I think it would be different for everyone....but the best thing to do either to buy the irons in the first place, or after you have your set is to go to a professional fitter and do a gapping session. They can bend the loft a little to weaken or strengthen the loft to close down the gaps. Here taking a degree or 2 off the 5 iron - and some decisions about the bottom end of the set that will be affected by how long you hit the gap wedge...you can spend an hour or 2 and get this fully dialed in.
Time for a comparison of Ping irons over the past decades: Eye2, G25, G and G425. I am really interested to see what the differences are and whether we are not better off.
I tried these out today at my local golf shop. I hit them next to Titleist T100S, T200, and Srixon jpx21’s I believe. The G425’s were so consistent and felt like butter. Surprisingly they were pretty workable. I generally hit a draw, but I could easily hit a fade when I tried. I think these are my next clubs but want to try the i210’s first.
Not sure how many shots hit with each to identify the gap. If a gap truly exists after an extensive test then this makes a case for having a session with a fitter who can look at the lie and loft of all the clubs and tweak them a bit to ensure proper gapping between clubs.
Ricks work ethic is why we all love this channel !!!! Got me into golf bad.. with a good mindset 🙂 progress every time you play, even if its learning from a mistake and never give up !
I just bought a brand new set of these that were on clearance from Dick’s Sporting goods. I was going to buy the new G-430’s. But these were over $300 less. And at that price difference, I just couldn’t pass them up. I love the non-cheap classic look of them. They’re absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! Can’t wait to get out on the course this spring!! Really looking forward to it. 😎
I just bought a set of these, Rick, & it was the best fitting that I have ever had. The jacked up lofts are a real ego boost, ha! I was 7 iron 160 yes so really 6 iron 160 yes. U r right! These clubs LOOK & FEEL GREAT! This will be my 7th set of Ping irons in 40 years of playing golf.
Rick, Just want to say thank you. I have been watching your videos for months as I have had the "itch" to get back into golf. The more of you videos that I watch the more it inspired me to go for it. I have always wanted a set of Ping irons as my older set was Cobra's. Thanks to you and all your iron reviews I have taken the leap and was fitted for my first set of Ping 425 irons. Just want to say thank you for what you are doing with these videos they have made a difference. Oh and by the way I live in Kentucky and absolutely love your accent.
I have been going to the range lately and I have pain in my back more than previous years! I was hoping you could do a video about how to properly swing with no back pain. Would really appreciate it!
Love the final “honest” reason for possibly purchasing a previous model. Not all club reviewers are willing to suggest this (hyping the latest & greatest).
Great video brother... I love how you showed the gap numbers with these irons to show how the "strong loft" effects the set up! About time someone showed the issues in gapping! Thanks for the honest, straight forward review! Keep it up my friend!
Probably one of the best looking G series irons they have had, I love the look. Never been a big fan of the G series as I play with the i-series . but very glad to see that they keep improving them. Thanks for another great video Rick.
I'm going through lessons right now and I am see a major difference already and after every lesson I check you Channel for relevance to the tips given thanks for what you do.
I love the revue but I will say I purchased these irons a week or so after swatching this video. I haven’t identified any drastic gaps between these irons at all. My PW I hit 140 & 150 on average for my 9I. Now yes there some instances where I pure either of those clubs and can hit the paw 150 or 9I 160. That’s with any club though, and these irons have been a saving grace. Absolutely love them hands down.
Rick I just love when you test clubs and drivers you just do it the right way and I trust and understand your opinions and that it is just that your opinion
I still play with a hand-me-down set of 30 ish year old Ping Zings that my grandfather gave me when I started playing, and I still use them 3 years later! They don’t have the distance newer irons would give me, but they still are straight as an arrow
Brilliant and blatantly frank clip, Rick. I play the G700 and really can’t fault them and have played PING for the last 37 years (previously Wilson). The gapping you demonstrated in the clip is an eye opener and to be honest I have found this with all the 9 sets I’ve owned. Have had to tweak the strength of my wedge and 5 iron to get a more acceptable gaping, cheers and good luck in your new venture.
I got the Callaway Strata set in blue and if you're a golfer like me who plays entirely for show and looks, it is the set for you. They're pretty forgiving and have a decent feel, and are INCREDIBLY shiny out of the package
Ping G Irons were forgiving, consistent and gapped well, reasons you gave them #1 some years ago and why I got some. Depending on how I'm striking the ball I still use them or the i200's. I have no need for power irons that don't perform better and HydoPearl finish isn't enough to justify it. Love your honest reviews.
I’ve checked lofts on Pings before and they were slightly off. They’re not forged, so Ping recommended sending them them for adjustment. Apparently Ping doesn’t use the normal machine found in golf shops. They might flash heat and bang to spec? Probably why there was gaps in distance?
Just finished 2 compete competetive rounds of golf at my club. Lowered storing by 5 strokes that paid for 4 clubs already ! Love them thanks for the great review.
