. You don't see too many things set in Canada.
That's one game I've had my eye on and it's a shame that I passed on pre-ordering it when I had the chance. I have a digital copy but it's not the same. Oh, and it's cool that the game's mountain is based on a mountain in Canada because I live in Canada too!
At 69 I still don’t have all the games I want but I probably have all the games I need. I need to stop buying collectors editions as I have no more room but what’s a gamer to do? @@tonyp9313 I was one year out of high school when the original magnavox odyssey released. It was weird because the only way to check one out was to go to an authorized magnavox dealer. I remember being unimpressed. My first console was an Atari pong system.
I don't really plan to ever be done collecting or ever be able to afford some of the systems and games I would like to own. My favorite part of my collection is having the famicom versions of Castlevania 1-4. It was after all Castlevania that made me become passionate about the hobby. Great video again sir! That Avenue 6 pad is a sure giveaway you’re playing the PC Engine version of Street Fighter II C.E. Love that GamePad and game. Been collecting since 89 and just when I think I have all that I need to collect for my Sega Genesis I discover more games that spark my interest that I didn’t know existed. Perhaps I haven’t been dedicated enough to complete my collection, regardless I still enjoy it to this day.

The thing that's always made my collection "complete" to me is my original SNES I got for my 6th Birthday. It's moved with me multiple times, gone on road trips & even shared a bottle of Tequila (not a joke, still works!). While I've recently struggled between playing some modern games with friends & beating retro games I want to beat for myself (lowsy modern games having a good streak recently) I do know my interest in modern games seems to be waning. That could change, but for now I just need to find a way to quit my pesky job so I can focus on playing games.
Probably. I've actually been trimming down my collection, to only games that I really enjoy and would absolutely play again. I've spent a lot of time thinking about what I want my collection to be, and I just don't want to have games for the sake of having them. The best part, is that I can sell off some games I don't really care for, and put that towards the more expensive ones I do really like. Plus, a bit of downsizing is always good. Also, that was a legendary opening to the video, hehe.
I always say to people that want to start a collection, that they should ideally enjoy the process of collecting itself, otherwise they would get discouraged or stressed out. And I really enjoy it, going to retro game stores and flee markets, hunting for the best prices. So in truth I collect not only because I like playing the games or find them interesting, but also because I enjoy the act of collecting itself. So really my collection will be complete when the day comes that I am bored of the activity or something like that I don't have enough room or money, and even then, there is always smaller and cheaper games.
Full PAL Dreamcast collection + US exclusives + a decent collection of JP exclusives is what made me feel like my active collecting days are over. Now I'm just an opportunity buyer. Cheap stuff on flea markets, secondhand shops, Marketplace. Rarely do I look for a specific game anymore. The realization that I'm 44 and I will never be able to complete every game in my collection unless I manage to get +300 years old is another factor that made me feel like my collection is complete, or at the very least complete enough...
Great video, I love your sense of humor and positivity. One of the main reasons I bought a PSP was because Hot Shots Golf Open Tee 1&2 aren't available anywhere else. I own the complete North American line up of Hot Shots Golf games and that makes me very happy, even if I just stare at them. In fact, World Invitational is one of only four Vita cartridges I own. Right now I am slowly deciding which OG Xbox exclusive games that aren't able to be played on 360 or subsequent systems are "worth" collecting, Sudeki anyone?
I think for me having all my favorite games for each console I own plus at least a handful of other good titles to mix things up helps me to feel like it's been complete for a long time now. Of course that will never stop me from looking for or buying new games every once in a while, because it's the fun of discovery that keeps things interesting. Also, it can be hard to resist when there are games you love available in other fun formats (pretty much anything ported to the Switch!)
For each console I own, I just ended up making a list of what I wanted, then bought them. The only reason I did that was to have them to play since the prices were going up. Only have one console left and I'm done.
For the most part I'm at that point where collecting for my retro systems is complete, but there is always new stuff coming out that interests me. Nintendo Switch has been something of a renaissance and I've amassed a huge selection of games which dwarfs the rest of my collections combined. I also just jumped on the Evercade bandwagon where I see a lot of potential for the future.
I just bought the Klonoa games for the OG PS1 and PS2 because the remaster one made me like those two, I finally got the games I targeted for Tomba , Tobal , Valkyrie profile even though they're Japanese imports I count them. Now I am slowing down on buying more games ,because I have a back catalog to work on not mention keeping count on the list I have of every game on each console
@@MaryTownsendRyokansDomain Oh, I can definitely relate! I have a platinum GameBoy Advance SP and I have Strawberry Shortcake Summer Adventure, Strawberry Shortcake GBA Video, Hamtaro Ham-Hams Unite, and a Limited Run copy of Shantae. Playing those on the GBA SP just feels right!
I started collecting for the 3ds. I have about 20 games and enjoy ever one, still working on playing them though. Since the prices went crazy I went back to a console I own... the PS3. It is rising in price but am amazing on all the great titles I did not try, I am making up for missing out but I almost finished my personal wish list. Collecting games is like collecting anything. Look at Billionaires, they love to collect money, when you see them you ask, 'how much is enough?' and with that question you have to ask that too with collecting games.
Owning every game ever made sounds impressive on paper but just isn't doable. However, that doesn't stop people from trying! Gotta love the dedication.
The history of games is just too rich. I own a raspberry pi 4 just so I can try out a bunch of games before purchasing on original hardware. I’m constantly finding gems that I eventually find in the wild.

