I don't think either is better than the other. I'd like to hear them sing this song together, the sweetness and darkness. I love how this song is deep and dark; and I like how Amy's version is light and sweet. They are both wonderful women with both good voices; no need for comparison. I rest my case.
But then she and Jack sing together and say "it's plain as anyone could see, we're simply meant to be" and that's the most beautiful love story known to exsistence 💓 I think it will remain so
Helena Bonhan Carter’s version at the Royal Albert Hall, although it’s not a proper studio version nor a proper filmed video, is perfect as well. Has that teathrical tone lacking in both Fiona’s and Amy’s as they’re singers and not actresses. Her timbre is pretty amazing.
I love this version way better. Her voice sounds depressed and gloomy. I prefer it way better than high pitch. I know most people disagree so I had to comment.
Amy's version sounds sad but hopeful, as if Sally feels she can be with jack but can't because she feels useless, while fiona's version sounds as if Sally already knows she can't be with jack and is just depressed because she will never be with jack.
I love the dark melodic simplicity of this version. I have always enjoy the raspy passionate gothic/blues style of Fiona's voice and feel that am happy that she has kept the organic feel this song had in Nightmare Before Christmas... I can still see the skeletons playing in the background... by the way i am also a huge fan of Tim Burton!
I think the background music really completes the song with her voice. It just matches it perfectly, a very good choice. (No, I will not compare this to Amy Lee's version, since both interpretations are different.)
Amazing John Brion...a brilliant producer. Worked with her on the first 2 albums and also on the third, but did not make it to the final cut, so i really recommend looking for it online and listening to it! Its far superior to the version on the stores and on Spotify...
this version sounds very emotional and deep. Like it the song crawls into your heart and expands to all corners sorrowfully. I love Fiona's voice like this so much, it's perfection.
AS much as Amy Lee was my vocal icon for my first years singing because of its heaviness and purity, I think the roughness of Fiona's voice fits the song more. This is my favorite version of this song.
Honestly, I think the two of them should do this song in a duet. Both of them singing at the same time would help give the sort of unnatural feel that Sally should have, what with being a leaf-stuffed rag doll.
Personally, I enjoy all of the renditions, since they each exhibit their own emotive qualities. However, this might be my favorite rendition, since I feel it truly represents the melancholy and hopelessness reflected in the lyrics. It sounds more natural when Fiona sings it compared to Amy Lee's version. That's not to say that Amy Lee does not do it justice, but it feels forced. Additionally, the band arrangement is superb in comparison, and the recording is not a slickly polished, heavily produced song like Amy Lee's version. I'll take the wider dynamic range and Fiona's misery conveyed in her voice over a slick, Hollywood-studio product anyday. I'd love to hear a doom-metal rendition of this song.
I love Amy like, she's my favorite singer of all times since I was 8 or 9, but this song it's so dark, vibe, dark ambient, it's just simply sadness, loneliness and hopeless. It's authentic with the Sally's pain, and the instrumental, the drum... GOD! This song it's a trip to the dark side, a sad dark side, with tears and grief... And I LOVE IT. I love be in these dark places with these songs...
Fionna Apple's version has a sick drum beat, and more soul. No competition, in my opinion, Amy Lee's version is pretty, but it sounds pretentious when compared this version.
I never realized how fiona apple really influenced an entire generation of musicians. I literally havent listened to fiona apple since the 90s..now listening to this..I hear her sound in alot of contemporary artists.
Both Fiona Apple and Amy Lee did an amazing job. I prefer Fiona's version though simply because its more my style. Music, like any art form, is incredibly subjective. Stop arguing!
I love having so many interpretations of this song. I was just listening to Amy Lee's for the first time and remembered Fiona's. This is so great. I wonder if any other women have covered this in a different way. It reminds me of I Will Always Love You...how Whitney's version is a heartbreaking song for love lost and Dolly's is a goodbye to a friend. It's beautiful how we get these different interpretations just based on pitch or pauses or the background music. What a time to be alive!!
I love both versions. Amy lee has a beautiful voice to me, and fiona has a nice deep, dark sounding voice i dig. it reminds me of something that would be in a black and white film lol idk or a bonnie and clyde type thing
I think if this were inserted into the film, the feeling Fiona Apple conveys would better fit the context of the film than Amy Lee's rendition. Though it's not to say Amy's isn't beautiful, it certainly is!
