@@msnos6245 u can. Look up ur states requirements for homeschooling. I dont do a traditional method of teaching. K12 and other programs like it require a schedule so I use an un-school approach. My boys are 9 and 10 we focus mainly on reading, writing, and math. U can incorporate daily activities like cooking as a teaching tool, ur using math and science to cook. Let ur kids help u cook and teach them about measurements, as u go. U dont have to sit at a table for hours, kids are not supposed to sit still that long and most struggle to do so anyway. Documentaries are an amazing tool, u get to re-learn with ur kids as u teach too! Look up unschooling homeschool and see if uts something u can manage. I love the time with my kids, because time flies. I wish u the best, mom guilt is real weather ur able to homeschool or not ur kids will never forget ur love them and thats all that matters 💜.

You are so right about teaching our black children to read before kindergarten! I taught my daughter how to read the summer before kindergarten and she's been on the top of her class ever since. She's going into 2nd grade and we're working on reading comprehension this summer. I vowed that my black child will NEVER be the kid who struggles in a school where she's one of two other black kids in her class. Nope!!! She will excel!!!!✨️✨️✨️✨️

It still amaze me how I homeschooled my children through 8th grade. I’m happy I took responsibility of my children’s primary education. I accomplished a lot for my children. They did very well in high school and both hold master level degrees from great universities. I’m proud and happy for my children and they are adulting well with great jobs. Blessed and thankful! 🌼
Primary school education could make or break a student's academic career. It takes a lot of input from the parents at home to help reinforce what is being taught at school and it is very sad that some parents don't understand this. They think it is solely up to teachers to teach their children to read.
If you're in a classroom, you understand why individualized attention is almost impossible. However, I do agree that more attention should be paid to struggling students. Small groups work, but teachers have to have support, resources and open mind to do targeted small group instructions.

I am not black but I support your point of view 100%. My child is four but she was reading reading by the age of 3 and knew all the letter sounds before 2. As long as we make it a fun process then why not. I am a homeschooling single mom who works as well so it is possible.

I’m a retired teacher. In order for children to be successful readers they need phonemic awareness, that is recognizing sounds at the most basic level, good phonics instruction, learning effective strategies for reading comprehension like summarizing, questioning, predicting and good vocabulary development. Parents can indeed help their children in that.
@@margh737 Exactly not all parents have the ability to and may even speak a native language. So these children are then screwed? Isn't this what TEACHERS who get degrees in early education there for? Yes parents play a part, to support the teacher in their child's learning. But come on many times the parent is relying on the teacher for techniques and direction for the child's learning.

However, parents should not be considered delinquent if they are unable to do what Akeeba is suggesting. School is not just a place to facilitate learning, but it should also be a place to instruct and develop skills in students for learning to take place.
I was reading when I entered kindergarten. Heck, I was reading before kindergarten. I 100% agree with this message. Read them books and put words on everything - that’s how I learned. The part we’re leaving out though is that a lot of these parents can’t read either, so they’re leaving it up to the school system to give their kids what they didn’t receive.
I taught my daughter to read and do math before she started school. That was about 40 years ago. She was skipped in the 2 nd grade and went to summer school in HS. She graduated from school 3 years early. The schools she went to encouraged her. I think that it’s important to find a school that supports achievement….. even if it maybe out of your district.
Don’t encourage people to register their kids outside of their district because then those outside districts start to face the same teacher student ratios as the poorer performing schools. Teacher Student ratios are very important when ensuring that children are getting all the attention that they should.

As a Black woman I don’t think a day has gone by when I haven’t received or noticed racist, prejudiced or passive aggressive behaviour towards myself or other Black people. Therefore if I were a parent, I would personally deem it irresponsible to place the education of my vulnerable child with people whose motives, beliefs and behaviours I don’t know about, solely in their hands. I am not a teacher nor would I have the resources to home school but the least I can do is make sure my child can do the basics - reading, writing and, maths skills BEFORE going to school, so that no one can hold them back. Ensuring your kids are properly educated requires constant monitoring when they are in schools. It’s an ongoing job, but worth it in the end. Perhaps the fact that it is such a big responsibility is why I don’t have kids! 😂. But good luck to all parents out there, just try and do your very best at the end of the day.

