I think it would be different for everyone....but the best thing to do either to buy the irons in the first place, or after you have your set is to go to a professional fitter and do a gapping session. They can bend the loft a little to weaken or strengthen the loft to close down the gaps. Here taking a degree or 2 off the 5 iron - and some decisions about the bottom end of the set that will be affected by how long you hit the gap wedge...you can spend an hour or 2 and get this fully dialed in.

Time for a comparison of Ping irons over the past decades: Eye2, G25, G and G425.

I tried these out today at my local golf shop. I hit them next to Titleist T100S, T200, and Srixon jpx21’s I believe. The G425’s were so consistent and felt like butter. Surprisingly they were pretty workable. I generally hit a draw, but I could easily hit a fade when I tried. I think these are my next clubs but want to try the i210’s first.

Not sure how many shots hit with each to identify the gap. If a gap truly exists after an extensive test then this makes a case for having a session with a fitter who can look at the lie and loft of all the clubs and tweak them a bit to ensure proper gapping between clubs.

I love the revue but I will say I purchased these irons a week or so after swatching this video. I haven’t identified any drastic gaps between these irons at all. My PW I hit 140 & 150 on average for my 9I. Now yes there some instances where I pure either of those clubs and can hit the paw 150 or 9I 160. That’s with any club though, and these irons have been a saving grace. Absolutely love them hands down.

Brilliant and blatantly frank clip, Rick. I play the G700 and really can’t fault them and have played PING for the last 37 years (previously Wilson). The gapping you demonstrated in the clip is an eye opener and to be honest I have found this with all the 9 sets I’ve owned. Have had to tweak the strength of my wedge and 5 iron to get a more acceptable gaping, cheers and good luck in your new venture.

I’ve checked lofts on Pings before and they were slightly off. They’re not forged, so Ping recommended sending them them for adjustment. Apparently Ping doesn’t use the normal machine found in golf shops. They might flash heat and bang to spec? Probably why there was gaps in distance?

It's true that distance irons are inconsistant, compare it to a hybrid, which can normally go around 200 yards, but you sometimes get that occaisonal hot strike where it goes further than your 3 wood normally does. Same thing with a modern driving iron, can either go 180 or 240 sometimes.
The effect of striking it perfectly pure in the middle of the face is amplified with all the face technology, that's my point here. As well as the CG weighting, which can either produce a normal flight, or a very high launching one if you hit closer to the middle of the face, making the distance inconsistant.
That's why I actually prefer my vintage blades, launch angle more predictable, spin more at the same distance, more consistant smash factor, whereas GI irons launch higher and spin less, seen loads of tests done where the blades are more consistant.
Since when did 7 irons have to go further than 140/160 yards anyway. While we're at it, Bring back the 50 degree pitching wedge, get rid of the AW and GW in the iron sets which are just a 9i and pw in disguise, bring back 2 irons, which nowadays are disguised as 3 irons (in players irons) and 4 irons (in distance irons). and stamp every iron with the degrees on the sole. Make the sand wedge in the set 55 degrees so you have a nice gap for the 60 degree. It's true that distance sells but it's just an illusion.

Got fitted just recently now that i have started working down from a very high handicap. Had a worn, used set of callaway x18 which worked well, but when we finally dialed these in, the difference for me was staggering. Only gained about 5-10meters average with the 7iron, but I halved the average left-right deviation. Really noticeable when you quickly shave off one stroke every two holes just from not getting those greenside bunkers and instead getting on the green or fringe. Cannot wait to keep working them as the season opens up here.

Exchanged for these clubs after purchasing the TM sim max irons, not to say the Sim's arent good, the Ping g425 just "tikes" every box for me. Look, feel, distance, forgiveness, etc. I appreciated the more lofted clubs to the low lofted Sim's. More spin and I must say, the straightest irons I have played with. Plus, the integrity of the irons faces and what not is much more forgiving to the TM irons (scuffs)

I had some beautiful adams forged cb1 blacks and hot shots were a major problem for me. I would lose strokes because I would put myself in trouble by landing behind the greens. They were strong lofted by 1 degree, but it made such of mess that I just had to get rid of of them. Now the Titleist 775, are a very true iron and extremely forgiving.

I’ve enjoyed my Ping G irons since 2018. Last weekend, I had a fitter set up a 7 iron in a similar setting as my Ping G in a Ping 425. If I could sell my clubs for the used market retail and apply that for the always full retail price of Ping 425, I still would rather spend that difference on range balls and a new wedge or two. I saw no difference in the performance of the Ping 425 over my Ping G irons. The only way I could justify spending more on “new irons” is if I played a couple of weeks on a course I’m familiar with and see my shots improving. Other than that, buy new clubs is just that- buying a game.

If you are actually scoring 130, taking swing lessons will pay off a lot better than new irons tbh. But there are many things involves in your score other than ball striking with irons

Hi from America! I suspect the hydro-pearl finish allows the wet club to "glide" through rough etc... a bit better than other finishes, translating into less of a mis-hit.

Interesting review. With regards to the gaps PW-9 and 5-6 would this be a concern? I’m not sure; the mid to high HC player won’t strike the ball so consistently as pro/semi-pro so this might not be such an issue. Price is good compared to competition; a real contender though may be the Wilson Staff. BTW I’m still using my Ping I20s.

Big fan Rick question when wanting to buy older ping irons like 2014 or 2016 do you have to use the older ping color charts for older irons or can you use the current chart for older ping irons thanks

I have the g400 irons and the gap between my 6iron and 5iron is 30yds. It's a bit frustrating. But I have a 22degree hybrid that I use for higher arching shot between my 6 and 5. Also they have a strong left bias and find myself aiming right alot

Picked up a g425 5 iron in mint condition for $80 with a nice graphite shaft. With a few range swings I was able to dial in two par 3 holes from 175-185 yards. I have JPX 919 hot metals and I really love both. I really like the click these clubs give you when you have a nice strike.
