Those opening bars of Goldfinger are beyond iconic for John Barry, James Bond and Shirley Bassey. Nothing and nobody else comes to mind in those moments. Incredible.
John - 007 Files I have all on my playlist , I liked DRF soundtrack better than the film though Barry sound changed from OHMSS I have most of his Bond soundtracks on CD
Dan Reese Me too.. a sound sequence of Barrys OHMSS Ost is my morning alarm clock :) I love his work on the Bond films and i also agree on the Diamonds Soundtrack and the film. Its very low on my list too (the film i mean, the sound on the other hand is great). I like David Arnolds work too
Dan Reese Yeah and also he had a good start with TND.. somehow Barryesque moments but other than that he made the score totally his own.. the Casino Royale soundtrack is really beautiful i agree..love it
Brings back a lot of memories hearing this music. My favorite Bond songs are You Only Live Twice and We Have All The Time In The World, especially John Barry's instrumental arrangement you can hear on RUclips. Great posting, thank you.
Say what you will about the Bond films. Good, bad or indifferent, one thing is certain: the music is some of the best ever written and recorded. Period. Iconic, powerful, incredibly beautiful. You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, All Time High....the combination of music and lyrics is truly ineffable.
I've spoken to some folks who were really only aware of Barry's music around the time of Dances With Wolves. When I tell them just how much of the Bond scores were his, it always opens up a huge newfound appreciation for his work. When it comes down to it. Barry's music is what really cemented that sense of romanticism and exotica that became a signature quality of Bond films, with each story having its own signature hooks and themes. As mark aaron alludes to in his post, there were some truly awful movies in the Bond series that still had extraordinary music, and it's really the only thing that made then stomachable. Martin and Hamlisch also did good jobs with their stints…but all the David Arnold stuff has sounded pretty generic.
Don't forget John Barry wrote the music for Born Free, Out Of Africa, Dances With Wolves, and the lovely rendition of "Smile" for the movie Chaplin, and so many many more!
John Barry to me was the ultimate romantic composer. Just listen closely to somewhere in time.......the best for me! RIP Mr Barry! Can anyone tell.me what he died from?
John Barry was a hundred times better than whoever is second. Absolutely one of a kind. I'm very pessimistic that anyone will ever do as well scoring a Bond film. A couple of the worst Bond films are made quite watchable thanks to Barry's music.
David Arnold was on fire when he scored Tomorrow Never Dies after the massive successes of Stargate and Independence Day. The only dent in that soundtrack is that "Surrender" was downgraded into being an ending theme due to studio meddling.
