    At the beginning of medical school, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information I had to learn in a short amount of time. My normal note-taking strategy was taking too much time and I was falling behind. I needed to change my study strategy. What followed was an all-encompassing reworking of how I spent my time. The results? My grades went up and I studied less. How is that possible? In this video, I will show you how I take 0, notes in medical school now score better, and study less.

      @Presley Bohlmann agreed! I take a lot of notes to make sure I keep up with the lecture and don’t just space out and miss things during it, and I also make little diagrams/pictures and I word and organize the information a little bit differently. Also if the lecturer gives a hint that a specific topic is important and might be in the test it’s easy to mark it in the notes right away with a specific color and then maybe make practise questions or flashcards based on that after the lecture.

    Going to go against the current a bit here.
    I followed the advice in this video and my performance in med school actually declined. I immediately reverted back to my original learning process. I believe that learning happens in stages. The acquisition and synthesis of lecture content through taking notes/organizing the material prior to implementing active recall and spaced repetition through Anki(or any other program) is a necessary step in the learning process. I vehemently disagree with the idea of only watching a video then using Anki the rest of the time. You’re skipping the step in which you can organize the material so it makes sense to YOU. Be it through diagrams or schematics, the process of organizing and synthesizing material is incredibly helpful. ESPECIALLY, prior to implementing active recall strategies.
    This trend with RUclipsrs antagonizing note-taking due to evidence of decreased efficiency towards retention of material completely misses the mark on why note-taking is primarily done to begin with.
    We take notes in order to help synthesize and/or organize material, to increase our UNDERSTANDING and to build a mental framework of the material (especially in concept heavy courses). Retention can then be taken care of later on with Anki, practice questions or any other method.
    Please stop antagonizing notes for views.

      I'm just commenting on this so hopefully it gets bumped up further to the top of the comments section. Great comment, more people need to see this! I've watched many RUclips videos about studying because I want to do the best as I can in my classes and so many of them take this "ditch the notes" approach but I'm not going to, notes really help me!

    • @abdullahahmad4239
      @abdullahahmad4239 2 года назад +99

      Yeah it's pretty obvious why this approach failed. You didn't know to use it properly.
      The step you're talking about that occurs before Anki and wrongly crediting note taking for is called "understanding". Everyone says that you have to understand the material before using Anki. It's pretty self explanatory but everyone stresses this in all the Anki and "How to make good flashcard " videos.
      That's the exact point of this videos. To understand the material. Like he says in this video ,he previews the material before class. This double go-through the material ,again, facilitates understanding. Heck,the process of making Anki cards yourself also does exactly what you claim that note taking does.When You make Anki cards ,you try to synthesize the information in a way that makes sense to you. Heck,the whole concept of Active recall is just that.
      You kind of made it clear yourself that you don't grasp how this works since you literally that "Retention can be done later with Anki". Anki isn't just for the spaced repetition. You have to use it for "Active recall".
      I think that's where your problem was. You didn't active recall and rather devolved Anki into a tool for rot memorization. My suggestion would be to go search on videos on how to increase your understanding of the material.

    • @Rpere387
      @Rpere387 2 года назад +74

      @@abdullahahmad4239 Anki is not and has never been a panacea for learning content. Many before us have excelled without it, although it is an excellent tool. You have two main flaws in your argument one is that you’re trying to draw a parallel between note-taking and anki, the two have mutually exclusive limitations and benefits. The “process”of note-taking allows a student to piece together ideas and connect them VISUALLY in one living document, which you can then review and recall regularly. It’s only passive if you allow it to be. Anki becomes especially inefficient in concept heavy courses that thrive on the connection of many ideas, the random assortment of hundreds of cards becomes a frenzy of disconnected data points. The other flaw is that you’re equating “watching a video” or “previewing the material” as a substitute for note-taking when in reality neither of the two offer the same benefit. Note-taking is an opportunity to interact with the content and reform it to fit your own understanding. Im not saying anki is ineffective, it isn’t. What I’m saying is you need to realize it has its limitations and be able to recognize when other methods may be more efficient.

      @@Rpere387 I don't know if he discusses this in his video since I've yet to complete it, but one of his tactics is literally to make Connections. His method isn't 100% for you - it's his method. You should take aspects that you like and apply them. If all this method lacks for you is visual Connections, just make a mind map for every chapter or what not.

