Wasn't the Enterprise-J supposed to be something like 3km long? A _Universe_ class ship, designed to go to the farthest reaches of the galaxy.
So though it looks sleek and thin, it's actually massive.

    • @Daedalus-BC308
      @Daedalus-BC308 3 года назад +21

According to the original designer, it was designed to explore other neighboring galaxies and had it's own on board Starfleet Academy to train new crew without returning to Earth.

I actually hated it when I first saw it. Many of the common reasons were validly in my mind. And yet, as I've gotten to examine it closer, and had the chance to fly one in Star Trek Online, it has somehow become one of my utmost favorites. The problem is one of perspective. At a distance, it looks awkward and spindley, but it was never made to be seen at a distance. Zoom in on it. Let its size dominate the screen. Picture it like the angelic counterpart to the Star Destroyers from Star Wars. Swooping into star systems like a floating titan, shadowing over lesser ships as a mother might do in nature... if you let it be the backdrop of the scene, it becomes awe inspiring and quite beautiful. And when you realize those pylons are among the thickest in Federation history, and only seem spindley due to its relative massive size, it becomes much less goofy feeling.
In fairness though, I'll admit... my own tastes always run counter to the norm. The Future Enterprise D is my absolute favorite design, not only in spite of all the awkward extra bits, but because of them. The way they add an edge of jaded barbarism to what was designed as a peaceful cruise liner, the agressive accentuations to such a flowing ship, it feels like a whole new dimension's been added to the character of the ship... without going overboard to parody, like Warship Voyager did. It's like the Enterprise D grew up from its youthful dream of peaceful exploration and became a pragmatic ass-kicker. Spare nacelle, real guns, aggressive new angles... It feels somehow more real than the unmodified Galaxy did. Purity defiled, yet hope untarnished.

Much as I appreciate the J for what it was. A future version of a ship meant to capture the idea of a future Star Fleet, my favourite has to be the original Enterprise. There are better layouts of the general shape but the original shows near perfect proportions based on the golden ratio.
Also, it lets me point out that these ships were designed with the size of the telly in mind. the TOS Enterprise was built for a 4:3 TV which allows it's proportions to shine through. Looking at STD's Enterprise you can see what being made for a 16:9 TV has done. It's stretched it out and flattened the ship which ironically is what the E did... though I think the E did it better being made for Cinema screens.

The Wings on the Enterprise B. was designed so Kirk could get killed. Also if she was a regular Excelsior ship her secondary hull would have been blown to dust.

Enterprise refit is the best ship.
It looks good from every angle. No matter which direction you look at it... all its parts are proportional & gracefully tie into each other.

Excelsior refit makes more sense tho as it’s got sulus daughter so it’s clearly newer then the excelsior as she’s least 18 so when was she born before or after sulu took command of the excelsior so refit makes sense you do want the flag ship of the federation to be the most advanced ship in starfleet tho it’s just a minor refit

That's up there high on my list too. #2 or #3 for me! It has a submarine feel to it. Love the "Polarize the hull plating"! Phase cannons. The torpedoes couldn't be any more primitive! I love the relationship that formed with the Andorians. Their make-up was the best Andorian shown. All others looked unreal with the cheap fake looking antennas. Probably my favorite Star Trek series. Everything was done to perfectly that screamed as a logical first step in Earth's effort of early exploration. AND THEN THOSE IDIOTS CANCELLED IT RIGHT WHEN IT WAS GETTING GOOD! I wanted to see the Earth Romulan War. Very disappointing in the way it was treated by the Bragga.

The Enterprise-D Galaxy-upgrade from "All Good Things..." was a throw back to an old starship class recognition chart from the 80's, originally made by Aridas Sofia and Todd Guenther in the late 80's as a silhouette chart. The D-refit is an application of the Federation class. And the Vengeance in Into Darkness, to only the die-hardest fans, was immediately recognizable as a Dreadnought by its build and profile. I actually screamed in the theater.

The original design concept the Enterprise C (Narendra class in STO) is one of my favourites. It's unfortunate that they had to make the design simpler to shorten construction process so they could fit into the tight production schedule.
Also the original concept for the Enterprise J actually has an secondary hull and bulkier nacelle pylons.

