In today's video we will be reacting to Maddie VS. Mackenzie in the ICONIC 'CRY' SOLO!
You all have been asking me to compare Maddie Ziegler VS. Mackenzie Ziegler for SO long, so I thought a good place to start would be a fair ground for comparison: their matching 'Cry' solos! So in today’s video I will be adjudicating both solos, providing some constructive criticism and feedback for both girls and also giving some words of encouragement for what the girls are doing well at!

I think the reason why Kenzie doesn’t connect with the piece because she knows this is Maddie’s dance, not her’s. She knows everyone expects her to do the dance “perfect” like Maddie did. Kenzie deserved a beautiful piece like this, not done by Maddie. Poor Kenzie is probably tired of being compared to her sister

Mackenzie was under a lot more stress than Maddie was learning this solo. Maddie knew this one from before the show so she probably had weeks to learn it and to get to feel the music. Also, she had the ability to feel the music from before the show. Learning to feel the music when you're under constant stress is impossible in my honest opinion. It always seemed to me that Mackenzie was way more stressed from being on the show than Maddie was, so perhaps she was unable to connect to her emotion because of that. I wish that she would do a lyrical routine now that she's off the show and a little bit older, that would be very interesting to see.
knory123 yes I agree!! I enjoyed watching her Colors of the Wind number on Dwts jr. But have you watched her perform her solo Dream?! I know it’s old now, but I loved watching that one! I totally agree it’s hard to feel the music and be in the piece under pressure!
exactly with Abby intimidating and bullying her to do Maddie faces and be like Maddie like that was the only way to dance this solo it really was a terrible episode :(
yeah, but is not her style favorite, she is good in ballrom and hip hop, but also with stress she did a great job with abby yealling at her alll the time.
@@JordanJSparks Yes she was really good in colours of the wind. I honestly did not expect her to be that good after not doing very technical dancing for a while. But she was amazing all throughout Dwts! I don't believe I have seen that one, I'll look it up, did she do that one on dance moms?
Having weeks to learn a dance is normal!
I feel like kenzie didn’t get the basic technique training the other girls had because of learning new dances and the lack of training once the show started which is when kenzie also started
Absolutely agree!! I think she's a SEASONED VETERAN when it comes to being on camera and being on stage and just show business in general, but I think being that they show started when was like 5, it was basically SINK OR SWIM (pun intended) whether she could keep up technically or not. The other girls got the advantage of actually having time to learn in a studio, without the fast pace or the pressure of everything being public. That being said, I think Mackenzie has a HUGE advantage growing up in front of the camera since she was so young, because it will always feel natural to her, she will never have issues with stage freight and she will probably end up being the most successful one out of the lot!
Maddie learnt over the rainbow (cry) at 7 and performed it on Dance Moms when she was 8.
Mackenzie performed “cry” when she was 9, but she only had a week to learn it.
I actually think the major difference is musicality, honestly. Aside from the emotional performance maturity you mentioned, when Maddie dances she looks so fluid and she really uses her body to express the music and extends the movements all the way through her hands or feet or neck, etc. It felt like Mackenzie was dancing "on top of" the music, if that makes sense. It's like you could see her doing the 8-counts in her head and thinking "okay this step then that step" but Maddie is just able to let go completely and emote.
Yes 100%!!! The combination of emotion and musicality is what makes Maddie stand out even amongst extremely highly trained technical dancers. I agree with what you said about being ON TOP of the music, that's exactly how I felt when I said she was just going through the steps. Musicality is SOOOOO important when it comes to telling a story. That is why you can have INCREDIBLE technique but if your musicality is crap= watching paint dry
I don’t think she connected because she felt like she was being compared and pressured. And Mackenzie said multiple times that she didn’t have passion for dance at this time. I feel bad for her
I think someone mentioned this but I believe Maddie was 7 doing her lyrical (which is part of what made it so stunning- we mostly see sassy jazz like what Everleigh Soutas-Smith does from little kids) and Kenzie was 10 during hers.i think Maddie's was of course much more of an emotional connection, and Kenzie's was maybe a little more controlled with her movements. I don't think forcing Kenzie to do this iconic solo was a good idea at all, unless we got an acro number with pigtails from Maddie on the same episode, lol. I wish the producers wouldn't have pushed this whole comparison because even now Maddie and Kenzie constantly have to tell people to please stop comparing them and that when they insult one sister to compliment the other, that's hurtful to BOTH of them!