Parents think that teachers must raise their children. Many of them have no time for their children. I feel so sorry for many children who are brought into this world and do not get the care, love and attention they deserve.
New Subscriber. Found you today, 10/24/23. This!!! I used to teach public kindergarten-6th! It baffled me when I had children who couldn't SPELL, RECOGNIZE, or WRITE their own names. The children couldn't count to 20, didn't know basic shapes or colors, recognize 20 sight words, and couldn't use scissors. The parents expected me to be their first teacher. However, some of the kids had cell phones and knew lyrics to some of the most vile music... Being a public educator, one who cares and wants the best for the children is hazardous. Congrats on being able to get out, with your health, and start a financially lucrative business.
Bless you for your work. My mom homeschooled my older sister and now teaches at the school she found when she stopped homeschooling. I could not imagine being a teacher. And thank you for educating other adults about how to prepare their kids for social expectations if they are going into a regular school.
Definitely have your children reading before entering school! I am 40 years old and I am still grateful that my mom taught me to read before I entered Kindergarten. My reading level was always grades above my current grade level. By the time I was in 8th and 9th grade I was at a college reading and comprehension level. Math was my nemesis lol. But I think it's wild that people would reject giving their child a head start!
Homeschooled people are different and have different values. They even did a study where kids instead of reading the first two years of school, they did science lessons and talking and then taught them to read and they were on par with the kids that had formal instructions instead. Reading is necessary but the age to teach it is debatable, some homeschoolers aren't worried about being behind.
BCPS doesn’t even have enough teachers for the children in their schools to be able to afford to fire any of them. We successfully completed our kindergarten year of homeschool here and looking forward to 1st grade. Thanks for your videos.

100% agree. I'm a certified school librarian, pk3 to 5th grade, dcps. Kindergarten is its own curriculum as other grades. Having taught in Europe and two other states, some of our students & their parents expectations are too low. But as for me, a 33 year old black female w/6 nieces and nephews, I believe every single student can & will read while in my care!! Btw, I'm taking this year off as a mental health break. With it being back to school season, I get sad seeing the students I love so dearly, but the anti-black racism and colorism from jealous white females & gay black and white males is overwhelming. The stress of it all contributed to weight gain, depression, and is just not worth it!!

In no way, shape, or form should a teacher be a child's FIRST teacher, the parents should be helping emphasize what the teachers are teaching in class...especially something as important as reading.
Teacher here. My boy started kindergarten "decoding " at a 4th grade reading level. He was a fluent reader . His comprehension skills were at the 2nd grade level.

Parents need to start taking accountability. Their child not reading is their fault. More times than not they don't prioritize education. They aren't reviewing the work with the kids at home. Say they don't have time to do homework etc. As a parent you are your child's first teacher.

The sad fact is, if you're sending any kid to public school, they need to be reading before K. You are 100% correct. I have three kids, two homeschooled and learned to read at 7 and 5 respectively, but my youngest was only 4 when their dad and I split and he made me send them to school. To this day she reads less well than her sisters. I tried on the margins to teach her, but the school undermined me at every turn! Preschool and K and beyond! She is homeschooling again and trying to catch up at 15, and it's hard for her. I'm so angry, and homeschooling parents who always homeschooled don't get it. I've done both, in school kids don't have time to go at their pace. Once behind, always behind, and their self esteem suffers greatly.

When my son was 3 years old his teacher pressed the importance of learning to read as early as possible. By the end of the school year (pre-k) my child could read very well. The time we dedicated to reading and arithmetic really paid off.

