  • What if Guarma never happened in Red Dead Redemption 2? IS guarma really needed as a chapter in rdr2's story of arthur morgan and the van der linde gang?

The physical trauma of guarma also exacerbated Arthur’s TB. I believe if he’d not been injured with the O Driscolls or gone through guarma his symptoms would have developed more slowly.

The doctor mentions it at least a couple times during the game (during the mission and if you visit him later). In real life, getting to the dry American Southwest is what prolonged Doc Holliday’s life (I wonder if Arthur was based on Doc, dying the same way at the same age).
The irony is the places Arthur couldn’t get to, Great Plains and especially New Austin, likely could have given him more time.

I believe Guarma was necessary for the overall progression of the story. It definately is a detour from the rest of the game, and unexpectedly breaks up the gameplay pattern that the player has grown accustomed to by that point. During my second playthrough, I really accepted Guarma even more than my first playthrough. It's not a long section, and it has plenty of action to keep the player engaged, and there are some very important character building events during that segment. What I noticed during my second playthrough was just how fast the story moves once you get back to civilization. Guarma really is the last straw where Arthur becomes the man he really is deep down. Arthur's outlaw dreams, fantasies, and blind loyalty to Dutch are completely broken beyond repair, and he realizes what a waste of his life it all was. Guarma pretty much breaks Arthur's chains whereas Dutch doubles down on his outlaw ways and goes further and further into survival mode instead of taking accountability, and realizing how his actions led to such harsh consequences for himself and everyone around him. In Guarma, Dutch proves that he will never quit running from accountability no matter how many people get in his way, how many people die, or how many people he has to kill, or deceive to run from his crimes. Arthur accepts accountability, and chooses to finally go his own way. Such a traumatic event both mentally, and physically takes a toll on Arthur to the point where he is basically a dead man truly walking the path of redemption, and Dutch becomes the tyrant he really is, and finally gives up on the illusion of being a man of the people. It also depends on how the player plays the game, but I always go the heroic route in that game because it's the most rewarding path available.

On the concept of dutch. I believe if, it was modern day, he would be diagnosed with BPD. One of his possible symptoms is big goal focus. So he puts all his focus on his practically unreachable goals. This can lead into delusions and lower temper control. Guarma really shows how dutchs mental health deteriorated after the Saint Denis heist. His speech was more shifted and he could barely form full sentences.
The fact that he said he 'understood spanish' when in reality he didn't and his brain went out if control and spiraled. Another sign of BPD
I love chapter 5, which is a very controversial opinion, for the fact it has so much character development like dutch and micah. Truly sowing who they are and what a waste the gang was for the other guys and girls

Hard to envision yourself as scrapping for survival when you get thousands of dollars, gold guns, and fancy clothes. But being outnumbered, outgunned, destitute, and no food? Yeah that's probably what we should've had in the whole game.

I’ve always felt that Guarma in part was Rockstar’s attempt at creating the “movie within the movie” that takes place in the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. In that movie there’s a very long detour all about a civil war battle over a bridge. It does advance our main story in ways but is also its own isolated tale. I feel like Rockstar was trying to pay homage to it with Guarma.

  • @titustavares335
    @titustavares335 8 месяцев назад +13

Guarma is important because that’s where Dutch wanted to go in order to escape the law, but only found more trouble. It’s also where he finds a cause to fight for, cuz all dutch wants to do is fight. He’s a savage in a savage land. It’s the perfect backdrop for a crazed beast to show his true colors.

I would have loved to have seen a civil war happening within the gang instead of the slower fracture and splintering that happens. I think it could have put a lot more gang members on screen in interesting ways as their loyalties and motivations for being within the gang are tested and revealed. I think it also could have contextualized more what “the good old days” for the Van der Linde gang in its heyday was like. it would be fun to explore a very hurt and vulnerable part of the gang that leaves to follow Arthur, who doesn’t want to leave but has had his hand forced, may not really a very good leader at all (lol), and then who also will be revealed to be sick and dying as time progresses. Plus! if he leaves, it will validate a lot of Dutch’s paranoid musings, which compounded with Hosea’s death, could really send him off the rails. I could see a lot of drama, action, and betrayal there within the gang 😊

The thing about Dutch killing the old woman that gets me is the fact he gives her the last bar of gold with the understanding that it is payment for her to lead them through the tunnels. She then pulls a knife on Dutch and threatens him for more. I think Dutch wasn’t completely justified in killing her but I also don’t view her innocent as so many try to make her out to be. She pulled an knife and got aggressive with him in an effort to extort more gold off of Dutch. I’m always bothered by how the game paints the entire situation as Dutch being evil but the fact she was clearly extorting and threatening Dutch and by extension Arthur gets glossed over.