Mackenzie was under a lot of stress at this moment. When your teacher, mother believe that you are not good enough to be your self on the stage and you have to act to be another person to be valued and successful. I believe the last thing she thought was to feel the dance. Mackenzie didn't feel this piece she was acting. Not a performance acting, she was acting to be Maddie.
I preferred Maddie. She flowed better, the emotions were better and I think the technique was better and Kenzies timing was off. But it's not really fair because it was choreographed to Maddie's strength more than it was Mackenzie.
Yeah and Maddie knew it from before the show, too, so she probably had a lot more time to learn and perfect it. Plus Mackenzie was probably really stressed about doing it (making it harder to connect to the music) because she knew people would compare it to Maddie and it *is* a Maddie solo. Poor Mackenzie.

I feel like kenzie didn’t use her face because she was so focused on the “maddie face” which really didn’t fit this solo and every time she changed her face she was like oh no the maddie face
yes, that was soo stupid! Stop putting the 'Maddie Face' in her head and just teach the girl how to Emote with passion. It has nothing to do with being like Maddie! I really hope Abby wasn't that simple when the Cameras were not rolling lol .

Can we all admit though kenzie looked as if she was hiding pain behind her smile. From always being compared to her sister she danced and in her dancing she’s hiding the fact that she is hurting. Her technique was better than maddies when Maddie did the cry solo like Jordan said when Maddie did cry she was a little bit wobbly whereas kenzie had more control especially on her turns.
Maddies technique was way better and in terms of how wobbly their turns were kenzies were worse maddie was also younger than kenzie when she did this dance

I noticed Mackenzie did everything to the left while Maddie the right. Maddie was better emotionally but I enjoyed Mackenzies version in a different way.
yes!! which is why I was impressed that Mackenzie did the turning section (to the right) in the Bollywood number in Season 6!
Mackenzie is left handed so she naturally turns left. It's why she's not the best turner in group dances when everyone is turning to the right.

I was happy that Kenzie got a higher score than Maddie.
More to rub it in Abby's face than anything.
And it does seem like their mother favored Maddie. The more attention (as per what they showed the audience) Abby gave to Maddie, the more positive attention their mother seemed to give to Maddie.
It annoyed me how Mellisa was like “Kenzie did a such a good job I didn’t think of Maddie once” THEY SHOULDN’T BE COMPARED THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT HUMANS
right? like especially when it's your OWN daughter. lol. It was like when Mackenzie won with Sink or Swim. I was appaulled that Melissa said Maddie was AMAZING and Mackenzie was a 7 year old...
Yes just like Newt and Theseus Scamander from Fantastic beasts. They were always compared to each other a lot, and well Newt is a magizoologist and Theseus is the auror. Everyone is different and sorry I had to throw in a harry potter reference there, coming from a fan hehe😂 and of course I like dance moms too

Both are amazing !!!! Is true that Maddie is more kinda artist but I'm sooooo Kenzie fan and I love her version and is really sad how Melissa act, she is their mom but have eyes only for Maddie 😢. Great video. Big hugs Jordan #TeamKenzie

I personally prefer Mackenzie's "Cry". Maddie's movements in her version seems to be a little too sharp for me. Kenzie's version is more soft and I like it more. But I only judge as a common viewer, I don't know much about this style of dancing to judge their technique or something else. I agree that Maddie had more emotions and connection to the song though. Kenzie's facials are not as natural as Maddie's and she didn't really had a connection to the song, but I think she did pretty good considering all the pressure she was under while learning it. And I don't really feel any difference between her and Kenzie if we talk about the feeling this dance gave TO ME as a viewer tbh.

Does anyone notice that when Abby reassigns a Maddie solo to a different girl, she takes out the front ariel and makes the girls do a side ariel. she did it to Kendal in "fool me twice," chloe in "You Can/Be anything".

Mackenzie is probably stronger in this for two reasons, One being she does more acro then Maddie, and Two being that she had danced with older girls for years up to this point learning so many things more while at that point Maddie hadn't
and because she is a Tumbler!! Tumbling and Acro takes WAY more stamina and strength than Lyrical dancing lol

Did you notice Abby always accused Mackenzie of having soft ankles? And that she did a side tumble better on one side than the other, but her weaker landing ankle was usually the Side Abby gave her that step in her choreo on?
In my honest opinion, Maddie's was better.She had better emotions and a better feeling for the music.Also, it seemed like this dance was ment for her and she really enjoyed it.
Kenzie was also great, but the fact that this is a dance Maddie has done before really stressed her, since she was always compared to her older sister.
And Mackenzie does lyrical almost never. It would be like if you make Maddie do a cute acro dance.

