I fly over this cover, I've always loved Fiona Apple's cover man. I love the risks she takes, keeping it in alto like that with those more sultry layers, and the slight tempo change part way through. I never saw that with Amy Lee's cover. She elongated notes for a dramatic, heart breaking theme that she does very well, but it didn't feel like she actually changed a lot from the original. It felt more like imitation than anything. But this is very creative. I was impressed.

I love Amy like, she's my favorite singer of all times since I was 8 or 9, but this song it's so dark, vibe, dark ambient, it's just simply sadness, loneliness and hopeless. It's authentic with the Sally's pain, and the instrumental, the drum... GOD! This song it's a trip to the dark side, a sad dark side, with tears and grief... And I LOVE IT. I love be in these dark places with these songs...

I love having so many interpretations of this song. I was just listening to Amy Lee's for the first time and remembered Fiona's. This is so great. I wonder if any other women have covered this in a different way. It reminds me of I Will Always Love You...how Whitney's version is a heartbreaking song for love lost and Dolly's is a goodbye to a friend. It's beautiful how we get these different interpretations just based on pitch or pauses or the background music. What a time to be alive!!

I know we ALL compare this cover and Amy Lee's, but I think it should be said that when it comes to the two different versions, there's one main difference, for me. With Amy Lee's version, before I even heard it, I knew what it would sound like. I knew that it'd be a slow, mostly piano cover with a huge rock/orchestral crescendo. The melody of the instrumental track was fairly similar to the original composition as well. It was a deliberate marketing move towards the Hot Topic crowd. And there's nothing wrong with any of that. But with Fiona Apple's cover, I feel like there's more artistic license. It's a cover that sounds much more original, which is what a good cover does. It takes artistic freedom, while still paying tribute to the spirit of the original. The feeling leans into the macabre sense of the lyrics, with dragging strings and a low-mid tempo. It's just my personal reasoning that I really do say that I not only prefer this version personally, but with my slightly objective point of view, Fiona does a superior version, not just as a cover, but it's a better song

Amy's version sounds sad but hopeful, as if Sally feels she can be with jack but can't because she feels useless, while fiona's version sounds as if Sally already knows she can't be with jack and is just depressed because she will never be with jack.

I never realized how fiona apple really influenced an entire generation of musicians. I literally havent listened to fiona apple since the 90s..now listening to this..I hear her sound in alot of contemporary artists.

Idk if people keep saying Amy Lee's version and referring to the vocals in the movie but Amy does not sing the original version (the movie) Catherine O'Hara sings the original. You probably know her from Beetlejuice, the artsy stepmom. She is in several Burton movies. But it's not Amy Lee. She may have done a cover. But again not the original.