My interest in collecting and even playing games comes and goes throught the year. Its usually at its peak in winter when I've got nothing else to do. My recent philosophy is to buy an old EGM or Gamepro magazine from back in the day and look for ads for a game that I remember seeing but never owned. I then track that game down.
I am working on my PS2 collection because it was the console I never got as a child and desired the most, and when I think I got all the games I wanted I stumble into something new, I finally gave a shot to watch Ghost in the Shell and the algorithm blessed me with an old CGR review of Stand Alone Complex on PS2 and I always found ironice Mark saying how those games are so affordable but when I go to eBay they're are as a expensive as a new game and man I feel like I know what I have to do but I don't know if I have the strenght to do so, but guess I'll just keep on hunting.

Then I went crazy and decided to collect every good game for every good retro console lol now I have 1500 games.
Big fat nope. I don't have much of a collection outside of ROMs and emulators. I've grown pretty accustomed to downloading what I want, when I want, firing up the game on my PC, and tinkering with the settings in order to make the game look its best and perform its best (for my hardware). I've done this to maaany many games already, and the more I do it, the less I desire owning real retro consoles. It means a lot to me to see console-only games looking and running far better on modern PC hardware than on their respective systems. I find it fascinating. As for my goals... umm.. keep doing what I'm doing and be happy :D

Complete Black Box collection, many with manuals and the 5 screw circle seal variants. Duck Tales 2, Fire & Ice, Lolo and Adventure Island trilogies (and a self-made Adventure Island 4 English port), all the NES games that were on Atari, and vice-versa (including a self-made Princess Rescue), and most of the affordable 7800 games. Oh, and an Everdrive N8 Pro and a Harmony cart. Oh, and all the Nintendo Famicom Pulse line carts and their image variants. Oh, and the Namcot 18... ...there's always a new dragon to chase...
man i ask myself this question all the time. ive tried establishing subsets of things, just games from one publisher, complete system sets, but it feels like the eventual end point looks like wanting to flesh out a complete nintendo collection even though its wildly unobtainable. brb, going to buy super black bass 2
I feel like I have all the games I need but that doesn't mean I will ever stop wanting new things. I try to focus on what I have and just be happy if new things get added, without to many expectations. Rather than focus on the collecting/hunting aspect and never feel content with the things I acquired in the past. But it is a constant balancing act and there are still times when I get lost in the needy feeling of getting something "before it's too late".
Collecting will not end for me. Too many new games and the joy of the hunt for the older ones. I do enjoy looking at my collection and randomly pick out a game to go through the manual and maybe even pop in a play for a few for a lark.