This was a very good ranking, especially as you even threw in some of the rarer ones. Here's my Top 5 ranking, as best I can think:
    1. Enterprise-E, I just love the way it looks inside and out. It's sleek, manoeuvrable (especially in Nemesis) and has a more warm, modern feel on the inside. Probably one of my favourite Bridges too.
    2. Enterprise-D, which was my first and the one I grew-up with. It may be massive and slow but it's still homely and gets extra-cool points for the Saucer-Separation.
    3. Enterprise-A, NOT the refit but there's just something I loved about this. It might've been the reuse/redress of the TNG sets for the interior (apart from the Bridge, although that's still cool!). It's another one I grew-up watching and consider iconic.
    4. Enterprise-B, even though we only saw it onscreen once (unless you count the Lakota on DS9), I'm a big fan of the Excelsior-Class and actually liked the little design changes for the Mark 2 Excelsior. It's longer and bigger than the A and feels like a natural progression on the interior.
    5. Discovery Enterprise, I loved the more-modern take on the TOS Enterprise and actually wish they'd used this design in the JJ Abrams movies. It fits right in with both Discovery and even the whole modern era from TNG onwards. The exterior and Bridge look so faithful to the original TOS designs but updated carefully to fit into the Discovery era. I definitely look forward to seeing it again in "Strange New Worlds".

  • @EdKolis

I find it interesting how the Kelvin timeline's Enterprise-A looks more like the original Enterprise from TOS than that timeline's actual original Enterprise.

    • @Shinyspddmn
      @Shinyspddmn 3 года назад +2

Another interesting thing is that all of the kelvin films (2258-2263) take place before the bulk of TOS (2254, 2265-2269). So it's entirely possible that somewhere in those 2 years between Beyond and TOS there could be another refit to bring it more inline with the TOS ship.

  • @daiatnara971
    @daiatnara971 3 года назад +7

Unpopular opinion time: I don't have much love for the Sovereign class. It's not really the design's fault, it's more that I never felt the stories it featured in imbued it with much of the warmth and spirit that the other prominent Enterprises (as opposed to cameos like the B and C) had - Insurrection came closest with the daily-life scenes on board, but that was held back by, well, it being Insurrection, while First Contact and Nemesis just made it seem to me like a video game battleship, not anybody's home. That aside we're in agreement a lot, love the D, the Constitution refit, and the NX (not so much from the show, but building an NX-01 model kit gave me a lot of affection for her).
I hadn't really considered that Archer's meddling with the timeline might have resulted in a different version of the future which had a better Enterprise-J - that's a pleasant thought.

    • @Shinyspddmn
      @Shinyspddmn 3 года назад +4

What bugs me about the Sovereign is that it wasn't given a proper introduction like most of the others, even the Enterprise-B got a proper introduction and it had maybe 30 minutes of screentime, the E was kinda just shoehorned in like "btw, this is the Enterprise now"

STO is actually in a sort of gray area. There are a few pieces of media that are foundations for STO’s story, but have been made non-canonical, like Data being in command of the Enterprise E during the Romulan supernova event and beyond. The captain of the F even said that Data requested him to command the next Enterprise personally in some missions. Eaglemoss should not be taken as a reliable source unless otherwise stated by CBS/Paramount

Although the Enterprise XVC-330 doesn’t appear in Archer’s ready room, it DOES however appear on the wall of the 602 Club where Archer and his Starfleet colleagues used to hang out-thus reaffirming its canonicity. I, too, love this design-and it ties perfectly in with Vulcan warp technology, implying a technology exchange early-on.
I agree that the TMP refit deserves the top spot as the most esthetically beautiful version of the Enterprise. Esthetically, it’s absolutely my favorite. On the other hand, I cannot help but be emotionally connected to the TOS original-because it is the original. The nostalgia simply can’t be overcome. The TMP refit is prettier, but the TOS original, in my mind, is the clear “flagship” of the franchise. Not to mention, it’s a beautiful and graceful design in its own right. She’s the queen.

I know I'm a year late, but I agree with almost everything you said. Many are fan created (not canon), but my favorite is the Enterprise G. It's the greatest warship the Federation created. Phasers as hot as the sun and ready for quantum torpedoes to finish the job.
The one I agree with the most is the comments on the Enterprise E (Sovereign). It's like the Galaxy class, but it's sleek, faster, more maneuverable, and loaded with firepower. Plus it has ablative hull armor, otherwise that Scimitar would have made shorter work of it 😄
And I'm not the only person to call it this online, but the Galaxy class was a heavily armed cruise ship (I call it the Love Boat with weapons 🤣).

I think the Kelvin universe ones would be lower for me, because the chromey hot rod-ness of them irks me. Plus the whole frolicing around in atmospheres using roman candles to stabilise themselves. I know, I know, NX Enterprise did it too but in its defence that's a smaller ship. I just unboxed my Eagle Moss NCC-1701-A today funnily enough and like you it's very much the mother of all Enterprises for me. It's the big screen Enterprise, you know?

