The MAS 49/56 was the final iteration of the self-loading 7.5x54mm main infantry rifle to the post-war French forces.
The MAS 49/56's direct impingement gas system design pre-dates the AR15 by decades (which the AR15 is not a true DI system, it is an "internal piston"), and was a deliberate design that had a mind for mass manufacturing, easy field maintenance and reliability in adverse locations.
Further, while many NATO countries may not understand the logic behind the 7.5 French cartridge, Henry and Ian delve into this in context of military deployment, and why the 7.5 French was a decent round for it's intended purposes.
Today, the MAS 49/56 still makes its rounds in Syria, the Middle East and many parts of Africa, but what should one expect from it's performance?

Thanks to Ian for the excellent and informative session.
Quick point of business: Since we're sure we might get a comment or two questioning the first hit at 500, please take a look 5:19-5:22. You'll notice at the bottom of the right target leg, the shadow of the plate which is clearly moving from the impact.
Windy conditions like that would interfere with the performance of the rifle , but I'm sure the MAS 49/56 is a system that takes some getting used to. Otherwise, I can imagine it would perform much better.
Was this Ian's rifle? By the way the new image stabilization is good to go. Good job

Henry: “I HAVE TWO DOGS”
Just because it's a forgotten weapon doesn't mean it can't reach out and touch you. Edit: the vapor trails at 400yds are sick.
Were those more noticeable because of the image stabilization or from the ammo itself? It was fun to watch either way.

