Hello John! Big fan of your teaching and Zen like insight for a couple years now. Im hiding here in Wisconsin and my bjj club is the FVGC. I would be honored to suggest to you our way of eliminating alot of the injury scenarios you have mentioned in this video. We have limited mat space but our mats are spring loaded. Very comfortable. So we start from a one knee up one knee down position. Then slap hands and off to the races. Completely eliminates any freight train collisions. Hope this helps! If i ever get out your way i would be honored just to talk with you let alone roll. I too am an aging warrior of 51 yrs old. After starting organized sports at 4yrs old thru college then starting my bjj journey by joining our club with my 12 yr old son the body has become weak from the injuries and miles but my spirit is strong. God bless John.
John teaches and practices a lot of judo and wrestling techniques so stand up is a major part of his sessions. Typically it was 5 six minute matches from stand to submission. Only on the really bad days and packed houses was it rough or dangerous with the amount of bodies. Rarely though did I see serious injuries. I remember seeing someone get a heel in the face from a standing throw (they were grounded) but it rarely happens when people are careful.
I jumped guard in my first gi class, and the coach told me to never do it, and showed me a video compilation of injuries from jumping guard, never did it again.

Once thing I always remembered from my early days at Renzo Gracie's Manhattan academy was, when you're sitting on the mat, NEVER put your hand down on the mat and lean on your arm. Didn't happen to me, but someone else was doing that and two guys were rolling and one of them landed right on his arm and snapped it like a twig. Kept my hands in my lap after that.
It's true. Dislocated my shoulder in BJJ practise after my partner had my cuff and collar, sat down throwing me onto my shoulder and landed on me . 50 mins later I left A&E in a sling (not his fault or mine but a freak accident with uncontrolled flying body weight)
A white belt in his first ever roll was partnered with me and he jumped on my side. I collapsed with my knee bent inwards and it popped. I’ve now torn my MCL and have slight meniscus tears. It is only after this accident that the coaches are showing the white belts your video and showing us what is illegal to do…. A lil late for that. I don’t know if I have the courage to do this sports anymore.
I'm a half decent judo player and use tani otoshi all the time and I 100% agree with what he's saying. It's a really dangerous technique for people who don't know it really well
First point John mentioned happened to me and blew my knee out total rupture of my ACL, Grade 3 MCL tear which also pulled out my tendon from my femur also had a grade 1 LCL tear and have a bucket handle meniscus tear all from someone jumping guard on me. Spent 7 months on crutches 🤦🏻♂️
I think its just being young and trying different things. We all go thru different looks and styles, not always good ones lol. Maybe trying to hard to be different from everyone else. I'm not a mustache kinda guy personally but everyone's different.
Such important details The jumping guard resonated so much with me You can see tons of injuries from this on the internet, and idiots still do it. Some people are really reckless and don't give a crap about their own or other's safety.
I quit BJJ because of a torn LCL caused by a guy jumping guard on me. Funny that the #1 thing he said is the one that put me out of commission... And it happened EXACTLY because of the reasons he elaborated on: active sparring and a bladed stance, causing weird angles. The guy jumped, I tried to evade and he landed on the outside of my extended left leg. The snap was very loud!
I love how the person recording this made sure to show what John was demonstrating and not just focus on him sitting on the ground pointing at the techniques just out of view
True story, It's important for full disclosure and so this things will never happen again I used to train with John Danaher back in the day and I jumped guard on him and fell on his head and now he's bald.
I still be live taio toshi is the most dangerous throw/move, I've done judo many years and i believe if done wrong and you react defensively the wrong way it's the most dangerous throw, i was 90kg and the guy I was sparring was 130kg he went for it with poor technique and I defended stupidly my knee got stuck he drove his weight forward and my knee snapped tore the acl completely broke cartridge and completely shattered the femoral condyle which is the knob of the bone I was out a good year but my knee was never the same so my advice is most dangerous moves like this must be performed with perfect technique and if not don't defend it just allow yourself to get thrown or even throw yourself because it's when you try and fight against it it makes things worse
As a judoka whose current favorite throw is Tai Otoshi, I understand and sympathize with why you believe that. I also learned the hard way about injury from over-resistance when my partner pulled O Goshi and I fell wrong not too long ago
I miss the time when the Ryan brothers, Craig and Nicky Rod were all training in the blue basement. I hope they get past their issues and group up again. B-team is killing it right now but I think with John they'd be unbeatable.