I have some experience in the classroom. And I can say I agree, I've worked in schools that are 90% minority. And, kindergarten is not a stretch. By entry into first grade your child should have a good grasp of phonemic awareness and blends. That leap is real. By third grade your child should be reading for information.
Thank you for letting parents know about reading. I think reading is very important as well. I homeschooled my son when he was 5/6. I got rid of the TV for about 5 years. We went to the library a lot. The Librarians are your best resources for finding books/ audiobooks your children might like.
My Haitian mother didn’t play : We learned letters , numbers colors and shapes …while in daycare by kindergarten we learned reading and writing Everyday after school for two hours we were forced to write My parents were not with bs public schools at all
They sure wont fire a teacher. Its hard to even get your child moved to another class. Especially when they start saying the teacher comes highly recommended. The last straw for me was when the teacher sent my child home with his head in the arm hole of his shirt. I couldnt take it anymore. Plus he was reading better before he started kindergarten and started to regress. I pulled him out 3 months b4 the end of the year and we have started over from the beginning. Handing that letter to the school lifted a weight off me i didnt know i was carrying.
Bring back Hooked on Phonics. I remember days when my mom sat me down with Hooked on Phonics tapes and cards while she worked around the house. I loved it. It was hard to find them when my son came but my mom found our old stuff and my son excels in ELA and is a pretty good writer at age 12.
My little brother started reading before entering Kindergarten. He never went to preschool. At home my mom taught him and when he and I played, we played school, mostly. He only spent 1 week in Kindergarten. The following week, he began first grade.😊

I totally agree with you. I had an enormous hand in helping my son how to read phonetically when phonemes and graphemes, diagrams, blends, glue sounds, control r sounds and much more. When my son came into 1st grade as a READER which he was a kindergartener, which was half days while I was working back in the 90s. My son could read better than every 1st grader in that school and he was suppose to be in kindergarten. I will NEVER forget the day I ask his teacher Mrs. O’Connor to help me, help him with materials that help with comprehension. She stood there with her pedagogy master degree holding self teaching children how to read and they sucked at it and said she didn’t know any information or resources to help my son. Maybe she didn’t know because she did a poor job teaching students how to read. My son was fluent and the students were emergent readers after late February. She even asked me to stop teaching my child phonetics because they taught whole language. I told her, I was so sorry but the train left the tracks when he was three. I work at a school now and we are still seeing this issue with low reading efficiency on reading when I left to work with my son in a homeschool setting. Nothing has changed.
I stand with you. My grandson was reading at 21 months and was reading in day care. At his graduation they pointed out that this the kid who was reading at 2 years old to the class. He is a math whiz and is doing algebraic equations and fractions at age 7 years old. Some children are born that way but others have to be taught. Once parents or teachers recognize this they should immediately address it and work to develop their skills. Parents should put forth the effort to prepare their children to enter school and that means teaching them math as well. Make sure they also develop great communication skills
It can be bothersome if you let others control what you're doing by helping children read. You're doing what most parents don't know to do or don't want to help their children read. That’s true. Your child should read, count, know shapes, colors, do simple adding and subtracting using modalities, know basically kindergarten curriculum to go deeper into education and not start out behind. Children should know their names, address, phone number. Know how to spell your legal name not just their nick name. Just a few things to teach your children.

