Three months before Mitch od’d, I saw him perform. So many hecklers. One woman would not shut up no matter what she was told. She eventually started screaming “Do Smackey the frog!” Mitch knelt down on stage and said to her “You can’t shout out the punchline. That spoils the joke. If you were cool, you’d say the track on the album.” “DO NUMBER SEVEN!” “I don’t remember that one”
It seems like he always had so much more crowd control than he thought he did. I saw one of his earlier shows he had gotten recorded and people could see he was kinda nervous, but he had the vocal delivery down and jokes written so well that they had completely forgotten he was a starting comedian. The stage fright quickly faded as he gained experience, and it was like he was meant to do comedy from way early on. From the beginning, whether it was with or without drugs, he always had a uniquely genius and simple style at the same time. He wasn't like pancakes, but pretty good weed, you'd just roll with it as it went.
This was his first special. He was pissed at the crowd for not getting into the show so he went and sat down and was about to call it. There’s a good section out there of him rippin on the crowd before this clip
I miss Mitch, I became a huge fan & got to see him live, less than a year before he passed away. I wish I could have told him how much he made me laugh, and still does.
Never heard of Mitch. Am I to understand that he's no longer with us? If so, that sucks! I love his delivery. His overall look is nostalgic. I'm a 70's baby. 1970 actually.....
If you enjoyed it you owe to yourself to search for other videos. He was extremely gifted and has better material, I love almost everything that he did but for some reason I did not like this set.
@@mikelbri6876 his audio cd of the material in this special is better imo. There was a part of the Smackey the Frog that didn't make it into this, possibly for language. Not sure. It should be available on most music platforms. After all these years it's still one of my favorite comedy albums of all time. I miss Mitch.
I've been a stand-up comedy fan for at least 20 years. Seen them "all", every style, any kind, from the great to the worse, but Mitch, my man ... is among the Few (yeah, the few) who really got the essence of stand-up comedy beyond normal comprehension. Like anyone would find the likes of Pryor or Carlin great stuff, but as a matter of fact Mitch was better then most. He so nonchalantly calls it out in one of his bits "damn, i thought stand-up was about making up jokes ... then i found out i also have to act and shit on stage." Comedy Is Only about taking a punch line and making a solid construct arround it ... so many can but so few actually do it. Steven Wright comes to mind, Jerry Seinfeld, Rodney Dangerfield, etc. Making people laugh without even moving your eyes ... now that is some deep Shit right here. I have respect for all the people who do this, but as in any particular field, just a few dig it :)). RIP Mitch.

My first years of watching stand up (in my 20's) i was all over Carlin, Pryor, Gervais ... and all them also /actors. It's also fairly possible that 2 people could think of the same joke. It's like songs sounding similar and people assuming it's copied. There's only so many rhythms people could come up with its so easy to remember a sound or something alike and not realize you'd heard it before