I don't know if I want to start collecting for it. I already have about 700+ games in my collection. All killer no filler. I don't know if I want to keep going. I sometimes have thoughts about selling everything and only keep my original NES stuff. My original plan was to only collect for NES and have an epic collection for it. But then my desires grew.
@@Orbinater86 Yeah dude that shit happens. The collection starts to balloon and stress you out, then you want to contract. My advice is to think of the whole thing as your hobby. You buy up a bunch, contract it down, then maybe buy up in a different direction, contract, etc. It's all fine if you are having fun. The collection and the playing are really separate things. For myself, every six months or so I go in a different hobby direction, I embrace it. Books. Music. Miniatures. Games. Sell. Remorse. Buy. hahah.

My "collection" is just a library of games that I have decided to buy with the intention of playing. I have a connection to nearly all of my games and I like it that way.
The games and systems I still have from growing up are the most special to me, and in close second are the systems and games I always wanted as a kid but never owned until I was an adult

The whole segment about suddenly being interested in genres you used to think you disliked is 100% correct. I used to think I hated shoot 'em ups, and essentially ruled out the possibility of me getting a TurboGrafx-16 because of it, however a couple months ago I thought about how I did like Galaga, even though that was a shoot 'em up game, which made me try some other good ones and I then realized I liked shoot 'em ups, I was just avoiding them! All of a sudden, I wanted a TurboGrafx-16.
Some things just aren't meant to be completed. The thing that completes it for me is just remembereing how I recieved them all.

You need a CRT tv to play non hd consoles. Why? Cuz you'll notice a huge difference with 0 lag when you do play non hd consoles on the CRT tv.

For me, what makes a collection "complete" is that I own all of my absolute favorites. There will always be a few favorites remaining out of reach (cough LITTLE SAMSON cough), but with those, you just pretend they don't physically exist ;)
The nice thing about owning a thing is you can forget about wanting it any more. Get yourself a Virtual Boy and never look at another Virtual Boy auction again or waste any more time and energy wondering if you ought to bid on it, because you already have one. And if you never play it, well at least your mind will be free.
My collection is already too big, but you know I don't actually have a copy of Rocket Knight Adventures so can I really go to my grave with pride? Certainly not if I end up buried next to Retro Bird; it will be a cold grave of shame.
Retrobird- QUICK little story for ya! My copy of Super Mario RPG is the most meaningful thing in my collection. Long story short, I got hit by a car - on my bike ride home, after getting it from EB games. The game (and I) both survived the crash. As for the bike I was on, and my helmet - were destroyed. When I got home from the ER - I was freaking out that my game was broken or lost in the crash somehow (it was in my back pocket at the time of impact), but my mom brought it to my room after I woke up the next morning. I was 12, with a broken leg, and played the game for the next week straight while NOT at school. I was 12 (29 now), and it’s one of the only games I kept from my childhood, before getting back into retro gaming years later. Sure, I have more expensive and rare games now…. But this one has that history behind it. I’ll never run out of new games to play, or add to my collection, because there’s always new ones to discover and try. but I’ll never get rid of this cartridge. To this day, I still play it once a year.

For the longest time, I looked at my DS collection and thought "one day, I will reach one hundred games for this system". Well, guess what: it took me something like 18 years, but this year, I achieved that goal! Nr 100 was Pokemon Black 2. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself.
I sold Black 2. Pretty much all the pokemon games my ex bought me I sold off. Never liked pokemon, I'm just too old for it.
Got a Japanese Nomad that charges instead of batteries, but only plays Japanese Sega Games. Got a Japanese 600 in 1 Cartridge for it...done collecting Sega.
PS it does have Rocket Knight Adventures in it as well. Just found out the Wii can play Nintendo Game Cube games. My son's Wii he never plays is in our attic, going to claim as my own.