As a working mother at the time I couldn’t home school but I moved several hundred miles to a city that offered better public schooling AND I was very proactive with her teachers, homework, activities etc. Parents have to be proactive no matter what! Our kids (black kids), are not able to compete with other communities in education and it’s very sad.
My son is reading as he enters kindergarten this year. I've been doing short reading lessons with him for almost 2 years now. Sometimes it's a frustrating process, but I'm grateful we've stuck with it. My mom taught me how to read before I entered kindergarten as well. There's no doubt in my mind that my mother's sacrifice is primarily responsible for my success today. No teacher even comes close.
I was reading by Kindergarten. I was in honors classes since the 2nd grade. We (my siblings & I) used to do highlights workbooks everyday including our homework. Homework needed to be done on Friday because my father was not going to be up on Sunday night to help us.
I see all perspectives. And I'm a teacher, but kids thrive off of structure and routine. Especially in an environment where you have 23 to teach (as I do). It's amazing that you can homeschool your children. That's my dream!
I'm so grateful for the fact that my Mom read to me. It helped me want to read and know how to. By the time I was in 1st grade, I had to go to speech class, so after my speech class, I would have to get to my class and catch up to what they were reading and I wind up learning how to speed read as well. -My Mom teaching how to read and reading to me, -My speech class that took time away from my english class and made me have to find where they were and speed up my reading in order to fully participate in the story telling and answering questions which allowed the Teacher to grade me well on participating ( all these things made me college level reader by the time I was in 7th grade Oh and my Hearing Teacher ( Mrs Abrams ) who I had because I had a hearing impaired problem followed up with me to make sure I was getting my notes and stuff for my classes and made sure if I had any problems, we would go over things. So I was set up for success in that way. So Teachers are to invest in their student but ( it starts at home) I never had to go into a lower class level. Remember... Teachers have but so much time to teach ( each different type of kid ) individual, one on one special time. So the teaching has to be 1st at home where rhe parent can give the ectra time Teachers can't. **Parents and the village they have for their kids to learn well is the glue for a childs ultimate success Keep pouring into your kids and the kids around you. They will remember your contribution to helping them with their education later
Awesome video. The new York city school system has the same issues. I have three children 1 is working, 1 is doing awesome in college and I have an elementary student all three were good readers. They all could read and write before kindergarten and they continued to be aw3some readers, writers and have great vocabulary.

Thank you for your opinion. I introduced reading to both of my children. One caught on the other didn't. The one who entered kindergarten without knowing how to read in Fairfax, VA bypassed all the children who could read and by 3rd grade he was the top reader and his reading SOL scores were highest in his grade as a black child. So let's not stress and pressure our kids or ourselves. God has all our children. Do our best as parents. Keep perspective please. 😊
The schools around my neighborhood are bad and I don't think my child's education should be up to a lottery...we homeschool from TK to now 3rd grade this year. Best decision ever!

I agree with you. I taught my daughter to read by age three. I had to repeat 3rd grade becsuse I did not learn how to read. It really damaged myself esteem. I went on to graduate from univetsity. Parents are THEIR kids first teacher.
Our parents taught my sis and I how to read before we were old enough to start school. They read to us and had us listening to books in Spanish, French and German in addition to our native English. We also had the books to match the audio tapes. They taught us how to give short Bible talks and presentations as early as ages 4 and 8. We were dirt poor. But that did not stop them from making sure they educated us. They never expected teachers to do what they felt was their responsibility to do.
I started teaching my son how to read at 3, he's 14 now and he is 5 classes away from graduating high school. I started homeschool with him when he got in 9th grade.
I’d like to hear your thoughts on the correlation they believe comes from forcing reading at a very young age and dyslexia. I have 5 kids and my oldest I was able to teach her how to read phonetically by 3 years old but my next was almost 7 with the same amount of attention and time to phonics but excelled in mathematics by 3. And no we’re not wealthy we make about 56k a year for a family of 7 so most of our curriculum I put together myself from free or cheap resources.
Hi Aleena I agree I taught all my 7 children to read write know their colors and numbers my oldest son who is 28 years graduated with a regents diploma the highest one in NY state, if I didn’t take time to teach my children what would happen ,we as parents are their first teachers before they enter school they should be taught even if it’s the basics.

