Hi Danielle, it doesn't sound typical for herpes but if you are worried, I would suggest you get it checked by a health professional. They should be able to take a swab for HSV

Good question. No, herpes doesn’t affect fertility in men or women, the only issue is when pregnant women suffer an outbreak just before giving birth because it puts the baby at risk if they have a vaginal birth

If you’ve done Oral or had oral performed on you yes you can be at risk,,
If you’ve used the same dildo or sex toy as someone else with chlamydia you can be at risk
But if you are fully virgin,, no other experiences with anyone even no kissing (kissing someone with a cold sore transmits HSV1)

Hi! Unfortunately I can’t say for sure, but if you have a blister / ulcer on the genitals it’s always best to get it checked. I know it can feel daunting going to see a doctor, but remember this is what we do and our goal is to help. Good luck and hope it all works out :)

Hey! I’d say it is manageable rather than curable, in that we don’t really have a way to eradicate herpes virus from your body completely but you can manage outbreaks with antivirals

Hey there! The best way to know if it is herpes is to see a health professional and get a swab. But from what you describe it could be a couple of things - such as balanitis (check out photos in the link below). Best to get checked if you are not sure though

If you have any lesions it's best to get them checked. There are lots of things that cause lesions on the genitals and it can be difficult to tell the difference, but a doctor or health professional should be able to give you a diagnosis

I had full std testing that came back negative but they didn’t test for herpes. My penis is feeling a little weird but I don’t see anything. Hey mate, firstly it’s really common to feel stressed about this stuff. Good thing is that STI testing came back negative. As for whether it could be a herpes outbreak, I can’t say for sure but in general people might get tingling for up to 24 hours before they develop ulcers. If you haven’t got any sores, pain or if this has been going on for weeks, sounds less likely to be herpes. Of course, this is general advice so if you are unsure best to speak to a health professional directly

So a little over a year ago I had a bump on my outer labia. It was super itchy. My clitoris was super itchy too. I thought maybe the bump was an ingrown hair. I would squeeze it so hard. Clear fluid would come out. So I scheduled an appt with the gyno and she said it was herpes. But she didn’t swab it or anything. She just said that’s what it was and prescribed me 1gm of val. So I’m taking the val and the bump didn’t go away for almost a month. So now fast forward 14 months later I still have extreme itch on my outer labia and clitoris. Like it never went away. Not even the medication helped. It’s been constant. When I get itchy and scratch the skin will raise but it’s never been blisters. Is this really herpes or could it possibly be a misdiagnosis?
Hi JH! 14 months of constant symptoms doesn’t sound typical for herpes. You are quite right, without a swab it’s not possible to give a definitive diagnosis. If I were you, I’d seek a second opinion - possibly even from a dermatologist. Hope that helps!!

Hi, it varies depending on whether you are taking medication for a flare up or for suppression of the virus. Some of the common regimes include valaciclovir 500mg, famciclovir 500mg or acyclovir 400mg :)

My Nurse Practitioner says she thinks it herpes, she couldn’t even tell where it was I had to point at it for her to find. She didn’t swab it for testing. Hey Scott! It’s great you use condoms and that will certainly reduce risk, but unfortunately it’s not 100% protection. Herpes can be transmitted through skin to skin contact - including mouth to genitals - so condoms are never complete protection. But there are other causes of genital rashes the eye not herpes. Hey doc. Never had an issue before but recently was with someone who happen to be a tight fit and was in pain as soon as I finished like a rip. They look like the second photo you shown as an example but I had them straight away and look more like friction burns. Is that more then likely the case? And can you transmit anything dormant to anyone with friction burns ?
Hey mate, yeah friction ulcers are a real thing. Sound like you might be on the money. But I'd get it checked if you are unsure.

Hey there, actually either can work. Normally it depends on how often the flare ups occur and how severe they are. For example, if you only get a flare up every couple of years and it is mild, taking the meds as required might be a good option. But if you get flare ups more regularly - say a few times a year - then taking the antivirals for 6 months or more can help by suppressing the virus. Chat to a health professional if you are keen to find out more - they should be able to advise you :)

Hi Ethan, shingles and genital herpes can present very similar - you probably need to have a swab to tell them apart. Best if you can go to a health centre to have someone give you proper advice. :)