I don’t have any complete collections, but what I did complete is getting back every console I’ve ever had growing up and almost all of the games and accessories I once had. It all started with the nostalgic finding of my busted Atari Jaguar with no controller. My mom bought me Doom and a controller for the Jag my birthday five years ago. Then I found how to fix it, learned to solder, and replaced the busted parts and got my system back in action. Best feeling ever! It exploded from there. Awesome video, Bird!
I regret selling my boxed SNES and Genesis stuff but now I can enjoy those games and more in multiple ways, and it's really new games that get in the way.
More of a player than collector, so it's all good.
One of the reasons why I started collecting "Everything" for all of my consoles was I didn't have enough time to play all the games but wanted them on the cheap. One thing that surprised me was when I have felt most content about any of my console collections. For example: I sold most of my almost complete n64 collection to help pay down my mortgage a few years back. I kept 30 games from it but sold the rest saying I would start the collecting for the n64 again. However, now I feel fairly content with where it is at and I am actually playing them now! I think just the fact of owning them at one point was enough to give contentment over that console.
One does not simply complete their collection, they always add to it. Whether it be games, accesories, strategy guides, tormented spirits...it's always growing.

As someone that just finished their game collecting after 5 years trust me, you don't want the collecting to last forever because you will run out of space or have more games than you will ever be able to play. It's very important to set an end goal and be done collecting once you've reached it.

When you're getting ready to move and dread having to pack up and ship off all your stuff, that's when I start to wonder "hmmmmmm, maybe my collection is MORE than complete."
Yeah, you wanna keep your collection as small as possible but also as impressive as possible. It's a challenge and most people just hold on to every game they buy which is a fair way to collect for sure but hard to maintain.
That can really put things into perspective!
My favorite game in the collection is the OG Dragon Warrior for the NES.

The problem is that it doesn't even really end with the games. I used to love the posters that came in Nintendo Power when I was a kid, but I ruined most of them by tearing them out roughly, attaching them to my walls with tape and not storing them neatly when they weren't on display. I'd love to run into somebody selling those in great condition at a convention sometime.
I hear you. I have been wanting to try find some of my favourite issues of videogame magazines I collected in the 90s, however shipping prices out them just about out of reach.
I got into poster collecting a few years ago,they're so easy to damage from getting creased you have to be super careful unrolling them and putting them up. The really good promotional ones typically cost way too much.
I got priced out of recollecting PS3, sold my collection in 2019 because I really needed the money. I got like $7 for games like Puppeteer and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots CE that are now worth $60 / $90 respectively
I paid $5 for Witch's Wish on the DS because it was missing the manual so we're both in the same boat there. I just gotta get that manual someday.

As of this weekend at a gaming convention, I can now join you in beaming with pride as the owner of a complete copy of Rocket Knight Adventures. For me, my collection of shoot em up games is the cherry on top of my overall collection. Part of that is having been smart enough to buy a lot of them early on, while they were still cheap, and part of it is just my love of the genre.
Thank you for reminding us to appreciate what we have. Some of us tend to get thrilled by adding to a never-ending “list” and forget to just enjoy everything

As a kid we owned 1, 3, and 4 CIB. I kept telling my Dad there was more than 4 Mega Man games, we didn't even own Mega Man 2 for some reason.
When we got Mega Man X a few years later, I was like: "See Dad, they're already on Mega Man 10 ! We need to play the other ones." 😂
I'm not really a collector as I've learned I don't always even play the games I collect. It used to be collecting for the sake of collecting which gave me less time to actually enjoy _playing_ a game. I realize I can't play everything, so I usually ask myself before a purchase: "Will I actually play this game soon?" If the answer is "yes" then I consider picking it up.
This never was an issue as a kid as I rarely got games, so the games I owned were more valuable to me. Also, there were way less games to actually choose from in the 80s and early 90s (compared to today), so it made choosing games to add to my collection a whole lot easier! 😅
Cannot say that it's complete, as you mentioned in the video, I've been one of those selling off entire collection multiple times and instantly regretting. What makes me feel good about my current collection though, that will not be sold, is that I have most of the best games I remember from growing up playing round friends, myself or relatives + arcades.