Fiona is the best. No questions asked. No other artist in this world is capable of living through every song the way Fiona does. Beautiful human being. Love this woman.
You should check out Meg Myers, if you haven't discovered her yet. I found her through RUclips suggestions while on a Fiona kick. Her songs also are so full of feeling and raw emotion. I've loved Fiona for 20 years so I was an immediate fan of Meg Myers, who also isn't afraid to really put her feelings into song. Good stuff. I really love this cover. Fiona did an amazing job as usual with bringing you into her mind and you can truly feel the emotion that this song portrays.
Both versions are great, but I think this fits the theme more. I dunno, it's just me. Both people, Amy Lee and Fiona Apple, have beautiful voices. This is just a little better.
i looked this up because people on the amy lee version were talking about it and i thought, "oh well, might as well check it out.." i mean, i like both versions. i just think they kinda have different styles of the song, although they both did a good job:)
I know we ALL compare this cover and Amy Lee's, but I think it should be said that when it comes to the two different versions, there's one main difference, for me. With Amy Lee's version, before I even heard it, I knew what it would sound like. I knew that it'd be a slow, mostly piano cover with a huge rock/orchestral crescendo. The melody of the instrumental track was fairly similar to the original composition as well. It was a deliberate marketing move towards the Hot Topic crowd. And there's nothing wrong with any of that. But with Fiona Apple's cover, I feel like there's more artistic license. It's a cover that sounds much more original, which is what a good cover does. It takes artistic freedom, while still paying tribute to the spirit of the original. The feeling leans into the macabre sense of the lyrics, with dragging strings and a low-mid tempo. It's just my personal reasoning that I really do say that I not only prefer this version personally, but with my slightly objective point of view, Fiona does a superior version, not just as a cover, but it's a better song
Fiona's sounds like she's drunk and trying to seduce a man at a jazz club, and there's nothing original in this cover. It actually sounds like a typical Bond song.
I actually agree, I think the song just suited Amy Lee's voice better. This is a good version, but in comparison, Amy lee sounded much more... I dunno, involved with it I guess. She made it sound like she'd been the one to write the song, whereas you can tell this is a cover.
I love this version so much more than Amy Lee's, and trust me when I saw I am a HUGE fan if Amy's. this just fits better with the emotions of the song/scene/movie. Original is best, of course, tho!!!
Amy lees is the best ot shows the love and emotion the charactor has while fiona shows the anger and soul of sallys charactor and catherines version... Well sounds like a cat dying
Woah, this version is WAY diffrent Amy Lee version. Not saying whose better.Fiona talks in a monotonous voice that is unique and entertaining to listen to.The music is diffrent too.Fiona uses a simpler sound with a violin as the main intrument.Amy Lee's version is operatic with more high notes and lots of orchestra music.
Thats very astute of you. I never would have thought to view either of them in that light but after reading your comment I have to agree with you on that. "A smokey bar/lounge setting" huh?
People were arguing about Amy Lee vs Fiona Apple when I watched this video in middle school, and people are still arguing about it as I'm in college. Y'all done yet?
@toshiro10div ur cool dude. apple and lee are both great. i personally think that fiona did it better because she is the only artist that did a cover for this song that actually fits my vocal range. but thats just my opinion. but if i were to judge on who did the most creative cover for the song, i go for lee. yeah.
@Moonloved6 Exactly!! But the guy *I* like, isn't interested in anybody, and said, 'it's not a priority'. And I'm almost 100% sure he thinks I'm a nusance. But the thing is.... He just about literally stepped out of my dreams. He likes everything my dream guy likes, and even LOOKS lie my perfect guy in my head. It's that real. But..... never can it be so, you know?
I like all three versions. The movie for its heart, Fiona's for its weariness and Amy's for its heartbreak.
Don't mix up slowing it down with heartbreak. Fiona's version portrays a lot more heartbreak than Amy's even though it's nowhere near as slow.
janeyrevanescence12 I agree but I think I like fiona better
Sally's Song by Fiona Apple
Lyrics
I don't think either is better than the other. I'd like to hear them sing this song together, the sweetness and darkness. I love how this song is deep and dark; and I like how Amy's version is light and sweet. They are both wonderful women with both good voices; no need for comparison. I rest my case.
