The restaurant business is tough. To last that long is a monumental achievement. Enjoy your retirement Mr. Tam.
I was at Mum's Cafe a few weeks ago. I was devastated to hear that they are closing. Definitely the pandemic and inflation, rising crime all affected businesses around Japantown. The owner definitely had a great run and I hope retirement will bring peace and prosperity the family.
Is there any way for you to reach out to the owners some how? I was thinking they could get a food truck and run their business from there. Then just go around the city to different places serving food. They could even offering catering or just do special events for people (birthdays, anniversary....etc). I am sure too that San Francisco offers a place for just food trucks during a certain time. Then they wouldn't have to really pay rent per month. Save money.
Continue voting for democrats and crying about it?
@Fjb Atyoutube1 yeah they are sicko. Pandemic over 3 years ago. Biden and democrats do not care about us all
Woke agenda claims another victim, yet Democrats no zero clue why. They just can't connect the dots...
Democrats soft on crime, high taxes and high regulation, with the rise of min wage that hurts small businesses have destroyed San Francisco. Don Ramon Mexican restaurant on 10 st by mission just closed these week. Burlington, office max, and big lots on mission st at 30th all gone also. If you vote Democrats then you voted for this.
This is why as a business owner, it was critical for me to own the building my business operates in. Save all you can to do this. Most of the stories of family business closing down is because of rent increases. The business is gone, with only memories.
Yeah it is easier to just own the building. I was thinking though....if they really wanted to stay in the business, they could get a food truck. Then they wouldn't have to really pay went. They could just go to different areas around the city serving food. I am sure San Francisco has place just for food trucks during a certain time of the week.
most restaurant owners are not loaded. I remember one of my ex-client, a restauranteur. That client owned about 6 restaurants in SF, ferry building, next to sf symphony, Japantown, etc. That client did not make much money. All that person got was a meager $40K of wage in some of the restaurants she ran, some didn't even have enough money to issue her wage, so she was kind of working for free.
@@ninersnation3298 Restaurants cost $500,000 and up to even renovate and open. I know of ones that have spent $1 to 2 million. Having that many locations and not turning a profit is just accounting magic. The money is there. No one works for free.
Do you even know how much that building costs? IF YOUR A BUSINESS OWNER. LOL Since you have no idea on cost you will never own your own business.
@@Rotary650 There have been multiple landlords who've already shown themselves to be greedy.
Everyone knows many landlords are greedy and upcharge their rent way higher than what the actual rent should be all to make as much profit as possible out of their tenants.
By your outraged reply, you seem to fall exactly into that same category of greedy pigs.
Imagine being a millionaire landlord in San Francisco and kicking this family out of their business
In Japan, there are city programs that directly works with retiring owners to find new owners willing to take over and preserve the business. It's a shame such a program doesn't exist and we ultimately see the businesses fall apart.
People buy established businesses here as well.
@@jameshudkins2210 True, but there's no social economic program designed to preserve businesses by connecting to people willing to inherit from retiring owners.
@@tentobot
Inheritance is inside the family. They know if they want to do it and then they can.
There are specialized Real Estate agents called Business Brokers who handle these sales of small businesses.
There are ads in the newspaper labeled Business Opportunities.
There are vendors who call on small businesses who know of places which are available for sale.
Specialized departments in Escrow companies handle the transactions similar to the sale of Real Property.
God help us from Socialized Public Sector agencies which attempt to do anything. SBA - Small Business Administration has been doing nearly nothing for many years.
This is a well trod path. It can be done. You can start now if you want to.
The biggest problems are a small business which is more of a job than it is worth and a prospective buyer who has nothing to offer. He is not necessary.
It takes a little money and a lot of work to do a business whether you buy or start it.
There is no point to operate any biz in SF. High crime, high cost, high regulation, high tax, high homeless.
Still voting for the insanity
It's sad to hear they're leaving, but glad to hear that they were so be loved in their community. Wish I lived there and had a chance to try. Good luck in your new endeavors and many blessings upon you and your family
When family restaurant close, the city is next to go.
gloom and doom. so tiring
Peters: what’s so great about San Fransicko then? Don’t insult if you can’t back up your claim
I live half way on the other side of the country and it breaks my heart ♥️ to see a place like this close…it’s hard to find a good restaurant that has this kind of history and is such an icon of a community…Very sad to see you go and Best Wishes to all of you on your next journey.😊😊😊
We lost our family business of 30 years as well due to landlord raising rents by 30% and lack of business during COVID. A lot of small family businesses will end up closing. Very sad!
@Fire Plug You mean the basic "living wages" they demand?
@@boochi7087 Not every job requires a living wage. You socialist crack me up. Probably the laziest bunch of entitled babies.
tell us before they close next time, so we can make last call.
I saw the story a few days ago, so they did.
Finally, a story with a somewhat positive spin.
Never been there but live in So Cal and it's getting more difficult finding a good authentic Japanese restaurant. Happy retirement!
Bittersweet
What's the positive spin?