Hi, herpes can present with sores on the labia but there are other things as well. Sometimes thrust (ie. candida / yeast infection) can also cause papercut-like lesions and can be itchy
Hi doc, I’ve been some symptoms the last week and a bit. It started off with what looked like an ulcer on my head under the foreskin which made me extremely worried but with no pain. The ulcer looks like it’s healing but idk if that’s me trying to convince myself it’s not something as serious as herpes or if it’s actually healing. Along side that in recent days I’ve been having red itchy bumps all over my head. None of these symptoms are outside in my penis or anus it’s all confined to under my foreskin. I’ve read a lot and have seen something called balanitis that kind of sounds like what I’m experiencing. I clean under my foreskin frequently but over the last two months I have had sex late and multiple times gone to bed without cleaning under my foreskin and instead going to sleep. I’ve booked an appointment with my GP but the fear still persists

Hi there 😀 - unfortunately, blood tests for herpes are not very helpful. If you know you have been exposed to herpes, it's a matter of waiting to see if symptoms develop. If you get symptoms (such as sores) then get a swab ASAP to confirm the diagnosis.
hey doc, question so say that your partner has a out break of genital herpes but there are no cuts present on your fingers and you touch his penis anyway and before you can wash your hands and your touch your lips or face could it spread to your lips and or face ? and you already have hsv1, question 2, if you already have herpes hsv1 and you get genital herpes will you get an outbreak of genital herpes on the face ?

I have a girl friend, she has hsv 2 like me, she told me that our body can get a strong strain of the hsv 2 virus if I continue to take the meds for the suppressive therapy, like, in another words, she meant to say that the suppressive therapy can screw my body system protection against the virus and makes the virus resistant, is that true?
Ps: I am still on suppressive therapy just because I don’t want deal with this stupid lesions on my parts, because hurts a lot!

Hi, yes it can affect the urethra and the bladder. When it affects the urethra, there is normally a lot of pain to urinate. Bladder involvement is rare but certainly possible

Hey doctor, I have the understanding that we can get infected by genital herpes even if no lesions (sores, rash, etc.) are present, because the virus is present at skin level
Also I've read that having genital herpes makes easier to get HIV (even if no lesions are present) My question is:
What happens if I have the genital herpes present in my skin (but without lesions or symptoms,) and I have sex using condom correctly
are there higher possibilities of getting HIV if vaginal discharge falls in my scrotus (I repeat with no lesions but having the HSV virus present at skin level) ??
Second question: I have the understanding that the HSV is in incurable, sometimes it gets reactivated again in the future
While the HSV is dormant in my organism, are there higher possibilities of getting HIV when having sex (using condom correctly of course), or are they the same posibilities that when no having the HSV dormant in our organisnm?

Hey there! Good questions. So firstly, you are correct - herpes transmission can occur without lesions being present. Condoms do help, but only in protecting the skin to skin transmission in the area that the condom covers - in other words, protects the penis. So technically, if the scrotum and the vulva have contact, there could be viral shedding through the skin and transmission could occur.
Secondly, herpes can lay dormant - you are correct - so it can reactivate and cause flareups from time to time. But antiviral therapy works well in this case and tends to reduce the severity of the flareups. Alternatively, people can take antivirals regularly for 6 months to see if they can suppress the virus so that future flareups are less likely.

I’m not a doctor or pharmacist so please do some research, but it sounds very much like Candida / yeast infection.
It could be a couple of things so best to get a checkup if you have symptoms. Generally speaking, candida (thrush) can cause itching and thick white discharge, but there are other infections that can present similar.
Hey so I had majority of those symptoms. However I have one rash on the left side of my bartholin gland ( not even sure it’s a rash) that’s been in my genitals for 4 months and still hasn’t gone away. It looks kind of like raised skin in my vagina that has lines. Is this genital herpes or something else?
Generally speaking, a lump / lesion present for 4 months is unlikely to be herpes. Bartholin Cyst is possible, but best to get it checked by a health professional.

Hey Sofia! Great question. They are two completely separate organisms - one is a virus (HSV) the other a bacteria. You can only get both if you are exposed to both. That said, we tend to see higher rates of concurrent infections - in other words, if you have a herpes infection and then you are exposed to chlamydia, you might be even more likely to contract the chlamydia infection than if you didn’t have herpes infection at the time of the exposure, but it’s probably a pretty minimal difference

Hey mate, no worries! Yeah generally speaking, Herpes wouldn't present that quickly after sex. Normally if you have sores immediately after, it is more of a friction ulcer.
