I like this cover the most simply because it's just as dark as the original from the movie. It captures to true sadness and expresses it in a great fashion. You can truly hear the sadness in her voice.
I sense there's something in the wind That feels like tragedy's at hand And though I'd like to stand by him Can't shake this feeling that I have The worst is just around the bend And does he notice my feelings for him? And will he see how much he means to me? I think it's not to be What will become of my dear friend? Where will his actions lead us then? Although I'd like to join the crowd In their enthusiastic cloud Try as I may, it doesn't last And will we ever end up together? no, I think not, it's never to become For I am not the one
Ok, as far as covers go, I like this one best. I feel like it captures the feeling of sadness and defeat the best. Fiona's voice was more dark and I think more appropriate. Don't get me wrong, I LIKE Amy's cover... But she just tried too hard to sound angelic as apposed to, well, sad. That's my opinion, anyway.
+Industrial Savior .. EXACTLY, your opinion holds weight my friend. People might love Celine Dions version too.. but we would know better. Wait, now Amy fans will be mad at the comparison.. nah, I don't care... an operatic voice doesn't work for this tune no matter who it is.
I totally agree with you. It's exactly what I feel when I hear Fiona singing this music. Seems like her voice was "made" to sing this song. There's an absolute tune with the movie and the mood of the song.
I like the depressing quality this song now holds now that Fiona Apple has done it. I believe that Fiona Apple and Amy Lee made this song one of my favorites only because of what they have done to it. Thank you for this. I truly appreciate it!
I'm amazed that this Amy vs. Fiona thing is STILL going on. Seriously, who cares which is better. Stop comparing all three of them to each other. They're all different in their own way which makes them unique. The "debate" is...kinda pointless.
i think this is the better version because it fits the mood better. sally's character has no extreme projection of sorrow, there's just that emptiness that she can't be with jack, and fiona apple's low tones and simpler music better reflects that
I prefer Fiona's version because her tone, it really relates to the song...She sounds saddened, tormented. And its just soothing. Like she's really in sally's shoes. And that's just perfect. c:
Fiona's version convey's the bleak atmosphere of this song in such a way that Amy Lee would need to die, come back to life as a starving child, die again, and come back as a singer with all the memories of her previous life in order to even come close to matching the emotional depth given to us by Fiona Apple on this piece of beauty. Poetry in motion.
I love fiona's version. Amy's version is also good, the difference is that the two sing in different manners and about different things as well. this is more reflective of fiona's style and I like it. it's dark and sad, but subtle all the same. and it gives me the chills.
comparing these two versions is like comparing the genius of Shakespeare with the genius of Einstein ... they're completely different, but both great, both contributing something of a very different quality to what they do. And both amazing!
I just CAN'T decide which version I love the most! I feel something with Amy Lee's version that I don't feel with Fiona's version and vice and versa For this, it's all about feeling, and everything gets complicated when it's based on feelings! But I'm in peace with myself when I say that : they are both AMAZING in different kind of way!!
I love all the versions of this song! Let's just stop arguing over who's best and agree on this one thing: Danny Elfman, who wrote this song, is a genius.
I love Fiona's voice because she's an Alto. Her voice is good for this song because Alto's have the best tones for singing sad songs. Amy is good, but with this song, Fiona delivers it with the right amoung of emotion.
I think you made a good point. Amy captured the emotion but I do think Fiona did a good job capturing the moment of the movie where Sally feels utterly defeated, sad, and despondent because she couldn't see the end of the movie like we can--she can't see the happy ending. Fiona did a good job of capturing that. However imagine this accompaniment with Amy's version it would have been great (I found her music too overpowering),
I love both versions. Fiona's version I see a woman from the 30-40's era singing about her mobster boyfriend she just can't tame. Amy's I see a woman from a Dorian Gray/Frankenstein goth book singing about her love interest she can never have. Both version are beautiful in any case.
