Thanks!! It seems like as boogie-woogie moved from the bars to the concert stages, this kind of approach has been swallowed up by the need to make every boogie a show-stopper.
Always nice to hear from a fellow pianist who shares this sentiment. Obviously, there's always a time and place for shredding(!), but a little balance goes a long way..... I sure hope to make it to Norway ! Sweden is as close I've gotten so far :)
Hi Ethan, piano boogie and blues are one of my favorite music styles. It is your virtuose talent playing boogie and blues, which keep me listening each of your performances... Go Ahead and thanks for sharing. Heinz
Thanks Joe! I recorded this as kind of a throw away, after I had filmed a bunch of other tunes that had been on my agenda. Didn't think about it at all while I was playing , and was kind of surprised when I listened back. Like most musicians, I'm usually not too happy with my playing, but I actually like this one!
@@EthanLeinwand Long ago I played by ear and would have given anything to have had the internet with these kind of videos to learn from. I really enjoy listening to you play!
I've learned so much from watching people's fingers on RUclips. It's certainly an amazing tool. Though , it's not as exciting as hunting for records, or recording radio shows, or other things you had to do to hear this stuff back in the day.
Beautiful. Nice runs in the right hand. Beautiful. What kind of piano do you have? It's really has a nice sound and such a great looking barrel house piano.
Thanks David! This is a J. Bauer from about 1910. I love it the piano, but I actually just added a second one to my arsenal... a baby grand. Tho it doesn't have that barrelhouse piano look and feel, it's very fun to play and practice on. My next videos (when I can get around to them) will probably be played on the new one.
oh man. that is such style and technique. How is this guy not famous? Do you have any written versions for purchase? I haven't figured out the play by ear thing.
Glad you dig it! I don't have any written transcriptions. Sorry I can't help you there. I do read music (that's how I learn ragtime pieces) but for the barrelhouse blues and boogie stuff, my relationship is 100% based on improvisation , studying the old records and learning tunes by ear. I know there's a wide , seemingly insurmountable gap, between playing by sheet music and playing by ear. If you felt compelled to try to make that leap, here's what I'd recommend : - Learn some basic theory so you can understand the simple patterns that underlie all music. Once can see chords and scale degrees as numbers, everything starts to unlock! - Listen to the music you want to play. You need to get some of that phrasing into your ears. That's what will guide you ability to play this (or any other kind of ) music. Watch youtube videos for what the fingers are doing. - Learn a left hand pattern. Either from a video or from sheet music. - Try to compose your own melody for this pattern. Just a chorus or two. From there you can begin the process of improvisation. Change the phrasing slightly. Or change the notes but keep the phrasing the same. I know you didn't ask for all this... wanted sheet music and got a lecture 🙂
Really love it, can you share some right hand riffs to this tune. There's a tune on RUclips in Eb little like this, a boogie called Playing The Flats by James Goodwin, check it out if you haven't already. Always loved the tone of Eb and Ab but I lack in right hand riffs in them keys
Thanks for commenting! I'll try to figure out a good right hand move to show, and will make a video when I can can. I know James Goodwin's Playing the Flats! Great tune. He plays in Db which is a trickier key but has a great dark/mellow tone that can't be beat!
@@EthanLeinwand Yeah your right it is Db but almost the same base line. I'll look forward to some Eb right hand riffs soon and some more tunes from your channel. Many thanks
I Am Without Speech...Stunningly Excellent!
Many thanks! Glad you like it
One of the best boogie woogies i've ever heard :)
Thanks!! Means a lot coming from a fellow pianist!
Absolutely magnificent Sir!
Thanks Ben!
Blues metalic.
Great stuff...no rush, just cool laidback boogie piano playing
Thanks!! It seems like as boogie-woogie moved from the bars to the concert stages, this kind of approach has been swallowed up by the need to make every boogie a show-stopper.
@@EthanLeinwand Indeed...so nice to see the other approach...after all, we’re not doing athletic competition here. Hope to see you live one day.

What a pleasure to listen (and watch) you playing! Love it so much 😍
Thanks!! Glad to hear it!
This is the way of Boogie Woogie I like most! Congratulations you did an extraordinary job on it!!! 👍👍👍😁
Thanks! Glad to hear you dig it!
So good! Accompanied by left-right boogie-woogie head movements, I can listen to this type of playing for hours!
haha, my head just kind of bobbles away! Don't have much control of it, but it's usually a sign I'm getting lost in the music.
Your content is so underrated... great vid man!
Thanks Max! Hoping that if I keep adding quality stuff, then the folks who care will continue to find it., and the channel can grow.
EXCELLENT
Super!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeahhh .. again a pearl from ethan
Yeah! That’s what I’m talkin’ about!!!
Alright! Glad you dig it!
Whoa!!! Those fingers are flying!! Loved it!
Wow 🤩 loved the key choice and dynamics 🤓
Thanks Martin. In improvisations especially, I try to use dynamics to tell a story and give shape. Glad it came through here!
Sounds killer
Thanks Mark! Looking forward to playing with you at Redwood Coast Festival!
