Love how the box is still aligned with no cab damage...These newer trucks fold up like tin cams...... Jesus, they probably drove this thing back to the compound.....
1980 standards: Dummy stays in his seat: Good rating
2020 standards: 1/8 width overlap at 50 mph into solid metal barrier and the windshield gets a crack in it: POOR rating
@@Trippy-Salamander r/wooosh
Do they show them driving it home afterwards?
I wouldn't be surprised my dad has 76 and it's been threw everything
Just drove my 72 f250 into a large tree at 55mph (with no seatbelt) two weeks ago and walked away with minor rib fractures so I'm getting another old ford.
Why? We’re you distracted.
Bet you had to grip the steering wheel tight to not hit the windshield?
I used to be a friggin idiot in my 20s back in early 90s. I used to race down the street at passed 125mph with no seatbelt. Like a whole half turn of play on steering wheel . Unboosted drum brakes all around. Stock size tires . Fuk . Truck was a 1970 f100 , 360 with c6
Why? Did you not see the caved in glove box and bent steering column? Yea I’d be going a lot newer if I was looking for safety.
My 15 yr old son just took his SC driver's test in a 77 F150 their solid trucks
how much for the tailgate I need that😂
Ford es Ford lo demas son unos 3.27 ....27 días accidentados y 3 días rodando Ja ja ja
Heh my uncle David used to have a truck like this till he died in a car crash then my dad then got it
Watch a 2020 crash test the wheels come off
Me too dude
What they dont tell ya is after this test the wall was so badly destroyed it had to be replaced. Looks like the old Ford did pretty well.
Trucks where made so well to last but theu dolnt flex leading into injurry for the pople thag where in it mayby death

I have to say I'm impressed as an engineer and an owner of a 1977 Ford truck (same design). Clearly the safety restraints did not work as intended or the driver would not have hit the wheel and the passenger's knees would not have hit the dash. Still very survivable compared to the K20 4X4 that sheared off the front axle, buckled the frame and had severe impact to both occupants heads. I thought that series of Chevy truck was pretty good except for the rust issues and gas tank design but that crash test video makes me glad I picked the Ford back in 1977. Mine came from Babylon Ford....just down the road from the one in this video...Newins Bayshore Ford (both on Long Island in New York). Still have mine after 37 years.
david41777 - I love seeing these old Ford trucks out on the road. I just saw one today. About a 75 - 76... I saw it on I 77 in North Carolina.... black long bed .
david41777 I have a '75 f100 I've spent the last 4 years restoring it. Mine has the 300 in line 6 with the 3 on the tree. Manual steering, manual disc brakes. Mine has a Dana 60 posi rear end with 3.73 gears. I paid $400.00 for it .
I have a 1966 F250 but it probably isn't as safe as a 79 due to lack of safety belts and metal dash. Cool truck though.
Seatbelts werent mandatory back then. So they did tests without to make them more real world
@@markgodfrey790 I love seeing these old fords slam into a wall
driver would be in serious trouble from the top of the steering wheel hitting his throat and collapsing his windpipe, which could be a potentially fatal injury. the ironic thing is that these f-series had tilt steering as an option. so, the position of the steering wheel during a crash could make a diff between life or death.
That’s an f350 not an f150.
Those trucks did not come with tilt steering. Not even the top of the line ones.
@@stevenvanheel3932 yeah they did. You might want to check out the options list on the 79s.
@@SteelRhinoXpress yup you are right, looks like 78 was the first year for tilt steering. I have a fully optioned out 77 ranger XLT 4x4 that does not have tilt steering. The only option it is missing is cruise control.
Just remember when you say old cars aren't as safe as new ones. Look at what they crash the truck into, a giant concrete barrier reinforced with a massive steel plate.
The tests they do today are much harder. The frontal overlap tests have a smaller surface area of impact, which means the vehicle is distributing the force in a smaller region of the vehicle
@@BoneStack117bro they literally crash into the same concrete with reinforced metal robs.
@@TrumpAlwaysWins. Compare IIHS with NHTSA testing, the NHTSA testing is far, far easier to pass compared to IIHS, which is what Bonestack is referring to.
That's some really good slow-motion... This was taken in 1980 and I still can't get this kinda quality for recess than a couple grand.
This was like 78-79 ish the body style changed in the 80s
It was filmed awhile after the truck was made
I wasn't expecting anything very good, this being a late 70s truck. I've looked through lots of old crash test data and pre-1990s light trucks, SUVs, and vans usually do poorly.
I got the dummy measurements for this test. Driver HIC 651, Chest G's 48. Passenger HIC 587, Chest G's 32. This equates to a risk of severe injury of about ~15% for the driver and less than 10% for the passenger. The maximum allowed scores for cars made from 1982-1997 (I think) was HIC 1000, Chest G's 60 on each occupant - in this exact crash scenario: 30 mph into a wall. The test was conducted on March 20, 1980 if anyone was wondering.
So, in summation, this truck did well. Driver and passenger would likely not suffer serious injury. Better than most 1979 vehicles.
And as for the 1979 Ford vs. Chevy crash tests, the Ford appeared to do better. Data for the driver dummy was lost in the Chevy test, but the passenger dummy recorded a HIC 710 and a whopping 68 Chest G's. Which means that the Chevy's passenger risks serious chest injury.

