I can't explain it, but there's such an astonishing degree of awareness in Fiona Apple's harmonic/instrument decisions. The lyrics anxiously jerk between innocent yearning and distracted apprehension, and she's crystallized it perfectly without being predictable. Dismal and sweet, this version takes the cake for me!
I sense there's something in the wind That feels like tragedy's at hand And though I'd like to stand by him Can't shake this feeling that I have The worst is just around the bend And does he notice my feelings for him And will he see how much he means to me I think it's not to be What will become of my dear friend Where will his actions lead us then Although I'd like to join the crowd In their enthusiastic cloud Try as I may, it doesn't last And will we ever end up together No, I think not, it's never to become For I am not the one
Me too... Fiona's voice is deeper and sounds drunk with lament. Plus, the strings/violin parts just sound sexier in Fiona's version. Amy Lee matches Sally's voice pitch better, but this version makes me feel.

Fiona's version is deeper, an octave lower....and her words are slightly slurred as if she's drunk and lamenting. Plus the strings, violin, viola or cello or whatever is best in this version. Amy Lee/Evanescence kind of overdid the orchestral stuff, which takes one out of the mood....imo.
@@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785Amy Lee did an absolutely wonderful job on the cover, but I might just be getting defensive Both/all versions tho are literally so beautiful and I love them both with my whole heart
I could barely listen to amy lee's version - I'm so glad I found this version which is so much better. Fiona Apple captures the whimsical & melancholy of the song
There’s a few in this album that should be revisited again 😂. Jacks lament should be done by like MCR or something. I love Marilyn Mansons this is Halloween though 😍😍. And maybe panic! Doing what’s this. Flyleaf wrecked it.
I've been trying to find this on Google play and they replaced this with the Amy Lee version on this album! Totally pissed me off because this is far more haunting and tormented than her rendition. Whatever, I'm just happy to finally have found this.
I have to respectfully disagree completely with you. Amy Lee's version is FAR superior because for one thing, Fiona Apple CAN'T sing AT ALL! Her voice is so emotionless, has a limited range, her tone isn't appealing, and she sounds more like she's talk-singing than actually singing. She was basically Lorde before Lorde became famous and just like Lorde, she's a terrible singer. Amy Lee has an amazing voice, has such a hauntingly beautiful sound to her voice, she put a lot of emotion in her voice, and the instrumental music is perfect. Amy Lee's version is even better than the original version from the movie.
So weird to me that there are two versions of the Nightmare Revisited soundtrack. The original has this, Panic! At the Disco, and Fall Out Boy. But Wikipedia lists a completely different lineup...
Bleh....I have to disagree. The instrumental bits in Amy's version are way too overdone imo...the strings sound sexier in Fiona's version, and she sings an octave lower and sounds drunk...like a woman ought to after losing her best friend and lover.
@@Outlawgirl63 I didn’t say she was a lesbian, just that it has lesbian vibes. Like imagine that she were and how this song would be interpreted based on that, it kind of hits different doesn’t it? Not that I dislike it for that reason, maybe I just don’t like a contralto voice paired with this song.
Check your ears dude. Something is seriously wrong somewhere in there. And no this is not a matter of personal preference/taste. This is the best version of the song and that's a fact.
Idk how they expect me to complete my Fiona apple playlist when this isn’t on Apple Music or sootify
Weak ass generation. Pirate it and make your own playlists. Fuck the platforms 🙄 pirate pirate pirate

You explained it 👌🏽
I like Fiona's version better than Amy Lee's because she sounds drunk and sings an octave lower....and it has that sexy violin riff at the end.
No joke: this is my favorite Fiona Apple song ever.
It's perfect.
I LOVE THIS SONG AND THE MOVIE!!!!!
This needs to on Spotify 😭

Thank you!
She did 100x better lol
fiona apple is one of those singers that make me go "women💋" fucking love her. she just felt music so deeply
She just brings so much depth and heaviness, which you can truly feel from a broken heart...
Her voice is the perfect embodiment of real sadness
She made a perfect cover of this song👌

can people maybe stop shitting on amy lee? they both did a good job let’s not discredit anyone just bc u like a version of a song better.
I'm sure it's not what she was going for but it's a seductive nature to this. Which perfectly compliments heartache.
Best part starts at 1:59
That low pitched violin at 2:06 is the cherry on top!
I think Amy had the voice that was closer to the intended personification of Sally, but Fiona just sounds more... seductive

In this version, my heart aches, too.
I heard this at Oogie Boogie Bash and love it!!
fiona is my indie gothic queen
This song hits different when ur best friend died
Best version ever! They play it at Oogie Boogie Bash! It makes the experience so much better in the park!
If this wasn't FIona Apple, I wouldn't give a rat's ass !
Why
SO much better then the other versions, sorry Amy
Poor sally
i love fiona’s version of this song. i also love your version of sally!
I hate Apple Music and Spotify for not having this on there or the other three BANGERS they don’t have either 😒

I'd forgotten how good this song is - it reminds me of dancing with Mephisto, or a tango or something, especially the 'dip' sounding part. Beautiful!
This kicks the snot out of Amy Lee's version. I don't know why they would replace this with hers.
such a sweet song

Can someone help me? I had a CD years ago that had covers of songs in this movie but I can't remember what it was called.

Amy Lee is way better at this song
Sorry but this sounds too lesbian coffeehouse jazz to do the song justice. Amy Lee’s cover is better, and so is Billie Eilish’s.

Fiona isn’t a lesbian. If she was that wouldn’t be a bad thing . I think her voice fits the tone of the movie.
