Cleaner airfoil profile, and political reasons. The State wouldn't allow wing-mounted engines because it wasn't considered an indigenous Soviet design. Ilyushin eventually found a loophole when they built the Il-86 but before then, It was in the wing or up in the back. Also, the Il-62 has a rear tail-wheel that helps balance the aircraft while on the ground.
I had a friend who worked at an airport who used to tell me about "dumb Commie pilots in their Ilyushins." Apparently, they would land the planes hard and flatten a couple of landing gear tires. Flight controls were hydraulic/mechanical, not fly by wire. Wresting this huge airliner, the world's largest serial production airliner till the 747, required a strong pilot. IL-62s were typically given straight in approaches. Flying approaches based on published IFR approach profiles was normally deemed way too much of a workout for IL-62 pilots.
Yeah, what a beautiful piece of engineering... Indeed, especially crashed into pieces, killing everyone on the board, because of low production quality standards in the factory + placing all the engines next to each other is brilliant - when one explodes, it destroys also the rest of them. What a machine...
Still, is there any other country that is commercially flying the plane other than North Korea?

VC-10 is a wonderful airliner I love it very much, but IL-62 is better in many aspects including aerodynamic. Although VC-10 used to have a better avionics..
VC-10 transported 150 passengers on distance of 6 275 km. IL-62M transported 186 passengers on distance of 11 050 km. For all the time of operation ~7,5% of VC-10 airplanes have been lost. For all the time of operation ~7,5% of IL-62 airplanes have been lost.
Except it's a fucking copy of the VC-10 just like most Soviet aircraft were copies of successful American and European aircraft. I hate Russian aviation with a passion
Richard F. Stripe The American aircrafts could not be an example for copying. The Russian aircrafts (both civil and militaries) simply surpasses the Americans in characteristics. So there could be no copying. The copy cannot be better than the original.

Why can I name at least ten aircraft off the top of my head that look almost *exactly* like other aircraft that came out after their counterparts? IL-62s were typically given straight in approaches. Flying approaches based on published IFR approach profiles was normally deemed way too much of a workout for IL-62 pilots.
Yeah, what a beautiful piece of engineering... Indeed, especially crashed into pieces, killing everyone on the board, because of low production quality standards in the factory + placing all the engines next to each other is brilliant - when one explodes, it destroys also the rest of them. What a machine...
Oh, those Russians...
Still, is there any other country that is commercially flying the plane other than North Korea?
Тем не менее, есть ли другая страна, которая коммерчески управляет самолетом, кроме Северной Кореи?
No.
Well designed airliner received a less-deserving reputation because of less adequate engines and two terrible crashes with LOT.

The IL-62 is too loud! Even in the inside
But it sounds just plane awesome
No, very quiet inside.
Neither aviaexport nor USSR anymore! Whom to communicate with for possible purchase business?🤔

they actually had an excellent safety record for their time.
@@daveZ4143- True, just 9 of the 300 built crashed, whereas 172 of the 900 707's built crashed and were hull loses. 83 of the 500 DC-8's built were hull loses.
The ones that were built flew A LOT. Great safety record, even for today!
I don't understand a single word lol
Love that Lockheed Electra what an Airplane 😂.
VC-10!!
Is a copy of the Il-62
Ahhhhh beautiful 70s music when only rich people took heroin
flying casket, many people died because of that soviet era engineering.
False. It had a great safety record compared to other aircraft, especially from the time.
Soviet engineering was one of the best in the world
they did it their way...
The airframe was really good looking but the aircraft itself was very faulty. It did kill many passengers and crew due to it’s poor quality ( 1972 Interflug, 1980 LOT Polish, 1987 LOT Polish and many others)
Looks suspiciously like the VC 10.
Plane without slats.but with aerodinamical teeth
It's a mattere of time and Russia will use this old airplanes again when it is completely hermetic isolated from the rest of the world.

Didn’t the commie Soviets just copy the VC-10 on this one?
You should read about the structure and technical characteristics. These planes have more differences than similarities, and they are similar only in appearance
This is some weird music.....

The Soviets had the nerve to steal the design from Vickers VC-10 , then call the Il-62 an original design . For me it speaks volumes of these crooks .
Even if they stole the design, the safety record of Il-62 was much better and the planes were of higher quality so I guess it is not a crime
Hi Oknelemes . Sorry for my gruff reply . I actually have a 1: 144 scale model of the II - 62 m . While i have seen way 2 many " coincidence's" between a Russian aircraft , and the Western Design Teams ,has made believe that the only thing the USSR and now Russia can do to advance their programs , is to steal other Nations reseach . I'm apologize for my position , but i believe for the most part , that i am correct . But thanks for your reply ........
@@dudleyrathborne9849 there are many design differences and proof of espionage was never found for example they would both differently balance centre of gravity
I'd rather have a VC-10.

Андрей Самодуров Then why does Russia have the worst aviation safety record of any other country? Why can I name at least ten aircraft off the top of my head that look almost *exactly* like other aircraft that came out after their counterparts? Not to mention the fact that many have already been proven as copies.