Por qué todo el mundo trata de defender a Mackenzie y decir que es un solo de Maddie? No hay solos de nadie y un bailarín debe saber hace todo tipo de bailes, Mackenzie no tenia, tiene, ni tendrá lo que Maddie tiene, porqué Maddie es una verdadera artista y Mackenzie solo aprovecha la fama y el talento de su hermana, Maddie es capaz de convertir cualquier cosa en una obra de arte cosa que su hermana nunca conseguirá, eso no quiere decir que Mackenzie sea mala en todo, seguro que es una increíble persona, pero no tratéis de mejorarla, porqué es lo que es.

yes I've watched the full over the rainbow solo and she was only 7!
I think there were 2 problems for Mackenzie... 1) she was told to "be Maddie"... she couldn't pull in her own feelings because she was supposed to be putting on an act. 2) Mackenzie NEVER got emotional dances so she didn't have the same opportunity to develop an emotional range. She always had the cutesy dances and you don't emote with those.

If I recall correctly, Maddie did her Cry solo when she was 8. Mackenzie did this solo when she was 10 or 11. Think of Maddie's technique at 10 or 11. It was a vast improvement. Which is why I thought it odd you kept comparing techniques as if they were competing those solos at the same age.

I feel like there were a lot of things stacked against Mackenzie during this solo such as being as good as Maddie, having less time to learn it and simply wanting to please Abby! You can tell Mackenzie is not a lyrical contemporary dancer and that she finds it harder to make and connect emotion! However Mackenzie was also two years older performing this solo than Maddie wasn’t performing hers and that possibly why Mackenzie was better at certain things but overall you can just tell the dance wasn’t designed for Mackenzie

Well what I see in that episode it was they say that Mackenzie was doing that solo she was a little unhappy because she knows that they are comparing her with Maddie and that's not very nice because is basically saying that Mackenzie has to dance like Maddie or better and its like everybody has her own style

I was gonna say...just as you said it; Kenzie seems to be a much stronger dancer than Maddie at the same age.
She may not emote the way Maddie did, but her movement is more sure in her body. Like she knows what her body could do, and she expected it to behave when she moved it.
If only Kenzie could have extended that to her ankles and feet...

I like both of them but i loced kenzies cause i felt more drawn in because of her choice of facials. Just imo❤
Sorry I'm late to this, Jordan, but do you think that if they hadn't told Mackenzie to do "the Maddie face" she would've perhaps done better emotionally than what she did here? I could tell instantly that all the way through it she was trying to imitate Maddie's face because that's what Abby told her to do.. You could see Melissa trying not to lose it in the dressing room when Abby tried to get her to pull the Maddie face.. I half think it was cruel to put Mackenzie out there when she never does lyrical.. Like you said, practice at the studio for months then perhaps try compete something new but she was literally just thrown out there and told to be like Maddie. I felt sorry for both of them during this as I'm pretty sure Maddie didn't and still wouldn't want Kenzie or any other dancer compared to her. Each dancer has their faults and their strengths and each have something unique about them which makes them their own dancer.. Continuously being compared must've knocked down Kenizes confidence a lot
yes! I think that if they EVER just embraced that kids natural heart, she would have shined, instead of feeeling like the best version of herself was a second rate version of her sister. I think she should have NEVER been told to make the 'Maddie Face', but to just wear her heart on her sleeve when she performs.
@@JordanJSparks I wish I could dance like any of those girls. I've never had good flexibility and I have the tendancy to forget the entire thing in 0.3 seconds whereas you pass me a script and I'll memorise it in under an hour.. I was internally celebrating that our production of Aladdin wouldn't include me dancing... Until I read the script and unfortunately Jasmine is dancing with Aladdin during one part.. I warned my drama teacher about my lack of grace and she just laughed, she won't be laughing soon 🤣

I didn't think Maddie made good facial expressions until she was older,so probably about season 3 or 4. Before that, she always gave that same painful looking smile
Its just the fact that the cry solo was made for Maddie, so right away unfair. But still i liked Makenzie better Sry. Id of liked to have seen Abby make Maddie redo other solos created for other students to really see what Maddie could do. When Maddie began dancing elsewhere, where choreography wasnt made only for her, then we saw her abilities and she relaxed more.

Jordan Sparks i don’t think it was a Dance Moms solo. I think it’s one of her actual solos that got recycled for the show (similar to Maddie’s “Over the Rainbow”/“Cry”).

On another note im so proud of Kenzie!! Like you said, lyrical was not her strongest style but she did her best with what she was given. She had so much pressure on her but she didnt go out there forget it and then run off stage (and this is not meant as shade towards any dancers lol).

I think it's actually the first one, but I always say it wrong.
Maddie does feel the emotions of the songs a lot better overall, but specially in this solo Mackenzie was told all of the time to do the Maddie Face. But Mackenzie isn’t Maddie so she can’t do a Maddie face. The instructions should have been to feel the song not to do the Maddie face
