I am up to 16 games now. My space limit for the basement arcade is probably 20-22. I too love acquiring them and repairing them. I also like doing the cosmetic restoration, although I don't go for perfection. I like clean original condition and generally just replace damaged CPOs, t-molding, and re-paint kickplates and coin doors. I sold my first game last year - a project Chase HQ that I found out I really wasn't into. Since I have space for 4-6 more games, I am not in a hurry to downsize. I have a storage unit for household items (two daughters are out on their own, but I still have a ton of their crap), but I don't use it for arcades. Once I reach capacity, I will probably start selling my less played games and replacing them with new acquisitions. I don't think I will ever allow my collection to spill over to storage. My first three candidates to eventually sell are: Kung Fu Master, Pit Fighter (currently running a pandora box), and Ikari Warriors. I love Ikari, but I recently go hold of an all original perfect condition Victory Road, and will eventually put the Ikari board in that cab so I can swap between the games. No need for two rotary Ikari cabs.

I'm trying to keep the arcade mentality alive in my family with my OG DK arcade and hoping to get more to show my young girls what the "good ol' days" were like! Hmmmm, they made a lot of Pac-Man cabs so they usually sell for a decent price. It depends on what era of arcade gaming you’re interested in. 90s most everything was Jamma so it’s easier to work on. It’s a really great question, it would make a great podcast episode actually. 🤔

I'm not a collector, I'm a player. Like you, I would love to have an arcade, have all the cabs and pins I want... but unless I win the lotto so I can buy the games to collect and preserve and pay someone to service them so I can just play them, I would. I just don't have the money, time, or most of all space for these beautiful behemoths that tickle our childhood memories. I have 3 emulation machines - a Star Wars Arcade cockpit replica I built and put a pc in for Star Wars, flying, driving, and games of that nature. It was a fun project that I constructed myself and love to show it off. I have a vpin machine with a lot of the bells, whistles, shakers, and movers to make it feel more realistic and have over 500 pins to play on that. And I just did a restore of a Star Wars Trilogy DLX cab, also with a pc for all stick classics, fighting, trackball, spinner, and light gun games along with consoles. I've probably spent about $3,500 on all 3, which at less than the cost of 1 pinball machine, I can play anything I really want up through the mid 2000's. More power to those like you that continue to preserve and repair arcade machines!

All running via emulation cause MiSTer is better but limited and still expensive. Oh and a virtual pinball.

I got into collecting because I grew up with the games in the 70s & 80s, not because I wanted to fix or restore them. Learning how to repair them is sort of a necessarily evil of collecting them. I still have a ton to learn.
I figured out 25 years ago that the best way for me to do this was to build custom MAME machines so I could all the games I wanted in the small space I have available, in addition to collecting some specific dedicated games that were less suitable to emulation for various reasons. And since I use all original 1980s classic cabinets, 19" CRT arcade monitors (including MAME machines built with color and b&w vector monitors, and raster monitors of both horizontal & vertical orientation) and interchangable control panels also made with original classic parts of all sorts, I could have pretty much every game I ever wanted, for far less money, in far less space, and far less to maintain than they way people normally would collect them. I even retain some of the artwork, but that is the part I give up the most without dedicated games for every single game. But I can always go to a retro arcade to appreciate that seeing them as a museum. What I really care most about is playing the games as I remember with the correct kind of monitors (not modern LCD screen) and the original classic controls (not the modern controls). When I'm playing a game, the last thing on my mind is how nice the cabinet artwork might be. I want the games on screen to look & feel like the originals, and they generally do.

This is why I made a TikTok. I was hoping younger people would see me show how things work, how to fix, my experience with it, and get interested. Prices are getting out of hand though and younger people don't have the space, time, or money. I think too many of these machines get piled up in people's todo list or just half fixed and put on the market for a ridiculous amount of money. With prices being what they are everyone is better off spending $20 to go to a Past Times or Galloping Ghost.
Good on you for taking a step back. I hit 3 machines and I went woah woah, time to take a breath. I have plenty of space but I can't play a dozen machines enough to be worth having them sitting in my house. I think too many collectors are more about having games than playing them. I have Galloping Ghost near me so I can either go there because I love games, or hoard games because I love owning them. I only own the games I truly love that I can't get the same experience with any other way.

