The PRIME Z790-A WiFi is the motherboard to watch at every new chipset release. Unfortunately, despite being an outstanding board, it is too close to its last year predecessor to motivate any upgrade.
Not only does it mirror its aesthetic and design, but it misses the opportunity to improve its VRM and add bandwidth output features (back I/O USBs).
    Enjoy!

Great overall video, very useful to me. I have a technical question about audio connectors on the I/O panel; I read in the manual that a 4 channels audio system must be connected in a strange way: a connector (lime or pink, I don't remember) for the front audio channels, and a front connector (top of the case, for example) for the back audio channels. Did I misunderstand anything? Two cables running to two different location of the case??? That is weird, unpractical...and I like the Asrock z790 approach way more: lime and pink connectors, both on the I/O mobo panel, for front and back speakers! Sorry for my english, hope you will understand anyway. Can you confirm this?

Thank you for this review. I purchased this board for my next build which will be in white. I buy boards like I buy cars, I don't buy a new one every year. My pre-built i9-139 Hyte system has a TUF Z690-Plus in it and I am happy with it. My expectations are that these two boards will get me thru the next 3 years at least so I don't mind the price when the quality is there. What I can continue to do is to upgrade around the board with faster memory, better cooling, better graphics cards and fans. If and when any of those items become available and will add to my system, that is where I may do additional upgrading. Got my Z790-A. One difference I did find is that the Z790-A DDR5 has connections for TPM. I get what that module does, just trying to figure the benefit and how it works.

I also have a good cooler - MSI MEG 360 - and I was intending to do some overclocking on that i7 puppy. Unfortunately I've read here and there that htis motherboard wouldn't put up with OC'ing an i7 or an i9, and I sohould've gone Maximus. May I ask what's your take on it? Hey there,
Thanks for sharing this detailed review of the Asus Prime z790a motherboard. It's always great to get insights into the latest tech offerings. I appreciate your thorough analysis of the motherboard's features and capabilities.
You've covered a lot of ground in your review, from the design to the VRM configuration, memory support, and I/O options. It's clear that this motherboard has a lot to offer in terms of performance and versatility.
One thing I'd like to know more about is the motherboard's compatibility with different CPUs and GPUs. It would be helpful to have some information on which processors and graphics cards work best with this motherboard for gaming or other tasks.
Overall, your review provides a comprehensive overview of the Asus Prime z790a, and it's certainly a motherboard worth considering for those looking for a powerful and reliable option. Keep up the great work!

This board has only 4 sata ports and weak DDR5 abilities on the fast slots (best i could do is 6000 mhz xmp profile, and a max speed of stock ram speed (4800 mhz if i remember right) on the slow slots. Also it had a tendency to selectively not boot my spinny slow HDs which pissed me off to no end (yes the POST delay boot setting... eh not that great waiting an additional 8+ seconds for it to maybe boot them). Refunded and got Gigabyte Aorus Elite X AX for $20 more and no issues. In theory i can do 4-way DDR5 at high speed (not that i intend to but i like the flexibility). I honestly didn't test the slow slots yet but fast slots are taking 6800 mhz OC without issue and 7000 mhz is just about stable with some tuning (had like 1 error after a lot of TestMem5 testing, with the same cheap 6000 mhz kit that Asus had issues with!). Also yes slow spinny HD's all work and 6 sata ports (so i can plug in all my old drives AND my ancient dvd burner). Basically the first and last ASUS board i will ever buy lol.

I never understood this board. Of course I realize it is 5 months later now but in my area it is more expensive than the MSI Z790 Tomahawk. It feels like Asus is the only one holding onto his day one prices while never offered much even back then. Gigabyte, MSI, ASRock are way ahead in my opinion. You got to really love Asus to buy this board but then again I imagine Asus enthusiast go for the Strix line-up at the minimum.

I have a 4080 on a z690. Having that GPU and not giving it all the lanes it needs to give you the best graphics it can offer would be sinful.
My next built will be with a ROG 3080 (I can't find the White 4080/90 GPU I want for a price that I would pay) and I just got this MB delivered today. I plan to put a 4080/90 on this board at some point. Check the many reviews out for your GPU. Many explain lanes and how to get the most out of the GPU. Good Luck.

I find it fascinating that even on the Z-Platform for over 300€ Asus is so cheap that one has to pay premium for a wifi card, that in bulk with antennae would cost them under 10€. I will check other reviews but keep this Board in mind for a ddr4 build with 13700k.

The problem with Pci 5.0 Nvme on Z790 is that none of the Z790 boards that support PCI-E 5.0 nvme will run the gpu at 16x whilst running a PCI-E 5.0 nvme, they will all drop to 8x as there is not enough pci-e lanes on z790, this is why even the Apex still only uses 4.0 so you can maintain 16x on the gpu. So Asus choice is understandable
