    This is an excellent starter project because there are only a few pieces, put together with very basic joinery, and yet the end result is a classy and useful serving tray.
    I built a version of this tray over 40 years ago in 7th grade shop class. I decided to revisit this project and make a new version. I first drew it on the computer in Sketchup, and used that to make 1:1 plans that I could easily trace when cutting out the parts.
    It has the classic lines of mid-century modern projects, and given that my own tray has lasted 40 years of use, I think one that you build should last you for a long time as well.

    Great design Art! I'm putting this project on the Make list... Thanks

      Thanks, Jon! I'd like to see it combined with your veneering video. I think I'd get even better results on the look: cut out the shape first, then veneer it == no tear out at all.

    What a great project to make with your kids! My daughter is already bored being stuck at home so this will be fun for us.

    Nice one :)
    I think that the way the handles attach in two places with a fairly small area and the gap between would minimize the effect of seasonal movement for solid wood. Probably wouldn't stay as flat as ply, though.

      @Wordsnwood  4 года назад

      Yeah, now that I think of it, I think I agree. Still, plywood is a good choice for this, I think.

    Nice little project Art.👍 I don't think that bid of chip-out is gonna matter . Also when i drill true plywood and don't want a chance on chip-out i put a piece of scrap mdf under it if possible, works every time !

    Beautiful pieces Art !
    That oil modified poly really brings out the look of the cherry.
    Loved the comment about hand sanding... so many complain about sanding then go bananas with a machine :^)

    • @Wordsnwood

      sheet goods rarely need much in the way of touch up sanding

      Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) precisely... but they still bitch about hardwood. Is zen like hand sanding instead of depending on pigtail makers

    Nice Tray Art, gonna have to make this. Your plans are also very good, I bought the mission style night stand plans and built one and it turned out great. I would show you a pic but don't know how to post one.

    I never took wood shop in school, I was into machine shop and auto. How I wish I had. BTW, next time you apply poly try pushing the foam brush. I know it sounds odd but it works really well I find.

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  4 года назад

      kinda foams up when you do that... at least if you compress the foam. Is that what you mean?

    • @kortt
      @kortt 4 года назад

      @@Wordsnwood No, I kinda lean the brush at a really low angle and push it . IIt always seems to go on with less streaking for me when i do that. I usually do it that way on large surfaces, it seems to keep the wet line straighter as well.

    Nice starter project for the kids! I didn’t catch how you printed the 1:1 plans, what product is this?

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  4 года назад

      Details are in the build article: www.wordsnwood.com/2020/modern-tray/
      In brief, I used the "BigPrint" program from woodgears.ca to make the 1:1 plans after first drawing it in Sketchup.

    The chip out was from the hole you drilled, should have flipped it.. :)

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  4 года назад

      One of the pieces of plywood shifted so the backer board for drilling was out of position.