      The interesting thing about learning it's the fact that there is basically two phases: understanding + remembering. So FOR ME there is the active reading or the taking notes part + lecture that helps me to understand the subject. But than it depends of the content to know how I'm gonna test my self to remembering ( mainly anki if it's fact information and questions and problems if it's applicable information). So you need to find your understanding process + your remembering method. Than YOUR study method is complete.

    It hurts a little to know that the majority of people can watch a video or lecture or read a chapter of a textbook and simply... understand and retain information from them. If anyone is reading this, I hope you never take that for granted. I have to work so hard just to process the words and turn each paragraph or lecture slide into notes that I can understand. Then I have to review my notes multiple times and make them into simpler "summary" notes. Then I review these notes a bunch more times, quiz myself on them, and then "teach" them to my partner to see if I actually understand the material. Then I have to review and practice repeatedly to remember anything. I wish there were more resources for people with learning disabilities. Neurotypicals can study "inefficiently" and still be successful, but there are so few people out there trying to help people like me optimize our studying even though we desperately need it.

As a new college student I would go crazy with Cornell notes and I wasn’t able to get through reading a chapter before my instructor moved on. I fell behind, felt discouraged, and ending up dropping out, but three years later I restarted for nursing. No notes, just reading and really trying to learn the chapter without interrupting my thought process with notes. I usually read the chapter before class, attend zoom lecture, do practice quizzes, labeling games, and explain what I’m learning to my husband in ways that he’ll understand. Isn't Anki pretty much the modern form of taking notes? It's taking notes you'll actually review later.

    • @kaylastarr3822
      @kaylastarr3822 3 года назад +158

      Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Making flash cards in my mind is kind of like taking notes, except that it's in a way that you can use them for active recall.

    • @letsdomath1750
      @letsdomath1750 3 года назад +22

      Maybe, but I would simply review my notes later and never made flashcards for some subjects. For others, if I needed to basically memorize something verbatim, I would rewrite key notes on separate pieces of paper or bring out note cards to write things down repeatedly a couple of times and then from memory. I would also read my notes aloud to myself over and over if something was not sinking in just by reading.

    • @tybera1114
      @tybera1114 3 года назад +30

      @@letsdomath1750 I get this but it seems like taking notes and translating them over is just a time sink. Using Anki straight away It forces me to be fairly terse, and it's less work over time. I was wasting so much time writing notes then turning them into useful cards. I just went straight from slides/lectures/text to cards and it's been pretty useful for me. Worst case I see a card that's silly on review and delete it.
      That being said, what works for everyone is different. Many folks memorize better when they physically write out notes, and there is research that this is a more active method of studying, as long as the notes are in your own words and not just your brain transcribing the lecture.

    • @letsdomath1750
      @letsdomath1750 3 года назад +5

      @@tybera1114 Yeah, personally I would only write cards if I needed to memorize stuff word for word starting the week of the assessment, especially definitions or long proofs of theorems that I needed to write down quickly on an exam. For biology and chemistry, it depended more on the course and instructor. For some, I could read my lecture notes the night before and get an A, but for others, it would have been worthwhile to study over a longer period of time. My grades were fine, but I procrastinated a lot with a heavy course load, lol.
      Also, I was always able to internalize formal academic jargon pretty quickly, so I wouldn't need to paraphrase to casual speech that much. Writing helped me to focus on steps and sequential details, and it's great for remembering formulas: just write them down over and over for every relevant practice problem. Writing was also useful for memorizing the enzymes and substrates in the Krebs cycle for biology classes.
      Creating my own mnemonic devices was actually helpful to retain information years after the class was over. It also helped that I was a tutor, so teaching concepts to others was something I practiced a lot and helped me retain and understand concepts better.