Akeeba Hello! I started the process of teaching early. During pregnancy, I played music, talk sessions & languages. I mentioned to group sessions during lunch. Several comments coined in to say 'the baby can't hear you' & I said I hope my baby can hear me...he or she is alive. After I had my baby, I read to her, singing as she grew. Bed time stories, watched her play & spent time outside. Many parents don't understand how important it is during the growth period to have a good relationship with your children. I did a lot of positive things with my her life to help her along the path she had in from of her. Each phase is very helpful during the growth stage. I took the time to assist her so she was ahead of any curve the system had in place. Success! ❤love❤
I have been homeschooling my kiddo since birth. I am in a number of homeschool groups. I am always amazed by the parents who post things like "I just pulled my 6th grader out of PS and realized he can't even tell time! The school failed him" or "I just pulled my 14 year old out of PS and they can't even count back change! I just realized the school kept passing him along!".....Have they never asked their own kid what time it is at home? I swear atleast once a week I yell from the shower asking my kid what time it is. Have they never brought their kid to a store and let them pay for something? How do you parent for years and not even know what your kid is or isn't learning. But sure, blame the teacher who has your kid amongst 30-60 other kids for 180 days.
I totally agree that black children must know how to read before kindergarten. Plus I think they need to learn penmanship and cursive. Our society is deteriorating. Taking control of our education is the best way to hold on to and honor our culture.
Parents need to reinforce at home what is being taught in school, which means even though your child goes to a school building to learn you are still responsible for your children's education. We work so hard with our 9 year old, and she can read, but we have the hardest time teaching her comprehension. I don't know how to get my child to actually follow the instructions. She's so smart, but she does not like for us (the parents) to teach her. It is so stressful.

It still amaze me how I homeschooled my children through 8th grade. I’m happy I took responsibility of my children’s primary education. I accomplished a lot for my children. They did very well in high school and both hold master level degrees from great universities. I’m proud and happy for my children and they are adulting well with great jobs. Blessed and thankful! 🌼
Primary school education could make or break a student's academic career. It takes a lot of input from the parents at home to help reinforce what is being taught at school and it is very sad that some parents don't understand this. They think it is solely up to teachers to teach their children to read.

If you're in a classroom, you understand why individualized attention is almost impossible. However, I do agree that more attention should be paid to struggling students. Small groups work, but teachers have to have support, resources and open mind to do targeted small group instructions.

Teaching should ALWAYS start at home first.... from 1-10 years old there was never anything taught to me in school that my mother didn't teach me first at home!

My child is four but she was reading reading by the age of 3 and knew all the letter sounds before 2. As long as we make it a fun process then why not. I am a homeschooling single mom who works as well so it is possible.

I’m a retired teacher. In order for children to be successful readers they need phonemic awareness, that is recognizing sounds at the most basic level, good phonics instruction, learning effective strategies for reading comprehension like summarizing, questioning, predicting and good vocabulary development. Parents can indeed help their children in that.

However, parents should not be considered delinquent if they are unable to do what Akeeba is suggesting. I was reading when I entered kindergarten. Heck, I was reading before kindergarten. I 100% agree with this message. Read them books and put words on everything - that’s how I learned. The part we’re leaving out though is that a lot of these parents can’t read either, so they’re leaving it up to the school system to give their kids what they didn’t receive.

I taught my daughter to read and do math before she started school. That was about 40 years ago. She was skipped in the 2 nd grade and went to summer school in HS. She graduated from school 3 years early. The schools she went to encouraged her. I think that it’s important to find a school that supports achievement….. even if it maybe out of your district.
Don’t encourage people to register their kids outside of their district because then those outside districts start to face the same teacher student ratios as the poorer performing schools. Teacher Student ratios are very important when ensuring that children are getting all the attention that they should.

As a Black woman I don’t think a day has gone by when I haven’t received or noticed racist, prejudiced or passive aggressive behaviour towards myself or other Black people. Therefore if I were a parent, I would personally deem it irresponsible to place the education of my vulnerable child with people whose motives, beliefs and behaviours I don’t know about, solely in their hands. I am not a teacher nor would I have the resources to home school but the least I can do is make sure my child can do the basics - reading, writing and, maths skills BEFORE going to school, so that no one can hold them back. Ensuring your kids are properly educated requires constant monitoring when they are in schools. It’s an ongoing job, but worth it in the end. Perhaps the fact that it is such a big responsibility is why I don’t have kids! 😂. But good luck to all parents out there, just try and do your very best at the end of the day.

