Oh the days when flying was truly fun. Tridents, VC-10’s, DC8 & 9’s, 707’s, 747’s... almost every flight had a party in the rear, drinks flowed, one could smoke on board, cabin crew were friendly...

Yes, and every one of those guys has lung cancer. I shudder when I think of how much second hand smoke I was exposed to on those flights. Otherwise great, but smoking in a plane is just stupid.

Wow. That really took me back, I could smell the unburned Jet2. Helps memories of how exotic it was when BOAC and National Air Lines were both awarded the Miami to Heathrow non-stop in 1970. We rode our bikes all the way from South Miami to MIA just to watch the evening depatures. NAL served the route with a DC-8-50, but the highlight of the evening was the once-a-day BOAC 747 departure to London and Pan Am 747 to Rio and Buenos Aires. A special time, still seen watching the pm line-up of flag-carriers stacked up at the gates at JFK. Thanks for the awakening the whole memory cluster with this snippet. I'll be replaying it in my head the rest of the day.

      *InfiniteMushroom*
BOAC were just starting to buy Boeing 747s in 1970 and were more economical compared to the Super VC10 and Boeing 707, these aircrafts were fazed out gradually to make way for the new generation of wide bodied aircrafts. And the reason why the Ilyushin Il-62 was in service longer than the Super VC10 is because Russia keep their old junk aircrafts well past their sell-by-date (hence, why they have more aircraft crashes).

    • @user-ky6vw5up9m
      @user-ky6vw5up9m 5 лет назад +1

Yes indeed. It’s design was optimised to serve the British “colonial” routes and this helped to give irs rival, the Boeing 707 a commercial advantage.

T tail came with the “deep stall” risk. There was no real need for T tails on civil airliners.

Another example of the British airline industry restricting its sales by developing for a niche market (the Empire routes). In fact the VC10 was very well engineered and it was more profitable than the 707 in spite of its higher running costs. This was because passengers preferred it and consequently it flew with a higher percentage of seats filled.

January 2023 and came across this wonderful video again. Takes me back to the fantastic era of early 1970s, stood on either the Queen’s Building or top floor of car park 2, aircraft spotting with my mates. The constant aroma of jet fuel filled the air, along with the unmistakable and unforgettable sound of the Rolls Royce Conway engines of the VC-10, some 707s and DC-8s. 50 years on and I’d love to step back in time, just for one day to sample those delights once more ❤️

I feel so lucky to have grown up under final to JFK. Actually, a few miles south, so we always saw the arrivals as they flew in over North Long Island Sound. Everything that flew into JFK 1962 - 1972 I saw. The TWA 747 was the most beautiful thing. I'll never forget seeing it for the first time. Seeing this on video is one thing, but seeing these aircraft actually flying, the grace of their design is lost in two dimensional celluloid.

I flew on Tridents from 1966 to 1973, they were indeed an incredible aircraft; fully automatic takeoffs and landings (with of course the captains hands ghosting the control column; just in case) Also; Flying from LHR into cities just south of the Alps; Milan, Turin, Venice; the captain would (by arrangement and prior advice with the cabin crew) require the cabin was entirely cleared; and from cruising altitude; full dumps would be applied; together with reverse thrust, and yes; that very tough airframe shook energetically during what could only be described as a very exciting descent with the altimeter unwinding like a spring., That was flying :) not like the school bus type of flying we get today....

Looking back, it now seems like a “golden era” for enthusiasts at LHR but at the time it just seemed like the norm. How lucky we were to have had this free andeasily-accessible entertainment and an educational hobby as well.

Unfortunatley the Americans took the design and added better engines, trident was far to under powered.

Actually, you need to get your facts straight, it was BOAC and BEA that merged together to form British Airways (BA).

When I first went to 'London Airport' in 1959, there was a public enclosure on the grass quite close to the northern runway. It had swings and stuff for kiddies too. Also did a coach tour around the airport, getting close up to a lot of parked airliners (I remember a lot of Connies) and the BOAC and BEA maintenance areas. Very different times!

A bit late, I know, but yes, that's a Kuwait Airways Trident at the very start. My dad flew it for five years for KAC based in Beirut.

...ah, the VC-10 a total work of art. Lover BOAC 747s in the old Speedbird livery one of the classiest liveries ever. The British Airways scheme just looked wrong on a VC-10 whereas the BOAC one accentuated the aircraft's lines. Too bad there never was a Concorde in that livery.

Man , I'm not a big aviation guy but those BAE Tridents are so cool - I think they had an analogue computer auto-land - love to know how that worked . Shame that CVRs were not mandatory around this time - we might know what exactly happened at Staines . [ A lot of workplace environments could do with CRM ]

Soon after 9/11 when air travel dropped, airlines here reduced fleets, a lot of the remaining tri-jets: 727s, DC-10s and L10-11s.
