I like my golden coloured oak, thank you. The white, not nearly as much. But, I still have my mother's oak dining set, that was blonde oak, before my day. No doubt it would have been very pretty with the original shade.
That was my first reaction, too. I LIKE my golden oak. That pickled white look is part of a fading trend, and is as boring as the "color" grey that has permeated our world.
Oh wow…this finish is beautiful! So many people will rip out an entire kitchen of oak cabinets and could get another 10+ years out of good solid cabinets with an updated look!! Perfect…thank you!!🥰
Or believe it or not you can just use Sheet Rock Mud, float them out like doing a patch on a sheet rock wall, sand them down and you have perfect cabinets to paint.
My daughter just primed and painted her kitchen cabinets from that honey oak to icy white and they're beautiful. It took her a week to do it herself, but the end results are gorgeous

Nice job Wes! I see so many houses for sale with tired old golden oak cabinets that would be completely transformed and updated with this process. You're a good teacher and make the process understandable at every step from start to finish.
Thank you so much for your videos. They are exactly what I was looking for and such a big help! As a teacher, I can tell you, you do a fantastic job breaking down the tasks and explaining things so well. You make it easy to follow. Thank you so much.
I had those golden oak cabinets - I washed them done really well with TSP then applied Mission Oak stain with satin urethane - it took so well - made them darker and got rid of that bland yellow - then a took a black paint and kind of darkened the edges, corners & crevices of the panels - sort of like a glaze - they came out so well - I couldn’t veer too far off course because all of the trim and moldings in the house are oak, but those cabinets were just too yellow - and they have so much more dimension now - I love them
Anything considered outdated is that in only certain people’s minds. I love oak and would give my eye teeth to have real oak cabinets instead of the homemade plywood cabinets put in this farmhouse in 1965. But at least they are newer than the cabinets in my laundry room that were built in 1932. Remember to be grateful for what you have. If you can change it, fine. Just don’t talk down other’s choices. They may not be able to afford to change things or they really like it the way it is.
Without looking for it, I found the video I needed because I was thinking of painting a small cabinet that is in whitewash and giving it a nice color. You are my inspiration, your work is excellent. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Wes 👋 It’s been a pleasure watching you work on this cabinet! You’ve made something that felt so overwhelming feel doable now 😊 I really appreciate it! Thank you!!!