I believe it’s unwise to leave the education of your children ENTIRELY in the hands of strangers, of course not everyone has that luxury. What is wrong with giving your children a helping start? Unfortunately people have their own biases, prejudices, issues etc to deal with and I believe children should be protected from this as much as possible when they are most vulnerable.

New Subscriber. Found you today, 10/24/23. This!!! I used to teach public kindergarten-6th! It baffled me when I had children who couldn't SPELL, RECOGNIZE, or WRITE their own names. The children couldn't count to 20, didn't know basic shapes or colors, recognize 20 sight words, and couldn't use scissors. The parents expected me to be their first teacher. However, some of the kids had cell phones and knew lyrics to some of the most vile music... Being a public educator, one who cares and wants the best for the children is hazardous. Congrats on being able to get out, with your health, and start a financially lucrative business.
Bless you for your work. My mom homeschooled my older sister and now teaches at the school she found when she stopped homeschooling. I could not imagine being a teacher. And thank you for educating other adults about how to prepare their kids for social expectations if they are going into a regular school.
Definitely have your children reading before entering school! I am 40 years old and I am still grateful that my mom taught me to read before I entered Kindergarten. My reading level was always grades above my current grade level. By the time I was in 8th and 9th grade I was at a college reading and comprehension level. Math was my nemesis lol. But I think it's wild that people would reject giving their child a head start!
Homeschooled people are different and have different values. They even did a study where kids instead of reading the first two years of school, they did science lessons and talking and then taught them to read and they were on par with the kids that had formal instructions instead. Reading is necessary but the age to teach it is debatable, some homeschoolers aren't worried about being behind.

100% agree. I'm a certified school librarian, pk3 to 5th grade, dcps. Kindergarten is its own curriculum as other grades. Having taught in Europe and two other states, some of our students & their parents expectations are too low. But as for me, a 33 year old black female w/6 nieces and nephews, I believe every single student can & will read while in my care!!
Btw, I'm taking this year off as a mental health break. With it being back to school season, I get sad seeing the students I love so dearly, but the anti-black racism and colorism from jealous white females & gay black and white males is overwhelming. The stress of it all contributed to weight gain, depression, and is just not worth it!!

In no way, shape, or form should a teacher be a child's FIRST teacher, the parents should be helping emphasize what the teachers are teaching in class...especially something as important as reading.
Teacher here. My boy started kindergarten "decoding " at a 4th grade reading level. He was a fluent reader . His comprehension skills were at the 2nd grade level.

Parents need to start taking accountability. Their child not reading is their fault. More times than not they don't prioritize education. They aren't reviewing the work with the kids at home. Say they don't have time to do homework etc. As a parent you are your child's first teacher.

The sad fact is, if you're sending any kid to public school, they need to be reading before K. You are 100% correct. I have three kids, two homeschooled and learned to read at 7 and 5 respectively, but my youngest was only 4 when their dad and I split and he made me send them to school. To this day she reads less well than her sisters. I tried on the margins to teach her, but the school undermined me at every turn! Preschool and K and beyond! She is homeschooling again and trying to catch up at 15, and it's hard for her. I'm so angry, and homeschooling parents who always homeschooled don't get it. I've done both, in school kids don't have time to go at their pace. Once behind, always behind, and their self esteem suffers greatly.

When my son was 3 years old his teacher pressed the importance of learning to read as early as possible. By the end of the school year (pre-k) my child could read very well. The time we dedicated to reading and arithmetic really paid off.

I have some experience in the classroom. And I can say I agree, I've worked in schools that are 90% minority. And, kindergarten is not a stretch. By entry into first grade your child should have a good grasp of phonemic awareness and blends. That leap is real. By third grade your child should be reading for information.

