I'm a beginner and learned 46 & 2 because of this video lesson in about 3-4 hours. I definitely need to keep practicing to make it a lot smoother, but it sounds decent or at least my wife and kids didn't laugh hysterically at me like some other tunes I've worked on. Thanks for the lesson!
this was an amazing lesson. i love how you breakdown the little intricacies for extra flavor. you are quick where you need to be, and slower at the perfect time. awesome tutorial, subbed.
i love how you don't say play this a certain way or its wrong, but instead you say to play it how you feel you play it best.. that's awesome man. Great tutorial by the way
I brought that up because I've received so many comments telling me something is "wrong" because of the position or I didn't slur something and that's just silly. Play it however you can express yourself and the song best not be a copycat player.
Hey man. Just wanted to thank you for the Tool guitar lessons. I just picked up guitar after about an 18 year hiatus and I was always better at learning seeing someone play. Now my buddies are long gone but at least RUclips can give someone like me a little face to face time thanks to you. You are a natural player and teacher. Keep up the awesome work bro! Thanks again.
There’s something terribly satisfying, even cathartic, that comes as a result of seeing/hearing the soundtrack of my youth dissected in a scholastic manner. Truly, thank you from a longtime, die-hard Tool fan and bass player. Keep up the amazing content. +1 sub. Good on ya, dude.
Sir, I've played classical for many years and have only recently attempted to use a pick. Your breakdowns and explanations are wonderfully elegant. Thank you for some excellent lessons!
Thanx man. This is the third Tool song I'm learning from you and and so far your advice and teaching is right on! Tool's songs are relatively simple but playing them properly with the right rhythm and precision is the hard part.
You're amazing, bro. Not only do you give a tutorial on how to execute songs by one of the most unique bands at all time, said songs are known pantydropping machines. Axe, you are the wingman gotham deserves!
Well, I use 10's most of the time but right now I have 11's on there. I find it helps really thicken things up as well as help sustain. I would use at least 10's to help out the balance. 9's are a little flimsy when any detuning takes place.
It's a Fretwrap by Gruv Gear. There are a lot of different options you can go with. I like theirs because it's multifunctional....as for the play through, check the response below. Thanks!
awesome, I'll keep an eye out :) Thanks a lot for the really helpful lessons. Few youtubers seem to get this close to the attitude and philosophy of Tool - like you said, doesn't matter where you play the notes, what matters is the music itself.
No. I have one quick video of a solo from my last project (check uploads Prog Solo) and some play through demonstrations (including this song) on my website, the link is in the description. Hopefully I'll be uploading some live performances very soon!
I got to say, your tutorials always have a very nice way of saying "you don't have to do it like me - but basically, this is the stuff: " a very pleasant way of being taught a song like this :)
I have literally only left 2 or 3 comments in my life on YT. I also have only subbed one or 2 people. Your lesson was amazing, your playing and tone was amazing. And I thank you, that was great.
thanks Axe for all your Tool lesson videos. Started playing guitar a few months ago (last time I played as a kid) and your lessons really kept me motivated. this was the first song by tool that i learned (not perfectly of course). Videos really help because of timing and technique. And it is very hard to find good tabs for tool and you tabs are the best I have seen. (btw. on some tabs like 46 and two and Pot - there are places where you forgot to add number of repeats on some lines). keep up the good work and thanks for all your effort, youre a great teacher and I really enjoy watching you perform. Greetings from Croatia.
i just started watching these videos, this weekend. I find it very interesting, to break down a song to it bits and pieces. I don't play guitar(i sing while i drive truck) but still i love it. thanks sir.
I don't think it was any one person specifically that made me get them. I saw all sorts of players using them (different kinds) live and/or for recording purposes. I stumbled across Gruvgear, they're SoCal based so I went with them.
Wow, been playing for 34 years and I have to say you're a great teacher as well as a great player! Thanks for Tool stuff! I was playing most of it right, mostly... Lol.
Mute the lower strings with your right hand, in a sense palm muting the string you aren't playing. The left hand also does some light muting by nudging up on the string that aren't being played (the right hand shouldn't be in position to mute the treble strings)
I've said it before but I'll say it again - You are one of a kind youtuber and I love that a lot!!! Not much youtube partners contact with viewers that much.
Thanks for the lesson dude! Helped me re learn this track after years and years! I’ve uploaded my guitar cover! I kinda play it my own way but you really helped with the cross rhythm section!
Yea pitch is everything he said. But he is not playing right according to pitch. The open notes are D and he is playing A for the open notes. So yea there's that
If I had a dollar for every time I did something stupid listening to this song when I was younger I could afford to pay Tool to do a concert in my living room!
The notes aka the pitches are identical so play it where ever you think it sounds best on your guitar. If you watched the lesson I switch up to 12th position for the 2nd verse. I prefer to start in 5th position. At least I have the tuning right...lol
axeofcreation I am amazed that i actually pulled off learning to play guitar without any real life lessons. Your videos were a great help, although, occasionally not quite "noob-friendly". After a little research for the terminology, all troubles of understanding were gone. Thank you axe-sensei ✌(◕‿-)✌
RUclips redid it's subscriber feature. Check your 'subscriber manager' and make sure you have the correct Notice box checked for this channel (and any other fav channel of yours).
WOOHOO! Finally my all time fav Tool song! Thanks Axe! BTW I have a question for you regarding your guitar. You have a strap around your nut. Can you explaining the reasoning behind this and how it helps shape your sound or whatever other function you have it there for? Thanks for the Tool lessons dude! Keep em up cuz they got a new album coming soon!!!!!!
Its amazing how tool can take one riff and play it a hundred different ways and make such a good song
Ikr?
Never heard of this band.. I'll have to check them out.
Yeah. I guess they're...ok. Nothing to write home about, that's for sure.
Juan Grande Franco Tool is badass!
troll much? never seen you here before beautiful....
hehehe
You're an idiot. I suppose you think Lil' Wayne is something to write home about? Kanye West? You are dumb as hell.