@@isaacreyes7589 at least there's nothing about drugs, homeless, crime, Pelosi, Newsom, Bonta, wokeness, etc.
@Too-old Forthischet 😆 true that
Liberals loser have burned this city into the ground
there is so many options for japanese in southern california!
Many of the commercial properties in SF are owned by foreign investors (who live in Dubai for example) who only care about $$$$, not people or their 40 years in business. The investors raise the rent beyond what a business can afford then leave the property empty as a tax write off. This has been going on for decades. I remember reading a news article in the 1980's titled "Who Owns San Francisco?" and was shocked at the high percentages of foreign owned property listed by country.
same goes for NYC. the emirates, israel & the chinese owns the city. dont be fooled by the local population/demographic.
Glad they are so fortunate & happy to have had such a wonderful family business as long as they were able too along with the fact that they stayed intact; no negative vibes came their way & all are healthy & alive!!
Early retirement is the best!!
Enjoy all your precious family moments together and blessings for your Golden Years 🎉🍾🥂❤️💕
the whole state vibe.. cali really needs a better leader
How? The entire voting system in the State of California is rigged. With mail-in ballots have ballot harvesting they have the market cornered in corruption.
We could’ve had Larry but too much corruption here
It’s not necessarily the whole state vibe. Certain cities don’t vote democrat to not have a blue vibe. My mom’s friend lives 30 min outside of SF and they’ve been non-partisan locally for a long time.
stop pushing your negative vibe, so inappropriately.
@@savsmiles3042 How about moving back to england?
That what happens under MR . Gavin
oh I see so Gavin is responsible for all the problems in Calif., the US and hey possibly the world. such a bore reading these responses.
The writing is on the wall for California's failures. Paying the bill will be a generational legacy
If only he had 11,000 vewts
What a shame to this city if we invested in historic places and venues
I grew up 2 blocks away. So sad, and sad that this is to be expected in California.
😥 this makes me sad. when i hear 40 yrs, it brings back memories of the city I once knew not what it is now.
Such a sad story but I hope this wonderful family can move on and build new memories. Best of luck 👍 ✨️
San Fransisco really does NOT prioritize its residents. What a shame
SF does put criminals and junkies and transformers and homeless buns on a pedestal. They think tax paying law abiding businesses and civilians are absolute garbage
Such amazing business people and they have amazing customers just another inspiration of the American dream.
One of the local restaurants in my area had to close because homeless people were walking into the restaurant the taking food from customers' tables. The restaurant would replace the meal at their cost; but after more than a year of this the restaurant couldn't afford it anymore. Pay the cooks and servers? Or give away free meals. The restaurant has been gone for over 2 years now, and the building was vandalized and boarded up. Still is vacant, but with graffiti covering the plywood. It's even on the "For Lease" sign.
In Berkeley, CA poor, ragged crazy people enter and walk table to table aggressively asking for money from customers. It is very disturbing. I complained to several restaurant owners. They said the Police won't help them and they are afraid. I told them that if a Homeless person hurts me inside their restaurant I will sue them and take everything they have. They are in a unenviable position. I won't be victimized.
Congratulations Democrat voters
Getting the glorious, revolutionary, humanist socialist people's paradise voted for.
This is what happens if you have a terrible social security system like in the US. This kind of shit just doesn't happen in Europe at all because poor people get enough money from the government to keep on living
@@Bladieblah The total budget of government programs exceeds all per capita costs which could pay all rent, food and everything. The Poor get almost none of the money. Almost all (95%+-) of the budget goes to Facility and program facilitators. You don't find them in contact with the Poor. I've asked the poor.
The poor turn down food. I have offered. They want money.
They don't want to hear about AA. I have spoken with them.
It takes no money nor lack of it to attack someone else. Violence is free and is a behavior not economics.
All Gavin Newsom fault...... Everybody wants to get out of the state
don't let the screen door hit you on the way out.
@@carmenpeters728 enjoy Utopia
With so much people pooping in front of restaurants in San Francisco, who would want to eat out anymore.
I was at Mums 30 years ago! They were a legend back then
Time get out . Too Manny criminals in san francisco right now . Good luck
aka black people
San Francisco is dying.
It's on life support
Economy sucks everything is expensive . People are not eating out like they used too and can't afford too.
I eat out everyday. 🤷♂️
In California stealing is legal..
yup, dont for get drugs are free too
It's because everyone is equal, including the drug addicts and criminals
I've lived in California (So Cal) for 53 years, and it has gone to total shit and is totally unaffordable.
Raising taxes 20% each year is also legal in california. 🤷♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣
NJ too
Another historic business closes. Thank your local SF government. They totally rock!!!
And Newsome. He forced lockdowns. I lost my job bc the restaurant I worked at closed permanently bc of the lockdowns.

Comrades, let's keep voting for The Party. lol
@@jamesrecknor6752 Until SF is like Portland. Whoo hoo.
I wish they could home deliver that delicious Japanese food in the town of Chillingbourne.
