    Everyone, this is a re-upload. Please be careful in the comments section. While we disagree with the ruling on the previous publication, we publish on their platform, so they have all the rights to do whatever. We had backup plans that we had put together last year, but didn't expect to need to push them ahead so soon. Will update with the backups soon, but take care for the meantime.

    I owned a Sig-550-2 for about a year (2002-2003 or so) and for me at the time, it was a Grail rifle. I liquidated a lot of guns to buy it (going rate at the time was north of $8k) and bought about a dozen extra mags, a scope mount, and thought it was the bees knees. Until I shot it. At that point, the rose colored glasses shattered. It was extremely nose heavy, heavier (subjectively) out front than a heavy barreled A2 and the balance just didn't work for me. The bipod seemed a bit overly tall and made it uncomfortable to shoot prone and don't even think about shooting it off a bench using the bipod. But what really did it to me was when the whole "Swiss Accuracy" myth was shattered. The best groups we could get, on average, were ~2MOA, some smaller, some larger, but a free float AR from a decent manufacturer was printing much better.
    There was a certain amount of cachet that it brought to the table when you took it out of the case. You knew that no one else would have one, and short of the FAMAS (or the rumored 1 to 3 SA-80s that were supposed to have been imported but no one ever saw), it was perhaps the most unique combat rifle of the era. That said, someone offered me considerably more than I had in the entire package about a year after I bought it and out the door it went.

      The 552 was iirc a bit of a failed experiment. I haven't heard of a 550-2, but if you mean the 552, most of it's problems were solved in the 553 iteration.

    • @kfeltenberger
      @kfeltenberger 2 года назад

      @@shanesaesseli3279 I think I know what the rifle I paid $8k to buy was called. The original SIG-550-1 was a 1:12 twist barrel while the 550-2 came a little later and had the 1:7 twist barrel.

    • @xy-yt3xp
      @xy-yt3xp 2 года назад

      @@kfeltenberger maybe you used the wrong ammo? The correct ammo is swiss GP90 ammo. But 8k is too much for that gun anyway. At that point you are just paying for it's rarity. In Switzerland you can get one for 1.500 on the market. But many you can get for free as people are giving up their military rifle.

    • @kfeltenberger
      @kfeltenberger 2 года назад

      @@xy-yt3xp It was the "right ammo"; GP90 and a couple others. Yes, in 2002 it was a rare and very desirable rifle and the price reflected it. It doesn't matter what the price is/was in Switzerland because they were illegal to import when I bought mine.

    • @Polarbear-nq9nd
      @Polarbear-nq9nd 2 года назад

      being swiss myself, having served using the 550 and 553 and owning both in private, I can happily say both will never be as accurate as a well made AR.
      It's facts and I also tested it myself with all three mounted in a sled.
      Using GP90 doesn't matter either, it's just good 62gr 5.56 fmj. nothing more, nothing less.
      The SIG rifles are very accurate but nothing mythical. my 550 shoots 1-2 MOA, the 553 0.75 - 1.5 MOA with various loads. Most accurate was swiss made OTM ammo and not GP90.
      the 55X series have an edge on ARs when it comes the magazine mechanism in cold weather, when running surpressed aswell as running forever without cleaning or needing any replacement parts like the AR15 does with gas rings etc.
      Both are great and my AR15 ran 3k rounds without cleaning, just some oiling. could have gone further but I decided to clean it.

    Most of my 5.56x45 is a 1x9 twist and I shoot with a 79 Gr. Projectile sometimes a projectile at 62 Gr.(I think, at least in the 60s).
    The platform is a heavy barrel AR rifle manufactured by Colt and Bushmaster. My actual Sniper Rifles are Remington Bolt guns purpose built from Remington both with very heavy barrels and further refined by a gunsmith and setup for LEO in 7.62x54 using hand loads developed for each individual rifle. Barrel lengths were 24” and 28”. The 24” is considered for Urban environments and concerned with ingress and egress.
    Each having sub-MOA at 100 yds. For LEO as you know these platforms are sighted in at 100 yds.(yeah, I’m an IT guy but I am also LEO trained by one of the larger LEO agencies in the US, enough said on that).
    Topped with a Leupold Mark 4 scope on all my sniper rifles
    Researching on acquiring a 3rd use sniper platform. I have some semi collectible old school platforms I use as range toys, nothing I would bet my life on or compete with, just for having fun.
    Would I purchase something like this, Well... for collecting YES, bet my life on NOT.
    I’ve use my Remingtons out to about 850 yards with good results. Not on square range. We were training and were in all type of situation from wooded to urban. Again, my results were good as I’m not a professional like yourself but I train to keep my skill up and I have the opportunity to train with LEOs(I am fortunate to be able to do this)

