The reason for the conversation being recorded was explained in the trial. Her niece explained that they (Pauline, her brother and the niece) had met up to discuss the estate of their recently deceased mother. They initially started the recording to have an account of what they agreed upon in regard to the division of the estate. I think this part of the conversation followed on from that and just happened to still be recording. The full conversation probably isn’t included in the trial because only this part of it is relevant to the case. So yes, Pauline did know that some parts of that conversation were being recorded but none of them would have foreseen that it would ever be released.
Though the clinking of wine bottles Pauline an intelligent but profoundly disturbed woman gives her sad, conflicted lament! Does he love me? Yes; he does but he needs to abuse her. She loves him and accepts the state of affairs and at times partipates willingly. Is friends with L who loves her. Very conflicted and confused woman who colludes with her so called abuser. Sad her professed love is not enough to keep this tragic marriage viable. Someone in the family thought it necessary to record her alcohol fueled woe. Her own high self opinion of herself overrides common sense. She dies!
