  • EPISODE 3 is here!
The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is one of the toughest tests in professional golf. That's why THE PLAYERS Championship is sometimes called "The 5th Major." And that's what makes our Breaking Sawgrass series such a difficult test - because these three golfers from the RGC Community are playing the course - from the tips - just a day after the tournament. The greens are fast and firm, the rough is long, and the water is always in play.
The "Breaking Sawgrass" series features three unique players with three different handicaps attempting to overcome three different goals:
Joe Hooks is a professional golfer and the best dressed of the three. He has the most ambitious goal in our group. Joe is a +4 handicap attempting to break 75 during his first-ever round at TPC Sawgrass.
Ben Goodly is a chef, food blogger, and all around good dude. Easily the most nervous of the group. He’s a 14 handicap and setting out to break 100.
Tom Coyne is the Senior Editor at the Golfer’s Journal. He’s also the author of four books (soon to be 5) and a podcast host. He’s a 3.1 and his goal is 90.
Tom Coyne won the Golf Writers Association's Best Feature Story Award for his piece in the Golfer's Journal titled, "The Lucky Ones". Read the full story here: www.golfersjou...
Big thanks to Andy Johnson at the Fried Egg for the stunning drone footage. Check out Andy and all things TFE at thefriedegg.com/

@@BereaBallers You can see that Ben's a mid handicap golfer just by the fact that he's got a few holes in this round where he actually makes par or bogey. A real high handicap or inexperienced golfer would have pretty much no chance of making par on this course in a championship configuration, and Ben has a number of decent scores (pars/bogeys). A real 30+ handicap would just be 8-12s on every hole down the line; maybe on time on a par 3 they might get lucky and chain a decent tee shot into a 2 putt, but Ben has a number of quite reasonable holes here.

Okay, this is not roasting Ben but a serious thought: He is essentially losing 1-2 balls off the tee on most of the holes with his driver. Why doesn't he pull out a hybrid or a 4-iron off the tee and get the ball in play? Yeah it's a long tee shot from the tips but he is hitting 5 and still on the tee if he keeps pulling driver. He is not taking his medicine so to say and it's costing him.

Bc there is no medicine for saying you’re a 14 when you’ve never even played a real round of golf.

I was a bit skeptical about the series at first because I just really enjoyed Eric’s play and voice. But I’m hooked, this series is awesome and I can’t wait to see what’s next

Also for all you guys complaining about Joe …the guy is an aspiring tour pro. This isn’t just a “fun day out on the course” for him. This is a test of his game on a word class course with a pga tour set up. That said, you’re gonna respond a little differently to bad shots with no tournament pressure.

I just finished reading Tom's feature "The Lucky Ones" and it was fantastic- no wonder it won an award. A little over 2 years sober myself and wanting to get back into golf... started watching this series today and instantly loved it, now finding out Tom & Erik are "sober boys" (my term).. it's just the coolest.
Oh and Ben's attitude is great.
And yeah, some of these YT comments are ridiculous smh

What a dream of a course. I play local courses for as cheap as I can get them because poor but seeing the immaculate condition of that course has me salivating.

I really feel for Ben and I understand that it's a tough course, but I can't help but think that he just plays the entire course wrong. He's looking to break 100. He has 10 holes where he should be happy with a double bogey. Why is he going with driver on every tee and hitting it in the hazards? Just get it out there with an iron and get to the green one over GIR. That's what I do on a regular course as a 20 handicapper.

    • @totmarbz6830
      @totmarbz6830 3 года назад +2

Exactly. He keeps pulling driver over and over again while he could hit a long iron, get the ball on dry Land and play it from there. If you look at the Par 3's where he hit iron off the tee, he did really well there, so it'd be a much better strategy.

Because he's not actually a 14 handicap. He's still near beginner level and driver is the club he hits because it's what he gets off the ground more. His swing is like he went to half a golf lesson and they could only show him the takeaway