Agree totally with the strong lofts - have a set of G410s and had to weaken the lofts by 2degrees on my irons to get better gapping. Why do manufacturers persist with strong lofts?? Great review as always Rick - keep up the great content 👍
I play Ping 400 irons, love them, forgiving, sound and feel great. No need to upgrade at this time to the 425, but highly recommend Ping G iron family, previously played the G30s, really liked them, but the 400s gave me more distance and a softer feel, which i like.
Got fitted just recently now that i have started working down from a very high handicap. Had a worn, used set of callaway x18 which worked well, but when we finally dialed these in, the difference for me was staggering. Only gained about 5-10meters average with the 7iron, but I halved the average left-right deviation. Really noticeable when you quickly shave off one stroke every two holes just from not getting those greenside bunkers and instead getting on the green or fringe. Cannot wait to keep working them as the season opens up here.
Great video and outstanding review. I have decided to get new irons and was wondering about the Ping. You have helped me narrow it down to 3 manufacturers. Callaway, Mizuno or Ping
Hi Rich. Discovered your channel only a month ago. So many great tips and great banter with both Pete and Matt on the course. Looking forward to putting your advice into practice when we're allowed. Stay safe and thank you once again
Rick, I would love to see a comparison between the Ping G425 and the very popular TaylorMade P790. I know they have different facing, but it would be very interesting to see the distance and dispersion between these irons.
Have you hit any of the new Ping G425 matching drivers and if so what did you think? About to buy these irons and trying to decide between the new Callaway or Ping driver. Thanks!
@@_IslandRealtor No, I have not try the matching driver. However, I play with Callaway Epic Sub zero it is a very good driver. Try both before you decide, I have try both back 2019 and it turn out Callaway driver suits me better.
Thank you for the review, I have the G410’s contemplating getting these. Appreciate the honesty Rick! I look forward to your notifications everyday, never a dull moment .
Thanks Rick for the review! I currently got custom fitted for the g410 a month ago and was having some regrets on it since these were coming out. It’s nice to know there isn’t a huge difference between the two.
I had some beautiful adams forged cb1 blacks and hot shots were a major problem for me. I would lose strokes because I would put myself in trouble by landing behind the greens. They were strong lofted by 1 degree, but it made such of mess that I just had to get rid of of them. Now the Titleist 775, are a very true iron and extremely forgiving.
It's true that distance irons are inconsistant, compare it to a hybrid, which can normally go around 200 yards, but you sometimes get that occaisonal hot strike where it goes further than your 3 wood normally does. Same thing with a modern driving iron, can either go 180 or 240 sometimes. The effect of striking it perfectly pure in the middle of the face is amplified with all the face technology, that's my point here. As well as the CG weighting, which can either produce a normal flight, or a very high launching one if you hit closer to the middle of the face, making the distance inconsistant. That's why I actually prefer my vintage blades, launch angle more predictable, spin more at the same distance, more consistant smash factor, whereas GI irons launch higher and spin less, seen loads of tests done where the blades are more consistant. Since when did 7 irons have to go further than 140/160 yards anyway. While we're at it, Bring back the 50 degree pitching wedge, get rid of the AW and GW in the iron sets which are just a 9i and pw in disguise, bring back 2 irons, which nowadays are disguised as 3 irons (in players irons) and 4 irons (in distance irons). and stamp every iron with the degrees on the sole. Make the sand wedge in the set 55 degrees so you have a nice gap for the 60 degree. It's true that distance sells but it's just an illusion.
Confused on the verdict. So are these the most forgiving irons? I’m a newbie taking lessons looking to buy irons that will be most forgiving with solid contact and direction.
Great video Rick, I just recently switched from G’s 2016, to more of a players combo set very similar to Ben Hogan’s. There were times with the Pings that I would hit an iron way too far, and made it difficult to get proper gapping.
I have the ping g410s. New to golf so I definitely have a ways to go. They are definitely forgiving but they will only forgive so much if you’re not good.
Hi from America! I suspect the hydro-pearl finish allows the wet club to "glide" through rough etc... a bit better than other finishes, translating into less of a mis-hit.
I'm looking to upgrade from my g25 and these are the clubs I'm going with. Absolutely can't wait to get them in the bag and get to work with them. Thanks for the video
Would you recommend these over the g710 for a newish player not yet got an official handicap? Many thanks for the great videos by the way. Always a great help.
Interesting review. With regards to the gaps PW-9 and 5-6 would this be a concern? I’m not sure; the mid to high HC player won’t strike the ball so consistently as pro/semi-pro so this might not be such an issue. Price is good compared to competition; a real contender though may be the Wilson Staff. BTW I’m still using my Ping I20s.
Great Video! Ping has always been making forgiving clubs. Seems Rick didnt need a super jacked up loft to hit 7 iron 180 yards. The lofts on these irons are only a bit stronger than cavity back irons 10 years ago..... 7 iron is always a favorite iron for everyone and they dont need to hit it 180 yards. Probably around 150 yards is good enough....
I’ve enjoyed my Ping G irons since 2018. Last weekend, I had a fitter set up a 7 iron in a similar setting as my Ping G in a Ping 425. If I could sell my clubs for the used market retail and apply that for the always full retail price of Ping 425, I still would rather spend that difference on range balls and a new wedge or two. I saw no difference in the performance of the Ping 425 over my Ping G irons. The only way I could justify spending more on “new irons” is if I played a couple of weeks on a course I’m familiar with and see my shots improving. Other than that, buy new clubs is just that- buying a game.
