- In an Australian TV first and a full length documentary, Denham Hitchcock takes viewers inside one of Australia’s most explosive legal dramas, following “killer” cop Zachary Rolfe, as he stands accused over the death of Warlpiri teen Kumanjayi Walker. 7NEWS Spotlight was given unprecedented access to Rolfe during his trial which sparked Australia’s own Black Lives Matter protests and outcry beyond Indigenous communities.
The murder charge unsettled police around the country, as Rolfe was forced to plead his innocence and defend his lethal actions during Walker’s arrest on that fateful night. Rolfe’s family share their devastation at the murder charges, which they believe were ordered by the highest levels of the NT government.
His tearful mother Deb weeps as she recalls the trauma of talking to her son through prison glass “just like in the movies”, while a former police investigator on the case speaks out about his grave concerns over the rush to charge Rolfe with murder.
When the controversial police officer is found not guilty of Walker’s murder, the behind-the-scenes drama is inflamed again, all captured by 7NEWS Spotlight.
Rolfe shares his shocking reaction to his acquittal for the first time in-depth, in a chilling moment Walker supporters won’t want to miss and will never forget.

So much for the brotherhood!
They threw this guy under the bus fast asf.
I guess I'm just confused on the whole issue of this being excessive force... The suspect was literally stabbing the cop! He stabbed him before the cop even pulled his gun out, and STILL had the scissors in his hand after being shot... I'm just baffled at how people think this cop used "excessive force."
This is crazy! How was this man even arrested? I am by no means a "back the blue" person and was expecting to be outraged by police brutality or systemic racism but what I saw was a man arresting an escaped criminal who was trying to kill him and his partner who the day before was swing an AXE at officers.
Thank God he was acquitted. What were you thinking Australia? Another case of politics gone amok.
would have been good if his community put that much passion into helping him be a better person instead of throwing a hate/race campaign towards a police officer that defended himself and his partner while being violently attacked
Frankly I do not know how they get police, medical staff or teachers to go into these environments. Given the political climate the risk is far too high.
I held my breath waiting for the verdict. Put yourselves in the police man’s shoes, you’ve been stabbed , he’s trying to get your gun and is constantly lunging at you and your friend. He was right to fire his gun. If the aboriginal man just put his hands up he would be alive today. He chose to go out fighting. Why weren’t his community doing more to turn his life around. They were quick to lay blame but not on the correct person.
I feel for the cop, these violent offenders should not be on the streets.
These demons are such liar s
Seriously what do you want People are screaming for Justice Justice was served when this man was shot and killed for trying to murder the police officer
He did what he had to do. I feel bad for the guy.
I would've liked to see more of the deceased man and his family too.
It's terrible for the aboriginal people, but they have to look at what actually happened. I don't know what the powers that be wanted to happen in sending Zach to the place where nothing good happens for the aboriginal people. There was a reason for that... Squirrels at work amongst the police ???
BTW Forgot to say, this boy didn't deserve to go to jail. Certainly a person died and that's always a tragedy, but he saved two lives. Blessings to Zach and his Mum.
Justice was done.
Did he not have a taser? Just a question.
it shows in the vid that the criminal went for the cops gun first
A good example of the Australian justice system at work...showing respect to the dead man by opening a fair judicial system to the death of an Aboriginal and letting the PPL decide whether the police officer was in the wrong or right...Things could of being conducted better at the time of arrest...he lost his job over it but he avoided jail....hopefully there can be things learnt from this very bad situation.
This is a tragic and interesting and important investigation and legsl case. There exists a major effort to decrease the perceived excessive force and police gratuitous and excessive use of force and violence.
This officer does need to face the charges. In my opinion and very clearly, the officer was conducting a necessary investigation and an unfortunate but justifued and not unlawful use of deadly force. Decisions occurred rapidly, Situation was decisively addressed resulting in the resisting man being shot, total of three ahots, and death of the resisting man.
Non fatal options? In the moment no time to switch over to different tactic or different means. Necessary ability to protect the offi et's own life and also the other officer's life requires application of the principle of what in the States is called qualified immunity. This was not a case of graft or corruption nor callous disregard of human life nor negligence.