The restaurant business in San Francisco is merciless even in good times. Many don't even survive their first year. For them to last four decades it a testament to the family.
They closed because the mega rise in crime !!!
Democrat ran city....one of the worst in the nation.
And nepotism that favors black and Mexican restaurants.
@@911jayishsupremacy people in the Bay Area love Japanese food
How much do you contribute to peace? zero. and how much did you spend in thir restaurant? zero
God bless their family & their 40 business. Thank u 👏
Family from Hong Kong running a Japanese restraunt in S.F. I am surprised the cultural appropriations warriors didn't take them out long ago
Call in Al Sharpton, he'll find something to bitch about that it's not black enough
The Democrats cancelled this business because Chinese folks owning a Japanese restaurant is not allowed…
Hong kong family running a japanese restaurant is hard if you're not japanese.
They have done it for almost four decades. The owner wants to retire. Good for him.
So sad😢
Sad.. Did not know there was a resto there.
No buyers or ppl to hand it off to?
Great story. Loved this place for shabu shabu. They will be missed.
That's sad.
oh noooo.
Chinese people serving “Authentic” Japanese food in America. Let that sink in.
Mum’s was the best Shabu place in SF. Pricey, but worth it for special occasions like birthdays.
Too rich already ☕️
Why? What’s wrong with SF?
So that restaurant was NEVER REALLY AUTHENTIC JAPANESE FOOD..😅😅
Dont matter for most of us if it tastes good and affordable.
San Francisco is so business unfriendly right now - no businesses can survive.
Crime goes unpunished in SF, esp dine-n-dash so walgreens safeway and others will close. U get what u vote for. Njoy suckers!!!😂😂
Why did they close?
The owner is retiring.
Rent too high, too much theft
too many black people
SF , Commiefornia, Biden’s America
Building Back Better
I really loved the place back in the day. ❤
I think there a lot of business going out of business because during the pandemic they may have scammed the ppo program money and have their loan forgiven. So they hoping by closing their business they aren’t being investigated.
Gas was triple the price. What are govs doing!
I'm sure the building owner has a corporate franchisee waiting to take over the location.
Damn. Lived here my whole life n never went there
wow...shocking
Good is time to shut down. no need to pay any more tax since no dang law are willing to protect business
never heard
SF where middle class and businesses are chased out while homeless and criminals are treated as best customers ever.
What to much crime?
Rent keep going up is why most restaurant close down
bring it to florida. we would love a japan town here
I go to L A about once a month and I don’t see people wearing masks. Are they just doing the pandemic in SF?
No, probably an Asian thing
Unmask the silliness
They’re Asian. Masks were worn before the pandemic in a lot of Asia
😭
😢😢😢
Going out to eat is becoming unaffordable
Good 'ol corporate-greed driven inflation...
more business to go...sf is on a roll
They should blame it on the chinese for that
Joe Biden’s America.
greedy landlords but even for me w rent control my expenses are about $350 more a months since Covid so expensive this city now
Hi my friend
Good
お疲れ様でした😢
Not even Japanese owners….
Could it be because of the melanin love? We know historically in America Black people love Asians! 🤗😍❤️
San Francisco RIP
crime is out of control. Couple that with rising costs, More will be closed unfortunately
Okay, and?
You get what you voted for enjoy
America land of dream. No more.
Sadly out of control inflation has killed a lot of things from businesses to my stock portfolio.
The whole city is falling into ruin. The old, good things are vanishing in the wake of open crime, addiction, and poverty. I've been to Mum's a few times, but since we stopped visiting the city a couple of years ago, like most tourists nowadays who would rather vacation someplace safer, it's easy to understand why more and more like this one will shut their doors.
Well, look's like the viral tiktok did not work for them!
This is a shame. I love me sum chicken chow mein.
Open a Starbucks in it's place. It was a great run though.
The only thing permanent is change.
A Japanese restraunt in Japantown owned and operated by Chinese people. Seems legit.
Glad we got to eat here, enjoy retirement!
It’s better to close now because things seems it’s going to get worse, it’s also time to get out of California too.
Move the restaurant out of California. The failure state.
Home of the purge attack from within
So there has been non stop issues with drug addicts, homeless, thugs, etc, crowding the sidewalk and even coming into the restaurant. The latest mantra has been "This Is Our Hood."
So what does that tell ya. These people have been there forever, but the BLM crowd actually wanted to know what right they have to be there.
Here is the big lesson for all of them too: The owner started as a dishwasher. That is why Asians have historically loved and begged and prayed and risked their lives to come to America, because a dishwasher who works his ass off can be owner. But don't spread the secret because there is a big group of different minorities in good ole America who don't wanna hear dat shizzle, dey wanna start as owner ... Don't gimme no dishwasher bullshit
at one point you need to start buying garbage ingredients and pretend to your customers that you are selling the same. but glad they are not doing that and instead decided to shut down. and such a positive vibes. hope they found new opportunities for them. they probably also tried to sell the place (assumption) but since no buyers ... sad