    • @eddiejonesiii6254

Yeah, that always bothered me, too. Like, sure, it may not have been the most *moral* thing to do, but if Dutch hadn't done what he did, then the old woman would've either came back, made noise to alert the authorities, or stabbed him and/or Arthur. The fact that she started brandishing her knife on her own accord means that we can argue self-defense rather than outright murder.

I powered through Guarma as fast as I could first play-through because it wasn't very appealing to me. I would have preferred Arthur washup ashore in Lamoyne somewhere and get captured by the Lamoyne raiders or the remainder of the blood feud family's and have to find a way to escape or destroy his captors but in the act of that get really beaten down like he did in Guarma so there is not any of the storyline of Arthur coming to terms with his life and mortality and his final days trying to save the people he cares about before his time is up. If your playing a high honour game i mean but I would assume low honour Arthur would just take off after seeing Dutch's deterioration and go lone wolf nomad and enjoy his finals days somewhere as far away from everyone he could get.

I think the Guarma chapter was also important because it really showed how and why Tahiti would not have worked for Dutch and the gang even if Dutch really intended on getting them there and they did somehow reach Tahiti. Much like Tahiti, Guarma is a tropical island where Dutch and the rest of the gang were outsiders, and if they got to Tahiti they probably would have caused trouble and been driven off the island-if they survived long enough to escape Tahiti, that is.

Great video! The pros of Guarma was seeing how Dutch became more ruthless including selfish, seeing how Dutch's greed including his criminal act causes many consequences, and seeing the new scenery. The con of Guarma was how it make Arthur not have much exploring the island, micah not caring about Hosea including Lenny's death, and many others. I wasn't a fan of Guarma due to it leading Arthur to be sick and not enough spending time with the gang for other missions. I wished that RDR2 could have allowed ArthurMorgan to have more missions with Hosea, Mary Beth, Sean, and Lenny. I would have liked the idea of Hosea telling Arthur before he died saying be careful of Dutch and thank you for being loyal to me. The death of Lenny and Hosea in Chapter 4 hit me really hard because they were good to the gang and cared about Arthur despite challenges. If there was a RDR2 remake I would have liked the idea where Arthur could rescue Hosea including Lenny from dying, Arthur rejecting the idea of doing the st Denis Bank mission, and Arthur deciding to not rescue micah from prison. Also I think that Guarma chapter increased Arthur's sickness to TB. Also I wished that there could have been a mission where Lady Belle could approach Arthur Morgan, Hosea, Lenny, Sean, Charles, Susan Grimshaw, and the rest of the gang to spy on Micah because Lady Belle heard that Micah was a rat. Another idea I thought that I would have wanted is how Arthur, Mary Beth, and Hosea have a plan to secretly disguise themselves as people wanting to buy property in blackwater to recover the money with the help from Trelenay and have a short mission of Arthur and Mary Beth have fling.

I don't blame Dutch for killing the old lady in the cave. rather or not she was gonna turn them in is beside the point . She pulled out a knife to Dutch Vanderlin. No one can do that and live to see another day....

I thought the guarma chapter was perfect, it was short and was the ultimate way to show that there was no running from the new world order, which I believe is one of the main themes of the game
but think about it, even when the gang unintentionally ended up in a random island they were still easily found, imagine how devastating that would be to people trying to escape, this is not a Micah defense post but it’s really no surprise that this was also when Micah turned into a rat, the writing was on the wall

High Honour ok but if I’ve been playing the game robbing and killing folk it just irks me to see Arthur be so judgemental when honestly it’s one of the more justifiable of Dutch’s killings.

The captain of the boat that Dutch's gang board to is really dumb. First of all you will have to cancel the sailing of your boat if there is bad weather. Why? Well the worst thing that can happen are 2 things A: Your ship will be sank by a storm. Which happened in the game & they ended up in Guarma. B: Because of rouge waves your ship can split in half causing it to sink in much worst way possible.
