What a neighborly place, it will be missed. Love the program Everybody Eats, what a compassionate way to help others when times are tough, wish him the best in finding a way to continue. These times they are a changing!

Now I really regret not having dined at this little lovely corner cafe within walking distance from where I lived in Berkeley. It is so true what they said - not easy to dine during the weekdays and very crowded on the weekends. I wished all of them well and lots of success in their new business adventures.♥
Very classy that he didn't mention the crime , homeless and drug issue of the neighborhood and Berkeley that is the primary issue. It is not just the small business crime , but the daily challenge of customers sidestepping the muggings and car break ins just to support the business. He is an idealist but feels defeated by the anarchy and legalization of crime by the DA, Mayor and City Council. SAD - When will we wake up ? ?

It is sad to see another cafe close. I am not sure it was even there when I was there? I do remember 1 or 2 other restaurants that closed down since I was there. One that I and a lot of students enjoyed was the CBI (Come Back Inn). It was a pizza and beer joint for the students. It was open late into the night. It was a great place for students to meet and unwind after studying. Then it was discovered by the US Navy. It went downhill fast. It early on had a bunch of sorority traffic. Not too many of the sorority sisters wanted to fraternize with the Navy Seamen. Now I will probably get flack for criticizing the Navy Seamen. Unfortunately that was really a truism. I don't think they molested people, but things like the cleanliness of the bathrooms went downhill quickly.
Soon to be a Starbucks.
I remember buying a dear friend breakfast for editing my term paper. May my friend and Homemade Cafe rest in peace.

I ate there for soup and sandwich in the 80's, great food and people. The .25 meal program and the people's park food program and the Catholic church program are what homeless people used back then. I just wish there were more people thanking him but it is a College Town being that close to the campus.

Not really. BPP was all about communitys arming themselves to police their own communities. Exactly opposite of what Bay Area politicians are doing now by letting people just steal w/o consequences and letting the homeless shoot up in the streets. The Black Panthers also started the free breakfast program for kids. Some have said the BPP have a lot in common w Southern whites in the beliefs of a well organized militia