They sure wont fire a teacher. Its hard to even get your child moved to another class. Especially when they start saying the teacher comes highly recommended. The last straw for me was when the teacher sent my child home with his head in the arm hole of his shirt. I couldnt take it anymore. Plus he was reading better before he started kindergarten and started to regress. I pulled him out 3 months b4 the end of the year and we have started over from the beginning. Handing that letter to the school lifted a weight off me i didnt know i was carrying.
Bring back Hooked on Phonics. I remember days when my mom sat me down with Hooked on Phonics tapes and cards while she worked around the house. I loved it. It was hard to find them when my son came but my mom found our old stuff and my son excels in ELA and is a pretty good writer at age 12.
My little brother started reading before entering Kindergarten. He never went to preschool. At home my mom taught him and when he and I played, we played school, mostly. He only spent 1 week in Kindergarten. The following week, he began first grade.😊

I totally agree with you. I had an enormous hand in helping my son how to read phonetically when phonemes and graphemes, diagrams, blends, glue sounds, control r sounds and much more. When my son came into 1st grade as a READER which he was a kindergartener, which was half days while I was working back in the 90s. My son could read better than every 1st grader in that school and he was suppose to be in kindergarten. I will NEVER forget the day I ask his teacher Mrs. O’Connor to help me, help him with materials that help with comprehension. She stood there with her pedagogy master degree holding self teaching children how to read and they sucked at it and said she didn’t know any information or resources to help my son. Maybe she didn’t know because she did a poor job teaching students how to read. My son was fluent and the students were emergent readers after late February. She even asked me to stop teaching my child phonetics because they taught whole language. I told her, I was so sorry but the train left the tracks when he was three. I work at a school now and we are still seeing this issue with low reading efficiency on reading when I left to work with my son in a homeschool setting. Nothing has changed.

I stand with you. My grandson was reading at 21 months and was reading in day care. At his graduation they pointed out that this the kid who was reading at 2 years old to the class. He is a math whiz and is doing algebraic equations and fractions at age 7 years old. Some children are born that way but others have to be taught. Once parents or teachers recognize this they should immediately address it and work to develop their skills. Parents should put forth the effort to prepare their children to enter school and that means teaching them math as well. Make sure they also develop great communication skills

That’s true. Your child should read, count, know shapes, colors, do simple adding and subtracting using modalities, know basically kindergarten curriculum to go deeper into education and not start out behind. Children should know their names, address, phone number. Know how to spell your legal name not just their nick name. Just a few things to teach your children.

As a working mother at the time I couldn’t home school but I moved several hundred miles to a city that offered better public schooling AND I was very proactive with her teachers, homework, activities etc. Parents have to be proactive no matter what! Our kids (black kids), are not able to compete with other communities in education and it’s very sad.
My son is reading as he enters kindergarten this year. I've been doing short reading lessons with him for almost 2 years now. Sometimes it's a frustrating process, but I'm grateful we've stuck with it. My mom taught me how to read before I entered kindergarten as well. There's no doubt in my mind that my mother's sacrifice is primarily responsible for my success today. No teacher even comes close.
I was reading by Kindergarten. I was in honors classes since the 2nd grade. We (my siblings & I) used to do highlights workbooks everyday including our homework. Homework needed to be done on Friday because my father was not going to be up on Sunday night to help us.
I see all perspectives. And I'm a teacher, but kids thrive off of structure and routine. Especially in an environment where you have 23 to teach (as I do). It's amazing that you can homeschool your children. That's my dream!
I'm so grateful for the fact that my Mom read to me. It helped me want to read and know how to. By the time I was in 1st grade, I had to go to speech class, so after my speech class, I would have to get to my class and catch up to what they were reading and I wind up learning how to speed read as well.
-My Mom teaching how to read and reading to me,
-My speech class that took time away from my english class and made me have to find where they were and speed up my reading in order to fully participate in the story telling and answering questions which allowed the Teacher to grade me well on participating ( all these things made me college level reader by the time I was in 7th grade
Oh and my Hearing Teacher ( Mrs Abrams ) who I had because I had a hearing impaired problem followed up with me to make sure I was getting my notes and stuff for my classes and made sure if I had any problems, we would go over things.
So I was set up for success in that way. So Teachers are to invest in their student but ( it starts at home)
I never had to go into a lower class level.
Remember... Teachers have but so much time to teach ( each different type of kid ) individual, one on one special time. So the teaching has to be 1st at home where rhe parent can give the ectra time Teachers can't.