The only time I've ever injured myself was while I was messing around at my friends house with a group of friends and somebody tried to jump guard on me and I tore something in my knee as we fell to the ground, it seemed like such a stupid injury at the time but it happened so quickly I don't think I could have prevented it with how we fell and how he pulled me down. He was also 30 pounds heavier than me which I'm sure played a part in it as well
As a former (over 12 years) Judoka and a beginner at BJJ, sadly no schools around no more. I can tell you this about the nutcases that jump into someones standing guard. PREPARE TO BE BODYSLAMED. If you gona harm my body for no reason than your narcicisme (you jumping guard), I will use the best defence against it by bodyslamming you repeaditly and the suplexing you into the wheelshare for life. Beter you than me. This is where martial arts gets backed up by legal self defence. Man, i love Judo AND BJJ, but jumping guard, even if you are good with it, WILL hospitalise people.
He’s right, falling body weight is absolutely the most dangerous thing. I had a grade 3 ankle sprain and tore all my ligaments, it was pretty painful and I still have instability in the ankle to this day (it’s been about 2 years) so yeah, don’t mess around with body weight and uncontrolled jumping, it’ll mess you up 😂
I wish we could see the one on tani otoshi, I use that one all the time although by his explanation I do believe I understand what he meant... Which would be not to do it latteraly but only direct backwards
I want to note the reason why tani atoshi which is the move john was talking about is dangerous because the bjj world do it wrong with horrible form and they break there own legs you must learn to do it correctly ive taught people to do it no gi from clinch and works beautifully but you must practice it properly the bjj guys try to pull the guy on to there leg which is sooo stupid you dont drag the person you slide your leg behind them they trip.over it and you transition to mount nicely
Wish this was the rule set for all tournaments if someone jumps guard or submission on me I’m slamming him through the basement. Very risky and dangerous for both people
Had to get neck surgery due to uncontrolled falling bodyweight. Much bigger guy had me in a front headlock and ended up falling directly on top of me while still holding my neck.
Not sure who was recording but would be great to see the movements John is pointing at while he's talking rather than just show John talking about a position

@@Ahrbok why the hell would you not go to a doctor hahahahaha
Thats a great looking mustache on Gordon lol.
Nope not 4 me
Don't know whats wrong with garry and gordon when it comes to beards and hairs
Especially garry changes his whole face like every 2 months
I think its just being young and trying different things. We all go thru different looks and styles, not always good ones lol. Maybe trying to hard to be different from everyone else. I'm not a mustache kinda guy personally but everyone's different.
Magnum P.I. stache. Tom Selleck had the best mustache and that's a fact.
@@bjjbrawler1 I think Burt Reynolds and of course, Chuck Norris, could be #1 also. Depending on the day and year lol.
Such important details
The jumping guard resonated so much with me
You can see tons of injuries from this on the internet, and idiots still do it.
Some people are really reckless and don't give a crap about their own or other's safety.
I am a white belt and I got a rib broken by a guy trying to jump into side control and landing knee first on my flank.
Just why..
I’m a white belt and I’ve been training for three months. I absolutely love this sport, I think I have found a lifelong passion.
Good for you!
Don't get hurt
@@graciegjjyou will get hurt, get it fixed heal up and get back to it. Been doing it 20 years now, i will roll until i physicals cant anymore.
Gordons stash is on point
Camera man is the type of guy who forgets he is choking person while he's listening to John explain things. Aaaa few hours later...
Don't do this in my class............ but in a tournament go for it!!!
LOL
I'm a big boy and had a small 135 pounder jump guard on me. Nearly broke my leg. There just isn't anywhere to move.
Slam city is the only alternative unfortunately
Damn, what if you jumped guard on someone in a street fight (hopefully on grass), and their legs just folded inward?
@@nicksalvatore5717 then you win
@@leopardii6565 wouldn’t feel right lol
First time I heard Danaher swearing
John is a unique guy it’s sooo crazy to me like blows my mind
2:36 gordon with the Ron Jeremy stash!! 🤣🤣
I broke my leg when someone jumped gaurd on me. It was awful
Gordon sitting there quiet and respectful. Never too good to learn.
could listen to john all day err day
This makes Garry Tonon's competition flying and jumping techniques even more impressive since Garry can't practice these while training!!!!
They certainly practice it in private, just not in the public classes
Every gym should go through this list with its students every few months.
This is the best jiu jitsu video on youtube
re-title as:
techniques to instantly win in MMA
I also learned the hard way about injury from over-resistance when my partner pulled O Goshi and I fell wrong not too long ago
thanks for all wisdom.