+whattheheck1000 Any chance you have any info on why the carburetor has been removed and what it has been replaced with?
I have no idea.

Damn wat a tank
these were my favorite fords 78-79,the bodies were much stronger than any ford's since then.i noticed all the leaf springs.although the f-350 is a lot more truck than a f-150.
Best truck made
No you can't say their body is much stronger because new ones don't get their roof flattened as easily when they flip over.
And are those I beams for a frame? They sure look like it
damn. built ford tough!
thats 2wd too wow what a tank
I just wached the 79 chevy test the 79 ford did much better !! But the chevy not to bad but the ford much better!!
Dianne Kiefer the ford is a f350 the chevy is k20 they both have different frames
@@AlarakTheHighLord F250 and F350 in this era use the same frame

I was always worried about getting into an accident with my '79, mainly for smacking it up, but apparently I had nothing to really worry about beyond a salvage title or what have you.
That truck got wrecked, dude
What a sin! Rare F350 "Super Camper Special" with long wheelbase and special bed! I think they called them Super from 73 to 76 or 77ish.
Way, way, way late of a reply, but they made them as Super Camper Specials from 72-79, though about 78 or 79 is when Ford started doing special order-only, that's the way mine is.
Good years for Ford pickups.
Just saw the test for the 79 chevy not bad this ford did much much better!!
Very impressive I had one auto with the big 6.
Compared to the 79 K20 crash test, the F350 held up incredibly well.
It did exactly the same
watch again
+hershy314 Your right though. Compared to the 79 K20 it is better. + It held up good for a 70-80's Truck
I bought the same or almost the same truck but I can never find anything on it for specs or price. I bought it for $200 from a friend, good condition. 1979 Ford F-350 Ranger. Automatic Transmition. 4-Barrel Holley Carburetor, and that's as far as I've gotten. I can only find ads for the XLT, 150, 250, and super cab.
I just watched the 79 chevy not bad but the 79 ford did much much better!!
The plastic grill insert still looked intact!!
xD
Impressive for its time. Did better than the K20.
The 1st generation of Whistlin Deisel
It definitely needed better seat belts, but aside from that, it did great.
Okay, how come the 1979 nearly 40yo Super Duty does better in the crash test than the new Chevy and Dodge with their high strength steel frame?
Joseph K It doesn’t! New trucks have crumble zones in the front, so more energy is absorbed there. That means there’s less forces in the cabin, and going toward you. Even though it might look like this truck does better than the newer F150s, it really isn’t!
@@techguy-od2re Crumple zones *might* let you survive impact, but they won't save limbs, legs especially. A lot of cars merely don't have crumple zones at all, just any body piece molded in plastic is called a crumple zone now. Both dummies logged a mere 40 and 38 Gs in this crash, pushing a 10-15% serious injury risk, per NHTSA standards. The only reason I'd see this truck 'fail' compared to newer ones today is how the driver's side seatbelt broke loose and let the dummy ride face-first into the wheel.
Makes me wanna cry
1958 to 1979 fords best Derby trucks out there
That's an "S" code 400 V8 in that super camper special. Same as my truck has with the Dana 70 axle. I'm surprised i don't see the side brackets under the bed and aluminum slides on the bed that lock and align the campers in place. Mine still has them
I have a 76 F350 SCS
I have a 79.body and Fram still in great condition. Camper specials maid strong.
What's in place of the carb at 1:27? The steering wheel did more of the stopping than the shoulder belt. I couldn't afford to loose more teeth.
The only bad thing is that driver would be in big trouble after hitting the steering wheel that hard in a crash. Alot of broken ribs.
In the 70s it wasn't mandatory to wear a belt but if you had it on it could help a lot.
@@conchusgames3998 Sadly most people didn't wear seat belts back then especially in trucks.
@@bradparris99 yes that's true

