Working at a wholesaler I've seen and worked with everything here except the peppermint. They really are flown in first class. Generally they are purchased before they even arrive at the facility, in some cases they are collected specifically for a client.
Candy Basslets aren't as reclusive as you suggest. When 1st added to a tank, they will find a cave to dwell in and usually can be spotted hanging out there (although usually very hard to spot). After several months, they are usually easily spotted and will swim from in and around your nooks and crannies. Then during feeding time can even be seen in "open" water.
I seen some of these fish in Petco in the states. Yes I have a saltwater fish aquarium. I started back up again. Been while like 2016. I see now salt water tank s are getting easier. They can be cheap but not . I start off simple and easy just let it grow.i have 55 gallon. I'm thinking starting up 60 or 75 .
These fish are all really beutiful but one reason why i never got into salt water tanks is due to most fish being taken from the wild instead of captive bred. I still know that some species are captive bred but not a lot from my experience.
McCulloch clownfish from Lord Howe Island Australia were sold to the US for $5000 USD each. They live in protected waters also but are tank bred available in the US pretty cheap now I believe. I managed to get a couple wild caught ones and to my knowledge are the only ones in Australia 🤔
I listen to your videos when I drive to work in the morning (so I can dream of having a ginormous saltwater tank in my classroom or house) and every time you curse and you cover it up with a car horn my heart jumps out of my chest😂 even though I live in the middle of nowhere and no one honks their horns here😂
My wife made me sleep on the couch when I bought a regal angel and a interstellar bounce mushroom for a total of 550 dollars without her knowing. I can't imagine what would happen to me if I bought even one of these fish.
@@bummbrotha1065... it's been discovered that they eat sponges in the wild. Consequently, if you feed them specialist sponge based food in the aquarium, they'll stand a chance of lasting for some time. Trouble is, they grow big if they do last a long time, and the sponge food gets really expensive when they pile on body mass.
I just visited my local fish store and they had a Deepwater angel fish not sure of the name but it wasn't the Peppermint one though it was $30,000 dollars. So yea there are definitely fish out there that cost more than my car!
I know they are large angels and not for reefs. But you must touch on the Annularis Angelfish. Imo they are the most beautiful fish, when kept in a fish only tank with plenty of white light
@scoot manke you only ever see the expensive corals in the LFS, fish a relatively cheap in comparison. That is the point I'm making. But thanks for the abuse - hope this makes you feel better.
This was where I found the hybrid Kingi going for £15K last year ... which now ranks as the most expensive fish I've ever been up close and personal with :)
Awesome - I would say you covered all the fish - there are a few below $1000 that are crazy expensive and difficult (femininus and some special fairy wrasse, ventralis anthias, yellow hawkfish and the peppermint hogfish - all of those fish I'd be happy owning if they were under $200 but really all the ones you have on your list are better. I would say that the Candy Basslet is a great fish and I am planning on getting the swales. Also I have seen captive bred multibars (I want to get a pair) and these are deeper water angels so should be reefsafe. The masked angelfish are also totally reefsafe as are all the geinacantus - all of those are great alternatives - I like the spotbreast ;) What you should do is a popular Hawaiian fish list and alternatives
About 6 months ago, I encountered a hybrid angel at a shop near me that had a whopping £15,000 price tag. Probably the most expensive fish I've ever seen up close and personal, so to speak. For the same money, a local car dealer was offering a second hand Mercedes convertible. :) Pretty much puts this into perspective!
As an American I was shocked and saddened to learn that we had lost Hawaii as a state on a Brit fish channel. Well, Bugger off! I say! We didn't need the blighters!
i know this is off topic but i can’t seem to find a good balance for my reef breeder lights. i was wondering if you could share your light settings and mounting height so i could get a better idea to be at! for context: i’m looking to mainly keep LPS and some SPS if that helps at all. thank you!
Varies massively with fish and because these are rare there's not much information. Clownfish can live for 20+ years whereas others like some blennies only 3-4. Not that helpful an answer but it's the best I can do!
Me, used to freshwater fish, seeing the prices of the cheaper alternatives: [gags] "Wow, that's pretty expensive!" Seeing that of the expensive ones: [faints].
There's too many to list here but Abyss Aquatics in the north, Reefkeeper Rugby in the midlands and The Ocean Project in the south is where I'd start. Ask on a Facebook group or forum for more.

It's amazing how deep the pockets are of some people in this hobby. Also, just a little nit-pick, but I'm sure you're aware Hawaii is a state, and not a country. haha
That nearly happened to me a couple of days ago, took the cover off to wash the weir combs and when I came back from the kitchen my Harlequin Tusk was flapping on the floor! Thankfully he’s just fine.
Hawaii isn't a country, it is the 50th state in the United States of America. The Mailed/Reticulated butterflyfish is a close match for a wrought-iron butterfly. As is the white-faced butterflyfish.
I don’t get the appeal of candy basslets. They look cool but not cool enough to be $1000. An lfs had one near me I think it was closer to $2000 but I don’t get why they are so crazy. Plenty of nice fish that look similar for less than a 10th of the price.
Holy shit, 30K for a fish LOL. That's crazy haha. Don't have that ind of money but I'm going to the LFS tomorrow to (hopefully) get me some nice fish and some corals. Can't wait!
I like all these fish but I don’t find them that interesting to keep. I’m more of a predator fish type of guy and I really just don’t like the “center piece” fish. I like cichlids or bass because first Their not expensive (some times) and secondly you can just catch them and grow them out they’ll probably be more interesting than some 10, 000 dollar limited edition blue tang. I would rather pay 500 dollars for a pond or huge tank than for just one fish.
"$1000 fish is 6 months of your mortgage payments" what. shit bro how long ago did you buy your house cuz my 1200 sq 1.5 story house in Ontario is almost $2000 a month!

I have never heard of the descriptive term "divorce-inducing" in my life. Absolutely brilliant.
I bet you could do a similar list of corals in the hobby! Thanks for the entertaining video. I love your commentary!
That would be awesome
Really funny and informative video Alex! Interesting how often your cheaper alternatives are actually prettier than the expensive version 👍🏻
Picked up my Longnose Hawkfish after seeing in one of your videos. Love that fish. So much fun to watch.

Some of them are, including the masked angel. It's just difficult to work out so takes a lot of time and expertise so doesn't happen for many fish.