Syk Omatic Awesome!
Syk Omatic nothing better than learning a new tool song 😋
you are my inspiration
5 years later I bet Josh is a fire breathing, Tool playing monster on the guitar!
Beginner and learned this song in about 3-4 hours!!??? Damn!
Thanks! You don't have to play it like Jones. However you can express the music is the most important. As long as the notes are the correct pitch!
My steering wheel HATES the outro to this song lol
Michael Metz Not so hard! You'll deploy the airba- see!?!
lol!
Very nice
I’ve been stopped for listening to aggressively before
@DipSet2cR thank you. I appreciate that. glad you like my lessons
this is my favorite guitar channel and its my go-to channel for all things Drop D
Best tool lessons ever love ur instructions
this was an amazing lesson. i love how you breakdown the little intricacies for extra flavor. you are quick where you need to be, and slower at the perfect time. awesome tutorial, subbed.
Agreed. Thx!!

+1 sub.
Good on ya, dude.
It's a fretwrap. It diminishes excess string noise. It's great for recording and live.
Sir, I've played classical for many years and have only recently attempted to use a pick. Your breakdowns and explanations are wonderfully elegant. Thank you for some excellent lessons!
Honestly man.... This series of lessons has totally diverted my musical journey.
Thanks.
Yay, another Tool guitar lesson!
You are the only one that can teach Tool correctly.
Thanks!
Great lesson. Still. One of the most fun to play from Tool, very active.
Thanx man. This is the third Tool song I'm learning from you and and so far your advice and teaching is right on! Tool's songs are relatively simple but playing them properly with the right rhythm and precision is the hard part.
I've been playing for 5 years and always come back to this video to remind me how important tone is , thanks man
You're videos are great
Great delivery of a tutorial
Finally these are back! and with reassurance that all Tool songs will be done!
You're amazing, bro. Not only do you give a tutorial on how to execute songs by one of the most unique bands at all time, said songs are known pantydropping machines. Axe, you are the wingman gotham deserves!
Thanks so much for the lessons. These are by far some of the best on RUclips.
Classic! ThanQ brotha🤘
You are the best at giving lessons on tool songs, this video may be one of the older ones, but adam jones plays it quite differently.
Well, I use 10's most of the time but right now I have 11's on there. I find it helps really thicken things up as well as help sustain. I would use at least 10's to help out the balance. 9's are a little flimsy when any detuning takes place.
Favorite song by Justin, Danny, Adam, and Maynard. TY so much for doing this Greg!
It's a Fretwrap by Gruv Gear. There are a lot of different options you can go with. I like theirs because it's multifunctional....as for the play through, check the response below. Thanks!
Great lesson! I like the "offset" stabs second time around too. I think of it as beat displacement.
awesome, I'll keep an eye out :) Thanks a lot for the really helpful lessons. Few youtubers seem to get this close to the attitude and philosophy of Tool - like you said, doesn't matter where you play the notes, what matters is the music itself.
Yes. In person or via the web. Info is on my site. Thanks
I found your channel only recently and am now subscribed. Thank you for doing what you do! The tutorials are incredible!
No. I have one quick video of a solo from my last project (check uploads Prog Solo) and some play through demonstrations (including this song) on my website, the link is in the description. Hopefully I'll be uploading some live performances very soon!
great lesson man! super detailed, easily understood, I like how you call out strings and fret location -- thank you so much.
I got to say, your tutorials always have a very nice way of saying
"you don't have to do it like me - but basically, this is the stuff: "
a very pleasant way of being taught a song like this :)
Sir! you are one of a kind youtuber. Really wish there were more people like you :). Keep the awesome Tool lessons coming.
I have literally only left 2 or 3 comments in my life on YT. I also have only subbed one or 2 people. Your lesson was amazing, your playing and tone was amazing. And I thank you, that was great.
thanks Axe for all your Tool lesson videos.