I really like her voice. it's like she's so sad that she sounds low on emotion. and I like it. it's not like lots of other songs where the person is sad but they have so much energy. she sounds like she's sad and tired. (which is a good thing for this song) and as for Amy Lee's cover....I like it. it's just as good as this one. it's not the same style though. so why is everyone comparing the two? that would just be saying which style you like better :)
Better than the original version. I don't care what anyone says, that's how I feel. I love The Nightmare Before Christmas, but I always thought that "Sally's Song" was really dippy. Fiona Apple's cover of it really makes the song come alive for me. It's great.
Come on, the versions are completely different. This version is amazing, and it's kinda more "dark" and "spooky". On the other hand Amy's voice just fits SO much to this song. The notes she hits are amazing. She kind of reflects the most "sweet" side of the song but also adds the sorrowful side... anyway.. I like both versions. :)
been a fan of nightmare before christmas since i was 7 =p (now 20) and i really do love this cover, who cares if it relates to the character or how it relates to the movie. Its a damn good cover imo.
@DoYouFearDeath333 I totally agree. I like both versions, but there is a certain darker mood to this version. Exactly as you said, it's as if she's given up hope.
Fiona Apple's version is more dark but it is very strong and good. Amy Lee's version is more romantic and light. Both in essence fit with the film but are different styles. Fantastic versions though!
I do like Amy Lee's version better, but never in a million years would I disregard any song that Fiona sings. They're both WONDERFUL artists, that come from different universes. That's what I think, anyways: complete opposite sides of the musical spectrum.. yet their inspiration for music derives from two common factors: sadness and anger. For the people that don't like Fiona you clearly have never heard any of her original work. Her music-- sorry, her art, is beautiful. Both are.
I like them both. Amy Lee's is very gloomy and has a lot of feeling to it. Fiona Apple's is very emotionless and detached, giving it an overall eerie quality. I love each of them equally for those completely different reasons. They are both just as unique as the singer. : )
To be perfectly honest, I listen to both versions (Sally's, and Amy Lee's), and I've always liked Amy's version better...But now that I heard this version, I think I like this one just a tad bit better
@Hann1099 I find this one infinitely more sad and haunting because you hear such defeat in her voice (and if you listen to fiona's other songs it's different to those). Amy's is pretty, yes, but so was the original one. I happen to like this one because it's different and beautiful still. :)
Maybe it's just cause I'm a boy but growing up Sallys song was so slow that I never enjoyed it nor understood it. It was just too sad. This version actually makes me love it. Her voice has a texture that i don't find AmyLee to have.
Dear lord people stop comparing Fiona and Amy. They're both wonderful. They're both just as good as the other. And why does everyone feel the need to compare EVERYTHING with something? Holy fuck.
This version is quirky and I like it her voice isn't bad I'm not saying it's better or worse than Amy's version because that was beautiful in it's own way. Each artest has there different styles and they both sing this song beautifully so I can't choose which one is better or worse
I love her voice don't get me wrong Amy lees voice is beautiful but with this song Fionas voice fits with this song you can hear the sadnees in her voice that's the whole point in this song emotionless sadness and depression
I like this cover the most simply because it's just as dark as the original from the movie. It captures to true sadness and expresses it in a great fashion. You can truly hear the sadness in her voice.
I sense there's something in the wind
That feels like tragedy's at hand
And though I'd like to stand by him
Can't shake this feeling that I have
The worst is just around the bend
And does he notice my feelings for him?
And will he see how much he means to me?
I think it's not to be
What will become of my dear friend?
Where will his actions lead us then?
Although I'd like to join the crowd
In their enthusiastic cloud
Try as I may, it doesn't last
And will we ever end up together?
no, I think not, it's never to become
For I am not the one
I love this version, it has an 007 feel to it that i like.
Each lady put their own special twist to the song! Love both Amy & Fiona!
One of my favorite songs of all time! Seriously.
I have never heard this version ; however, I am so glad I did this gives the song a new life almost. Thanks for sharing !!!!