Lets review a french rifle:
Step 1. Choose which one
Step 2. "Hello Ian"
Some of the visual gags in this are amazing. The rifle wiafus, Ian "handing" Henry the scope, just amazing
That scene made my day, that's for sure~
Henry : For the glory of the Republic
French nobility : **sweats nervously**
Allons enfants de la Patrie le fusil de gloire est arrivé
In 2021 the french bourgeoisie yells "République !"
You mean nobility.
The bourgeoisie was behind the revolution.
Yes the bourgeoisie had the money but not the power. The aristocracy had the power not the money. The bourgeoisie decided to take it all in 1789
Numerous provincial lower aristocrats fought and died in the armies of the 1st Republic and 1st Empire (Napoleon I). A good number volunteered under a modified name and got battlefield commissions up to general rank, like Antoine de Lassalle.
I known it was a bit of a fluke but I'm liking the new stabilized obs video as you can track the shot in flight
Same, i just realized the vapor trails, looks dope as hell
Same honestly.
Yes. Please keep doing this.
Also liked the bullet trace very much. From watching that it was very clear Henry hit the 500 yd gong on the second last shot. The scope and camera was set up very well to allow us to see rthe bullet trace very consistently. It was there for each shot. Excellent scope and camera work, much appreciated.
As someone almost entirely unfamiliar with the MAS 49/56, I'm impressed with it. Any service rifle that can send it accurately out to 350m is fine with me.
It was my first rifle in the french army. It was quite fun to shoot with!
I agree. We tend to forget how small a real target (an enemy acting just slightly sensible and tactial (lying prone and trying to not get shot)) is at 350 meters (~400 yards) and how much training it takes to hit such targets while perhaps being shot at yourself.
There is a significant and marked difference between firing a rifle on a range, having all the time you need and no risk to yourself, and using the same rifle as a weapon in war.
As a swiss, I thought that 300m was standard for a service rifle
@@zeta1593 300m is very much the standard for rifles of that era, it really wasn't until the 70s that some countries expected accuracy out to 500 meters or greater.
Ian is so underrated in the gun community it’s sad. Kid is like all the old guys that taught me guns. But in a young form. Hell do a lot for the gun community in his time.
Well.. He just did an interview with the guy who founded the GIGN on the reasons why they chose the MR73 (and a ton of other cool factoids about GIGN's training regime). So he's certainly starting to get the recognition he deserves. The guy is 78 years old now, so I doubt he just comes running for the asking of an average Joe.
Is Ian really underrated though? I thought he's, like, a legend among firearm historians
And is so versed in Fudd Lore that he will beat you over the head with a bayonet when you're wrong.
I would hardly call Ian from forgotten weapons underrated. Even two years ago he was very well known.
Underrated? Maybe 12 years ago, when the RUclips channel was just to supplement his articles on the website
Bullet trails are impressive in this one.
Ya they are very distinct I practically could follow where every shot landed kinda freaky in all honesty haha
I am soooo happy to see others, like Henry, confirm through demonstration how well French rifles actually perform and are engineered for performance.
The bit about Ian simply sensing a French rifle being used gets this video a like.
Image stabilization is a win here, maybe not a mistake after all
"Happy little accidents."
I love how you can see the vapor trail on the stabilized video
Sadly, I love this channel so much that I dug in a 450 yd sniper range at my acreage. I added a double decker platform at one end. And now I’m buying rifles of different calibers and scopes to go with them.
And one of my rifles is an M39 lol
"someone's talking about french rifles,...." OMG hot coffee out the nose 😂😂😂
Now I know how to summon Gun Jesus on command.
LOL That thumbnail is magnificently glorious
When that cosmoline hits...
The reason I am watching the entire video
POV: when you secure a reliable provider for 32 french long ammo
The animated Ian got me lol
I like how the bigger challenge is not shooting ironsights through winds to "long" distances but converting metrics to imperials.
I've finally come to the video that folks have been PMing me about~
That said, what an enlightening collab between two great minds in the firearms sphere. Much to learn from Henry and Ian as always, their content has always been top-notch, educational, and inspiring to me as an illustrator and a firearms enthusiast. Thanks for the quality content, and for the pleasant surprise of my artwork getting a quick feature. I really do appreciate that!
I like your art, pretty good.
These two are awesome intelligent ballistic conversations.
The bowshock trailing off the shots at the 400yd line was amazing!
As usual, Henry is a fantastic shot handling all that wind
hahaha. i cannot fully express how much i loved the scope passing bit.
This new spotting stabilization camera looks dope. We can actually see the vapor trails now
Hi, in the mid 80's during my first two month instruction in the french army I had the occasion to shoot a lot with the mas 49/56. As far as I remember, the gun was very precise at 200m, with more than decent grouping. Grouping at 400m were inconsistent for average shooters (such as me), but some could make a very good job with it. The gun at this distance was a kind of snipping talent early detection.
But it was clearly not meant for long distance shooting with the original iron sights. It was meant to be a day to day infantery rifle. More or less as Famas was. I don't remember shooting with it at more than 200m.
Anyway thanks to both of you for this nice video.
Combat rifle, combatvrange, 2-300 meters. When I did my military service with the Famas, the normal training distances for the average soldier were 25m and 50m with close quarter sights, and 200m prone.
Same here préparation militaire avec le 49/56 puis service avec Famas.
Years ago I traded out an Iver Johnson M1 Carbine for a MAS 49/56, MAS 36 rechambered in .308 and a Type 99 Arisaka with Mum, dust cover, and monopod.
The guy wanted to get rid of his "foreign crap".
I made out on that deal years later like a MF.
With the Chrysanthemum? Wow
The image isn't as crisp when it's digitally stabilized, but you I feel like you can see the vapor trail and bullet trajectory better. Weird! Call it a happy little accident?
The FM 24/29 behind Ian is such a cool gun, one of the most iconic French firearms of the 20th century
The casual nature with which you passed the scope back and forth without hesitation or cracking a smile is just fantastic.
Henry never ceases to impress with his ability to accurately shoot with such varied weapon systems. Different sights, loads, actions...doesn't matter. Much respect.
Absolute perfection. The intro, the shooting, the thumbnail. All of it
It's super cool you got Ian McCollum and Forgotten Weapons got together for this one.
Really like the stabilized image. Should do that everytime. Cool being able to follow the flight path
Thanks guys to both of you.
Excellent video with plenty of very nice jokes.
As a french dude who did his " Service National " 35 years ago (j'étais de la 86/12, au cas où un français lise ça), I was stationed in Germany, and this is the rifle I used during this time.
Very moved to have seen this rifle living one more time after all those years.
BTW, I was trained, briefly, to use it for grenade launching and we used a special blank cartridge to fire the grenade.
It was very powerful and we were told VERY SERIOUSLY (boot kicking the ass) to NEVER shoulder it, only, ONLY use it the butt well propped on the ground and secured with the boot.
Anyway, thanks a lot one more time.
Mille mercis depuis le pays du vin et des fromages.

I really loved the stabilized footage. It made it so easy to see the vapor trails and impacts. I would love to see more stabilized footage when stretching out to slightly longer ranges.