Simple and effective wisdom and guidelines👍💪
Absolutely important.
Now I know why Mikey doesn't pull guard and butt scootches
Let’s take a moment to appreciate young Gordon’s mustache 😂
Training smart and safe.
I miss the time when the Ryan brothers, Craig and Nicky Rod were all training in the blue basement. I hope they get past their issues and group up again. B-team is killing it right now but I think with John they'd be unbeatable.
The camera man is obviously in love with John.
I tore the meniscus in my knee when someone jumped guard on me. So stupid.
Same but jumped on my back, surgery next month 🤦🏻♂️
Great editorial decision to not show the techniques he was describing
The legend!
1. Jumping Guard
2. Tai Otashi takedowns
3. Groups falling/rolling into other groups at the gym (not being aware of your surroundings)
lol . I did not recognize Gordon back there hiding behind Steve Stiffler mustache.
Lol young Gordon and Nicky Ryan! How cool!
What's funny is a guy got injured in the silver hall card yesterday from the exact thing this guy is talking about. Uncontrolled body weight falling
He was also 30 pounds heavier than me which I'm sure played a part in it as well
0:50 Nicky is a baby 😂
Someone jumped guard on me once. Almost snapped my leg. It hurt really fucking bad and I couldnt walk right for a couple months
A guy tried to pull guard. He slipped on sweat. I slipped on sweat. My jaw slammed into his knee. 8 years ago? It's still not right.
Your jaw or his knee??
@@jasonablah7702 my jaw is still not right his knee is fine
Jump guard (and throwing body weight in general), tani otoshi, be aware of other people rolling on the mat and don't throw people too hard
Is that Gordon Ryan 2nd on the right?!
Yes
Thank you
As a former (over 12 years) Judoka and a beginner at BJJ, sadly no schools around no more.
I had a grade 3 ankle sprain and tore all my ligaments, it was pretty painful and I still have instability in the ankle to this day (it’s been about 2 years) so yeah, don’t mess around with body weight and uncontrolled jumping, it’ll mess you up 😂
Had a guy sit on my knee just like Danaher mentioned. Fortunately no injuries, but could have easily occurred. Be careful with that one folks!
@5:37 mark the dude selling it badass! Homeboy ran into him when he pushed the other dude with that single leg😂😂
Had to look up the tani otoshi to even know what it is. Looks nasty when people mess up
Hitachi Shintaro did a vid on this recently.
Judo boooiiiii
Unfortunately I've hurt a few people with that as a novice, the risk was never explained prior to sparring.
@@scarred10 how many did you fuck up before you learned?
@@francismeowgannou5322 3 but nothing serious damage. The point is the coach should have banned it seeing we were all judo novices at the time.
I wish we could see the one on tani otoshi, I use that one all the time although by his explanation I do believe I understand what he meant... Which would be not to do it latteraly but only direct backwards
I had a neck injury 10 years ago in training my arm was trapped on my waist I was picked up and dumped forward onto my neck
What ab ass who did that to you
Bravo...he forgot to mention a thorough overview on choking and it's safeguards for both participants
Undercover Gordon with that mustache
Not sure who was recording but would be great to see the movements John is pointing at while he's talking rather than just show John talking about a position
jons an interesting dude. ive never heard of a gym banning... any of these lol. especially a gym as high level as his. what an interesting mind.
You can't train with broken legs.
Pretty much all gyms ban flying triangles
Great camera work not
What was Tanya a Toshi?
Can someone confirm if this is the move prof. Danaher is talking about? Tai otoshi.
m.ruclips.net/video/OdbKKQqmZn0/видео.html
@@Daland9 It's tani otoshi. Tai otoshi is also a dangerous technique imo but the professor here talks about this: ruclips.net/video/G3PHJdyjz8o/видео.html
Sarp Başaraner thank you 🙏. I can see how that could mess up someones knee
What was the takedown from the knee called? Because I want to do the safe version
@@Daland9 i think tai is worse than tani. Tai is a flat drop to your back. You can roll through tani if you tuck your chin.
Also, wear a rash guard 24/7 to avoid all risk of abrasion
Jon Jones Has Entered The Chat
nicky ryan looking like a pre-schooler in this xD
John said "Tani Otoshi" and "Kosoto gake", look them up lads and safe training.
Rare mustache Gordon in the background
Bruh film the demonstrations
Jumped guard once, guy landed on my nuts with his knee. Never again