"And will we ever end up together? No I think not...."
A quote almost everyone says in their life
Sadly, some more than others lol.
But then she and Jack sing together and say "it's plain as anyone could see, we're simply meant to be" and that's the most beautiful love story known to exsistence 💓 I think it will remain so
Sigh.
amy's is more of a sad, child like love, while fiona's is more of a darker, given up love.
Agreed. Both very fkn melodic. I'm obsessed. Catherine O'Hara immortalized it tho, as Sally.
BLASPHEMY
Fiona’s has lesbian vibes to me
I wish this was on spotify. Her voice is so dark, you know?
It was years ago, but one day they took it off :( I almost wondered if I imagined it until I thought to look on RUclips haha

Her voice hypnotizes me.
AS much as Amy Lee was my vocal icon for my first years singing because of its heaviness and purity, I think the roughness of Fiona's voice fits the song more. This is my favorite version of this song.
Mine too! This and the original with Catherine O'Hara. I don't care for Amy's version...it's too slick and produced...
I really want to hear her sing tears to shed. I love her deep and unique voice!
This tone of this song perfectly portrays the personal emptiness experienced when feelings aren't returned.
this is my favorite version, sooo melancholy!
Why all this need of comparising? I like both version, I think both have his good things.
Honestly, I think the two of them should do this song in a duet. Both of them singing at the same time would help give the sort of unnatural feel that Sally should have, what with being a leaf-stuffed rag doll.
+Sam Saylor same like idk why people don't like both.
Personally, I enjoy all of the renditions, since they each exhibit their own emotive qualities. However, this might be my favorite rendition, since I feel it truly represents the melancholy and hopelessness reflected in the lyrics. "Although I would like to join the crowd, in their enthusiastic cloud, try as I may, it doesn't last" - Depression written in words.
I love Amy like, she's my favorite singer of all times since I was 8 or 9, but this song it's so dark, vibe, dark ambient, it's just simply sadness, loneliness and hopeless. Why the heck did this version not end up on Spotify??? Does anyone know?
it was on there for a bit, but was removed to a contract with fiona i'd assume
I think Lana Del Ray would've also done an incredible job with this song!!
Samantha Sanchez What I'd give for a Lana cover of this !!!
AGREE OMG LET'S PRAY SHE SINGS THIS SONG
SORRY CAPS MY PHONE IS STUCK THIS ONE
OK BYE
*Rey but yes, she would have killed it !!
No
Rey*
Fionna Apple's version has a sick drum beat, and more soul. No competition, in my opinion, Amy Lee's version is pretty, but it sounds pretentious when compared this version.
Say it louder for the people in the back
I never knew Amy Lee had a version? I must hear it.
I love Amy but everything she sings is a little pretinious
I genuinely think they are both lovely. Although I do like the drums on this one are better and Amy’s is a bit more plain
First time hearing this version. The beat and music is great. But fiona's voice is boring.
I never realized how fiona apple really influenced an entire generation of musicians. I literally havent listened to fiona apple since the 90s..now listening to this..I hear her sound in alot of contemporary artists.
I like Fiona's version better
dam right!! same here man. Amy Lee is alright. its just Fiona Apple voice perfect for this song
I love the Fiona Cover.. she sings it with such emotion in her voice.. really brings out Sally's character
Both Fiona Apple and Amy Lee did an amazing job. I prefer Fiona's version though simply because its more my style. Music, like any art form, is incredibly subjective. Stop arguing!
I work at California adventure and during the oogie boogie bash, this is my favorite song on the park wide playlist.
I like this version better don't get me wrong love amy lee but this version just make you go to your dark side
raven arceneaux Same and ikr
Wowed! This is the first time I have ever listened to this version and I definitely don't regret!
I love both versions. Amy lee has a beautiful voice to me, and fiona has a nice deep, dark sounding voice i dig. it reminds me of something that would be in a black and white film lol idk or a bonnie and clyde type thing
Both? There is so many
I like both a lot. Equally. This one has a very melancholy and thoughtful tone, and Amy's is more emotional and pleading. Love both to pieces.
One of my favorite artists doing one of my favorite songs. I just had a braingasm.
Her voice is so powerful I love it
I think every version is lovely :) I may have my own opinions about which version is better, but they are all AWESOME in different ways.
