Wow, something I can relate to! Having played "dead person in water" myself, I remember that the director and the set wasn't too familiar with how people float in water and was annoyed that my legs were more submerged in the water than the upper body and kept asking me to "float straight" because I was ruining the shot. After a couple of times explaining that was physically impossible they did, to their credit, device a handy method of filling my pants with empty plastic bottles which kept my legs floating. It was also a literally 3 second shot in a short movie and they spent 4-5 hours trying to film it...
That sounds so frustrating to deal with and the outcome would look so unreal. I can almost feel the "you are just a dead body and we can replace you in a heartbeat so you have no say in this"-kind of attitude.
I think dead bodies tend to float more level because there's less air in their lungs vs a living person holding their breath. Meaning the torso is not as buoyant.
The reverse is also true and seems to happen on many sets. Trying to get a body to sink into the depths... "What do you mean, buoyancy? Why won't their chest go down?"
