    Following the SOPMOD Block II program to upgrade the U.S. Special Operation Forces Operator's main weapon system, the URG-I (Upper Receiver Group - Improved) was phased in for service in 2018.
    Since then, the URG-I has become the "multipurpose" upgraded M4A1, frequently seen in the hands of the latest generation of U.S. SOF operators.
    How well does the latest (and possible the last) upgrade of the M4A1 perform? We take a standard Geissele "near-clone" M4A1 upper to the range for testing.

    I was one of the first 91F to convert uppers to the URGI configuration and I can't thank you enough for explaining to the clone community that we use multiple vendors. We had rosco mfg for the first couple of runs and I will put money on there being at least 2 other companies supplying barrels due to how fast the m855a1 is killing barrels. Clone guys are wild out here saying it's this and that when it's multiple suppliers. When we fist started the conversion they hadn't even finished the maintenance plan for replacement parts. So it literally can be anyone outside of rosco mfg now.

    When it comes to Cloning rifles: my interpretation has usually been 1) Does it look like the target item & 2) is it in the spirit of the target item. I was a 91F, and yeah, you get components made by different subcontractors. As long as it meets spec, it doesn't matter who made it. When you start cloning something, it really comes down to how pedantic you want to be about it. Usually the more pedantic you want to be, the less likely it is your friends will want to hear about it.

      If you want to build a clone, all that matters is it looks the same (as similar as possible) and is just as good / works the same
      Hell, where I live the closest you'll ever get to M24 is Remington M700 and those clones sometimes do even better, I know a sniper who has built a clone of M24 for military (he wanted to fight with his own rifle) and he managed to get a .24 inch group with it. To touch on the replacement parts procurement side of things, the reason why "mil spec" exists is for this very reason. Mil spec is not in fact garbage, the requirements for something to be actual, real, "mil spec" are quite specific, and the testing requirements for mil spec are extremely rigorous. Mil spec even goes so far as to make hard requirements on how waste material will be disposed of during manufacturing, because they consider scrap to be a component of the classified data package. This is what allows the Military to go to basically anybody with the full technical package of what they need and have those parts made, and it goes well and beyond firearms and firearms accessories as well.
    End of the day, the Military doesn't care who made the barrel, who made the hand guard, who made the pins, what they care about is, is it a cold hammer forged barrel of such length, finished as required? Is this hand guard compatible with the ones they're using, and is equivalently designed? Are these pins made to ANSI specifications?

    • @9HoleReviews
      @9HoleReviews  3 месяца назад +53

      People like tossing "milspec" in with "lowest bidder" as if the two are interchangeable also, not realizing that the specification is going to be met by company A and B the same, regardless of if company B charges more. Best part of milspec is knowing if I snag a part for a gun, that it will physically fit with other milspec parts (provided the QC was done properly).

    • @UMADBRO64
      @UMADBRO64 3 месяца назад +11

      @@9HoleReviews 100%. That also said, if they knew the extensive gauging and destructive testing a lot of genuine manufactured to mil-spec standards requires, a whole lot of people would be singing a completely different song about certain manufacturers and mil-spec in general.

With how many URGI’s that have gone out the door to USASOC with MK12 gas blocks, this is the first time I’ve heard anything with it. Maybe Geissele caught the problem and switch to their gas block to go with their rail. From what I’ve seen, the Geissele barrels are top shelf. Exceptional accuracy, great gas port sizing and very nice finishes.
    I’m a big Daniel Defense fan as well. They are actually similar in production. Both are cold hammer forged and chrome plated. Both barrels are lapped before and after chrome plating for excellent accuracy.
    Both barrels are truly excellent, you will be happy with your URGI or Super Duty regardless of the barrel, whether it be DD or Geissele in-house.

    An interesting fact about Colt barrels: even the older Colt barrels may or may not be manufactured by Colt. Some old Colt barrels were stamped with a "G" on the barrel extension signifying they were manufactured by Green Mountain Rifle Barrell Company. Colt subcontracted them back in the early days of GWOT. These are excellent old-school TDP-like barrels.

    Also really important to note the Geissele enhanced Bolt and carrier....
    The Carpenter 158+ FORGED bolt and enhanced carrier is a huge improvement over a standard BCG in terms of strength, and longevity, as well as reliability.
    The process of forging the bolt just creates far more strength, on top of the fact they work directly with Carpenter steel to produce the C158+ which is stronger in and of itself to begin with.
    And also a little touches such as the cam pin only being able to be inserted one way, effectively doubling its life ect.
    And the nanoweapon Coating is amazing as well. The entire thing is just a recipe for an amazing dedicated fighting/Duty carbine

    Regarding the collecting and cloning world sometimes the military will do other things that also make it more complicated. With the M17 pistol the very first pistols delivered to the Army had FDE controls on FDE frames and slides. So Sig sold a collector's edition on the commercial market that had FDE controls while the base commercial M17 had black controls on FDE frames and slides. But then the Army decided they didn't want FDE controls so not only did new pistols get delivered with black controls (on FDE frames and slides) they sent back all the early pistols for black controlled replacements. So is the M17 with FDE controls clone correct or only the one with black controls? It depends on the the unit and the year you use as a reference. That's just a recent example I'm familiar with, I can only imagine what other stories could be told about different weapons in different eras with different militaries.

      @@henrygonzalez360 ok, i just looked Yep their there alright, I'd still like to see em sell the upper exclusively maybe one day they'll list it. that said, they have a 30rd mag listed @125$ on the top end with a 8 rd mag @70$ on the low end, a rich mans game for sure.

    Henry we agree - you have collectors that may not correlate or validate suitable substitutions or locally manufactured to specification. You still owe me an upper - I already have a Super Duty so, an FDE URGI would be swell.

    I have this same rifle and it’s a banger. Hands down best one I own.

    People in highpower rifle competition have been doing this for many years- buy the cheapest upper and lower you can get, put a good trigger in it, put a good free floated barrel in it, and it will truly shoot 1MOA with good ammunition. An expensive upper or lower is nice and is made with nicer parts, better looking parts, and some of the parts may last longer, but it is doubtful if any of that translates into smaller group sizes.