Perfect timing! I have the golden oak cabinets but in the shaker style that I plan on painting in the next few weeks. Had planned on just white but I may have to try this instead! (But with a gray glaze) Also my oldest son’s name is Wes. Great video, thank you!
Wes, I love this cerusing technique for redoing the kitchen cabinets or other cabinets in the house. I have the same in my house although my cabinets are made from ash wood. I'm seriously thinking of doing this to my kitchen cabinets. I do have one question though & it may be a stupid question. After you've changed the color of the outside, what do you do with the color of the inside of the cabinet which is the golden oak? Do you paint it the color of the primer you put on it or what? It's impossible to ceruse the inside of the cabinets. Actually in the lower cabinets it will be impossible to even paint those areas that go back into the counter that you can never reach. I love your videos! Thank you so much for putting this detailed information out there & also responding to people's questions!
I love this, would like to paint kitchen cabinets white for that "farmhouse look" but counters have a lot of brown and green and floors are an orangey hardwood. Would it go? Or would you have another video on staining hardwood floors also? Thanks. 🤷
A lot of people will be bummed out when golden oak comes back in style (any day now). Not me, my house is full of it and my property value will soar. Well, that's what I'm telling myself anyway
I enjoyed your video, you explain things very well...like a patient teacher. Your voice is also easy to listen to. I don't have the strength or physical ability to do this, yet I watched your whole video. Thanks for sharing your skills
You’re so awesome to do these videos! Looks fantastic! I can’t wait to do this! Waiting for the humidity to go way down! Will have to be a winter project! 😀 thanks Wes! You’re the best! I could listen to your voice all day!
Having rubbed down/back to expose the grain, I find it much quicker to apply a ‘ liming wax ‘ at that stage. Leave few hours and the buff up . Works a treat ! ✔️ OR you could chalk paint at that stage too, then apply clear wax , leave few hours, then buff of etc
Thank you for this! That's the style of cabinet doors that are in my kitchen and I really appreciate you showing the process on the door with that arch adding a bit more complication. I love this finish! My brain is buzzing with all the color combination possibilities! Edit: scoop edge, cathedral arch. Got it. Good to know for reference. Thanks!
Great video Wes. Have vanity in the garage and 80% done with the prep. Picked up the needed tips for two coats of primer and sand afterwards. Will have it done this weekend and ready to reinstall. Will tackle kitchen and laundry room after wildfire season in the PNW. This will save me $20K for kitchen remodel.
Thanks for the idea, I redid my bathroom cabinets with this method. Doesn't look like youtube lets me post links to show a picture though. I thought it came out reasonably well. Now to work on my kitchen with it, the bathroom was more of a practice run. I used the same primer tinted to Pearly White. I used Rust-Oleum cabinet transformations Java Brown glaze, which went on thinner so I let it soak for 5 mins before lightly wiping it off. One panel came out a little darker because I stripped it (it was my test piece, which I used for various other stain/paint approaches). The other panels I just wiped with acetone, which isn’t quite as bad as lacquer thinner.
Thank you, Wes. Wow brand new , good looking cabinets. This video is what i needed. We were going to rip off those golden oak cabinets ( just bought our house a month ago) after saw ur video , i got second thought. Will let u kno how it goes. Thank you
Your work and explanations are great! As someone who likes to do the minimum ( I know I shouldn’t), can you please explain why you did two coats or primer? Since you want to reveal the grain when you stain and rub a lot of the paint and stain off, why is it necessary to do the two coats of primer?
Hi Glenda...I thought I mentioned in the video that I did not get good coverage with only 1 coat of primer and so I had to do a second coat. Thanks for watching. Wes
This looks like what I’ve seen called ‘pickled’. Would that be another process? It’s a brilliant way to light up and energize the appearance without stripping. How wonderful. I hope to find an oak piece I can have fun with like this. It’s a Wow, for sure.
@@gypsyscometotown Yes, thanks. I figured as much. I’ll research that at some point. I once did a lot of furniture building and refinishing of antiques. I prefer methods now that are as nontoxic as possible. Haven’t been able to tolerate VOC’s for several decades.
OMG I totally LOVE THIS - Was going to do months ago and put on hold and just watched again and gotta do it. I would like to know what color did you tint your primer to please? There are so many different "whites" - Thank you so much
Yes, there are many colors of white. As I remember, I had it mixed to a light cream color with no specific color match or number. Thanks for watching. Wes
It really does. I have shaker style cabinets in my 1924 craftsman home, and am doing some updates, but don't want to lose the 1924 character... want it all to look like you just stepped back in time to 1924. I have a lot of red oak Mission style furniture in it right now... was thinking perhaps a red oak glaze ???
Thank you for showing how to do this on the cabinets. I was trying to figure out how to do this without using the spray gun. This is how I want to update my 60's cabinets with out replacing the real wood cabinets.
We're getting close to doing our cupboards. We got everything to do them now but I am nervous as heck but wont know if ya don't dry your an awesome teacher..🇨🇦
Destiny. I KNOW this isn't for my husband and I. We still have outside house paint 'stored' in the foyer from three YEARS ago. We got about half way...I give up.
If it took you one whole day to do a cabinet, you can do ten cabinets in ten days. When you break it down that way, it doesn’t seem too bad. That’s what I intend to do. Not a rush. I don’t really care how long it takes me. As long as I don’t have to pay $3000.00 to paint my cabinets like my daughter did. Mine would probably be even more since I have more cabinets! I’m 74 years old. I have all the time in the world.😄
@@mildredjeff5024 This is an excellent way of looking at it! As long as you're not as easily distracted as I am, and stay on task you'll have a gorgeous kitchen in less than two weeks! Good luck to you. Maybe share a photo? Thanks for the sane way of looking at this chore. ;- )
Absolutely beautiful job! Not to mention your explanations of the whole process. I am considering re-finishing walls and ceiling in every room of a tiny home I’ve purchased. It’s wall, ceiling ect are all pine with the same golden colour as your oak cabinet. Quite frankly, after 6 months of living in it , I’m sick of it. I want it to be white. What would you suggest to maintain all the natural pine knots ect to continue to show through. Do I need to apply a remover for the surface as it appears to have a coating of some kind or can I just sand? I’ve purchased a white stain, Benjamin Moore semi-solid. I cringe at the thought of how much work this will be but know it will be so worth it. I look forward to hearing your recommendations. Thanks from us newbies for your excellent teaching style. ❤️ from 🇨🇦.
To end up with the finish you described, I am sorry but you would have to start with bare wood. Try just sanding to see if the existing finish comes off easily but you may have to strip and then sand. You are right, its a lot of work but well worth it. Good luck. Wes

Alyson...just paint the base primer coat on the inside without glaze. Thanks for watching....good luck with your project. Wes
Never heard of this process but always wondered what that look was ! Great info. Love this look. So posh
Thank you so much!! Wes
Thanks Jessica...it would be a fun fall project. Good luck. Wes
MY GOODNESS THAT'S SO BEAUTIFUL TOO !!! thanks for showing how to do the side cabinets for a kitchen !! I appreciate the tutorial!!
You are so welcome!
Holy moly! As great as this looks it would take me a good 6 months (or more!) to do all my kitchen cabinets myself!
looks great I am going to do my kitchen and all my golden oak doors in basement. Great video
Having rubbed down/back to expose the grain, I find
it much quicker to apply a ‘ liming wax ‘ at that
stage. Leave few hours and the buff up .
Works a treat ! ✔️
OR you could chalk paint at that stage too, then
apply clear wax , leave few hours, then buff of etc
I agree al liming wax or white washing would’ve been easier and less time-consuming.
Orla, are you saying use liming wax instead of wire brushing? More details please! Wes- do you have an opinion on this?
Beautiful - Excellent demonstration ‼️
Thank you for this! That's the style of cabinet doors that are in my kitchen and I really appreciate you showing the process on the door with that arch adding a bit more complication. I love this finish! My brain is buzzing with all the color combination possibilities!
Edit: scoop edge, cathedral arch. Got it. Good to know for reference. Thanks!
You are so welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video. Wes
Would this work with a blue or green stain. Thank you for this. Great lesson. Do you have more.
@@joannefreeman3573 I was wondering the same thing
Same here, I like be my Oak cabinets, they were very expensive & I’m not changing them at all.
@@joannefreeman3573 Yes it would...check out our other videos on cerusing. Thanks for watching. Wes
Great video, step by step explanation
Great video Wes. Have vanity in the garage and 80% done with the prep. Picked up the needed tips for two coats of primer and sand afterwards. Will have it done this weekend and ready to reinstall. Will tackle kitchen and laundry room after wildfire season in the PNW. This will save me $20K for kitchen remodel.
Good stuff! That is awesome!! Send me a picture when you are done. Thanks for sharing. Wes