It's a sad truth we can't keep them all, I've become more of a preservationist than a collector. As mentioned we are the last stand we are the only ones who will still care about this. This new generation destroys games for multicades. Storage has become extremely expensive, but also as mentioned other collectors want to help. Find those people and share a warehouse rental. Trust this works and gives you access to games you can experience you either wouldn't have purchased or wish you had.

Right next to his practice is an amazing retro arcade where kids have their birthday parties. The arcade brings in enough revenue to pay for the utilities and he pays for the space as it’s in the same building as his dental practice. My kids and their friends get to play these classic games and they are in like new condition. Long live the ‘80s!

Hey man, big fan from across the ocean... I'm from Portugal.
I grew up with all these fantastic games that you've shown (born in 1981).
I am a gaming collector... and I wish I had space to collect arcades also. I only have one cabinet... and it's one of those with multiple games. But it's the real deal, coin operated and the works.
Here its really, REALLY expensive to buy an authentic and original cabinet...so I envy you. 😉
Anyway... I wanted to say thanks for all that you have shared.

Hey Ralph. love your videos!! I got the bug about 7 years ago to learn how to build my own arcade and Vpins. I also live in Phoenix. When we bought our house it had a finished garage with it's own AC. It was convenient since I'm a musician and needed a place to rehearse. I don't play with a band anymore so my space is perfect for playing my arcades. I still can't build during summer (I do my builds on my patio during the rest of the year) but having a cool place that doesn't bug my family to work on and play my machines is cool. Literally! throw a good sized wall AC in your garage. It won't help your space issue but it will keep you comfy when you want to play and work on your games in the garage. Keep up the good work man!!! Keep cool! It's coming!!!

How many machines do you have? If you had to keep 10 as your permanent collection forever which would they be? For me your sit down Sinistar is a must keep!

Oh wow, that's a tough one, but I will try.
      1. Sinistar Upright
      2. Sinistar Cockpit
      3. Baby Pac-Man
4, Street Fighter II CE - Big Blue
      5. NARC
      6. Robotron: 2084
      7. Smash TV
      8. Golden Axe
      9. The Grid
      10. Q*Bert
That's not easy to do, I contemplated this for at least 10 minutes, but I'm sticking to this list for now.... haha.

I've been collecting for roughly 25 years. What I've learned along the way is not to just grab everything available for the sake of grabbing. At one point, I had so many machines in my garage that I couldn't even walk in there.
Keep what you really enjoy and sell the rest. Limit the game area to a specific space. Don't rent storage units. They are too expensive. Rent or buy a warehouse if you really want to buy everything. Most of all, keep your workspace your workspace and invest some of the money you get from selling off the machines you are not attached to towards good quality tools, heat and air conditioning so that extreme heat or cold is no longer a factor for you.
It also pays to be very organized. My tools are always put away in the same locations when I am finished with them and I use a spreadsheet to keep track of what repairs are needed on a given machine and really don't worry about superficial cosmetic issues.

You have a good approach using cabs to learn and gain experience. Seeing the space it takes to be in Rob Berk style "Collector mode" has to be a realization. When you move the games on to their next home, I know you want be fair and not gouge. Be fair to yourself too and don't short change the effort and value you put into them. You're providing a valuable service to the community in many ways (education/entertainment/inspiration with the videos, preservation of history and the games themselves). Thanks again, Ralph!!!

Good talk Ralph. Yeah man, you make some great points there and for me, the one which resonates the most is to stop and enjoy the games. I've recently put much arcade journey on hold but have instead gone to a new local arcade (on your recommendation) and it's great. Put my headphones in, listen to W.A.S.P and play some pinball. Then, when the time I'd right, I can have another go at getting the games I love at home.
    Thanks again man. Stay cool.
