I love that little yellow plane...its so cute and has been through such life trauma......poor little thing.
Honestly still flies great!
Awesome info on RM T16s, and thanks for sharing... Keep em comin! 🤗
Glad it was helpful!
Thx for the GREAT tutorial! Quick and concise, JUST the way I LIKE IT! :)
No problem. Glad to help.
Thanks for this video! I just purchased the TX16S and also have a Champ. Didn't think I would see a Champ more beat up that mine is though ;)
Haha, I push my champ to the limits... bought it used for $20 and I fly it real hard, small space, high rates, etc. even for an advanced pilot like myself it still sees some carnage!!
Thankyou for the step by step videos on setting up planes in the Radiomaster tx16s. I just purchased one and open tx seems very confusing to me, but you make it look Easy. Ive been flying for a couple of years (Carbon Cub S+, and Delta Ray 1) and I am using your videos as an aid to help me set these planes up in the new radio (work in progress).
Awesome, let me know if you have other questions or requests!
Your videos have helped me so much thank you
I’m glad!
I'd love to see more on this TX as you continue to learn on it and document your journey with OpenTX. Seems like the more walkthroughs on opentx the better. Would like to watch as your get into companion and customize with things like sound packs etc...
Yeah opentx is really wide open, haven’t messed with companion yet but I will be sure to document it when I do.
I finally received my radiomaster tx16s! Following your video, all of the settings that you showed worked for me on my old Horizon Champ. It took me a while to add expo to the rudder and elevator, but I finally got it after I figured out that you do a long press on the scroll wheel on the inputs page (what you did at 5:01). Also, I think my champ's rudder servo has gotten damaged because my elevator only move a small amount when given stick input. (regardless of expo).
Thanks for demonstrating how the multi-protocol works on the radiomaster tx16s!!
No problem! yeah the expo and rate are a little different, but looks like you got it figured out
Thank you, please keep it up..
will do. Thanks!
That Champ has had a hard life....
For sure! holding up though.
Thanks bro
No problem!
One suggestion is to create a basic model with all your timers, widgets, etc for DSM models. When you want to add a new model, select your basic model and copy it. Then you don't have to constantly recreate everything. One thing about OpenTX is that you can do something in several places, like Inputs, Mixes and Output screens. In OpenTX Companion, there is a transmitter simulator where you can test setups but it won't show you how Spektrum SAFE/AS3X receiver will react.
When you do a more advanced setup video(s), would you include a discussion on default channel order? One article I read stated that the multi protocol module had to be flashed from the default AETR channel order to TAER in order for SAFE and AS3X to work correctly. Other documents say the MPM takes care of remapping the channels internally when DSM2/X are selected not matter the MPM channel order. I'd like to keep AETR since I'll be using this radio for DSM2/X (Timber UMX, Ultrix, etc.), Futaba S-FHSS/FHSS compatible (XK K124 HC145 heli, XK A100-J11 plane from Bangood) and FPV quads, like my BetaFPV 85X HD & EMAX Tinyhawk. Thanks for the videos!
Thank you for the comment. Yeah, I am one step ahead of you, I did copy and paste my models to get them all set up. Really works well for my mixes and timer reset switches, throttle cut, etc.
In my experience with a Sport Cub S so far, I have had no issues with the default channel mapping working with the AS3X and Safe modes, as well as the selector switches and panic button. I am working on a video on that as requested by many others. I haven’t had too much experience overall, I mainly fly full manual planes anyways and everything has been flawless so far on the stock channel mapping (AETR). I too am running multiple protocols, so remapping doesn’t really make sense and like I said I have yet to have an issue, and as they say, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it! Anyways, hope that answers your questions so far, let me know if you have others. Thanks for watching!
great Tutorial. Fast, easy and direct, does this would work also in a Hobby Zone Sport Cub S ?
Good vid, I have a tx16s on the way and am planning on flying some eflite models. Would be helpful for noobs like me if you did a full setup with the SAFE 3 mode switch at some point and how to setup a high/low throw switch aswell.
Okay! I can do that w my sport cub s, stay tuned for that.
@@CustomFPV Yes!
Thx! Mine is a TX18S radio.
Nice!
I feel a little sad for that battered poor small Piper. 😊
It’s been through the ringer. got it off ebay for $15 though!
Great video, I have a spectrum 20channel battery share receiver. Will this transmitter bind to and safely operate the new spectrum receiver in a giant scale plane ? Looks like a great radio. Thanks again for the informative content !!