What do you want for the box?
Can't be killed in old trucks if you hold on
Wow that Ford did way better than the 79 chevy k20
I've got a 75 ford f100 ill wreck anything modern
Very good for 1979. Way better than those Chevy Trucks
Funny i just watched the 79 chevy one. That one bent i. Half almost when it hit the wall.
looks a lot better than the 2002 f150 crash test.
Would rather take my chances with impacting a steering wheel than being squished like a bug.
crash it with a small overlap
let me get my fucking time machine
Just loosening up the wall a bit before it pushes it out into the parking lot.
How much for the bed i need it
What a shame destruct a truck like that
Ian Bono it was destroyed when it was new it was no big deal there were plenty around to test for new government safety laws in the 70s.
Didn't look like the seatbelts locked up, what's up with that?
They used a rare "Super Camper Special" - long wheelbase F-350 for this test as well. Hmm...
This was a crash test made in the 80s. They definitely wasn’t rare then..
Very strong truck
The 1979 Mazda pickup, for comparison's sake, had a Driver HIC of a whopping 3034 and Chest G's of 87!
August 22, 2015 3:09 am
Put a air bag in maybe a softer steering wheel and better seat belt and it beats a 2019. Oh yeah I need that bed
so was this done in 79 or done after to look old?
This was in March of 1980
Just got into a bad wreck this July with my 1970 f250. Fella ran a stop sign. I hit him driver side going 45, tipped me onto the passenger side, threw my passenger out of the passenger window, slammed back onto all four. And then I went head first into a Ditch. And walked away with just a small gash on my knee
Annnnnnnnd your passenger? How are they feeling? Did their seatbelt fail?
@@Mike_Costello they're doing great! And no, they were lap belts. Had we been wearing them we'd probably be paralyzed
@@JasperJames0912 WAIT, so in this kind of truck, it’s safer not to wear a seatbelt??? Cuz the seatbelt would paralyze you for life?
@@johnhodges5898 honestly, more than likely
Anyone know how much for the box?
Unless yours is also a camper special it won't fit. Look how far back the axle is.
Damn am happy to know that I'll be safe if i crash lol
and the k20 was a 4x4 and the f350 a 2wd
Old cars and trucks are stronger then newer cars today. Older cars are bigger and got way more protection. Newer cars are not safe and I will never consider a newer car or truck. Old trucks are the way to go and cars
does anyone have any videos of an 80's dodge pickup crash test? i own one and wondered how much of a death trap it is
unless you hit a concrete wall like this one you will be fine this 1979 ford only got smashed because it hit a nearly indestructible object i have a 1979 F350 ranger xlt and i got in a head on with a 1995 ford taurus at 55 mph and i came out needing paint job the taurus was totaled and the driver didn't make even make it to the hospital
in short it is a death trap just not for you but for anyone one damn fool enough to get in your way
Got any photos of the crash?
Those are pretty weak my father owned a 84’ Ram and let me tell those things dent so easily I couldn’t imagine it surviving a car accident. So when driving it, be VERY careful
Still wont by a ford but i have to admit. That ford did 125% better than the Chevy k20. I heard that in 81 GM did some more things to make them safer. still can't deny that the Chevy frame sucked. Id like to see his same test but 30 years later. That would be interesting
put a new f3ont clip on it realign it and keep going.
Just get a new front clip and twin I beam set and fix it
You know it's a camper truck axle is back.
Could still be fixed with a little time money and effort.. pretty dang good
no it would not be an easy fix
my uncle actually took a truck that was used for a crash test truck (Ford Bronco completely destroyed in the front) he realigned the frame and re-strengthened it and built it from the ground up it's hard but it took around 20k and 5 years to do it so this guy isn't exactly wrong

Watch the 79 K20 crash test video and tell me Fords aren't built better than Chevys!
Chev is Junk to begin with.
The only problem with this truck not enough power my dad had 1979 1 ton with a 400 engine .
The 400 engine was a boat anchor, the 300 6 cylinder could do better.
My dad's boss had one to as a tow truck he mad one pull with the 400 got back to the shop pulled it out and put 460 in still in there whipping ass
All ya need is a new engine, front fenders, hood, and grill. Everything else is fine
It Just a new engine that’s all nothing important, and all you need is a new everything because you didn’t make it.
I could use that box!!
heydude76 I can still use the bed
The driver is dead the way the steering wheel deformed.
Personal experience no he's probably just sore as hell
I'm sure most have said, "They sure don't make them like they use to". Watch the link, you'll be glad they don't! Kinda! I still like the old ones. ruclips.net/video/vwupWFy_NP4/видео.html
1 Ton Camper Special.
Actually a Super Camper Special.
CaptainTripsz So what makes it "super"? Another thing that's interesting is that with my truck it doesn't say "Camper Special", "Super Camper" etc anywhere I just wonder if that stuff changed in 1979?
Dave McLain
What makes it Super is the extended wheelbase for bigger slide in campers. Notice when they zoom into the bed. The passenger side wheel well looks different. That is the spare tire location accessible by a side panel on the bed just in front of the passenger rear tire. I dont know if all Camper Specials had badges but usually there would be a badge on the fender for a SCS. Also SCS's were only one ton 2wd.
CaptainTripsz Mine has the long wheel base and the spare in the right side of the bed. Also the inside of the bed is different in that it does not have a lip around the top with exposed bed pockets. Instead the inside panel goes up to the inside edge of the body making it smooth inside. My truck is also a F350 two wheel drive. My truck is a 460 automatic I wonder if all these trucks came with that engine option?
Dave McLain
Im pretty sure the 78 and 79's came with the 460 and the 73 to 76's came with 390's or maybe 460's? I dont recall ever seeing an early one with a 460 so I cant say for sure. The 77's had some mid year changes so you might find some that had the 390 or the 460. The 360/390's were phased out in 77 due to emissions.
Did much better than the plastic garbage trucks of today. U can still tell what it is.. hate new trucks👎 that are cheep and crappy..
Would you rather be in that truck or a new truck when it slams into something??
@@watchandjewelryloft4713 mine . I can still fix it .