I have three children 1 is working, 1 is doing awesome in college and I have an elementary student all three were good readers. They all could read and write before kindergarten and they continued to be aw3some readers, writers and have great vocabulary.

Thank you for your opinion. I introduced reading to both of my children. One caught on the other didn't. The one who entered kindergarten without knowing how to read in Fairfax, VA bypassed all the children who could read and by 3rd grade he was the top reader and his reading SOL scores were highest in his grade as a black child. So let's not stress and pressure our kids or ourselves. God has all our children. Do our best as parents. Keep perspective please. 😊
The schools around my neighborhood are bad and I don't think my child's education should be up to a lottery...we homeschool from TK to now 3rd grade this year. Best decision ever!

I agree with you. I taught my daughter to read by age three. I had to repeat 3rd grade becsuse I did not learn how to read. It really damaged myself esteem. I went on to graduate from univetsity. Parents are THEIR kids first teacher.

Our parents taught my sis and I how to read before we were old enough to start school. They read to us and had us listening to books in Spanish, French and German in addition to our native English. We also had the books to match the audio tapes. They taught us how to give short Bible talks and presentations as early as ages 4 and 8. We were dirt poor. But that did not stop them from making sure they educated us. They never expected teachers to do what they felt was their responsibility to do.

I started teaching my son how to read at 3, he's 14 now and he is 5 classes away from graduating high school. I started homeschool with him when he got in 9th grade.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on the correlation they believe comes from forcing reading at a very young age and dyslexia. I have 5 kids and my oldest I was able to teach her how to read phonetically by 3 years old but my next was almost 7 with the same amount of attention and time to phonics but excelled in mathematics by 3. And no we’re not wealthy we make about 56k a year for a family of 7 so most of our curriculum I put together myself from free or cheap resources.
I am so pleased that my parents made sure we knew how to read before starting school! Do not let the trolls get you down!
Hi Aleena I agree I taught all my 7 children to read write know their colors and numbers my oldest son who is 28 years graduated with a regents diploma the highest one in NY state, if I didn’t take time to teach my children what would happen ,we as parents are their first teachers before they enter school they should be taught even if it’s the basics.

Akeeba Hello! I started the process of teaching early. During pregnancy, I played music, talk sessions & languages. I mentioned to group sessions during lunch. Several comments coined in to say 'the baby can't hear you' & I said I hope my baby can hear me...he or she is alive. After I had my baby, I read to her, singing as she grew. Bed time stories, watched her play & spent time outside. Many parents don't understand how important it is during the growth period to have a good relationship with your children. I did a lot of positive things with my her life to help her along the path she had in from of her. Each phase is very helpful during the growth stage. I took the time to assist her so she was ahead of any curve the system had in place. Success! ❤love❤

I have been homeschooling my kiddo since birth. I am in a number of homeschool groups. I am always amazed by the parents who post things like "I just pulled my 6th grader out of PS and realized he can't even tell time! The school failed him" or "I just pulled my 14 year old out of PS and they can't even count back change! I just realized the school kept passing him along!".....Have they never asked their own kid what time it is at home? I swear atleast once a week I yell from the shower asking my kid what time it is. Have they never brought their kid to a store and let them pay for something? How do you parent for years and not even know what your kid is or isn't learning. But sure, blame the teacher who has your kid amongst 30-60 other kids for 180 days.
I totally agree that black children must know how to read before kindergarten. Plus I think they need to learn penmanship and cursive. Our society is deteriorating. Taking control of our education is the best way to hold on to and honor our culture.
Parents need to reinforce at home what is being taught in school, which means even though your child goes to a school building to learn you are still responsible for your children's education. We work so hard with our 9 year old, and she can read, but we have the hardest time teaching her comprehension. I don't know how to get my child to actually follow the instructions. She's so smart, but she does not like for us (the parents) to teach her. It is so stressful.