I think my collection is now finally getting to the point where I have all of the things i want. I mostly collect for games and game collections that i know i've enjoyed, and felt comfortable picking up without being completely priced out of my level. I've also had no problem buying repros of those same games that i knew are outside of that comfort zone, or other means of playing them.

In one way I have completed my so called "childhood games" collection. With emulation it has become even easier.
Gladly my ambitions for collecting the whole collection of a console has faded away.
Although I have to give kudos to some people who do these complete collections, because they are the ones who are part of preservation games. Without them, even emulating wouldn't be able. On the other hand people who fall into an unhealthy collecting habit, told me, after they finished a collection they've described themselves as feeling empty.
I still have some goals but my top one passion, music, took me more into collecting and trying out weird or unknown music instruments.
My sega Saturn collection is my first the System I started collecting for so it’s got be my favorite and got me started down this rabbit hole. Great video man
My game collection isn't particularly large, roughly 100 games across several consoles, and i love it.
I only occasionally add to my collection games that i've played on an emulator beforehand to see if i enjoy the game, if i do and i want to continue playing the game then i'll think about adding it to my collection.
It will never be complete as such, though in my heart and mind i'm very happy with what i have.

My game collection is around 20 games I think. I haven't counted but I did part with a few gems recently. Tiny collections are easy to maintain but it's painful when you have to swap a game out for a different one. I like it though because I could totally pack up my whole collection if I wanted to go on a vacation or something. IDK I don't travel.

Born in '83, grew up w/ NES & genesis, i have both systems with everdrives and ALL games(roms) for both. Happiness. I wish i could time travel and show my younger self this technology.
I think the feeling of completeness has layers for me. First and foremost, I want to have all the games I had as a kid and grew up playing, which isn’t a huge number. Then I’ll move on to the games I wished I had as a kid. After that, I’ll just happily collect games that look interesting and that I hear others highly recommend (in certain genres anyway). It’s important to me to actually play the games I collect, so my collection will never be huge. And that’s honestly a relief, because this can be an expensive hobby and I’m never going to devote a lot of money to it. I’m raising three kids, after all! Thanks for another fun video Retro Bird!
I had to sell a large chunk of my collection recently. I realized there are untouchables, and they all come from my childhood. The nes, snes, and genesis I will never sell, even if the games are bad.
Buckio Hare!! Boy, that brought me back to my child hood. My sister had it on her NES when I was too young to even realize the jewel it was. To have a copy now would be amazing.
Will collection ever be finished? no because if a friend gave me stuff I would take it. Am I done spending money on collecting with the current prices? Yes.
Grateful to have built up a nice collection over the last 8 years, adding back lots of titles I enjoyed as a kid and regretted selling.

I used to have ambitions of having a wall(s) of games like you often see youtubers have. But now I’m content with the methodical collecting I’ve been doing. Prioritizing childhood games, and collecting essential (to me) games for essential consoles I’ve gotten. It’s freeing!
One thing I've recently picked up was Celeste Collectors Edition for the switch. The game lives up to the hype for sure, but what made me care for it more than many other things is the in game mountain is based on a real Mount Celeste only 2 hours away from where I live. Page 26 of the manual actually has a little picture of a map and my neighborhood is on it. You don't see too many things set in Canada.
That's one game I've had my eye on and it's a shame that I passed on pre-ordering it when I had the chance. I have a digital copy but it's not the same. Oh, and it's cool that the game's mountain is based on a mountain in Canada because I live in Canada too!

@@tonyp9313 I was one year out of high school when the original magnavox odyssey released. It was weird because the only way to check one out was to go to an authorized magnavox dealer. I remember being unimpressed. My first console was an Atari pong system.

