The FR F1 is one of the least understood sniper variants in the U.S. due to it's rarity, but the rifle has been the champion for French soldiers using it on overseas and domestic missions. Notably, the GIGN rescued a school bus of 31 children in 1976 in a daring hostage rescue at Loyada, on the Somalian border.
This rifle was the basis of which the "synchronized sniper" doctrine was developed upon, and the GIGN executed a synchronized sniper mission, knocking out 4 terrorists who were on the school bus at once.
Learn how the French developed the FR F1 from a modified MAS 36 receiver with it's distinctive rear locking lugs, side elevation adjustment APX scopes and centrally aligned bipods.
Thanks to Ian from Forgotten Weapons for loaning us such a rare example. Please see Ian's FR F1 video on his channel, Forgotten Weapons : • French FR-F1 Sniper Ri...
Special thanks to The Gun Room LLC for the FFL support.
The film that features the GIGN / 2e REP in the Loyada incident is "L'intervention" or "15 minutes of war"... while it is entertaining, understand that it is not historically accurate with how the incident went down... but it's a great film to watch for entertainment.

I cracked "French surrender" jokes with my Armée de Terre friends as well, but you'll see what I think of the French Army at 12:30
and if you listen to the way the GIGN responded to terrorists taking a bus full of children at 15:44 , I trust that you will agree that they were not at all cowards. Politics just typically dictate the military in the west.

I spent my childhood in Djibouti and went everyday to school (the École Française de Djibouti) in these same SAVIEM school buses. My bus line was Le Lapin. The Loyada attack happened just a few years before we arrived there, all buses were still operated by French marines and legionnaires to reassure parents. It was also usual to have French MP vehicle following school-buses for extra protection. As kids we were not even fully aware of the extent of what was going on…

given the widespread experience with Lebels, an angry bolt pull might just be a feature that stuck-- it required some rather forceful pulling because of the elevator for its tube mag, and after literally everyone gets used to that, you start planning around it. No sense having people break things because you didn't work around how French soldiers were habituated to shoot.

I grew up thinking it was pronounced porsh, and then somehow, in fairly recent years it became porsh-a in uk pronunciation.
There is a certain bloody minded refusal in British linguistic culture to deliberately mispronounce things that are "foreign-sounding," coupled with a tendency to not question people who sound like they know what they're talking about (by which I don't mean experts- who in their right mind listens to experts?!)
My dad, for eg, recently started pronouncing tofu as "toff-oo" which drives me mad, but equally has really startedcme questioning my prior assumptions. Maybe I've been saying it wrong all my life? Argh!!!!

They have been developing the Ghost Recon games for some time now, and one of their signature features is the "Sync Shot", which is exactly what you described the GIGN team preforming. The SL doesn't count to 0 and wait the moment before the shot because video game but damn, the devs add a real GIGN tactic in as a game mechanic. Pretty Legit. Great video!

The caliber also change to 7.62 Otan. Otherwise the rifle is pretty much the same.