+Industrial Savior Can't agree more! Amy Lee does have a very beautiful voice...but Fiona's version is the saddest, most touching one I've ever heard.
I know it's been a minute but... I agree with your comment all the way.
both singers have their strengths, and both give it its own life...two different singers, both great versions!
They both nailed it. One doesn't HAVE to be better than they other. They're both amazing and just as good as the other.
Love this song/version.I can't get it out of my head!!!!
I have to completely agree with you. This song pulls so many heartstrings for me
I totally agree with you. It's exactly what I feel when I hear Fiona singing this music. Seems like her voice was "made" to sing this song. There's an absolute tune with the movie and the mood of the song.
I love this version. Fiona is a master of rhythm and layering different sounds.
she has such a unique quality in her voice that you cant find in artists these days, it's beautiful
i like all of them personally. i like fiona's changes and amy's voice is great.
@TheDobbyDies it does but what i love is that somehow fiona made this sound darker and it fits better i like it(:
Your comment is 8 years old and I just gave it a thumbs up. Hope you still mean what you posted. Haha
this is my favorite version *-*
Infinitely better than Amy Lee.
nop
very very unique!
This is my first time listen to Fiona's song,
many pictures in her voice @@
mystery and bleak, but beatiful~
I like the depressing quality this song now holds now that Fiona Apple has done it. I believe that Fiona Apple and Amy Lee made this song one of my favorites only because of what they have done to it. Thank you for this. I truly appreciate it!
Honestly, this song is so overwhelmingly sad and powerful that I have trouble listening to it.
This is so eerily beautiful. She mastered the sound of a dark beautiful sound. I love it. What a sexy voice she has.
This isn't just my favorite version, or my favorite song. It's just my favorite.
The emotional tone of this song sounds as if she is defeated.. not bored. I like all versions of this song, but this is my favorite.
I'm amazed that this Amy vs. Fiona thing is STILL going on. Seriously, who cares which is better. Stop comparing all three of them to each other. They're all different in their own way which makes them unique. The "debate" is...kinda pointless.
Love this! I didnt know Fiona had a version of this song. Blow Amy Lee's outta the water. So sad and dark. I love it! What talent....
This is my favorite and the best version of this song
This is one of the most beautiful, haunting things I've ever heard. In my personal opinion, Fiona's voice fits perfectly.
It was all emotion, you can almost feel the sorrow in her heart.
I love this song. I love this singer. I love this movie. I love lamp.
her voice is haunting and beautiful and amy puts in a lot of emotion but nothing can compare to sally
i think this is the better version because it fits the mood better. sally's character has no extreme projection of sorrow, there's just that emptiness that she can't be with jack, and fiona apple's low tones and simpler music better reflects that
When I listen to it I can actually feel a bit depressed. And also, the dejection in the music along with her voice is shown so clearly.
i like both versions, but fiona's version is so hauntingly beautiful that I prefer it over all others.
I definitely agree.
I LOVE this song.
I don't get tire of this song
It's really beautiful
Fiona's voice is so dark its simply perfect for the song.
beautiful arrangement!
I prefer Fiona's version because her tone, it really relates to the song...She sounds saddened, tormented. And its just soothing. Like she's really in sally's shoes. And that's just perfect. c:
I love this and amy lee's version
Wow this amazing I used to love love love and Amy lee version and I still do but Fiona is just so amazing I loved it
Fiona's version convey's the bleak atmosphere of this song in such a way that Amy Lee would need to die, come back to life as a starving child, die again, and come back as a singer with all the memories of her previous life in order to even come close to matching the emotional depth given to us by Fiona Apple on this piece of beauty. Poetry in motion.
both are great and we all are aload our own. My favourite is the original but the cover show diffrent and are amasing
I love fiona's version. Amy's version is also good, the difference is that the two sing in different manners and about different things as well. this is more reflective of fiona's style and I like it. it's dark and sad, but subtle all the same. and it gives me the chills.