I don't really plan to ever be done collecting or ever be able to afford some of the systems and games I would like to own. My favorite part of my collection is having the famicom versions of Castlevania 1-4. It was after all Castlevania that made me become passionate about the hobby. Great video again sir! That Avenue 6 pad is a sure giveaway you’re playing the PC Engine version of Street Fighter II C.E. Love that GamePad and game. Been collecting since 89 and just when I think I have all that I need to collect for my Sega Genesis I discover more games that spark my interest that I didn’t know existed. Perhaps I haven’t been dedicated enough to complete my collection, regardless I still enjoy it to this day.

The thing that's always made my collection "complete" to me is my original SNES I got for my 6th Birthday. It's moved with me multiple times, gone on road trips & even shared a bottle of Tequila (not a joke, still works!).
While I've recently struggled between playing some modern games with friends & beating retro games I want to beat for myself (lowsy modern games having a good streak recently) I do know my interest in modern games seems to be waning. That could change, but for now I just need to find a way to quit my pesky job so I can focus on playing games.
Probably. I've actually been trimming down my collection, to only games that I really enjoy and would absolutely play again. I've spent a lot of time thinking about what I want my collection to be, and I just don't want to have games for the sake of having them.
The best part, is that I can sell off some games I don't really care for, and put that towards the more expensive ones I do really like. Plus, a bit of downsizing is always good.

I'm all about consolidation. Sure, not everyone will want to do it... but I think it's a great option for some. And glad you liked the opening :)
I always say to people that want to start a collection, that they should ideally enjoy the process of collecting itself, otherwise they would get discouraged or stressed out.
And I really enjoy it, going to retro game stores and flee markets, hunting for the best prices. So in truth I collect not only because I like playing the games or find them interesting, but also because I enjoy the act of collecting itself. So really my collection will be complete when the day comes that I am bored of the activity or something like that I don't have enough room or money, and even then, there is always smaller and cheaper games.
Full PAL Dreamcast collection + US exclusives + a decent collection of JP exclusives is what made me feel like my active collecting days are over. Now I'm just an opportunity buyer. Cheap stuff on flea markets, secondhand shops, Marketplace. Rarely do I look for a specific game anymore. The realization that I'm 44 and I will never be able to complete every game in my collection unless I manage to get +300 years old is another factor that made me feel like my collection is complete, or at the very least complete enough...
Great video, I love your sense of humor and positivity. One of the main reasons I bought a PSP was because Hot Shots Golf Open Tee 1&2 aren't available anywhere else. I own the complete North American line up of Hot Shots Golf games and that makes me very happy, even if I just stare at them. In fact, World Invitational is one of only four Vita cartridges I own. Right now I am slowly deciding which OG Xbox exclusive games that aren't able to be played on 360 or subsequent systems are "worth" collecting, Sudeki anyone?
I think for me having all my favorite games for each console I own plus at least a handful of other good titles to mix things up helps me to feel like it's been complete for a long time now. Of course that will never stop me from looking for or buying new games every once in a while, because it's the fun of discovery that keeps things interesting. Also, it can be hard to resist when there are games you love available in other fun formats (pretty much anything ported to the Switch!)
For each console I own, I just ended up making a list of what I wanted, then bought them. The only reason I did that was to have them to play since the prices were going up. Only have one console left and I'm done.

For the most part I'm at that point where collecting for my retro systems is complete, but there is always new stuff coming out that interests me. Nintendo Switch has been something of a renaissance and I've amassed a huge selection of games which dwarfs the rest of my collections combined. I also just jumped on the Evercade bandwagon where I see a lot of potential for the future.
I just bought the Klonoa games for the OG PS1 and PS2 because the remaster one made me like those two, I finally got the games I targeted for Tomba , Tobal , Valkyrie profile even though they're Japanese imports I count them. Now I am slowing down on buying more games ,because I have a back catalog to work on not mention keeping count on the list I have of every game on each console
I got the Pal version of Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series for the Nintendo Switch and it's a good port! Hopefully they'll make a new Klonoa game.