    Thanks for mentioning Anki and the spaced learning method in general! I am at the top of my (non-medical) field, and I used Anki 15 years ago to help me pass the most difficult certification test in my field. I recently did a very high profile consultation and needed to recall a very specific, but very important, detail from that training to help them solve a problem that had gone unresolved for months. I instantly remembered the mnemonic I made 15 years ago and drilled into my long-term memory using Anki, wrote it on the whiteboard, and walked a group of 15 highly experienced engineers through something that I haven't touched in 15 years! Spaced learning, through flash cards or digital organized flash cards like Anki are absolutely the best way to commit concepts to your permeant memory. I'd love if in the year 2035 you come back to this comment and post a similar situation. I'm sure you will have it!

You’ll never see me rewriting everything down, that would take for ever and it’s too bring for me. I need to make connections between the concepts, I love images or I can draw them myself. Something I love to do is to teach myself the topic in the sense that I’ll explain the topic to myself out loud. If I’m able to do that, it means I actually get it, or I’ll explain it to my sister and annoy her 😂

    So here‘s some notes (:-) I took about this:
    Plan the evening before what you‘re going to do next day. A very short list.
    Preview (prepare) for the next day. Requires you to know or guess what‘s coming. That makes you more prepared. Make short question / answer cards, als known as flash cards*) about the material to come: How would you quiz a friend on that material? Basic idea: if you hear about a topic in class for the first time, you were not well prepared. Think about class as a meeting. You want to honor everyone‘s, and your, time by being well prepared.
    View: While in a lecture / class, don‘t waste your time making notes**). Listen and engage actively, and ask meaningful questions, and in class, or immediately after class:
    Review those questions that came to your mind, and make some short question/answer cards if you found good questions. What might you as a teacher quiz on a test about what‘s being explained right now?
    Practice Test: Do those flash cards often, space them out over the days so that you come back to material regularly. Do that every day. Add more questions like what you were having problems with, or what you found elsewhere.
    *) He speaks about „Anki“, which is an application for flash cards. That‘s great and I am all for using technology for learning. But plain simple little paper cards also do. When I studied, I literally had shoe boxes full of them
    **) If the teacher insists on you taking notes, then do so, but in this case mark up with some colors, on your notes, clearly „Q“s (questions) and „A“s (answers) you‘d later be putting into flash cards.
    Essentially, what he does is to prepare, engage actively, and regularly with the key points of the material coming up with questions and answers that he finds relevant.

    Be very careful with overtaking someone else's study technique especially if its a drastic change like this. It's much harder for me to understand big concepts when i immediately go for doing flashcards and dont write/sketch it down in my own words before. My current technique is to make summaries on paper and then do active recall on them/feynman by covering parts that i want to recall. It maximized my efficiency by about 300%

    I really don't get the hatred so many people have for highlighting. You just need to do it right! When I read the material for the first time ill highlight the important point of the paragraph, for example in a paragraph about a hormone having a particular effect in a blood vessel I'll highlight the hormone name and the effect. This is so helpful for every next time I'll study cause I can run through the material, quickly see what each paragraph says and think "do i know this? " If it is something I know well i can just skip it and this whole process takes a split second. And when i encounter something I don't remember well I immediately realise it and focus on the issue. Highlighting works, you just have to highlight the important stuff

    Thank you, im going to try this! Im on my second semester if grad school, and i feel that I spend more time reading and writing notes than actually understanding what I read! I actually decided to stopped writing long notes and just decided to read materials and be engaged in lecture , and I finally got perfect scores on my quizzess this week! But i feel that i need to do a proper method of doing this, and your video will help me organize my time better! Thank you 🙏🏻

    Thank you so much for this information. I am just finishing up Human Anatomy and Physiology 16 week course condensed into 8 weeks , so it has been intense. I was taking extensive notes from the E-book, printing out chapter review section, key terms , and making sure I could answer review questions correctly before taking quizzes. I either would do great or bomb. I literally have all that info at my fingertips . plus a couple extra study guide books handy. It is really frustrating to spend hours and hours taking notes and then you bomb a test or quiz. I've been looking for a better technique. Thank you , I will definitely see if this works better.

    I usually took notes before and later realized that ut didn't help me in long term, and took hell of lot of time. But this and many videos really opened my eye to study and understand studying 😊

    Broooo I just wanna say thank you for this magbificent video. I've been working hard this semester but I never really understood concepts and would study a couple hours a day and tire myself out, until I started using your method "understand don't memorize". Thanks to you I know how to study for my tests and brought my grades up. 😀😀
