Glad to see that the fish coming home to my aquarium are collected by experts with the least stress possible.

Too bad he’s not an expert on corals,
if I’m not wrong I’m pretty sure he’s doing the same thing with most other reef drivers, by grabbing, pressing his hand on the coral, even ‘smashing’ his bucket on the coral and using a tool.
The young coral and sponges look pretty alive amongst the dead ones, and did the government allowed the use of tools? At least is much better then cyanide fishing, and maybe the damage is just so slightly(I am not an expert either so I might be wrong)

very cool to see this way of capturing aquarium fish! This is by far so much better for the reef than the cyanide some people use.

This is a highly permitted activity requiring permission from 4 separate government agencies with sustainable management paramount in the issue of these permits.

As much as I do not like the idea of taking specimens from the wild for the aquarium trade, I do appreciate the technique used. At least, it's not destructive to the ecosystem.

The percentage of marine fish that are actually able to be captive bred is minimal and the carbon footprint for such endeavours are incredibly high compared with that of a sustainably hand collected fish - captive raised the option for people who have not invested time to fully understand the issue but want to look after the environment. Nowadays fisheries in Australia has moved from the quest for sustainability, that is assumed through management, now we focus on protecting reef resilience and protecting the ability of the reef to bounce back from natural disasters and significant impacts.

What about damage to the reef itself? You're poking about amongst the coral, leaning on it, banging around. Not good.

  • @afyounie

So to everyone that comments negatively on this, do you not understand how sustainable fishing works? There is a limit to how many he can take. Also, there is a size limit. I imagine that those of you that are against this are also against fisherman harvesting many of the seafoods you eat as well. This guy has gone through a lot of licensing and the fees that come with it to be able to catch these fish. You should applaud him for going about this the right way. There are plenty of those that harvest fish and corals illegally and would continue to do so even if all legal collection was stopped. I am all for captive bred fish but as has been said, there are a plethora of species that are near impossible to breed with the current technology. Also, captive bred tends to be more expensive due to the cost of raising the fry and the amount of losses incurred. Next time before you talk negatively about someone, do some research and get some better insight in the subject of discussion. As for the person that said they lost every dwarf angel they bought, I imagine it is because you could not meet the dietary needs of the fish and did not enact a proper quarantine procedure.

I'm sure he does the right way, but in my experience as a recreative diver, they always told not to touch or bang any coral, but well if you compare it with other methods that fish boats use is very respectful with the environment. I guess we're not use to see from where our pretty fishes for our exotic fish tank comes from.

For all these hypocrites making stupid comments I suggest you get a life or go hug a tree while eating your tuna sandwich which is also a fish ripped out from its natural habitat in unsustainable numbers.Think before you talk and make comments that the video poster is harming the sea what about all the harm your very existence does to the earth?
Don't get touchy, sustainable collection is what needs to be implemented as with everything in life that's why we are all looking for sustainable energy sources, that's thinking green...whining like little girls about things you don't understand properly doesn't make the would a better place.

Too many people have to put in their 2c worth. Everyone has something to say about taking fish from the reef because they are pretty. Its funny how these people don't have anything to say about table fish such as tuna which are caught in the 10 of millions using far more environmentally distractive methods. People need to get their facts RIGHT before expressing their opinions. P.S. Great Vid!

I think you are doing the most humane method possible but it still is painful to watch and brings out the hypocrite in me. Thank you for posting and taking the care that you do in your work. The fish trade supports many thousands of people and who are we to say how another man in another country earns his living. Good luck.

I personally feel uneasy about the idea of owning a wild-caught fish. Unless it can be bred in captivity, and has over many generations it's off my list. Even if this is sustainable, like certain food fish practices. If it won't breed in a captive situation it shouldn't be kept by private collectors. Just my personal opinion.

Literally "hand collecting!" Why not carry a small hand net to scoop up the fish once cornered in the big net, rather than grab them with your hand, which requires a certain amount of pressure so the fish does not slip out, specially when you grabbed four specimens at one time. Most of the specimens were indelicately, even forcefully, pulled from the net, further increasing probability of injury. It is the conventional wisdom among hobbyists and pros to touch the fish as little as possible to reduce probability of injury. I would definitely not buy fish which I knew were caught in this manner, not for any moral reasons, simply because it would increase the chances of DOAs in my shipment.

there's other ways to get marine species other than taking them from their environment. Removing any species from a reef is extremely detrimental to the species and the ecosystem around it. If you want a species that badly just contact your local exotic fish breeder and see if they have what you are after. Only keep tank bred marine creature!!!! taking them from reef is extremely selfish, irritating and close minded.