Great video as usual, but I don't like strong lofted sets. I like weaker lofted sets with longer shafts, if possible can you test a set of clubs like that
Hi Rick thanks for videos. Just curious you were talking about the 2 gaps you found in distances, did you measure the lofts of the clubs you have to make sure they are what they're supposed to be?
Back in the mid-to-late eighties I was using the Ping Eye 2 irons. Before that I was using Wilson Staff forged clubs. I think ping best irons ever to be honest with you. Unfortunately somebody broke into my car and stole them.
Hey Rick. Great review and video as usual. Wondering what your thoughts are on AimPoint putting technique. It looks promising but everything I’ve seen on it requires an in-person lesson.
If you are actually scoring 130, taking swing lessons will pay off a lot better than new irons tbh. But there are many things involves in your score other than ball striking with irons
Rick, Rick, Rick....you can order these clubs in a retro fit...7 iron is 32.3 not a 30.. my I 20 7 iron is a 33 degree... real close...I think the retro degree set would eliminate the holes in the set.. you might check it out with this club being so popular.. as usual love your channel...
Hi Rick. Happy New Year. Be great if you could do a clip on hitting the hybrid and show some close ups and close up slow mo's of the hitting down effect. Would like to get a visual to get better ar this part of my game. Regards MD
Got fitted for these back in April and started playing them in late May. Handicap has dropped over 2 strokes (down to 7.8). Went from 25 year old Ping Eye 2 beryllium copper with stiff shafts. New clubs have regular steel shafts so there was an adjustment period to get used to the shafts. Hoping to get handicap back down around 6 where it was at my best several years ago. Love the videos.
Thanks for another thorough and complete review. Would love to see a comparison of steel vs graphite shafts in a new iron set. Also, it seems that there is a trend towards very small iron heads. for me forgiveness goes up with iron head size. Very hard to beat those old ('94 - 96') Big Bertha irons for forgiveness.
I love my ping Iblades! You should retest them, I watched you older review and it didn’t seem like you liked them too much. They have the longest streak on golf digests gold list!
Picked up a g425 5 iron in mint condition for $80 with a nice graphite shaft. With a few range swings I was able to dial in two par 3 holes from 175-185 yards. I have JPX 919 hot metals and I really love both. I really like the click these clubs give you when you have a nice strike.
Hope you guys are all good 👌 🔥
I love you Rick I’m 11 and the only reason I’m playing off a 3 is because of you.
🙏
How would you compare these to the Cobra RAD speed irons?
Hi there Rick I beat your 1000 balls and beat me with 1183
I am good thanks Rick and another great video from you .
The gap testing was really informative. Please add it to all iron reviews going forward.

Did a fitting today went from eye 2 to g425 the difference is 10-(maybe15) yards in distance, higher spin rate higher launch.

Thanks Rick. Would you be able to do a Comparison of these against the RadSpeed irons as it would be very useful.
I got my 410’s a couple of seasons ago. Changed my game getting custom fit. Scores came down and handicap followed
Just ordered my set 1/12
With graphite shaft and power lofts and green dot
Can’t wait to get them
Rick, did you check the lofts? It might just take a little correction on the lofts to correct the big gaps.
I have Mizuno JPX 900 irons and the 5 iron as well is so hot!!! As long as a 3 iron when struck well.
Thanks for great review! Gap test was awesome reference!
Have any irons that you hit and they are so forgiving that it’ll being my score from 130 to 75? I’d need those ones
I second this, something to actually drop scores due to forgiveness
Just play only nine holes!
@@cervuscanadensis5634 😂😂👍🏼
If you are actually scoring 130, taking swing lessons will pay off a lot better than new irons tbh. But there are many things involves in your score other than ball striking with irons
@@prophetfuture9225 like putting. a game within a game. And arguable THE most important element of scoring.
Love that set, what would you say is the best ball to game for high handicappers mate im off 21 and really undecided between 2/3 balls
Hi Rick. Happy New Year.
Be great if you could do a clip on hitting the hybrid and show some close ups and close up slow mo's of the hitting down effect. Would like to get a visual to get better ar this part of my game.
Regards MD
Hope you are doing well Rick. Thank you for all the great content.
When testing the wet club face and ball, how does this compare to other manufacturers? That would be interesting to see the differences in results
Just got some can’t wait to try them out thanks Rick.
Time to see Rick “ABSOLUTELY CRUSH” these irons
absolootly croosh
Ah look I’ve absolootley crooshed it
I love my ping Iblades! You should retest them, I watched you older review and it didn’t seem like you liked them too much. They have the longest streak on golf digests gold list!
he had them in the bag
Picked up a g425 5 iron in mint condition for $80 with a nice graphite shaft. With a few range swings I was able to dial in two par 3 holes from 175-185 yards. I have JPX 919 hot metals and I really love both. I really like the click these clubs give you when you have a nice strike.
Which ones did you end up liking more? Cheers
