Hi Bold Bakers! By popular demand, now you don't need an oven or microwave to make a deliciously moist chocolate cake recipe: www.biggerbolderbaking.com/stovetop-chocolate-cake/. Give it a go and let me know what you think! :)
Gemma Stafford looks yummy i must make this but without eggs would use buttermilk...i have tried one of you carrot cake and one of your no bake cheese cake with browine crust it was a big hit..thank you
Gemma Stafford I used to bake all sorts of things on a stove top! That was before I bought an oven. Only, I used salt in place of water, and a steel stand in place of a plate! 😘
Gemma Stafford this looks DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!! And easy! Thank u Gemma!!! ☺️ you’re amazing! Btw been wanting to bake some danish butter cookies but I cannot find a recipe that convinces me, can u make some please? You’re one of the few people I trust! 👏🏽👏🏽 thank u!!!
Hello Gemma. My 16 year old son made this cake twice last week. These were his first and second efforts. Both cakes were light and fluffy. On the first day we didn't have cocoa so we substituted milo. Used cocoa for the second. I posted on FACEBOOK and the wonderful feedback is really inspiring him. THANK YOU.
I made this a few days ago and it is the best chocolate cake I've ever had!!! It doesn't even need frosting!!!! Just a little powdered sugar or non is already amazing!!! You really outdone yourself this time Gemma😍
My late grandma used to always make these cakes. I had almost forgotten about them. Thanks for bringing back such nice memories! I’m going to try your recipe.
I made it for my family and the cake turned out to be awesome- very light but moist. It was not time consuming at all and very easy to put together. My family loved it so I will keep making this every now and then. Thank you, Gemma!
Hi Gemma. The moment you cut that cake and took a slice off. I felt my heart sink and as it did my eyes involuntarily just went shut, i felt my mouth water. I am truly impressed as always only this time, its more than ever before. Thank you once again for an easy, affordable recipe. Always makes my child's lunch box exciting no wonder she looks forward to going to school.
Hi Gemma, I’m a Singaporean mum with 2 dairy allergic boys. They’ve never tasted chocolate cakes coz’ usually there’s dairy content in chocolates cakes sold outside. During this lockdown, I’ve tried searching for chocolate cake recipes to try out and using different electrical appliances (stove TOP, table TOP oven, rice cooker)... with my last 2 teaspoons of baking powder... I hope and prayed that it will turn out well... I followed your recipe but replaced the butter with margarine. Steam at medium heat for 30min, still uncooked, so I steam for another 30min, then increased to high heat to steam for another 1 hr 15 min, so that the stick comes out clean. Total 2hrs15min steaming . After I cooled it a bit but still warm, it tasted delicious! My boys were so happy finally to be able to eat a non-dairy chocolate cake! 👍🏻We tried eating it chilled and they loved the chilled version better ! 🤣I think the chilled version’s texture tasted like pound cake. I will be making this more often if I’m able to get baking powder as this lockdown causes many things to go out of stock 😅. Thank you for giving me confidence and hope you can provide more recipes for dairy free options. 😋😊🌈
Made this on my sisters birthday and her visitor said its delicious and they suggested to make your chocolate cake for sale. Your fan from Philippines.
Hey Gemma.. Tried this recipe today for my mum and dad's wedding anniversary. Wow!!!! Didn't know it would taste sooooo good. Thank u for sharing. It's was so delicious and just the right amount of sweetness. So moist and soft too. I had to cook it for around 45mins.
This is a wonderful idea! Since we have a lot of problems with our power company here in South Africa, baking cake on a gas plate is a lifesaver when the power is out and the Birthday is the next morning. Thank you.
I love your channel Gemma! I never bake a cake in my entire life, so I could say that it is my first time and by following your steps I couldn't believe I was able to do it perfectly! Thank you so much!
This is a great idea. In comments for cooking videos a lot of people from around the world mention that they don't have ovens, and anybody anywhere can could make this recipe.
Hey gemma I always make cake with stove first you will take a pot cover the pots surface with salt put a stand in middle of the pot now cover and preheat for sometime now put the cake pan and bake!! You can do this method for even bake love you so much honestly!
When I was little, my mom used to make sponge cakes or upside down apple cakes on the stovetop with a pot. Se did not use a waterbath like you, she put the batter directly inside of the greased pot. They always came out great. I had totally fotgoten!! Your cake looks deliciou!!! ❤
Dont do this to us gemma!...you r making us addictive to your recipes...i never remember trying any of your recipe that got failed or i havent got a complement on that!...thankyou so much for such teaching!..every video i see of yours i dont have words to express how thankful i am to you!😘😘😘😘😘
Our family’s oven broke a couple months ago, and I used your three layer microwave funfetti recipe to make my sister a birthday cake. For Fourth of July, I whipped up your whole cheesecake microwave recipe, shocking friends and family. Your no bake/ microwave recipes never cease to amaze me. Can’t wait to try this one!!
This is brilliant! MORE stovetop recipes please. Upside-down pineapple cake, brownies, yellow or white cake - or just about anything your amazing, creative mind can think of.
First! Also I requested for this video, Gemma. This is such an awesome recipe. Would definitely try it out. Also we can put salt or sand at the bottom on the pan. Have a great day, Gemma
Hi Gemma..I made this cake yesterday...it turned out amazing..I've tried to make cake on stovetop so many times before bt everytime it became so rubbery that I almost swore never trying again..bt Thank God I tried this one..Thanks a lot for such a helpful recipie😘😘😘