    Yea what people don't understand is that the SIG550 is specifically made to fire the special Swiss 5.6/GP90 loads but still able to chamber 5.56mm and in fact, almost all Swiss SIGs from the 550 series can fire both ammunitions well.
    It was stated that in good conditions with the 5.6mm, a normal 550 can square up to just 1.10 MOA or even tighter groupings at ~ 0.95 MOA and for a semi-auto rifle, that's PSG territory and it's a real good rifle.
    Also, the purpose built for the 550 Sniper was totally different and the philosophy was the same behind the 5.6mm rounds.
    So unlike other nation where they think of long range shots before anything else, the Swiss had a different philosophy. When they tested out the original standard 5.56mm of that time, they soon realized that the capability of it fell drastically even from the M16 of that time at 350m which was something they can't take as their ideology was to shoot at one mountain range (alps) to another range which the average gap between them would be about 400-500m apart, surpassing the rifle ability that they tested.
    So, the Swiss came up with a plan and started to make a heavier 5.56mm bullet with just finer powder that burns more efficiently and then slap it into their rifle. What they soon realized was that the 550 prototype that they fired it with soon achieved great MOA scores of about 1.40 - .1.8 with various shooter with the 5.6mm caliber and also somehow able to chew up the normal NATO SS109 5.56mm at that time too. With the normal SS109, the same set of shooters were able to get a range of 1.6 - 2.10 MOA which, for an assault rifle of that time, was extremely on par with the M16 and even surpasses many other 5.56mm rifles from other nation like the HK33 and even the bullpups like the AUG and FAMAS.
    However, the Swiss soon realized that the GP90 might be superbly expensive to manufacture for the general masses of the Swiss army thus they just issued the rounds for Swiss military competitive shooters, sniper units in the military and police units whereas the others use the 5.56mm that the Swiss themselves could readily get from either the US or any other NATO allied countries.

    Hi guys, VERY good point about the use of the gun. I never saw this crap in the Swiss army. Also never heard that it is in use with any Swiss police force... Probably tested for a while. With an SG550 in good condition we shoot frequently (with a 4x scope) at 600m and the hit rate was +/- 85% at the first shot. This was with a standard SG550. I have to say that standard Swiss GP90 amo will be considered as "sniper" amo in every other country. SG550 is probably still one of most accurate military "trooper" rifle yet. But I have to admit that this 550 "sniper" is a real piece of crap for the price. There is nothing that justified this price difference. A 25" barrel will newer be more accurate then a 18/20" one. Would had been interesting to see results with GP90 amo. Cheers

    I will say that the first shots at 500, somebody didn't wait for his observer to say quite clearly "low - Right" as that was obvious to us on the viewing end.
    55 gr projectiles on a heavy steel target. No movement. But you could tell.
    I would love to see you try this on Prarrie Dogs at medium ranges. I'll bet they would be pretty effective.
    Thanks again and I'm glad to see that you didn't die at the beginning. ;)

    This is a very nice rifle to have a friend own. I don't have a role for this rifle that is not much better and more economically filled with a HB ar or a Remington 700 . A 1 in 7 to 1 in 9 twist medium to heavy barreled AR with a Wylde chamber is hard to beat for heavier bullets at these ranges. I do consider the Remington slightly more precise even with the slower follow up and overall rate of fire.

    I would buy it. Only if it was able to snap shot at 100m with in a 3" of center. I would prefer a 7mm aka 30 cal variant. 1.8 twist to 2 with a long heavy 20" barrel to help harmonising projectile to flight path. If the barrel walls are too thin the projectile rattles and deharmnises with its intended path. No matter how tight the fit in battery. I like Henry's lever. They have heavy barrels, consistent groups through all kinds of ammo. Anyways fen-shway great content.