Greetings from Croatia.
It’s 2024 I bought an Adam Jones Standard Les Paul watching your video!
This one's gonna be tough to learn but I'll take a stab at it. Once again, for Tool lessons, YOU are the man!!
i just started watching these videos, this weekend. I find it very interesting, to break down a song to it bits and pieces. I don't play guitar(i sing while i drive truck) but still i love it. thanks sir.
Thank you ! You're videos are pushing me to practice guitar more and more. You're awesome :)
I don't think it was any one person specifically that made me get them. I saw all sorts of players using them (different kinds) live and/or for recording purposes. I stumbled across Gruvgear, they're SoCal based so I went with them.
At last ! I've been waiting for this one for so long ! Thanks !
Hey man, great job. Best instruction I've come across so far. This one saved me so much time to get this song down.
Right on! Best of luck!
I'm a half ass acoustic player...and I learn so much from ur vids! your an excellent teacher. If possible give us a few APC lessons,
Wow, been playing for 34 years and I have to say you're a great teacher as well as a great player! Thanks for Tool stuff! I was playing most of it right, mostly... Lol.
Thank you!
Your playing is very smooth, and you have the tone nailed... this coming from a drummer, great lesson!
Thanks for your hard work and posts. I appreciate them.
Dude, absolutely top notch content as always. Your lessons are outstanding. Thank you.
I'm so excited you did this one! Thanks!
Mute the lower strings with your right hand, in a sense palm muting the string you aren't playing. The left hand also does some light muting by nudging up on the string that aren't being played (the right hand shouldn't be in position to mute the treble strings)
Killer tone. Thanks for the lesson. Adam Jones probably has the best guitar tone I've heard.
Thanks for this video and all the resources on your site. Best video guitar lessons I've found.
Thanks man!
Oh men, I love your Videos so much! Thank you for all the Tool Videos. Thank you so much!
I've said it before but I'll say it again - You are one of a kind youtuber and I love that a lot!!!
Not much youtube partners contact with viewers that much.
Adding the song at the end creates copyright issues that I don't want to deal with. I'll most likely add play through videos on my site.
great tutorial. deff coming back to learn more songs
Thanks for the lesson dude! Helped me re learn this track after years and years! I’ve uploaded my guitar cover! I kinda play it my own way but you really helped with the cross rhythm section!
"I don't even know where he actually plays these notes. And in all honest, I don't even care." XD
I don't think is the same. The sound on the 6th string riff will sound more fat (and the fret are smaller, and easier to play)
Yea pitch is everything he said. But he is not playing right according to pitch. The open notes are D and he is playing A for the open notes. So yea there's that
Thank you for your Amazingly awesome lessons and your hard work.
Bravo! Another fantastic lesson! Thanks so much!
thanks man, that was great. Had a lot of fun learning this song
sweet! Gracias
I have 4 electric (3 used heavily), a couple of acoustics but sadly no basses! I'll get one eventually...maybe add some Tool bass lessons.
@metalvocalistwanted I couldn't play a gig without it. it's a staple in my live rig
youre doing gods work bud thank you
gr8 video, easy to listen to and follow along.
you know your stuff!
I like to alter the main riff a lot by playing 17 \16 and 13\12 as the last four notes. Love the phrygian sound of that.
@dominions copyright issues. I don't need any. I will be creating a page on my site very soon that will feature play throughs.
Actually I hit "like" before starting the video. :) And I wasn't disappointed, man! Great lesson - as always! ^^
If I had a dollar for every time I did something stupid listening to this song when I was younger I could afford to pay Tool to do a concert in my living room!

i am completely new to guitars, but my goal is to learn this song!
Well best of luck to you!
axeofcreation
i think i did it :) and a few other tool songs as well
Schwaehn excellent!
axeofcreation
I am amazed that i actually pulled off learning to play guitar without any real life lessons. Your videos were a great help, although, occasionally not quite "noob-friendly". After a little research for the terminology, all troubles of understanding were gone. Thank you axe-sensei ✌(◕‿-)✌

Awesome !! Thank you .