@ 1:24, I am unfamiliar with the naval vessel shown, but, of all the ships named "Enterprise" that served in the U.S. Navy, none have ever been a destroyer or cruiser. Instead, all steel-hulled vessels were aircraft carriers, and each had their own remarkable histories. In fact, even though ENTERPRISE (CVN-65) has been decommissioned, and, at present, no ships bearing the name "Enterprise" are on the active rolls, USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-80) is scheduled to be commissioned in 2028.
USS ENTERPRISE (CV-6) was the most decorated ship in WWII. "The Grey Ghost", USS ENTERPRISE saw conflict in the Pacific theatre against the Imperial Japanese naval forces, earning 20 battle stars - the most for ANY U.S. warship during WWII, and was also the most decorated.
USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65) was the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Fun fact: She is actually not a "Nimitz" class carrier, because she was a testbed for nuclear power viability onboard carriers, she belongs to her own class, "Enterprise". She also had eight nuclear reactors, far more than the Nimitz' two plants, four rudders, and a more cruiser-like hull design. She is immediately recognizable from the Nimitz-class carriers, in that her "island" is more square-shaped than the Nimitz' sleeker, long rectangular shapes. She was also jokingly nicknamed the "Mobile Chernobyl" by her crew, although no nuclear incidents ever occurred (the U.S. Navy has never had a nuclear incident in the entire history nuclear power has been used onboard ships and boats, a testament to the excellent nuclear power program birthed by ADM Hyman Rickover.)
USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-80) while not yet in service, it should be noted that a portion of steel from (CVN-65) was melted down and remade into a keel plate for (CVN-80).

The connection points between the engineering section and the saucer/ nacells have been shortened and beefed up. This brings these critical areas closer to this ships center mass.

I'm going to repeat myself, I'm absolutely sure there's an emotional element to choosing our favorite Enterprise. IMHO I do not see the NX-01 as an Enterprise, it's an "Akiraprise". But I love her design, It stands as one of my favorite Era/production design ever. So...
#1 - NCC -1701 - Refit/A - Timeless, classy, all the right proportions and scale.
#2 - NCC -1701 - B - The Excelsior class refit - It makes a lot of sense to me see an Enterprise as an Excelsior Class, and I know this is one of the "emotional element" speaking. I remember watching ST III and wishing Kirk would steal the Excelsior instead of the Enterprise. I just love its design and I think they tweaked it enough for the Generations movie - specially the bridge with all those blue and green Okudagrams.
#3 - NCC -1701 - D Talk to me about those ROUND lines! That is the one I would like to live in.
    #4 - NCC - 1701 - DISCO/SNW Such a perfect redesign. I wish THAT were the JJprise.
#5 - NCC - 1701 - E - For all the "homages" she carries on her design, though I'm not a fan of the HUGE Impulse thrusters making it look line a hunchback SUV... Still far better than the G (Ew!) J and F.

While I understand the kelvin movies are hated among the fandom I love both ship designs and have them in my top 5 especially the A version in Beyond. But my top 5 is
    NCC 1701 ( Discovery)
    NCC 1701-A (Kelvin)
    NCC 1701-A ( Prime)
    NCC 1701 TOS
    Enterprise E

Too me the D looks like the old cartoons of bulldogs, with the massive head and chest, and then the little legs in back. The ship always looks to top heavy to me, and would have been better to me if the nacelles had been a bit bigger and not tucked away like they were.

the reason i love the odyssey so much is it merges my two favorite enterprise designs (the d and e) signifiying a movement forward of ideology from the dominion war of "were going back to exploring... but were ready for your shit" looks over at the klingon empire after hobus. and it also adds a defiant like ship as an auxiliary ship which i think is such a cool idea (plus adds another favorite design)

Enterprise A refit is my first love! When I saw it on a TV I fell in love with Sci-Fi, with space, my imagination just exploded... I love the mighty Soverign, and super cool Galaxy, Excelsior is beautifull modern retro ship, NX is just spectacular and my second favourite Ambasador deserved it's own series, but... You never forget your first...

Odyssey class enterprise F is my favorite. It's like the D and the E blended. Little bit elongated with some more warship type lines like the E but back to being a big honkin floating city. And I absolutely love the split neck with the windows down the inside.

