  • Convert 556/223 rifles to 6.5 Grendel. Hog Hunting With 6.5 Grendel is much more effective than hunting with a rifle that shoots 223 Remington. I explain how easy it is to upgrade your rifle and have a much better rifle for hunting hogs or deer.
    The 6.5 Grendel can be a good choice for hog hunting, as it is capable of delivering a significant amount of energy and has good accuracy. Hogs are tough animals, so it is important to use a caliber that is capable of penetrating their thick skin and causing a quick and humane kill. The 6.5 Grendel is known for its good terminal performance, which makes it well-suited for hunting hogs. When hunting hogs with the 6.5 Grendel, it is important to use a suitable bullet that is designed for hunting. Soft-point or polymer-tipped bullets are often recommended for hunting hogs, as they tend to expand upon impact and deliver a more humane kill. It is also important to be aware of any hunting regulations in your area, as there may be specific requirements or restrictions on the caliber or type of bullet that can be used for hog hunting.

    Feral hog hunting is about the only method of controlling the spread of wild hogs and their numbers far exceed the number taken by hunters. Trapping hogs does not work well at all as they are usually too smart to be taken with traps.
    Science has shown that hogs take a heavy toll on crops and compete with wildlife like deer for food. At least one study found that hogs can eat as many as 75 percent of the crops and deer populations are declining in some parts of the country, possibly as a result of an increase in feral hog numbers.
    Wild hogs have spread to all the southeasterm USA and are presently the most abundant destructive animal in the US. Hundreds of thousands of sheep, cattle, and goats fall victim to predators each year. In fact, predators cause some of the most significant losses to the sheep industry nationwide. Livestock losses attributed to predators cost U.S. ranchers and producers more than $71 million annually, according to statistics compiled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

    I use a AR with a 20 inch Bear Creek Arsenal fluted 6.5 Grendel upper with a budget Aero Precision 2 stage trigger and a Bushnell 3x9-40 xlt trophy and no muzzle device, just a thread protector using Hornady Black ELD match 123 grain store ammo with a dead hold zero of 200 yards with a sub moa 50 yard zero. Opening week of deer season in middle TN I got 2 deer and 1 coyote. Both deer taken at 175 yards, coyote at 30 yards. First deer was a double lung pass through with no blood trail. Went 40 yards and died. Second deer was a double lung hold that hit low and blew out both upper front legs and the heart. 10 yards and dead. Coyote was a heart shot and dropped dead right there without a flinch. Very accurate and deadly round.

    I have a 6.5 18" side charge upper coupled with a Palmetto lower and I'm very pleased with it. The main purpose of this gear is for hogs. I can see your point of keeping the weight down for hunting that will not wear you off carrying it in the field. I see that you use the steel ammo and that's where I stay away from it since ARs are not too fund of steel so I decided to reload my own with great results. Enjoyed your video and your comments on this reat cartridge for hogs and deer as well.

    Thank you for making this video. I built my Grendel with a Saturn barrel from midway or brownells….can’t remember which. Great shooting rifle. Ive taken a good buck with it.
    I wish more companies made a bolt action for this cartridge using a mini action. A few do..CZ has a mini action but I bought and sold their 18” version because it was terribly inaccurate. Howa and ruger chamber for it too.

      I have combed the internet for 6.5 Grendel content. I haven’t paid a lot of attention to “subject popularity” when searching.
      I think it has proven to be more of a cartridge for the AR platform but….
      The 6.5 Grendel seems pretty ideal for a very light and short (18” barrel) bolt action. A rifle around 5lbs that is easily packable. Something minimalist, packable and very accurate. Fun to think about. I like the Howa offering. When I think about the size of the Howa I guess I think it may as well be a Creedmoor. I think the beauty of the Grendel is the performance it delivers in small package with 27ish grains of powder.
      Thank you for your “5 best Thermal 2022”. It got me on the path to understanding more about thermal. I watched several times.

    Mine is an APF upper on a Aero Precision lower, with a Burris optic - I've taken many deer with my setup here in Georgia, love 6.5 Grendel. (I was using 120 grain Federal Fusion loads, but I think Federal discontinued 6.5 Grendel in that line, I plan on reloading either 123 grain Hornady SST's or something similar, like a Barnes load.)

    In Theory. But where can you buy factory ammo and a factory rifle cambered in it? The best hog rifle I have ever used is a Interarms sporterized Lee Enfield 303 with a 4x scope. It groups a hand size target with PBR to 200yds. That 180gn bullet travelling at 2300fps is all you ever need even out to 300 yds which is the limit for ethical hunting. It will take hogs instantly and right up to Elk. That big bullet is going slow enought to smash a shoulder and expend all its energy inside the animal. They just drop and ammo is $40 a case.

    • @Theolddeerhunters
      @Theolddeerhunters  5 месяцев назад

      You can buy complete rifles and get ammo at Academy sports, bass pro, Scheels. Order it online. It is much easier to find than 303.

    Did you have to change buffers for any of your 6.5 uppers?

    • @Theolddeerhunters
      @Theolddeerhunters  Год назад

      No, they worked fine with the buffer I used in my 223. Changing the buffer may help you tune the felt recoil but I didn't bother. I just installed a Superlative Arm piston system in the Grendel with no need to change buffer. The piston keeps the gun much cleaner when running a suppressor. Thanks for watching.

      @@bigb0r3 if you are running a heavy buffer, it may keep the bolt from coming back far enough to eject the fired case or to completely close and lock the bolt. If the bolt is not locked in it won't fire. Could also be gas issue if you are running light buffer.

      @@Theolddeerhunters I started using the Grendel in 2005, the 6.8 in 2006. Most of the 6.5 bullets were designed for the 6.5x55 and will not expand at the slower Grendel velocity. I've been a smith since 1980, engineer for 24 years after that. The 6.8 is apx 100fps faster using the same length barrel and same weight bullets using factory ammo. Yes the Grendel can shoot flatter but who shoots deer and hogs past 400yds with an intermediate sized cartridge. The 6.8 is better out of 16" barrels and works much better for shooting hogs when you have to lead a running hog. The 6.8 can be handloaded much faster than factory ammo also. 110gr bullets to 2700, 120s to 2600 out of 16" barrels. Watch Lone Star Boars.