I feel a bit leery that I will not be able to do it, but I am becoming bolder being a part of Bigger Bolder community. This cake remind me of the chocolate cake my Ma used to make for us when I was a child. Simple with just the powdered sugar. She did not do a design on it, but I think if she had known you she would have. Thank you for this video. It made my day! PS - this is absolutely true, our microwave broke last month. Amazing! Hi Gemma! I'm an amateur baker, I'm trying baking as a hobby that I'm really passionate about. I tried making lots of chocolate and vanilla cakes but they somehow aren't the right ones. The results are good but not great. I came across this recipe yesterday and immediately wanted to try it out. I did, and baked the cake in a rice cooker, and it was SPECTACULAR. I had a leaky springfoam pan which was unusable but I sealed it with Wax Paper on the bottom and the thick batter that this recipe yielded was just the perfect consistency to not drip out of the pan. Because I whipped it for half an hour straight and it didn't whip up. Hi Ammar! Thank you for your lovely note and well done with my Chocolate Cake recipe. A few things: 1) For whipping cream, this is really all you need: www.biggerbolderbaking.com/whipped-cream/; 2) If you're looking for a fudge frosting, you can use my recipe here: www.biggerbolderbaking.com/chocolate-fudge-frosting/; 3) You can make your own Microwave Cake here: www.biggerbolderbaking.com/3-layer-cake-made-microwave/. Please do let me know how you get on. :)
We’re going camping during my husbands birthday and was panicking about a cake for him. This literally just took a load of my mind. Thank you so very much for sharing your recipe. Can’t wait to try it 🤩🥰🙏🏻
I tried this today during this coronavirus pandemic. Tomorrow (March 30th) is my younger brothers bday and my oven doesn’t work so I looked up how to do this. Thank you!!!
Hey Gemma This is just to thank you for this wonderful way of baking. I mean I felt that this cake was better than the one I bake in an oven. Honestly, I thought it would turn mushy since there was steaming involved but surprisingly it was wonderfully moist. I guess, the next time I make a proper birthday cake with chocolate ganache icing and all I will steam a cake instead of baking Thanks
That looks amazing!!!! Great for people who want the satisfaction of a baked cake at home but don't have an oven!!!! Thanks for the delicious recipe! Have a great day Gemma! PS like my exams are right around the corner and i havent made anything for like 2 weeks which is very unusual and was very sad but ur video made me very happy so thank you!!!!

Is it safe to have a plate in like that? It wont crack or something? I'm pretty new to making food and baking so I'm just asking :)
not if you use a ceramic plate.. after all they were fired first lol
I worry about the same thing
I wouldn't worry too much, as Barnesi94 said ceramic plates are fired. But it's not the same as putting it in a hot, or even moderate oven. You're putting the plate in with the water and heating them both together, so there won't be any cracking due to heat shock, and then it's on a gentle simmer which is a lower heat than in an oven, and finally water is a great conductor of heat so while the plate is immersed and hot, you've also got it surrounded by water which is constantly pulling heat from everything and turning into steam, so the heat is never concentrated in the plate as it would be in a hot, dry oven.
Thanks for helping!
Thanks for helping! #BoldBaker

This is really similar to the stove top chocolate cake video on Emma's Goodies.
It's been a method that has been done for years and I've received a lot of requests for it so happy to share my version.
Lily Drayton My grandma used to always make cakes like this in the summer. No one on RUclips invented stove top cakes!! Can’t we all get along?
No need for anyone to be defensive :) There are many, many stove top cake videos on RUclips, but these two videos are the only ones I've seen that use this *particular* method using water and steam. How is that a criticism? I just thought it was interesting.

We’re going camping during my husbands birthday and was panicking about a cake for him. This literally just took a load of my mind. Thank you so very much for sharing your recipe. Can’t wait to try it 🤩🥰🙏🏻
I hope you have a great time camping, Marina. Thanks for watching!
Hello!😀❤❤❤❤❤
Hello!
I tried this today during this coronavirus pandemic. Tomorrow (March 30th) is my younger brothers bday and my oven doesn’t work so I looked up how to do this. Thank you!!!
You are welcome. You can get the complete recipe here www.biggerbolderbaking.com/stovetop-chocolate-cake/
That looks so delish. My mouth is literally watering. PLEASE MAKE MORE FOODS ON A STOVETOP.
I will see what I can do.
Gemma Stafford Thanks a lot. You inspire me a lot. Your recipes are so easy to follow and made me less scared to experiment with new things.
Hey Gemma
This is just to thank you for this wonderful way of baking.
I mean I felt that this cake was better than the one I bake in an oven. Honestly, I thought it would turn mushy since there was steaming involved but surprisingly it was wonderfully moist.
I guess, the next time I make a proper birthday cake with chocolate ganache icing and all I will steam a cake instead of baking
Thanks
I'm delighted you enjoyed my chocolate cake, Alex. Isn't it just lovely? I'm working on all sorts of new ways to Stovetop bake so stay tuned.
I used to do stove up cakes until I bought an oven, works pretty well.
You're ahead of the game! :)
Your always doing something unique so that I think your my favourite baker
Thank you!