I love this version so so so so much.
This is one of the best things ive ever heard period
I like this song plays because his voice is perfect for the theme but also phenomenal Amy Lee sings
I just CAN'T decide which version I love the most!
I feel something with Amy Lee's version that I don't feel with Fiona's version and vice and versa
For this, it's all about feeling, and everything gets complicated when it's based on feelings!

Dear Fiona Apple,
Please perform this song live someday, and let someone video it.
Thanks
Your fans
this song gave me goosebumps
I love them both
Other than the movie, THIS is the best version of this song
I really live this version :3
i love this version.
@Helzivsymph You totally nailed that imagery. Good call!
@phillipcairo Fiona = Purely amazing and most talented singer ever.
I love both versions. Fiona's version I see a woman from the 30-40's era singing about her mobster boyfriend she just can't tame. Amy's I see a woman from a Dorian Gray/Frankenstein goth book singing about her love interest she can never have. Both version are beautiful in any case.
This is the best version out there. It makes me bawl my eyes out. Amy Lee's version has NOTHING on Fiona's.
I really like her voice.
it's like she's so sad that she sounds low on emotion. and I like it. it's not like lots of other songs where the person is sad but they have so much energy.
she sounds like she's sad and tired. (which is a good thing for this song)
and as for Amy Lee's cover....I like it. it's just as good as this one.
it's not the same style though. so why is everyone comparing the two? that would just be saying which style you like better :)
Sad, hopeless, and beautiful.
Better than the original version. I don't care what anyone says, that's how I feel.
I love The Nightmare Before Christmas, but I always thought that "Sally's Song" was really dippy. Fiona Apple's cover of it really makes the song come alive for me. It's great.

She doesn't sound bored - she sounds... sad, defeated, so tired of being ignored...
She reminds me of Rufus Wainwright :) Love it.
been a fan of nightmare before christmas since i was 7 =p (now 20) and i really do love this cover, who cares if it relates to the character or how it relates to the movie. Its a damn good cover imo.
I for one like how dark it is. *shrug.* Fiona's always had an amazing voice, period.
feels like this is the original version..
than you should watch the movie again....
I love both versions :)
I think this is the better version of this song I love it!!!!
Can we just STOP comparing Fiona and Amy? They are both amazing singers who did beautiful versions of this song.
Got here by following Fionas cover of pure imagination
I always imagined Fiona's to be more of a modern day "Les Misérables" type of situation, but I like your idea better. ;)
@DoYouFearDeath333 I totally agree. I like both versions, but there is a certain darker mood to this version. Exactly as you said, it's as if she's given up hope.
Fiona does it best, period.
Fiona Apple's version is more dark but it is very strong and good. Amy Lee's version is more romantic and light. Both in essence fit with the film but are different styles. Fantastic versions though!
I guess thats why i like this version better because it's potrayed good

Thank you. *bows*
I love all three versions. I don't get what people are fighting over. It's not like they are trying to replace the originals.
yeah she does give this song a dark and depressing quality. i love it, its great! but AMy Lee's version gives it a hypnotizing quality
i fucking love this cover!
This version is quirky and I like it her voice isn't bad I'm not saying it's better or worse than Amy's version because that was beautiful in it's own way. Each artest has there different styles and they both sing this song beautifully so I can't choose which one is better or worse
I am reminded of Zooey Deschanel when I listen to this. They sound a lot alike.
I love her voice don't get me wrong Amy lees voice is beautiful but with this song Fionas voice fits with this song you can hear the sadnees in her voice that's the whole point in this song emotionless sadness and depression
if you don't like the fiona apple version then go listen to the amy lee's and stop leaving negativity under this beautiful song. simple.
this is much better then amy lee's version. sounds original, she made it her own. love THIS ONE!
Which matches with the song lyrics, like shes trying to be noticed but she isnt and what you said makes sense.