Will it do it Yes it will. Will the range be acceptable? probably. Would I 100 percent put my faith in it? probably not. I have yet to have an issue with the 2.4 multiprotocol module but Im not sure its worth risking your large scale plane
I got my 4in1 tx16 mkII to bind to my turbo timber evolution and the throttle and rudder work but the elevator and ailerons dont move and safe doesn't turn off.
Totally sweet viddy covering this!! Thanks so much for taking the time to add. You made my hook up to my model so easy, even fine tuned the surfaces!!! An almost total success. Here's my problem if you care to hear about it. And please help if ya can.
My E-flight Timber BNF has a Spektrum 6 channel receiver mounted in it (model AR637TA) and I was able to bind using the DSM X2F protocol. All the surfaces work plus throttle, but the TX16S has assigned the channels incorrectly, T=3 R=4(Correct) A=1 E=3 (5 unbound= should be lights) F=6(correct). It should be instead, T=1- A=2- E=3- R=4- 5=lights, 6=F.
I think I have tried everything except deleting the model and starting over, but this Radiomaster TX16S is so dang smart I figure I should just be able to configure it in the radio. Can ya help me out?
Thanks again for the awesome video! Liked and Subscribed!!! 😎
If you read some other comments they also talk about issues with hooking up SAFE. I got it to work on my Sport Cub S somehow with this exact method shown here and in one of my other videos, but looking back I can’t get it to work on my other horizon models. There must be some compatibility issues… Honestly I have no clue. Let me know if you find anything else out.
@@CustomFPV I will let you know for sure, and thanks for getting back wit me! Even knowing I'm not alone on this is comforting! LOL I'll read through the comments and watch more of your videos and see what clicks with what I might be thinking.
At first I thought it might have something to do with trainer/master settings, but I'm not sure that's likely either. The other strange thing to me is, the TX doesn't seem to mind at all, and I was able to configure the surfaces perfectly. Reducing the travels, slowing travels, using expo, reversing required servo's, etc.
I'm maidening the timber, AND the radio this coming weekend; Should be interesting! LOL It's just so weird. I'm hoping this isn't repeated using other receivers too. Over the winter I'm building a Citabria and this radio will be on deck; Different onboard radio set up though. Thanks again for your help RCMods! I'll be bawck 😎
@@CustomFPV Read through the comments. I'm getting closer maybe. I'm going to rebind without activating SAFE. This might work? The TX16s can do about anything I might need it to do for me anyway, the way I see it. So, this is a learning curve! But part of the fun! 😎
BTW, can you input on why I do not have a "RF Freq. Fine Tune" option under my "Model Setup" tab? Maybe it's the receiver not allowing it to be adjusted?
Under the "Receiver" when "Range" is selected I have a RSSI value of 93. Is this good.? I ask because I've been getting RF low and Critical alerts. Some have suggested to turn off alerts, but I'd rather not until I know I have fine tuned the Freq between the TX and RX.
Have a good flight.
@@genekeller3631 For sure. Personally outside this champ and my sport cub s I don’t have too many horizon (as3x and safe) planes so honestly i’m clueless for the most part, but i know you can still fly them and use as3x just not safe as far as I know. I’ll do some more digging and let you know what I find.
@@CustomFPV Thanks man! You're the best! 😎
hi: So are you saying that something like the UMX timber turbo will work with the Radiomaster Zorro? (I am rusty. The last time I flew, I flew with JR radio 20 years ago). lol
I cant confirm full compatibility because i have neither the turbo timber or the zorro but I do think in theory it will work, and it will at least bind and be able to be flown, but some issues with SAFE have arisen in some cases
Do you have a video on how to set up safe mode with an AR630 receiver and tx16s? I set up an aero scout with safe but cant duplicate it on my consendo evolution glider
No, unfortunately. The tx16s is a fidgety setup for safe, inconsistent at best.
Nice intro. I have a DX6 with some 60 models on it! I am thinking of moving across to the TX16s but it's such a pain to re set up each model. I know you can import models from certain protocols like FRSKY but don't know if you can do the same with Spektrum?
It was most definitely a process, I too moved from a DX6 with a similar amount of models. Unfortunately you can't import them because spektrum's proprietary closed source ecosystem isn't compatible, unlike FrSky which also uses OpenTX in most cases. The process wasn't too bad though, I would get a base "wing" model for instance, and copy it around to all of my wings from there etc.
@@CustomFPV That's a good plan. The reason I was looking at the TX16s is because on a few models an extra channel is needed so a DX8 was my initial and easiest thought but a large number of my receivers are DMS2 which under EU rules only DMSX is allowed. So unless I could find a Gen 1 DX8 which was before the EU screwed things up like they always do, I have to go Open TX. Thanks again.
I see. Best of luck, let me know if you have other questions!