@@MaryTownsendRyokansDomain Oh, I can definitely relate! I have a platinum GameBoy Advance SP and I have Strawberry Shortcake Summer Adventure, Strawberry Shortcake GBA Video, Hamtaro Ham-Hams Unite, and a Limited Run copy of Shantae. Playing those on the GBA SP just feels right!
The Japanese imports are a great option for the Klonoa games. That is what I did!

I started collecting for the 3ds. I have about 20 games and enjoy ever one, still working on playing them though. Since the prices went crazy I went back to a console I own... the PS3. It is rising in price but am amazing on all the great titles I did not try, I am making up for missing out but I almost finished my personal wish list.
Collecting games is like collecting anything. Look at Billionaires, they love to collect money, when you see them you ask, 'how much is enough?' and with that question you have to ask that too with collecting games.
Owning every game ever made sounds impressive on paper but just isn't doable. However, that doesn't stop people from trying! Gotta love the dedication.

The history of games is just too rich. I own a raspberry pi 4 just so I can try out a bunch of games before purchasing on original hardware. I’m constantly finding gems that I eventually find in the wild.

My interest in collecting and even playing games comes and goes throught the year. Its usually at its peak in winter when I've got nothing else to do. My recent philosophy is to buy an old EGM or Gamepro magazine from back in the day and look for ads for a game that I remember seeing but never owned. I then track that game down.

I am working on my PS2 collection because it was the console I never got as a child and desired the most, and when I think I got all the games I wanted I stumble into something new, I finally gave a shot to watch Ghost in the Shell and the algorithm blessed me with an old CGR review of Stand Alone Complex on PS2 and I always found ironice Mark saying how those games are so affordable but when I go to eBay they're are as a expensive as a new game and man I feel like I know what I have to do but I don't know if I have the strenght to do so, but guess I'll just keep on hunting.

My tastes have changed so much the more I get deeper into retro and realizing what genres were famous at the times. Dude I started just digitally collecting some of my childhood games that I owned. Then I went crazy and decided to collect every good game for every good retro console lol now I have 1500 games.
Big fat nope. I don't have much of a collection outside of ROMs and emulators. I've grown pretty accustomed to downloading what I want, when I want, firing up the game on my PC, and tinkering with the settings in order to make the game look its best and perform its best (for my hardware). I've done this to maaany many games already, and the more I do it, the less I desire owning real retro consoles. It means a lot to me to see console-only games looking and running far better on modern PC hardware than on their respective systems. I find it fascinating. As for my goals... umm.. keep doing what I'm doing and be happy :D

Complete Black Box collection, many with manuals and the 5 screw circle seal variants.
Duck Tales 2, Fire & Ice, Lolo and Adventure Island trilogies (and a self-made Adventure Island 4 English port), all the NES games that were on Atari, and vice-versa (including a self-made Princess Rescue), and most of the affordable 7800 games.
Oh, and an Everdrive N8 Pro and a Harmony cart.
Oh, and all the Nintendo Famicom Pulse line carts and their image variants.
Oh, and the Namcot 18...

man i ask myself this question all the time. ive tried establishing subsets of things, just games from one publisher, complete system sets, but it feels like the eventual end point looks like wanting to flesh out a complete nintendo collection even though its wildly unobtainable.

I feel like I have all the games I need but that doesn't mean I will ever stop wanting new things. I try to focus on what I have and just be happy if new things get added, without to many expectations. Rather than focus on the collecting/hunting aspect and never feel content with the things I acquired in the past. But it is a constant balancing act and there are still times when I get lost in the needy feeling of getting something "before it's too late".

Collecting will not end for me. Too many new games and the joy of the hunt for the older ones.
I do enjoy looking at my collection and randomly pick out a game to go through the manual and maybe even pop in a play for a few for a lark.
I'm 2 years older than you, but you feel like the big brother I needed growing up!