"And will we ever, end up together?
:'-( No i think not, its never to become... for i am not the one."
Really hits me too
i love this song and in my opinion its the best rendition of sallys song her voice captures the the vunerabilty and sadness of sally in tht moment :]
I love this. Beautiful and so haunting, very fitting for her voice.
Now i want this song everytime Helena (from Orphan Black) appears in scene.
I think if this were inserted into the film, the feeling Fiona Apple conveys would better fit the context of the film than Amy Lee's rendition. Though it's not to say Amy's isn't beautiful, it certainly is!
Ehh for a kid movie Catherine's is better suited, for adults who listen and really emotionally relate and feel the lyrics, Fiona.
great, great song
Love this version so much
I love this version better
I love fiona Apple
Fiona could imagine in the feature movie if ever they made one. She could play sally, and sing all the songs.
All the love for Amy Lee, but this version is much more raw. So haunting.
My favorite version! I love it so much!!!!!
Fiona is the best. No questions asked. No other artist in this world is capable of living through every song the way Fiona does. Beautiful human being. Love this woman.

I really love this cover. Fiona did an amazing job as usual with bringing you into her mind and you can truly feel the emotion that this song portrays.
Weirdly, Amy's version has a princess in a tower feel, and Fiona's has a dark, mournful witch vibe.
we all have opinions and I like amys and Fiona's 😍
I first heard this song on here a couple years back and people are still arguing over which version is better, honestly.
I love her voice register beautiful…..
Holy Ball's This is so amazing I LOVE This SO Much
This sounds VAGUELY like a bond song.
VAGUELY.
It sounds very much like a Bond song
duh people she's the best singer EVER ! she is the best singer ever I love Fiona Apple so much
💯💯💯
Both versions are great, but I think this fits the theme more. I dunno, it's just me. Both people, Amy Lee and Fiona Apple, have beautiful voices. This is just a little better.
Oh cool! it’s a song about my romantic life☺️
I love both Fiona Apple's and Amy Lee's versions :)
i looked this up because people on the amy lee version were talking about it and i thought, "oh well, might as well check it out.." i mean, i like both versions. i just think they kinda have different styles of the song, although they both did a good job:)
Freaking love how she make so haunting ♡

great song / great version
luv her voice
Favorite cover of this song
I think this version suits more the 'character', but every version of this song is AMAZING!
yeah it is. This is the toats best song ever
Awesome!! I loved this song!!!
Amy lees is the best ot shows the love and emotion the charactor has while fiona shows the anger and soul of sallys charactor and catherines version... Well sounds like a cat dying

Try as i may it doesn't last
I love this version better
This is the better of all the versions. Not taking anything away from Amy but Fiona's takes the cake for me.
My thoughts exactly. Thanks for explaining it so well
its more darker than amy lee so i LOVE this song!!!!
I like this version more :3
Thats very astute of you. I never would have thought to view either of them in that light but after reading your comment I have to agree with you on that. "A smokey bar/lounge setting" huh?
I love this song :')
I love both versions but to me this is slightly better.
Fionas voice is so timeless and original. Her voice holds up even in today’s “standards”. I love the emotion this version exhumes. Best version IMO
This song is like my life!! ugh i just dont have enough courage to tell him how I feel! :/
this song is soooo sad, I like it.
that's why I like this version
People were arguing about Amy Lee vs Fiona Apple when I watched this video in middle school, and people are still arguing about it as I'm in college. Y'all done yet?
Favorite version🥰
@toshiro10div
ur cool dude. apple and lee are both great. i personally think that fiona did it better because she is the only artist that did a cover for this song that actually fits my vocal range. but thats just my opinion. but if i were to judge on who did the most creative cover for the song, i go for lee. yeah.
The G#min6 is superb.
right? it is supposed to sound creepy. I like it, just like KoRn's Kidnap the Sandy Claws. It just sounds better for the movie!
i love both versions :3
Amy and Fiona should do a featuring for this song.
@Moonloved6 Exactly!! But the guy *I* like, isn't interested in anybody, and said, 'it's not a priority'. And I'm almost 100% sure he thinks I'm a nusance. But the thing is.... I just got the entire Lego Movie as an ad...
AHH! Its the day before the talent show, and i STILL can't get the right note!!!! i'm done for!!!!!!!!!!!!!