That is great!! Glad you had some good success. View some of our other cerusing videos for additional color options.
Thank you, Wes
I would like to see this technique using different colors. Like a white base with dark blue glaze. Or maybe yellow paint with black glaze.
Hi James...You could always do a test sample on the back side of a drawer to see what you like. Thanks. Wes

Looks awesome. A bit of work but well worth it. Great video.
Absolutely gorgeous. What kind of total time was involved in doing the set of cabinets?
Hi Doug...total time start to finish, not including drying time, was about 2 hours. Thanks for watching. Wes
@@WoodworkingWithWes that’s great in my mind it was so much longer.
This is amazing work. Thank you for sharing.
Hi...you are so welcome. Thanks for visiting the channel. Wes
This turned out great! Thanks so much for this video. I’m so looking forward to doing this on our Oak cabinets.
You are so welcome...glad it was helpful and you enjoyed it. Good luck with your project. Wes
Thank you, Wes. Wow brand new , good looking cabinets. This video is what i needed. We were going to rip off those golden oak cabinets ( just bought our house a month ago) after saw ur video , i got second thought. Will let u kno how it goes. Thank you
Thank you! I would love to see pictures....good luck. Wes
Wes
I’m with you Glenda, if you’re going to wipe off the primer to show the grain, why 2 coats? 🤷🏻♀️ But he’s the professional 😜

i learned years ago to just tape first and then completed paint with an edger, works great
This looks like what I’ve seen called ‘pickled’. Would that be another process? It’s a brilliant way to light up and energize the appearance without stripping. How wonderful. I hope to find an oak piece I can have fun with like this. It’s a Wow, for sure.
As a decorative artist I’d would call it “pickled”
@@WhirlyPearly
Thanks.
Pickled is a different process
@@gypsyscometotown
Yes, thanks. I figured as much. I’ll research that at some point. I once did a lot of furniture building and refinishing of antiques. I prefer methods now that are as nontoxic as possible. Haven’t been able to tolerate VOC’s for several decades.
@@adrianekelly2966
So doing a pickled finish would be much better for you because you can use all water based products
Just GORGEOUS ❤ thinking of doing this to an old dresser 😁
Go for it and good luck! Wes
Wes
Your project looks amazing. I love it. ❤
I’m doing my research and plan on starting my kitchen cabinets in September.
I have never heard of this technique but very interesting.
Thank you.
Glad you liked the video...thanks for watching. Wes
Very good job, Thanks for sharing your knowledge Wes, God Bless You.
My pleasure...glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching, Wes
I love how it came out. Looks so contemporary!
Thank you for watching the video Nancy...glad you enjoyed watching the process.
Turned out really sharp, nice job.
Phenomenal job Wes. Will definitely consider this for my kitchen.
Thank you for showing how to do this on the cabinets. I was trying to figure out how to do this without using the spray gun. This is how I want to update my 60's cabinets with out replacing the real wood cabinets.
You can do it!! Thanks for watching. Wes
What color was the primer tinted. Great job by the way. This is what my wife finally decided on this color and finish
What color was the primer tinted?
Home is getting repaired and this is perfect for a diy i want to change my cabinets when i go back
Sounds great...glad you enjoyed the video. Wes
Came out beautiful . Looks gorgeous!!!!! Love, love the color.
We're getting close to doing our cupboards. We got everything to do them now but I am nervous as heck but wont know if ya don't dry your an awesome teacher..🇨🇦
You can do it...good luck! It will be great, Wes
The video is very entertaining but it would take me years to do my kitchen...
ruclips.net/video/mW0gnJYuqr0/видео.html
Destiny. I KNOW this isn't for my husband and I. We still have outside house paint 'stored' in the foyer from three YEARS ago. We got about half way...I give up.
Big kitchen the 🤔✔️
If it took you one whole day to do a cabinet, you can do ten cabinets in ten days.
Thanks for the sane way of looking at this chore. ;- )
That came out incredible!!
What would you suggest to maintain all the natural pine knots ect
to continue to show through.
Good luck. Wes