Thanks...
So it seems that the big deal with this TX, besides price and number of channels, is that it can handle several different protocols.
Could you have set the left stick for rudder? That would make it nice so that it'd be consistent with a 4 channel setup.
Thank you, glad it helped. Yeah, it is a great radio. You can easily remap the channels so the rudder is on the right in the “inputs” tab.
Is the internal multiprotocol module any good? Or do you have to use a external module? I have a Jumper T16 and tried using the internal module for DSMX and the range is terrible. Unusable. Trying to decide if I should just get a Spectrum radio or a external module for the T16
I’ve had zero issues with it so far!
WHAT??? u can bind these radiomaster transmitters to spektrum receivers? That's awesome! I did not know that! So does the radiomaster work with all spektrum receivers? I'm setting up a 120cc 3D airplane with an ar12310t so I got enough ports for all 9 servos but my dx8e does not have enough channels so need a 9 channel or more but the dx9 is like double the price!! but I might go with a radiomaster for half the price!
Yes it does! works well with every spektrum rx I have tried. I have had no issues so far, but you may have trouble with the proprietary integrated telemetry systems some of the new spektrum gear has, I don’t use that so It has been great for me.
So do i need a module in the back of my t16s to operate my umx radian?
I set multi then DSM but whats the next one?
I have actually flown the model okay but today was not good.
It flew great but i got constant messages telling me POWER LOW.....then POWER CRITICAL all morning.
I did not get this before.
Any ideas please?
Nope! the internal one will work fine. DSM X 22ms is the setting
Your recollection is poor there mate. It was saying RSSI LOW ... RSSI CRITICAL. That is caused by the "fly by telemetry" used by some Spektrum receivers having a very poor range on the information transmitted from the receiver back to the transmitter. It has NO relation to the quality or range capability of the control signal sent from the radio to the receiver. Most people just disable these false warnings in the model set-up. The control range with the TX16S is comparable to that with a Spektrum transmitter. BUT nobody with even half a brain should fail to check the good range control of their gear at any different location by WALKING out to the limits of their field to confirm that they still have a solid radio connection. AND that their failsafe settings work! 😉
Will work with the SAFE and the 3 modes if you have newer a BNF ?
Haven’t tried it, don’t have any newer ones
Good video, thanks for the quick, no bull lesson BUT how do I set up “safe”, I’m a rookie
SAFE is a setting built into the plane, you simply have to setup a switch to control it (flight modes) I made a video on it, it’s on my channel, dated near this one. Thanks!
Hey I've got a question thanks so much for the video the question is is there anyway in the radio you can set your travel rates past 100% I'm setting up an airplane and I'm having difficulty getting sufficient physical Servo travel is there some kind of firmware update you can do to go past 100% I know my old Spektrum radio I could Crank It Up to 150 % to get more physical travel out of my servos pretty panicky over here lol an answer would greatly be appreciated thank you very much I got my radio the other day and I want to use it for my 100cc 3D Edge 540 airplane I'm using an AR 12310t Spektrum receiver
Yes you can! There is an “extended limits” check box in the model setup window you can enable.
@@CustomFPV thank so much!!
Muito boa suas dicas....a tempos estou pesquisando sobre reverter os canais e não achei nada...
Muito obrigado
ingles?
@@CustomFPV Your tips are very good .... I've been researching about reversing the channels for a while and I didn't find anything ...
thank you
Massive thanks for this, I have just got my tx16s and am having fun learning to drive it. I have lots of fixed wing models with spekrum and orange rx's and they are all binding well. But.....the champ was the biggest challenge - when you bound it you set the protocol to dsm2 which is what the champs rx is, correct. After the successful bind the rx light is solid and the aircraft responds. But...on the tx16s the protocol has flipped to dsmx, which I found leads to range issues (personal experience). I think I have found the fix for this but can't be sure untill I have done some range checking.
Yeah, it’s odd. I’ve been without issue so far.
I’m gonna go ahead and say thanks and then I’m gonna go ahead and hit the like button. Then we’re gonna go ahead and go ahead and move on. Ok I’m going ahead now.
Hahah thank you for the support!!
If you bind controller to a plane with as3x and safe do you have that function or do you have to have the spektrum transmitters to have it?
You can use the TX16s to control SAFE and AS3X functionality via aux switches, however any integrated telemetry may be lost because it is incompatible with spektrums proprietary technology.
@@CustomFPV okay. Yeah, main thing is to have the ability to have safe and as3x. Thank you. I will probably get the transmitter.
Can you use a switch to active the binding of a model, instead of editing and pushing the bind button?