One more wish: Henry, keep using post production stabilization since now. The video result is great and was really enjoyable to see the trajectory of the projectile before it hit the target. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Thanks for putting the video up.
I once had to drive 2 trucks full of them from a French base to another 25 years ago. At first glance and after weighting and looking at them by all angles, these rifles gave me a real impression of sturdiness and simplicity. Much more than the famas I was issued with.
You and Ian are a great match. I really hope there are more collaborations coming up! Perfect to see the weapon in action then hear all about it

Henry and Ian, I love and enjoy both your channels. I was a USN Gunner's mate and I always enjoy and am humbled by your must greater trigger time with the long guns than I had during my four years active duty (87-91.) I owned a 49/56 for a number of years. Bought it at a gun show because I knew nothing about it.
Absolutely one of my favorite rifles to own and especially to shoot. Used it as my deer rifle for a number of those years too.

Absolutely love this rifle. I have had one for a few years and with 135Grn flat base bullets loaded to a similar velocity as their service round... spooky accurate.
Wow. GREAT Review, guys. Thank you, Thank you for taking the time on this.
Henry, great shooting! and Ian, great calls and presentation. I can listen you guys all day. Great humor, great history, great education! You confirmed some of my speculations; and, I learned SO much more! IAN, your comment early on with regards to the MAS sight .... and being able to pick up your target quicker...was my biggest gripe about my service weapons. Particularly since we were operating so often in low light/ windy/ dusty/ crappy conditions with iron sights (Army 2nd RGR Bn). I am so glad you guys did this in the windy conditions. That is exactly what I want to see. Henry, I liked being able to see the quick adjustments you were making with the sights! Man, I would have loved to have been able to do that with my rifle.
I tuned in to learn a bit about the MAS. In the service, I learned AR, M14, and AK platforms. Many years (and many donuts) later; I became familiar with my first M1 Garand from the CMP. My father had one in Korea, and I wanted to see what he had to deal with. Later, I had hoped for an M14, but they are just too expensive for me. I discovered the MAS only recently, online; and, it seemed to answer all the 'wants' I had yearned for while in the service ('88 -'93). You both hit on all the performance and maintenance points about which I was curious...and answered much more! I wanted one of these before watching this video; and, now you guys really put the bug in me to get one. I hate you both. Ok. I'm over it. See you on the next review :)
The corrected target view gives we the viewers more information about the shots, nice touch.
As usual, amazing video to watch for entertainment whilst also learning something. Thank you.
Although it was technically a mistake, the post processing image stabilisation is amazing and if it's not too much work (I don't do video editing so I'm not sure on this) it would be awesome to see it used more.
I think he has the same microphone that Ian sometimes uses, the one that’s made at the khyber pass
I made those for them.
I'm not sure how much work is involved with the image stabilization but that that was absolutely amazing! You could see the vapor trail for every shot and it follow it in. I hope you continue to do this because I think it really elevated the viewing experience!
Another amazing video! Excellent content, very informative, and you got Ian!! I love how you show real practical accuracy and take the time to break down and discuss your results. Thank you so much for the videos. My absolute favorite channel on RUclips, and dare I say, the best gun channel out there! Cheers from Idaho.
That scope hando-off at 14:55 actually confused me for a second lol. Great video and good shots considering the wind conditions.
This was an awesome video, absolutely loved the historical and technological breakdown.
Very nice collaboration between the channels. Much appreciated! Please send more videos.
Wow, I just want to say that this was awesome guys! I've had my MAS 49/56 for about a year now and I've just been fascinated by it since. I did replace the firing pin with a titanium one before I shot it and haven't had a slam fire as of yet.
The ammo issue you talk about with the old surplus VS PPU is all too true. It plagued me early on with short cycling issues and a bent lip on a magazine. After I sorted it out, I used only PPU and have had zero issues. Yes, While PPU isn't the best, it does run very well in the MAS 49/56.
I love the sight picture and ergonomics but im surprised that you didn't mention anything about the trigger! A great military style trigger, though a little heavy in the pull, the break is clean and light - well on mine at least.
Great video & thank you guys! I'll be taking it to the range this Sunday I hope. Try to put a good grouping down in celebration of this video. I mean I've only been asking for this for like 11 months now 😂
Side note: Those scopes were like $500 last year and I slept on it...regretting not getting it later when I saw it over $1000 😭