ENT-J: You don't need to worry about solar winds esp when your deflector shield from the array is massive enough to encompass a small moon. However, I am a fan of the J design I wish I could see it more in shows rather than STO. But this is the 26th c vessel so why not go a bit more sleek, very aerodynamic; but it fits the class of a carrier due to it's size, so unless it's very maneuverable, it's more of a command heavy assault ship.

just found this video, and it inspired me to revise and expand my own listing of the STARSHIPS Enterprise that I recently posted elsewhere, from best to worst:
01.: UFP Starfleet "Galaxy"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D (TNG)
02.: UFP Starfleet "Ambassador"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C & UFP Starfleet "Sovereign"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E (TNG movies)
03.: UFP Starfleet "Odyssey"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-F (STO)
04.: UFP Starfleet "Excelsior"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B (GEN)
05.: UFP Starfleet "Galaxy"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, refit (AGT)
06.: UFP Starfleet "Constitution"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (DSC)
07.: UNE Starfleet "NX"-class, SS Enterprise NX-01, refit (ENT S5)
08.: UNE Starfleet "NX"-class, SS Enterprise NX-01 (ENT)
09.: UFP Starfleet "Enterprise"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701, refit / USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A (TOS movies)
10.: UFP Starfleet "Constitution"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (TOS)
    11.: UFP Starfleet "Universe"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-J
    12.: UNE Starfleet "Declaration"-class, SS Enterprise XCV-330
13.: UFP Starfleet "Constitution"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (JJ movies)
14.: UFP Starfleet "Constitution"-class, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A (JJ movies)
I have excluded all the maritime Enterprises here, for obvious reasons.
Also, I've decided to put the Ent-C & Ent-E as a shared 2nd place because I go back & forth between which one gets 2nd and which one gets 3rd. Also, TMP refit & Ent-A share a spot because the differences between them are too miniscule to warrant separate rankings. Same with the different incarnations of the Ent-E & JJ-Trek Ent-0.

YES you sir took the words like a Betazoid from my head! "Art deco" stylings the refit is the best! 100% Except as a child playing with the model the warp engines were prone to snap off and then without Gorilla Glue "because it had not been invented yet" made the model for decommissioning many times....

I know this will likely anger many people, but I sincerly think the way saucer, neck and secondary hull look like on the Kelvin Enterprise is just beautiful and to me they are the best interpretation of the Constitution class we have seen. What really lets the ship down, but what I'm willing to overlook are nacelles, (too big and busy, too close together) and to lesser degree their pylons (weirdly curved though flowing well with the neck line). Just don't look up the Beyond version, they actually butchered that saucer/neck/secondary hull line in that movie. Look at the original or Into Darkness version.

I am going to give you a big thumbs up. I have been a Trekie since 1966 when I was 3 years old. I have put together Star Trek models from the age of 5. I noticed the number problems in TOS when it aired. I think the Enterprise F that they picked should have been G and there was one design that was similar but didn't split the support neck, so I think they missed the opportunity. They could always use it as a different star ship class though.
    Anyway good job on comparisons.

The Enterprise 1701 from Discovery would probably have worked very well back in 1968 and would have fit in better with today's trick. However Matt Jeffries was of his own era and the Enterprise took on the look of a Navy vessel of the period. It was what it was we would like it to be more updated and possibly that's what they should have done with the JJ Abrams universe but JJ's a twerp, and he went another direction

My only real disagreement with this list is that I'd have put the TOS Enterprise NCC 1701 (No bloody A, A, C or D...!) quite a bit higher, for no other reason than that she's the original - without it we'd have no Star Trek - and that she's the Enterprise I grew up with. Having said that, I would put the TMP refit and the E above her.
And then, of course, there was her entry in the DS9 episode 'Trials and Tribble-ations'... That was quite a 'hairs on the back of my neck' moment...

Wasn't the TOS Enterprise intentionally designed to look fragile with thin pylons to indicate that advanced materials science in the future allowed the Federation to build such a ship? Also, wasn't it flipped vertically, such that it was going to fly with the saucer and nacelles on the bottom, but someone happened to pick up the model and turn it over and thought it looked better with them on top?

Regarding the Enterprise B, it was established as early as Encounter at Farpoint, that there was an Excelsior Class Enterprise.
    static.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/images/7/77/Enterprise_legacy.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/663?cb=20120730022321&path-prefix=en
I knew well before Generations that the B was Exelsior, and it was a pleasant surprise to finally see it in action. This was not just laziness on Berman's part, wanting to reuse the model. It was already in canon.

Really? The B in the the bottom? It’s an Excelsior, literally one of if not the best ship design in Star Trek. And the ambassador above it? Have you seen the alternate design for it that was much better, even that was worse than Excelsior.