Not that I know of, that would be nice though. With OpenTX, almost anything is possible, but something like this might take a little bit of hackery and coding, skills I don't really have.
Did you also get rssi warnings within 10 meters? I m using the ar636b
No I didn’t, I’ve used all sorts of spektrum RXes without issue. Even off brands and knock offs. l would look into the protocol settings (DSMX/2, 22/11ms, and also look into your antennas on the RX, they may be damaged. That usually decreases range.
CustomRCMods the rx is brand new, the protocol i use is dsmx 11ms. When i choose 22ms it automatic go’s back to 11ms.
Can you read rssi with the ar636 to the radiomaster?
please slow down the speak🙂exept to fast talking, very good video, thanks
Do you have to bind every time you switch batteries on the plane?
nope, holds bind
@@CustomFPV That's really good to know
Hello I was wondering If the tx16s works with android drone simulators, because I'm not sure and I don't want to end up breaking my phone or the controller. Thanks
I wouldn’t bank on it, depending on the simulator. If it’s designed to work with external controllers then maybe... but I haven’t heard anything.
@@CustomFPV thanks for the reply
@@CustomFPV by the way the simulator I use is called FPV freerider and there is an option called USB controller, so I'm guessing it would work
The title says dsmx but yours is a dsm receiver. Are you this works with dsm?
Yes, it works the same with DSM, DSM2, and DSMX planes.
On module status it saids module update recommended and it is blinking. I have mode on multi and DSM. Not sure why it is blinking.
Which module? where? you should be good to go without needed update
would I use DSMX for a Conscendo Evolution(new plane)? Can you explain?
I have no experience with it, but considering it is a horizon hobby plane then yes you would use DSMX most likely
@@CustomFPV it binds but no Safe Select
how to bind Apprentice STS 1.5m with tx16s??
Same way, maybe a bind plug for the RX.
@@CustomFPV Now I have connected my Apprentice STS 1.5 with Radio Master TX16S however I need to connect radio master buttons, such as engine cut off, Begner mode, Intermediate mode and advance mode?
Hard to explain in the comments, but I would look up those videos in the form of OpenTX tutorials. It’s all in the OpenTX interface now, just like any other plane.
Can you use the tx16 with any spektrum rx?
Most all, it binds with DSMX/2 11ms and 22ms. some features are proprietary to spectrum and may not be available though.
@@CustomFPV thanks, did some research and it is possible to use spektrums rx. Cuz that's all I have, my spektrum TX crapped out on me and I refuse to pay their price for a new one. But it would seem as3x and safe is still an option with the tx16. Wish I knew all this before I wasted my money on a dx6e
I don't understand why you are flying spektrum on AETR? Isn't spektrum TAER? Why didn't you change it? I'm not going to fly a plane like how you set it up in the video (aileron stick for rudder?) LOL
It has something to do with the DSMX transmission from the TX16s. Obviously it is TAER on the RX end, being a spektrum RX. I haven’t had to do any switching around after creating the model in the RM, so the channel assignments must automatically switch over before the signal is sent out from the radio.
Dont you have to buy a module to do this?
Not with the 4in1 multiprotocol module built in. with ELRS, yes.
What receiver you need to bind
DSMX or DSM2 is built into these planes
@@CustomFPV but isn’t only for spektrum receivers bind or whatever
I can't find dsm on my transmitter does anybody know why
you need to go to the protocol selection on INTERNAL RF. Select multi then select the DSM protocol (they are alphabetical)
@@CustomFPV ok thanks
Same problem here, DSM isn't listed in Internal RF. Any ideas?
@@cymon5352 Which version of the TX16S do you have? You need the 4-in-1 module version for Spektrum NOT the single CC2500 chip version OR the ELRS version. You would need to add a 4-in-1 module (or a Spektrum Module) in the JR bay to use those for Spektrum gear.
How to beat up a plane
would you believe me if i told you I bought it like this for $10? lol
Just a suggestion but, for the 99.9% of the possible audience who are not Italian, could you get an assistant to drive a couple of 6 inch nails through your wrists (at the correct spacing to just operate the sticks and buttons without continually obscuring them) before you start your next video? ;-) :D
I think I will pass on that, close decision though :)
@@CustomFPV LOL. Ah well it was just a thought. ;-)
Have a nice day anyway Luigi. :)
thx for the vidoes but you speak way way way too fast
I get that a lot, this is an old video!
You talk too fast and the screen shouldn't darken during filming. Just saying, had to replay 5x, good for you I guess.
This was last year my guy, I was making quick videos to answer peoples questions and by no means were they oscar winning productions. They get the point across and have helped many people. I am aware of my talking speed in these videos and have improved. Thanks for watching!
